Black Atheists Fight Notion That ‘Not Believing in God’ Is ‘a Thing For White People’

African American Atheists Struggle to Come Out & Be HeardAtheism is on the rise in America. Though the growth is slow and non-believers are certainly a minority, atheists, agnostics and “freethinkers” are gaining ground.

While it’s always intriguing to look at the demographics associated with this collective group, it’s even more interesting to examine the subgroups within the larger context of non-believers. Among them are African Americans — a group known for its fervent religiosity.

When examining the overall population, 71 percent of Americans believe in God with absolute certainty. Among African Americans, though, this proportion jumps to 88 percent, showcasing an even more fervent attachment to a belief in a higher power. This information comes from the Pew Forum 2008 United States Religious Landscape Survey.

When looking at atheism, in particular, a true pattern can be seen. While 1.6 percent of the overall population classifies itself as “atheist,” less than one-half of a percent of African Americans identify themselves as the same (this does not include other non-believers — only those who select this, specific designation). Thus, African Americans are less likely to be non-believers and are more likely to believe in God.

Certainly African American atheists are harder to come by, but, like atheists on the whole, they may be increasing in number. In 2009, Ronnelle Adams, a gay atheist, launched a Facebook group called “Black Atheists” to assist him in finding other non-believers.

In two years, the group has grown from 100 members at its start to 947. While not a substantial growth in the eyes of some, considering the small number of atheist African Americans, this signifies a relatively grand uptick.

Here’s a screen shot from the group’s Facebook page:

African American Atheists Struggle to Come Out & Be Heard

Adams also published an atheist children’s book called, “Aching and Praying.” According to a profile on Amazon.com, the book “…illuminates the world of slavery and the role of religion and the Christian bible in justifying and supporting the institution of slavery.”

African American Atheists Struggle to Come Out & Be Heard

Another group, Black Atheists of America, is a non-profit organization that seeks to bridge “…the gap between atheism and the black community.” On the group’s web site, programs that target young people and encourage “critical thinking” are touted.

Watch Ayanna Watson, the group’s founder, explain how to “come out” as an atheist:

And here she is, again, discussing the black community and the difficulty African American atheists often encounter:

Because faith and religion are so prominent among African Americans, atheists may find themselves alone, misunderstood or disconnected from their culture. The New York Times reports that faith is so inherent that some blacks, despite their non-belief, still go to church out of tradition.

These individuals culturally identify with faith and religion, though they lack the personal connection that is typically present in one’s relationship with a higher power. “To be black and atheist, in a lot of circles, is to not be black,” says journalist Jamila Bey.

The Times has more about the struggles that atheist African Americans may have:

Feeling isolated from religious friends and families and excluded from what it means to be African-American, people turn to these sites to seek out advice and understanding, with some of them even finding a date. And having benefited from the momentum online, organizations like African Americans for Humanism and Center for Inquiry-Harlem have well-attended meet-up groups, and others like Black Atheists of America and Black Nonbelievers have been founded.

In 2008, a young man named John Branch posted a YouTube video called “Black Atheism,” during which he explained the dearth in the number of black atheists. The video, as the times notes, has over 42,000 hits. Watch it, below:

The black atheist movement is surely growing, as Facebook groups, organizations, and the like are helping non-believers “come out.” In various cities, non-believers are meeting up to discuss their atheism and to serve as a support system for one another. Newser and the Times have more:

Now black atheist meet-ups are held in cities like New York, Houston, and Atlanta. But the movement is running against two powerful perceptions: that “not believing in God is seen as a thing for white people,” as one black atheist put it, and the idea that religious belief fueled the civil rights movement. True, churches were the only all-black refuges during Jim Crow, “but the story that gets told is, ‘Jesus delivered us,’ ” says one journalist. “Frankly, it was humans who did all the work.”

Considering the unique role that faith and religion play in the black community, it will be interesting to see the battle unfold between believers and atheists, especially as the latter group continues to grow in prominence and influence.

I’d rather live in a world of atheists than in a world of race baiting theists who contort biblical scripture to advocate murder and slavery.

