Bizarre Chinese Military Drill Shows Soldiers Bobbling a Grenade

Chinese soldiers of The People’s Liberation Army have been known for some odd training, but this seems to be a little strange even by their unusual standards.
China’s CCTV broadcast this clip, which was making the rounds on the web this morning. It shows six PLA soldiers standing in a circle around a dirt blast hole, passing live explosives hand to hand before a simultaneous dive to the ground that looks more Broadway than battlefield.
Some have suggested it was just a smoking dud passed around with a live charge already embedded in the hole.
In any event, it’s bit weird, and definitely worth watching (via Business Insider):

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 3:37pmUh….even if you pass the live grenade around in battle, at best you give to a guy farthest away from everyone else, who just runs away from the battle, and he’s probably screwed. Unless he can find someone who can disarm it (I have no idea how you’d do that once a grenade is armed) before he gets killed…this doesn’t strike me as a particularly effective military strategy.
I like the American strategy–catch the grenade and lob it back!
