Blacks ‘Ruin Neighborhoods’: See the Man-on-the-Street Interview So Racist It Overshadowed an Arson Case

Back in May of 2011, an arsonist lit up South Buffalo’s Mackinaw Street by lighting the home of a recent African immigrant on fire. The arsonist himself was not captured, but as police determined that the case was one of “Arson for hire,” this ended up being less of a pressing concern than finding the man who had hired the arsonist to set the fire. To that end, the police arrested 58-year-old Michael Fijal and charged him with the crime, even though he hadn’t purposefully set the blaze himself.
Now, perhaps unsurprisingly, Federal investigators suspect that the crime might have been a hate crime, and are looking for evidence of this. Fijal has not yet been tried.
However, none of this is the reason this story of a depraved, but unfortunately not uncommon crime has captured a much wider audience than just the residents of South Buffalo. No, what made this story become so notable is a truly extraordinary man-on-the-street interview that the local TV station WIVB-TV conducted with one of the unnamed residents of South Buffalo. Even from the short clip included in this initial report, it’s clear that the reporter, Ed Drantch, was having trouble believing what he was hearing. And indeed, those few seconds of tape sparked a media scandal, with some people believing the man was a symbol of all the horrid irredeemable racism that has yet to be solved in American culture, and others believing him to be a blunt truth-teller. Pressure mounted until the station, WIVB-TV, had to release the full, unedited interview with the man. Watch it here:
As you see, the full context of the interview does this unnamed would-be racial realist no favors. He explicitly singles out African Americans and excoriates them for “wrecking” parts of Buffalo, and does it with such blase calm that it’s difficult not to be a little unnerved. The interviewer, Drantch, has trouble even getting his questions out at points. And more troubling still is the interviewee’s assertion that “A lot of people feel this way; they just won’t say it.”
It was at this point that the story began to go viral, as a local radio show hosted by two shock jocks calling themselves Shredd and Ragan picked it up and actually managed to get hold of the man involved, who seemed to want to correct some of what was said. However, when the interview opened, it became clear that far from wanting to correct his own sentiments, he just wanted to correct the original report for getting his neighborhood wrong. The two hosts didn’t let him get off with just that, though, and managed to get through a deeply uncomfortable interview which outed the man in question not so much as a hardened bigot, but simply as a very excessively sheltered human being. He also gave his name, which out of respect for his safety, we are not printing.
However, at this stage it isn’t just a pair of random radio hosts who want to talk to this strange, “Gangs Of New York”-esque figure. In fact, a prominent local politician wants to have a few words with him. Ellicott District Councilman Darius Pridgen, an African-American, issued a challenge to the man, which was faithfully reported by WIVB:

Thank you for your coverage which exposed the views of a gentleman who expressed his very strong views concerning minorities and racial separation. This was a very difficult story to watch but one that I feel is very necessary if our city is to ever move forward in race relations.
The coverage of this subject is too important to isolate to one story centering around the gentleman’s comments. Leaving this as an open ended story may nurture more racial hatred and racism in our city. I believe this is the right time to take a giant step forward in bringing a clearer appreciation to the issue of housing discrimination, prejudice and racism in Western New York. I am asking that your station host a discussion on race in Western New York. I think that an intelligent, moderated, constructive conversation has the potential to heal, bring understanding and move our community in a positive direction.
Finally I would like to reach out to the gentleman who started this very important conversation to invite him on a very friendly tour through the Eastside to show him portions that he may have never seen and in turn take a tour of his neighborhood and hear his concerns. I would pay full expense for the tour, protect his identity, and agree to share our, hopefully adjusted, insights publicly if he would allow.

Where will this odd case of racial animus go from here? Who knows. But those looking for a symbol of persistent racist tension in American society need look no further.

It is interesting that charges of “Hate Crimes” seems to protect special interests of the left. I believe this is not instituted to protect black or gays. I think it is put in place for when Commies are confronted on the street.
What is a hate crime? If I threaten someone and then punch them in the face, it is assault and battery. If during that event, an expletive is used in passion its a hate crime? That is speech. You still have they assault and battery what purpose does the “hate crime” serve?

And, yes, they are in place to dish out extra punishment based upon the perpetrator’s thought processes. When thought becomes a crime freedom is lost.

They talk all the time about how prejudice white people are. Why are their bigotry not a concern? How long will we have this double standard. When at least 80 percent vote for a communist party like the Democrats and and statistics that show how much crime is rampant in black community then pretty soon the truth has to be told. The fact is black racism is not being addressed but even justified and it if it is not shunned then this country is going to come apart.

