A 55-year-old woman shot in the foot during a Black Friday robbery attempt at the Walmart in Myrtle Beach, SC did not freeze up in shock.
She came back guns blazing.

After a robber put a round into her foot, the middle-aged woman ripped her own pistol out of her vehicle’s center console and fired 2 or 3 warning shots in the air.
Her two assailants ran from the scene with the victim’s purse. Police then arrived at the scene.
Another woman with the victim at the time of the assault told officers the victim and a 25-year-old male were at the trunk of their vehicle when she heard the victim scream, according to a police incident report.
After the warning shots were fired, the witness stated, one suspect headed toward the Walmart parking lot and the other toward a wooded area on Grissom Parkway in Myrtle Beach.
The 55-year-old victim and the male bystander were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their injury status was not disclosed at the time of this report.
Police are still searching for the two suspects.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 1:17pmThis woman needs to be disarmed until she takes a firearms safety class. If someone shoots at you, you either return fire or not. Discharging a firearm into the air is the most reckless, irresponsible action that could be taken in that situation(or any situation for that matter)!
Report Post »At least people in the immediate vicinity have a chance to take cover when they hear the first shot, but those bullets fired into the air can easily come down somewhere out of earshot where people don’t even know anything happened.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 1:33pmI wouldn’t criticize her for shooting in the air, you don’t know the background she was facing. Firing in the air did what it was intended to do, save her life and chase the robbers away. I‘m all in for shooting the SOB’s in the head but not everyone can make a shot like that under stress, with a bullet in their foot while scared for their life. She misses and kills a kid and she gives gun ownership a bad name.

Absolutely! I don’t know what other people are criticizing her for.
There must have been a crowd out there and if she misses the robber and hits someone else, what would they say then. And if you’ll consider that she was already hit in a foot and there were two of them… All I got to say is RESPECT! And like AL J ZIRA said, she accomplished the main goal – stayed alive and had them running. What else she could do?

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 7:46pmMy wife carries a 9mm Sig Sauer 229 SAS. 13+1 shots, and she knows how to group them, tap, tap. Like MILS said, center mass.
I highly recommend a semi automatic as opposed to a revolver. Much safer, even though it has no safety. In a quick decision situation, revolvers with safety’s can cost you time and your life and only 6 shots. With a semi-auto handgun, a child will have a very hard time chambering a round, the slide isn’t easy to do until trained, but of course KEEP IT OUT OF REACH. Don’t keep a round chambered, that can be dangerous even with a 10lb first pull. It only takes a split second to chamber a round and squeeze. First round is double action and the rest are single action (5lb). Very reliable weapon, super accurate. More expensive then other makers but they are worth it in my opinion.
I know, some will now jump on me with all of their expertise and rip me apart, bring it on, LOL. To each their own.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 9:13pmFor each of you that says not to criticize…you obviously have not owned, nor should own a gun that you would pull out in public. If you are worried about missing your target you shouldn’t even have your finger on the trigger! If she was able to go to her car to get it and come back, there was NO IMMEDIATE threat which means she will go to jail. Shooting in the air is the exact same thing as shooting at your target in a crowd and missing…she is responsible for wherever those 2 bullets land. Like my Father-in-law teaches during his defensive hand gun classes…“Keep you booger hook off the loud button unless your sight is on target and you want to destroy it”.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 7:44amWent and read the entire story which is linked above. The 55 year old woman shot in the air, because there were other people around and did not want to accidentally shoot an innocent bystander. Before anyone comments, you should take the time to read the entire story (I should have too). The woman who was shot and the man who was pistol whipped, did not fire the warning shots. It was a third woman who was able to retrieve her pistol from the truck. After reading the whole story, I would have shot the assailants who were still attacking the other two people. If you are going to carry a gun, train with it and be prepared to shoot someone with it. I don’t think she was confident enough in her skills, that is why she shot in the air. She got lucky this time, the punks ran away. It could have had a much worse ending.

I hear allot of talk about training and practice but just as important as being able to hit what you are aiming at is knowing when and when not to shoot. If you shoot someone by accident or more correctly, lack of judgement, they are just as dead as if you wanted to kill them. Whenever you fire a gun check out the background FIRST. If you can’t be safe with a gun then you have no business firing one, I don‘t care if you can shoot the hair off of a gnat’s butt.

Report Post »Absolutely correct.
In addition, firing in the air is never good. If you fire straight up, the speed of the falling bullet will be about 140 fps. If its a .45 it could do some damage. As the angle of the shot decreases, the retained energy increases. At 45 to 50 degrees the bullet still has enough power to be lethal. Better to shoot at the threat or hold fire. If the noise created is the intended weapon, then the round should be put into a flower bed or a hill – somewhere where you control the outcome – not fire and pray no innocent person is hit.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 11:46amThe PRIDE I hear from so many posts on this site breaks my heart. IF you claim to be a Christian then be one. Pride is from the devil. Humility is from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Don’t listen to me read it for yourself and look at his humble walk. He didn’t talk about his rights, he laid them down for each and everyone of us, took the cross and became sin and I PRAISE him for it. If I die today who cares then I will be with him and what could be better!
I’m all for defending oneself. I got jump by three guys one night in a parking lot. The first guy hit me in the head with a pipe. God filled my body with his grace in strength because I didn’t go down. He swung again, I was able to duck (leaning back as far as I could) and he missed. I was in a fight for my life. I grabbed the guy with the pipe and smashed he face into the side of the car multiple times. His buddy ran up from behind and stabbed me four times in the back with a Phillips screw driver. It missed my spinal cord by less then an inch. I‘m glad I didn’t kill anyone of those men. Who knows how God was going to use them. Example the Apostle Paul.
What if you killed them and you could have scared them off like this woman apparently did. Would it be worth it to wake up night after night with the faces of the people you killed. I’m all for defending myself, but I wouldn’t want to kill someone unless it was absolutely necessary. It sounds like it wasn’t. I would have faith in the Lord and let him be

