Bitter? Calif. Researchers Now Want Sugar Controlled Like Alcohol and Tobacco

Bitter: Calif. Researchers Now Want Sugar Controlled Like Alcohol and Tobacco

Dr. Robert Lustig (photo courtesy: UCSF)

Should sugar be controlled like alcohol and tobacco? That’s what a group of researchers from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) seem to think.

Drs. Robert Lustig, Laura Schmidt, and Claire Brindis argue that sugar’s potential for “abuse,” coupled with its “toxicity and pervasiveness in the Western diet,” make it a primary culprit in a worldwide health crisis, according to the UCSF website.

“We are in the midst of the biggest public health crisis in the history of the world,” Dr. Lustig said. “And nobody even gets it. Nobody understands how important this is because they don’t consider it ‘public health.‘ They consider it ’personal responsibility.’”

They argue that the health hazards associated with sugar consumption are similar to those of alcohol — which they note is made from distilling sugar.

And although some researchers have already pointed out that worldwide consumption of sugar has tripled during the past 50 years, therefore possibly leading to an “obesity epidemic,” Drs. Lustig, Schmidt, and Brindis believe that obesity is just one possible symptom of sugar’s toxicity, which goes further than simply being high in calories.

Watch Drs. Lustig, Schmidt, and Brindis discuss their research via UCSFPublicAffairs:

“As long as the public thinks that sugar is just ‘empty calories,’ we have no chance in solving this,” Dr. Lustig said, according to the The Daily Mail.

“There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids and bad amino acids, good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates,” he added, “But sugar is toxic beyond its calories.”

They argue that sugar contributes to 35 million deaths each year from illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Therefore, they argue, curbing the consumption of sugar could potentially save millions of dollars each year.

“There is an enormous gap between what we know from science and what we practice in reality,” Dr. Schmidt said, “In order to move the health needle, this issue needs to be recognized as a fundamental concern at the global level.”

Dr. Claire Brindis (photo courtesy: UCSF)

Dr. Brindis said that the public needs to be better informed about the dangers of sugar with a “wide approach” similar to that seen with tobacco and alcohol, the Daily Mail reports.

What kind of “wide approach”?

They suggest levying special sales taxes, controlling access, and “tightening licensing requirements” on vending machines and snack bars that sell high sugar products in schools and workplaces.

Furthermore, among Dr. Lustig’s more “radical proposals,” to quote Christopher Wanjek of LiveScience, is banning the sale of sugary drinks to consumers under age 17.

“We’re not talking prohibition. We‘re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives,” Dr. Schmidt said.

“We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people‘s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get,” she said.

In a UCSFPublicAffairs YouTube video, Dr. Lustig flirts with the idea of taxing the desire out of consumers and compares it to the government’s approach to cigarettes.

“No one’s really talking about how much tax will it take to reduce consumption,” Ludstig said, “We saw this with cigarettes. We basically had to raise the price of a pack up to $11 in New York City to get people to actually stop smoking. And they finally decided: ‘You know what? The craving just isn’t worth it.”

“So the question is how much taxation would you have to do to a can of soda to get somebody to say ‘You know? I really don’t need to do that’?” Lustig asked.

Dr. Lustig argues that although no one is prepared for a cigarette-style tax increase on soda today, we may see that type of action taken tomorrow.

“There have been a lot of other public health campaigns, which initially seemed to be very radical, but today they seem extremely mainstream,” Dr. Brindis said.

How long are we going to put up with the ever increasing of government in our lives with its costs in both money and loss of freedom before we revolt?

We need to essentially wipe the slate clean and close down huge portions of the government. It is as simple of that. We could easily do without at least half the cabinet level departments and their czars and bureaucrats.

Officials have not determined the salt limits. In a complicated undertaking, the FDA would analyze the salt in spaghetti sauces, breads and thousands of other products that make up the $600 billion food and beverage market, sources said. Working with food manufacturers, the government would set limits for salt in these categories, designed to gradually ratchet down sodium consumption. The changes would be calibrated so that consumers barely notice the modification.

State Mandates Food Cops in Every Restaurant

Starting Feb. 1, every restaurant in Mass. will be forced to employ at least one “certified food protection manager.” Among the many duties to be assumed by the state-mandated food cops will be teaching…..