I’m speaking specifically of the Israelites that meet in Oklahoma City. They sit on corners and preach that God hates white man and that we are all evil and should die. Then you have a pope who now believes in social justice, one world gov’t and monetary system and apparently even pushes agenda 21. If this is what religion is going to bring us I’d rather live with atheists.

It’s a good thing many of us are Christians and not religious. I wouldn’t want to be pigeon-holed for my inalienable rights or what a multitude of stupidity that believed black people make great farm implements. I also believe it’s a safe bet to assume that some atheists owned slaves.

um…Hitler was a Christian, I don’t know why people keep stating he was an atheist based upon a comment made at the end of his life and often taken out of context. Besides… do you really want to start pointing out the atrocities of a group of people? Inquisition, Crusades, Witch Trials, Genocide of entire tribes of people…just to name a few and that is from only one sect of religion. And I hate to tell you… the Christian Bible condones Slavery.

In fact these god fearing Blacks statistically are the majority of thieves and murderers in our country according to the US Dept of Justice.

If the demons who once stood in the presence of The Holy One, are more evil than ever. I believe it is safe to say that beleving in the exisence of The Creator does nothing to heal the seperation from him that sin causes. This has nothing to do with skin color. It is about the human heart. Soon their will be no athiest. Every knee will bow and every toung confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. What a glorious Day that will be.

@Moderation You ask a lot of questions you demand answers for. Being rational, non-believing/agnostic, and free-thinking places one in the extremely humbling position of not claiming to have answers to that which is not known (unlike say Hitler or Stalin). If religious dogma satisfies your desire for answers to existence of the universe, than bask in it all you want, Still has nothing to do with truth.. I would like to sum up the questions in your post with one answer for them all “we don’t know, we may never know, thats the truth” If you would like to in small incremental fashion search for truth, there is a large are of academic study called “science” that actually puts forth the labor to find answers rather than just satisfy yourself with the ole “must be god done it” since we don’t know. I don’t really see how that is truth, yet 90% of the world thinks it is.. even better, 100% of flies think **** tastes great, but I’m still not going to eat it.

I should have done a better job showing which were the original questions and which were my answers. To answer your response which is similar to the response that you had(If I understood you correctly). I don’t claim to have all of the answers and I never do, but that doesn’t mean i believe there is some all powerful being that does have all the answers. Plus, how could you get that “religious dogma satisfies my need for answers” with my name being “Moderationisbest” lol

      @Git-R-Done
Yes, but you are making the assumption that they killed those people BECAUSE they are atheists. Whereas when someone is killing in the name of their God, they have a belief it is their God that is telling them to do it. Am I saying that all atrocities done by believers should then be credited and assumed that all believers feel that way? Absolutely not. I’m merely showing that when believers commit acts, they are doing it in the name of their God. When an atheist commit acts, it‘s for their own personal gain and they don’t believe they are commanded by a higher power to do so. Killing mass amounts of people is insanity no matter the reason.

I also love that people think that without a God, I have no reason not to kill everyone. That’s a logic fail argument that people use to make themselves feel better about their belief.

    Two things I find ironic:
#1- The term “freethinkers” is constantly thrown around by outspoken atheists. The problem is, all too many of these atheists are anything but “freethinking” people. When you have to buy billboard space to essentially bash other people’s beliefs- you’ve become a bigot, read the definition:

bigot: one who is obstinately convinced of the superiority or correctness of one’s own opinions and prejudiced against those who hold different opinions

Having an open mind goes against their religion…which brings me to ironic point #2…

These outspoken (dare I say militant) atheists are now getting together, meeting, and even asking for atheist “chaplains” in the military.

In other words, these atheists have become a religion of their own- one lacking compassion, forgiveness, and are religiously self-centered. Oh yeah, let’s look at a definition for religion:

religion: a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance

How NEEDY Atheists and Gays are for Acceptance is Very Interesting! If they were truly the “freethinkers” they say they are, they would be living in the courage of their convictions and not giving a rat’s backside about what others think.

