A San Diego family is dazed and confused (and displaced) after a bizarre ordeal involving mistaken identity, arrests, medical marijuana, a skateboard, and a burned-down kitchen.
10News attempts to explain the debacle:
The ordeal began around 9 p.m. when San Diego Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a medical marijuana delivery provider robbed at gunpoint near the 3000 block of Nereis Drive. Sheriff’s officials said a witness reported seeing an armed man running into a house.
Willie Houston, who lives in the home, said his family was making dinner when they realized deputies surrounded the house.
“So I go outside to the door and they tell me to stick my hand through the bar and come on out and follow the voice and the light, and as soon as I get out they handcuff me,” said Houston.
Around the same time, Houston’s son-in-law came home and was also put in handcuffs, but ultimately let go. The family said they were ordered out of the house at gunpoint.
Houston’s wife, Christine, added, “I said, ‘Wait a minute, there’s food on the stove, my grandbaby is upstairs, Cherie is upstairs,’ and then all of sudden all hell breaks loose; all the smoke started coming out of the house.”
The fire broke out in the kitchen, and two women and a 7-year-old girl were trapped on the second floor of the home, according to authorities.
One deputy used a skateboard and another used a fire ax in an attempt to break the windows to get the people out. Deputies had everyone out by the time the fire crews arrived.
The Houstons say they are grateful no one was hurt but say add that the situation could have been handled better.
“[I] think it could be handled better than what it was, especially when we [were] informing them there was no reason for our kitchen to catch on fire; we could’ve lost everything last night,” said Willie Houston.
The Houstons also said the sheriff’s department apologized and promised to compensate them for any damages incurred, but the department’s spokeswoman Jan Caldwell denied the claim.
“This is certainly going to be part of all the investigation that’s going to go on post-incident; what happened, when it happened, reviewing all the reports that have been taken in combination with the fire department and the bomb-arson report,” said Caldwell.

All they need to do is bring in a repair crew and fix the mess and pay for the problems they created. But when you are a supremacist you can never admit when you are wrong so you try to spread the blame. Like 99% wrong but you were 1% so we don’t have to p[ay. Posted on May 28, 2012 at 7:09pmIt is baffling to me that the woman told them she had food on the stove. How hard is it to send an officer to check it out and to turn off the stove? I mean, we’re not talking rocket science here. She also told them there was a child in the house. Why didn’t they check it out?
And to IcedDragonnite – the owner‘s race doesn’t really matter. When they do a drug bust, they are out after the dealer, regardless of race. Our two major local drug busts were both white dealers.
The reason that the office backtracked on making the repairs is because if they confirmed that they were responsible, they’ll have a major lawsuit on their hands. They are going to have one anyway, but that‘s why they won’t admit it. I hope they have home owner’s insurance or renters insurance.
As for the mistaken address – come on, officers. You all can do better than that. But I do have admit that sometimes the informant gives the wrong information. However, if the cops are doing surveillance, they should be able to figure it out.

Not always……
As an example…..for 2 years, the DEA had this 76-year old woman’s mobile home in north Georgia under surveillance before they decided to raid it….
It turned out to be the wrong address anyway:

“Police raid wrong home, cause heart attack
Posted: May 13, 2010 10:48 AM CDT Updated: May 13, 2010 11:06 AM CDT
To police investigators, the double-wide in rural Polk County was the hiding place of a drug trafficker. But to her family, it was merely the longtime home of a 76 year old widow named Helen Pruett.
“All she did was go to church, go to Walmart, go to the beauty shop, and that’s it,” said Machelle Holl, Pruett’s daughter.
Tuesday morning, police dressed in black paramilitary fatigues, armed with weapons and an arrest warrant surrounded Pruett’s home, knocked on the door and demanded to be let in.
Helen Pruett’s family says she saw them through the window, was frightened, and didn’t believe they were really police.
“She didn’t know what to do. There was banging on the windows, men saying let me in,” said daughter Diana Merrick.
Pruett opened the door – and police almost instantly realized their warrant had the wrong address.”

Really? Ok, how about the same time we have a law to publicly and summarily hang Joe Schmoe that broke that law?
As some one that has worn the “ninja gear” let me fill you in on your ignorance. When you respond to a possible robbery you don’t simply walk up to the door and knock like your Andy Griffith and your in Mayberry. That gear is there to protect me so that I go home at the end of the day to hug my kids. I personally don’t like the idea of officers wearing a balaclava unless its for flash protection. Sadly that is needed these days. “Back in the day” much of this gear was not needed and we COULD walk up and simply knock on the door.
Additionally what law was broken? Yes they went to the wrong address but why? By the time I have recieved a radio call from my dispatcher it has been relayed by as many as 4 people if you included the reporting party, and with a major metroplex it can be many more than that. Any person in that chain can transpose a number or give a similar sounding street but that is not criminal. It’s only criminal if they KNEW it was the wrong house and went there anyway.

Joe Schmoe didn’t swear an oath to Protect and Serve, and Joe Schmoe does not have the Public’s Trust, like police officers who we expect to at least follow the law in the course of enforcing it.
And thank you for your service as a LEO. One of my best and longest known friends was just sworn as an officer,,,and he’d tell you the same thing he told me, no one held a gun to his or your head and made you take the job, you knew you were putting your life in danger when you made the choice.