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 12:05pmAgree completely. You do not want to harm an innocent person. Know what is behind and around the “target”. Even “warning” shots fire into the air can inadvertently harm someone. Few really know how they would react in a similar situation.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 5:04pm@namron019 Good post. I was stabbed because I held back from hurting the 18 year old. Under the situation the boy would have had serious head injuries if I didn’t. That is the disadvantage of the “good” guys. Looking back I wish I didn’t have a weapon to deal with the situation and just thrashed him with my empty hands – I have the ability to do so and that’s the way it should have been — for me.
It’s not easy for everyone to damage or kill others — that’s a good thing. That is why the issue of PRE-EMPTIVE war on Iran or any other country is evil. And you don’t use a nuke if attacked; you fight to win quickly in more reasonable ways. You don’t fight evil by becoming the same thing.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:23pm@Rickfromillinois: Good training INCLUDES conditioning to look around and beyond your target for more attackers and safety hazards. Shooting into the air because she couldn’t get a “safe” shot is a reckless rationalization. If you can’t get off a shot safely, you don’t shoot. You’re shooting your attacker because a a reasonable and immediate threat to your life or a third party exists. A warning shot suggests this is not the case, meaning there is no justification for deadly force.
@namron019: Pride? Seriously? You don’t shoot to scare. You shoot because there is an IMMEDIATE threat, and failing to shoot means you’re dead. Why is this such a difficult concept?
Report Post »Dismayed Veteran
Posted on November 28, 2011 at 9:06amI agree. While we would all like to think we would shoot calmly at center mass, we don’t know what she saw beyond her target.
We can get into her mind based on her actions.
One, she was suddenly in an armed robbery scene. This means she was not in a mind set to engage in a fire fight.
Two, she was shot. This is a big deal if you have never be hit. She kept her focus while wounded. She had to go from a handgun condition of readiness level 2 or 3 to firing her weapon in a combat situation.
Three, she defended herself. This woman is brave.

If it had been me, I’d have probably shot the bastards in the ass and then claimed they were still firing at me as they ran away! I might have had to run over and shoot a few rounds of their own so the police investigation would corroborate my claim–see how complicated it gets! I wonder if Obamacare is going to pay for her foot? What about pain and suffering? And, I’d bet the assailants bought their guns with Food Stamps–or, at least had free school lunches, along with their free education! Time to pull the plug on ALL government funding back to its citizens! Once government gets this big, business has to get this big to survive all the regulation. Posted on November 25, 2011 at 12:16pmTo some of the later comments: learning how and when to use a handgun includes gun safety and when and when not to fire. Warning shots are never, repeat, never an option. You either know your target and what is in your line of fire or you withhold. However, in a situation like this you have two and only two options – return fire or retreat to cover and/or concealment with the gun in the ready position.
As I said, get training and than practice. In a real life situation you will only be half as good as your best day of practice.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:26amSTUPID!!!! If you clear leather you should be trying to stop the threat. No warning shots!!! “Warning shots” are a good way to injure or kill an innocent bystander. Align the sights and put two rounds into the center of mass of the protagonist. If that doesn’t halt them then one round to the head.
And chose the most gun you can handle accurately. My middle aged 5′3″ wife is quite capable with either a 357. magnum or a 45 ACP. Either one will reliably stop a large man. Don’t bother with a 9MM or smaller caliber gun. They are quite capable in the hands of an expert but with out regular practice and training in combat pistolcraft they are more dangerous to the shooter than the shootie. Finally PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! The time spent on the range is the best investment you can make if you are going to carry.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:21amThis morning I got up and read more then one story MISSING most of the information we used to get when journalists were trained to tell the whole story. No difference here at the Blaze.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:20amEvery law abiding citizen should carry a gun. You will see crime drop quickly. Instead of shooting in the air, we do need to make sure they can shoot to kill! Good for the 55 year old anyway.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 12:14pmthat’s why you always need two or three. One on you, one in the glove compartment and if you carry a purse, in the purse.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:17amWait! The article say’s she fired 2-3 warning shots in the air….That isn’t exactly, “returning fire.”

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:26amThe only way I can make this make sense – that she didn’t shoot at the people who actually shot her – is that she could not responsibly shoot at them without risk to bystanders, so she she just made noise.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 12:45pmLet’s see, I’ve been shot in the foot….yeah I’ll scare them away all right. It was the WRONG thing to do to shoot into the air. Those slugs could have killed an innocent person. Much better to have ended the crime spree on the spot, it would have been self-defense, her life was in imminent danger.

Posted on November 25, 2011 at 10:25amSo the victim lost a purse, has a hole in her foot, and she launched two missiles into the air (no report on what they crashed into when they came down). No crime prevented here.