I live in NYC and I have seen white kids gang up on black kids and also have seen black kids gang up on white kids. A big part of the problem is people who think like you do and think like the guy on the video who is obviously a racist like yourself. I am all for freedom of speech and I am also all for real justice to penalize people who commit crimes, no matter what their ethnicity is.
Sure there are black people who hate white people, but in my experience there are far more white people who hate black people. When I lived down south for a while I could not believe how many redneck racist hillbillies there were. The reason for this degree of racism is due to parents and other adult figures in a childs life that teach the children to hate certain groups of people. It is also due to general stupidity and ignorance. These racist rednecks need to break the cycle of hate and stupidity…..

People were allowed to own homes who had no business owning homes. They didn’t work for the money needed, they got a break from the government (rent subsidized housing) or they were given loans for more than they could comfortably afford. My first car, in 1981, was a 1979 Gremlin, been in a wreck so the wheel well was about 4 inches thick with bondo, there was a bondo repair across the hood and the hatchback was filled with chemical fertilizer. My dad said since we lived in the country, he’d buy my first car for me, but it wasn‘t going to be a pretty one because I wouldn’t appreciate it because someone else bought it for me. I thought I appreciated it, until I joined the Navy and bought my first car with my money. I REALLY took care of that car, washed it every weekend, etc. It was a 1984 Chevette. Not a great car, but I bought it with my money…I was making the payments with my paycheck. I lived in government subsidized apartments for a while, and believe me, they don’t take care of them.

It is summer again in Chicago. There are gangs of blacks roaming the Gold Coast again. There is history in the south. What about the North, west & Midwest?
While unilateral good actions by whites might work (big if), it would be much better if we could get the race baiters such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farahkhan, Leonard Jeffries, Cornel West, Shiela Jackson Lee, Cynthia McKinney, Reverend Wright and many others off their soap box.
Personally, I would replace them with Bill Cosby, J.C. Watts, Thomas Sowell, Walter E. Williams, Blackwell, Allen West (Forget the racist backstabbing, opportunist Colin Powell).
If you made these replacements we would not end black or white racism. But it would be a great start, starve racism of fuel & tamp down incitement.
I don’t care what you say about the south. I think the policies that you probably espouse as a liberal in in good standing such as affirmative action, gratuitous immigration & white guilt have more to do with racism than what southerners may or may not be teaching their kids. If you are honest which you are not, you would know that kids pick as much form their peer group & overall society (not just local) as from parents.
If we stationed a 100 unmarried white southerners in West Africa as military advisers, there would be a whole bunch coming back home with African wives. That only gives lie to your belief system.

Technically it’s about motivation. Keep in mind you aren’t punished for the motivation until you take action. Hate crime legislation was designed around the idea that purposely targeting a person because of their identity does damage not just to that person but to the community at large; it is not a separate crime, but an addition penalty for a crime already committed.
You might think of it in the case of murder. Killing someone by accident results in less severe penalties than killing someone in the heat of the moment, which results in less sever penalties than tracking someone down, planning out the crime, and killing them. By this understanding, hate crimes are as constitutional as the different degrees of murder.
Note: Not saying that I agree with hate crimes legislation. But it is likely constitutional.

Similar idea to poker champions wearing large sunglasses today. A bald-faced, or unbearded, liar would be a good enough liar that he wouldn’t need to grow a beard to do so.

You do realize that there are more white people in this country? It does not excuse racism, but in this example comparison by just number is misleading. Perhaps, a percentage would be a better comparison? Racism does stem from ignorance and indoctrination – color has no effect on this either.

There are no irrelevant details. If your message or opinion is important it deserves to come across clearly. When a poster doesn’t care enough about his own opinion to proofread, it makes it difficult for us to give that message our full attention. Poor spelling and grammar draw the reader’s attention away from the core of the message. Why should the reader care about the message if the writer clearly does not?
That being said, if one’s sole purpose is just to blow off a little steam and he/she doesn’t care if anyone reads or understands the message, then clarity is unimportant and the writer should just bang away at that keyboard until they feel better.
As for myself, I like to read people’s thoughts and opinions. Those that have clear messages may alter my thought process and current opinion. That is the power you have as a writer. To discard that power due to sheer laziness seems like a terrible waste.