How is it FEDEX does exactly what you are describing neigh MILLIONS of times a day (going to a correct address reported by a 3rd or 4th party successfully), and not only getting the address right, but delivering it within hours of their promised time anywhere in the world? Are cops and dispatchers not as reliable as our men and women in uniform, because the statistics seem to bear out that conclusion. At least if FEDEX delivers my package next door by mistake my neighbors aren’t at risk of shooting and/or arson death.
Report Post »supermansdad
Posted on May 30, 2012 at 10:44pmIve worked for FEDEX before also, they get it wrong every day, but the biggest reason it works for them is its simple cut-paste for when the vender sends out your order from “Big Box Store X” so if it‘s wrong it’s because you screwed it up. Yet we had non-existant addresses all the time.
Many dispatchers are great at their job but a good chunk are not. They are not paid well and there is high turnover rates, so by the time we get a good one trained up they find a better job.
The article indicates no law that is broken. Officers were dispatched to a location, upon arrival they set up a perimiter. All seems within SOP. Later the building is cleared during which time a fire breaks out, does not say who/what started the fire. Sorry, but dinner can wait an extra few minutes while officers continue to clear the structure. NO KNOWN LAW IS BROKEN! Well, maybe a few culinary laws but eh…
Every action listed in the article is justifiable as it has yet been reported. Had a deputy intentionally knocked over the dinner in a manner to cause a fire or dumped olive oil on the stove that would be different.
Also, most people forget, cops are citizens first!

“No-Knock Raid on Wrong House Terrifies 76-Year-Old Man
Mike Riggs
March 28, 2012
Fred Skinner was eating a piece of toast when police from three different agencies burst through his front door with guns drawn, put the 76-year-old in handcuffs, and began ransacking his house in search of drugs. Minutes later, one of the officers noticed a piece of mail on Skinner’s table. The name on it didn’t match the name for the suspected drug dealer the officers were after. The officers asked Skinner if the name on the mail was his. When Skinner said yes, the officer shouted “Wrong house,” and the entire raid team headed out the way they’d come, without apologizing or explaining themselves. They were, according to a department spokesperson, in too much of a rush to get next door, where their suspect was supposedly located.”

It is because of the reduction of standards to become a police officer and the adrenaline induced euphoria that ensues that takes perfectly normal human beings in Uniforms and makes them idiots on the job. I respect authority until it acts or does stupid to others. All it would have taken was for little extra time to know the situation and then fix it. Now the City will be engaged in a legal battle where only the legal system wins and the folks will barely recoup their losses. And then the taxpayers will then have to pay extra because the Police Budget was busted because of a mistaken bust on the wrong house.

.. go live in a country that has real police brutality, real par-military police, and people who will put you up next to a wall, shoot you, and force your family to pay for the bullet that killed you.
God Bless America, and if you don’t believe in God, then Aliens from another planet bless America or Mr. T bless America or whatever the hell you believe in.
Happy Memorial Day!!!!

Posted on May 28, 2012 at 4:31pm@ Munity,
Your not living in a police state.. Whoever told you that is lying to you.
When you and your family members or you neighbors are being hauled off, never to be seen again, then you have to start to question if you are living in a police state.
Come freedom comes responsiblity, it doesn’t mean that you live in a police state because someone like “end the fed” feels like drugs should be legal and all police who are enforcing that law are pigs or the military should not be police because they are killers.
Come freedom comes responsiblity, and right now we dont have responsiblity in the U.S. < legalize drugs now and everyone will be chewing off peoples' faces.
We need to be involved and monitor our governement so that a police state does not occur. It is up to us.
Happy Memorial Day!

We are trying to prevent it from becoming a police state you imbecile.
My father is from Chile. He left there when the secret police were rounding people up.
Our cops are armed to the teeth( step one ). The next part is disarming the citizens ( step two ). We are one step away from a police state.

Are you kidding me?? Oh we do live in a police state – just look up Lake County Illinois. Yeah the cops over here have only beaten and tased several men to death over the last couple of years, not to mention kept several men in jail and prison despite DNA evidence exonerating them. Some of these men were in prison for up to 20 years….
Oh then of course you have Cook (Crook) County Illinois (Chicago) where cops like John Burge had a 20-year career where he beat people until they confessed to crimes they didn’t commit….
There are youtube video’s of people being murdered by the police in my county (Lake County Illinois)…
Hell, they pretty much tased my dad and broke down my parents door, all because my brother found a first generation Ipod in a PUBLIC BATHROOM in a sandwich shop his girlfriend worked at…… They issued an arrest warrant for my brother – the charge – “failure to return property” – what my brother did is no different than finding a 10 dollar bill and saying “cool it must be my lucky day.”
Oh, the best part is we caught the ensuing incident with the police state all on tape.
All my dad asked for is to see an arrest warrant – which the police state refused to provide him with. Also remember this is all over an 15 dollar Ipod.

I call that police state.
My county is under federal investigation for these authoritarian tactics and wrongful prosecution(s)…

way out of line and they know it. So when they get shot up
just going up to a door, they have no one to blame but themselves.