“Restaurants are also encouraged to make simpler dishes by avoiding ingredients that hide allergens, like some mollusks and shellfish, barley and rye,” reports Boston’s WCVB-TV. “Currently, federal law does not require ‘minor’ allergens to be clearly listed on food labels.”

Got that? Thanks to the new law, chefs will be “encouraged” to alter their signature recipes that they’ve crafted for the vast majority of patrons who do not have food allergies.

Simply posting warnings on menus about potential food allergens contained in dishes would make too much sense and force those with food allergies to actually pay attention to what they choose to consume. This way, they can not be held responsible for getting sick — it’s the restaurants and chefs who will be blamed and sued for poisoning them. Talk about a ‘Happy Meal’ for trial lawyers!

Nanny State Looks to Ban Salt in NY

New York State Assemblyman Felix Ortiz introduced a bill on Friday that would prohibit the use of salt in making foods at restaurants. Says the bill:

“No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises.”

He’s also following the cues of famous Nanny Stater Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who in January compared salt to asbestos:

“If we know there’s asbestos in a school room what do you expect us to do?” Bloomberg shot back at reporters questioning his new initiative. “Say it’s not our business? I don’t think so. The same thing is true with food and smoking and a lot of things.

“Salt and asbestos, clearly both are bad for you,” Bloomberg continued. “Modern medicine thinks you shouldn’t be smoking if you want to live longer. Modern medicine thinks you shouldn’t be eating salt, or sodium.”

Nanny State bans ice cream socials

PEABODY, Mass. (myfoxboston) – Students will have to find a new way to raise money, because a popular ice cream social fundraiser has been canceled at Peabody High School. Students say the fundraiser brought in about $500 a month.

This will be the Second Sugar Act
The first took place in 1764 when the British Parliament placed The American Revenue Act placed a three cent tax on sugar, and increased taxes on indigo wine and coffee. It also imposed a tax on molasses.

When are these liberals, socialists and communists going to get through their heads that we want the government off our backs. They keep making this or that food or whatever something they want to control. There is only one reason, and one reason alone, why they want to do this. THEY WANT MORE & MORE REASONS TO CONTROLL US. Wake up people, these unelected, self appointed “ELITES”, want complete controll.

It’s a NUTRIENT for goodness sake. What’s next fat (too many obese kids)? Water (fighting dehydration)? Protein? Carbohydrates (which are just complex sugars)? Maybe you should try cutting corn subsidies. Honestly, if we’re using it for high-fructose corn syrup (hey look sugar) and want to run our cars on it, we’re clearly overproducing. As someone who can’t consume HFCS (trust me it’s not fun) it’s getting very hard to avoid it. Seriously, why do hamburger buns need that stuff?

Here’s proof that the left is filled with nothing but blind self righteous moral busybodies.

      http://nannystateliberationfront.net/

City’s Sin Tax Forces Pepsi to Shut Plant and Fire Workers

Nanny state bureaucrats in Baltimore, Md., are responsible for adding another 75 of the struggling city’s workers to the unemployment ranks, courtesy of their war against obesity. Pepsi-Cola announced it will no longer produce soda in ‘Charm City’ as a result of the recently passed two cent per container soda tax.

“In the case of Baltimore, as you may know, there was a beverage tax that was passed here and in this case, it did not help in the decision in terms of keeping the Baltimore plant open,” said Pepsi spokesperson Mark Dollins.

Baltimore grocers also report that the soda tax has had an adverse affect on their bottom lines as shoppers are traveling outside of city limits to purchase sugar-sweetened beverages.

“I’m just shocked that [Pepsi's] pulling out and I asked them if there was anything we could do at the city level with Baltimore Development Corporation and try to offer some kind of incentive and they said it was too far down the line,” said City Council President Jack Young.

      OZCHAMBERS,
The same here in Alabama. The ABC sets the price per bottle then tacks on a 56% state tax. When sold through their stores the regular sales tax is added to the total. There are a few privately owned liquor stores, but they like bars and restaurants have to purchase exclusively through the ABC and there are no bulk discounts. One of the results of the Democrats running everything in this state from post Reconstruction after the Civil War until only recently.