My explanation was VERY clear. It is unbelievable that two main issues that are under the same umbrella (as people would say) FREEDOM OF SPEECH, but they are treated so,so, diffrent. Freedom of speech concerning gays and lebisans will land you either in jail or in a court room and the other Freedom os speech of racisim will land you applauses and compassion because it is your right of Freedom of speech. I do not agree with those beliefs, however, but because his ideas differ from that of , the interviewer, the local politician, the dj’s, etc., he is being attacked by anyone who disagrees. That’s wrong, in so many ways.
Perhaps the initial interview should have given him an answer sheet to the questions he was going to pose, so that he can stay in line with what they WANTED to hear.
Bottom line? If you ask a question, respect it, even if you disagree. An honest answer is NOT an open invitation for attack. Grow up. It’s part of what America is.

Whoa, correcting someone’s error is an attack? I think I’m starting to see your problem. When I point out your lies, I’m not attacking you: I’m pointing out lies. When I point out errors it’s not to attack someone: it’s to point out their error. Heck, in this case I even gave the relevant background.
If sharing knowledge or truth is “attacking someone” in your mind, I think I can see why you’re so inclined to disagree with me. The world must seem like a very antagonistic place to you.

Maine has the lowest crime rate per capita in the country, and also the the lowest percentage of black inhabitants. The District of Cloumbia has the highest crime rate per capita in the country and the highest percentage of black inhabitants. The stats come from the F.B.I. and the U.S. Census Bureau. I understand I will be called a racist for pointing that out, but not to worry. The liberal definition of a racist is somebody who has the sense to recognize the truth and the chutzpa to cite it.

Posted on June 13, 2012 at 4:52pmMy aunt lived in a nice suburb of Detroit. Blacks started moving into the neighborhood. When I went to see her about 10 years later, it looked like a ghetto. Unmowed lawns, peeling paint, garbage and litter everywhere, men drinking on the porch steps, and worst of all, children running out into the road. I asked my aunt why they didn’t keep their houses kept up and she said, “I’m not sure they know how.” I asked why they didn’t hire someone to at least mow their lawns, like she did (she was by then a widow), and she said “I don’t know if they even care. I think they spend their money on booze and those funny smelling cigarettes”. (She meant marijuana.)
We tried to get her to move to keep her safe but she insisted she would live there until “something bad” happened to her or she died. She finally died and her daughter was dismayed at how little she got for the house she grew up in, even though it was in good shape. “Bad neighborhood” was all she’d say.
My point is, I get where this guy is coming from…

Unless you want to erase the legal distinction between manslaughter and murder, you have to accept that the law has to punish thought when dealing with violence. Unless you think that burning crosses in the yard of civil rights advocates and lynching “uppity” minorities is constitutionally protected behavior, you have to agree that the idea of “hate” when defining intent is vital.

What kind of story is this? What is it with you guys? They didn’t capture the arsonist trying to kill the black guy, they just caught the guy who started the fire but didn’t mean to?

Twice in as many weeks I’ve personally had to run off groups of young black men looking in the windows of my neighbors and checking to see if their car doors are locked. I literally kicked one in the ass as he was leaving because his feet weren’t moving fast enough. I told him to run, but he maintained a leisurely pace. I applied foot to ass.
It doesn’t matter to me what color people are, when they do crap like this. It just happens that it has usually been young black men in my case. It is what it is.

In my business I speak to people from all over the country and they’ll loosen up and tell you what they really think in private once they become acquainted with you.
This little twerp, JZS, thinks all he has to do is make scurrilous attacks interjecting “racist” and “hater” every so often and it‘s going to intimidate people to the point where they’ll use the language he wants to hear and the homosexual agenda will be realized at last. And, yes, he IS that naive. And yes, he IS that delusional.
I’ve seen outrage among people being expressed more now than at any other time on almost every forum that runs a story involving black on white crime, especially the black on white mob beatings.
A lot of what this guy said in this story can be found in the comments section of the T.V.networks, newspapers and many blogs that would never have been expressed before Obama was elected.
Also, these last three years have evolved to the point where talk show hosts are venturing into racial topics they wouldn’t have touched before.
And, just five years ago we would never have read the “fed up” comments from people like Derbyshire and Buchanan.
Times are changing.

The problems you find in the inner city black neighborhoods are the same problems you will find in the poorest white neighborhoods, be they in the city or in more rural areas. It is poverty. Funny these problems disappear is less impoverished, middle class neighborhoods, regardless of the racial make-up.
But instead of focusing on that, racists like Horsecrazy and others think that if we were just to get rid of all the blacks, the country would be free of crime, drugs and poverty.