As it is, they are weak and whiney and tantrum throwing and, therefore, bringing ridicule down on themselves. They are the very silly and small minded and self absorbed who are taking up space on this planet.

IF they would get over themselves and shut up and sit down and re-think their beliefs and values, they just might find their outlook broadening a bit.

      Grassroots

Why do you say Atheists want to be accepted? It’s not a matter of acceptance when it comes to atheism, it’s a matter of not getting beliefs shoved in our face.

I for one am an atheist that doesn’t care about religious symbols. If I see a cross, I don‘t get offended and I think it’s silly for anyone to get offended over such trivial things. Most of my friends are evangelical Christians and I love them dearly. My aunt and uncle are Mormon and I have two Jewish friends.

That being said, one of those friends is a Pastor at a church and openly admits he wants the Bible and prayer to be the main focus around creating public policy. Stuff like THAT I will argue against. Again, I won‘t create pointless billboards that are meant to stir up anger and have no meaning but I won’t stand by as people try to creep religion into our Government even more then it is now. For instance, I think it’s silly for congress to waste time on voting “In God we Trust” remaining the US motto despite no one trying to change it. I hope you would agree with me that it’s a waste of time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you thought it was a good idea.

Both sides are hypocritical. Both sides want to put up their own symbols and billboards, then get offended when they see a symbol or billboard of the other group.

Everyone is missing the crux, which is, these @$$ hats want to generate $$ from their religious beliefs. What? How can I say that atheism is a religion? I don’t, they do. Atheists now want an Atheist chaplin for armed services members. Oh yes, Atheism is the “new ” religion on the block, but doesn’t it fly in the face of reality to suggest that Atheists need a chaplin. Imagine how services would be conducted. Since praying is a no-no, I guess we’ll have to start with an anti-God invocation (read: rant) which segways into the . . . well . . . sermon. I can only imagine . . . “Brothers and sisters of the faith, welcome to the Holy House of the Righteous Outspoken. Let us recite: There is no God : There is no Heaven or hell: Therefore, since there is no God, our inalienable rights can be successfully removed from our constitution. Free speech? No way, man! The right to peacefully assemble and petition the government? Forget about it! You see, without God‘s divine guidance and our founding father’s wisdom in reflecting their beliefs in God, our rights mentioned above could not, long exist. This is true because anything man gives, man can take away. I could go on a bit, but, trying to change the mind of an atheist is futile and pointless . . . kinda like their argument. I say that these “good” atheists are in it for the money, I suppose because they can touch it, feel it, smell and taste it: unlike faith, truth, love, and all of the other intangibles. Thanks, Dave

@dave…It is kind of funny to me that most atheist’s are even willing to hold money at all…Don’t want you to raise a cross, say the pledge, or even say “God bless” after a sneeze..But have no issue what so ever about having a handful of “In God We Trust” in their pocket…I also love the line” I just don’t want God pushed on me.” While at the same time pushing their non God beliefs on me…More double talk….It’s everywhere…And just to throw something out there, what does race have to do with any of this? If your a so called “freethinker” …

Hi There! Nice to meet you! : )

The above article, written from the Atheist perspective, talks about certain Atheists having a problem “coming out” and forecasts a “battle,” The same tone is in the previous article, here on TheBlaze, about Atheists believing they are being persecuted at Christmas.

It appears that Atheists are seeing conflct where there is none. Which causes me to wonder: IF Atheists, are firmly convinced they are right, why is it so important to them that those outside of their beliefs approve of and accept them?

I am a Christian! I am firmly convinced that my beliefs are the correct beliefs. You and I can have a conversation on any issue in passing; or, we could be neighbors; or, you could be my cousin’s best friend; or?; and it doesn’t matter to me whether or not you approve of and accept my core beliefs. You not agreeing with me about Christianity vs Atheism won’t ruin my day. Why is it so important to an Atheist that I, a Christian, approve of and accept his / her beliefs?