For instance, WALKABOUT produces a single statistic, not from any verifiable source by a community activist (and being racist, WALKABOUT would have dismissed this statistic if it had come from a black source, but since it can be used against blacks, he will happily use it), that has been drilled down, purposefully, to fit a specific agenda. Look closely at what Mo says in WALKABOUT’s link. Not that 85% of crimes were being committed by blacks, but that 85% of a certain crime against Asians was by blacks.
Statistics don’t lie, but liars will use statistics.

I was treated differently and had to endure racist “jokes” all the time. I finally extricated myself from the uncomfortable situation. As far the subject of this article, I can vouch that non-whites say the same thing about whites. They’re just held to a different standard when they speak out, a more forgiving and sympathetic standard.

The first few blk families were fine and got along well with the neighbors. About the time there were a quarter blk families things changed. Blx you had known for years wouldn’t talk you anymore and the threats began. The neighborhoods DID get trashed in both value and condition. And most assuredly, do NOT be the last white person in the neighborhood as often as not, they were literally killed.
What this guy says might sound offensive, but there’s a lot more truth to it than most people want to believe.

In my opinion, there are biological differences between black people and white people. These differences manifest themselves in intelligence, violent crime rates, and the resulting IQ scores and housing values of differing communities. It is a very segragated city, the east side has a lot of drug crime, which with a 20% grad. rate and the cushy welfare system to keep people voting the way the powers to be want this what you get. It is sickening to see how the democrats have ruined so many people.

If the middle and lower class white community had versions of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and all those leeches that live on keeping their people dependent on government and welfare, maybe it would be the other way around. Maybe it would be the blacks not wanting whites coming into their neighborhoods, lowering the property values and increasing crime.
When will people learn that race is not the problem. Culture is the problem. Dependency is the problem. Big government is the problem. Drugs and easy answers are the problem. Heros or rather anti-heros are the problem. Drug dealers that drive the only good cars in the neighborhood and athletes that are the only ones that kids see succeed are the problem. The solution is freedom, initiative, risk taking, hard work, faith, education. Race is not the problem and it is not the solution either.

In my travels camping across America I have observed white trash living in trailer parks, and most of those people were uneducated, ignorant racists who also happened to be mostly Republicans! Again, in my travels camping across America I met all kinds of people from all kinds of ethnicities, races, and religions and I met people who were piss poor and people who were millionaires, sometimes a hundred times over a ‘regular’ millionaire, and everthing in between. And you know what? People who were treated with respect, treated me with respect! It did not matter their race or how much money they had! Trust me, a little respect goes a long way. And racists like the many here on The Blaze keep perpetuating the hate and racism. I could not believe how many people down south still displayed the Confederate flag either on their pickup trucks or on their houses! These people need to get over it already! The south lost the war! And the confederate flag is a symbol of a failed hate-based society, much like the Nazi swastika. And because of the numerous POS human beings much like the majority of blaze contributors and Fox “News” employees and viewers who perpetuate stereotypes and racism, it seems that, unfortunately it will take a few more generations before we as Americans can truly be equal and free as our Constitution asserts!

The statistics say that anywhere between 70 and 82 percent of black children are born in a single parent home with no father indicated or present. Over 50 percent of all preganciesin this country, overall, to girls under the age of 18 is in the black community. Keep in mind that blacks comprise 13% of the population. Homicide is the fifth leading cause of death, overall, among black males in this country. Some studies suggest that homicide is the leading cause of death among black males 12 to 19 years of age. The incidence of incarceration, the number of blacks males is 780% higher than whites when it is extrapolated over the population percentages. Blacks and whites have equal percentages when it comes to the welfare rolls. This is often used as the proof that blacks do not recieve more welfare than whites. One only has to keep in mind that blacks are 13% of the population and whites are 68% of the population. Simple math reveals the truth.
Africa is the murder, rape and AIDS capital of the world.

It is hard to tell with the Miami story. Eugene may have had a chip on his shoulder. How much so we won’t find out from the MSM. We do know he brain was probably fried. There was a white buy in Miami on bath salts that was picked up. He coming on to a 3 year old & not the mother. I cannot figure that one out. Either he saw the child 1st & it was target fixation or he is just a perv or maybe his brain was just that fried too.