Stop and think about the “science” of atheism! It is an impossibility that whites and blacks could have evolved at the same time! It is imposiible that the deviations (evolutionary paths) could progress differently and still be equal! Either whites are superior, or blacks are superior by evolutionary law!

Evolution as a science demands a winner and a loser! Race superiority is the law of atheism!

Wow, I just heard there is a very very dangerous virus locked up in Europe in a vault that is one of the most dangerous viruses ever created by men. Really? I didn’t know that. Hey, here’s some more fire coming down from Heaven: do you know if they release that Virus, they will also be weeding their souls out of existence forever? Yes, because good souls float on the Holy Sea of Waters, and therefore as millions and millions of people die, the more wicked souls will be shoved down to the bottom of that sea. In essence that why Jesus said it is better to have a millstone tied around one’s neck and thrown into the deepest sea.

Yes, but I just find the figures so hard to reconcile. I see from looking up the report that 16% are “unaffiliated” and I suspect that many others gave any religion just to get rid of the guy doing the survey.

I took your question literally, thinking you missed it in the article, no poke intended.

As for the survey, I agree many probably answered with what they thought the surveyor wanted to hear, or said something to get the person to go away. And of course, the structure of the questions can lead to the answers you want (note any political type poll or survey).

As for the 71%, I have seen figures like this in other newbits, etc over time, so in my mind I don’t think this is too far off the mark.

Curious: You tend to answer surveys on a “just say what they want to hear” way?
Do you sign petitions just because they are offered?
Do you give everytime because you are asked to?

To say that the 71% of people announced that they are God fearing with absolute certainty and then to have it questioned makes me question whether this is a subtle hope for a “slight of hand” for others to doubt the survey and thus doubt that at least 7 out of 10 people wholeheartedly Love God?

To be honest, its the 3 out of 10 that bothers me. 30% means things are growing at a huge rate and THAT I sincerely doubt. Now if you are questioning why the faithful number is so low, then I’d understand your skepticism.

There are a whole lot more that is Atheist. For an Atheist to lie is a small thing, and therefore many who say they believe in God are liars, because since they don’t believe in God, then lying about it is a small thing. And since they are also deceitful having more deceitful power when they are around the spiritual and because they are afraid of people’s opinion of them, they lie.

The biggest lie many of us atheists express is to ourselves that we believe in a higher power. I lied to myself for years that I truly believed in God, telling myself that despite everything that I found wrong with the concept of God, his existence was undeniable. When my 9 year old cousin, sweetest girl in the world who never did anything to anybody was taken from her family, that made me stop lying to myself. I don’t believe in a god, goddess, or gods, and I don’t think I ever did.

That‘s one of the reasons why I don’t have a problem with those who are religious. You are able to be honest with yourselves, a trait that I still find remarkable. I may not be a fan of religion, but I do find the religious to be strong, good people with great morals (though at times I believed they can be… misused). Even to this day I doubt my belief, or lack there of.

(Now, notice how kind my words are, how I insulted no one and praised those who disagree with me. Are there any who are willing to do the same and have a nice conversation, or is it going to be more name calling?)

Well… I dont know about you, but saying “GD” is so much fun, it just rolls off the tongue so well.

On a serious note, the reason a lot of atheists don’t come out and say it is because in a lot of communities its akin to committing social suicide (especially in the Bible Belt). You can lose your home, job, friends, family and even your life just because you don’t believe in the same fables as everyone else. Its not because lieing is a small thing, I think your still under the delusion that you need a divine role model to have morals. Besides… why would I want to follow a being as a moral compass that condones rape, murder, incest, genocide, homophobia, racism, slavery, sexism and a plethora of other horrendous actions including eternal damnation for simply being born different?

The “surge” to 1.6 percent of the public is probably explainable. Atheists are actively recruiting now, and advertising, and agitating. People are worried and need to do something to feel like they are in control. So now Atheists are convincing themselves that not believing is actually a belief system. Add to that that now we are trying to add a demographic of race to the mix. What a mess.

If we don’t stop drawing lines between each other, and whining and pointing at the other guy; how will Americans every care for each other.
