Is it really Woodstock’s fault?
A new study undertaken by John Jay College of Criminal Justice claims that Catholic sex abuse cases can be partially explained by the cultural shifts that occurred during the 1960s. This much-anticipated report cost $2 million to complete and was partially-funded by the United States Conference of Bishops.
Among the study’s findings, researchers concluded that the abuse of minors by priests had no single “cause.” Perhaps the most controversial takeaway, though, is that the report claims that social changes in America influenced the rise in abuse cases that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. According to The Washington Post, the report concludes that:
This increase in abusive behavior is consistent with the rise in other types of ‘deviant’ behavior, such as drug use and crime, as well as changes in social behavior, such as an increase in premarital sexual behavior and divorce.
Clearly, there are many who will question these findings. It is particularly interesting that an organization associated with church funded parts of this study. Susan Jacoby, an atheist and blogger for the Post, isn’t buying in to the findings. She takes particular issue with the study’s claims that cultural shifts had an influence over the free will of individual priests. She also challenges the claim that there was, indeed, a surge of molestations in the 1960s and 1970s, she writes:
Karen Terry, the report’s principal investigator and dean of research and strategic partnerships at John Jay College, said in an interview that although the number of abuse cases rose in the Sixties, she could not say with any certainty whether many cases from the 1920s through the 1950s went unreported. “Was there more abuse in the 50s than we reported in our graph? She asked. “No doubt. However, there is still an increase in the 1960s. That’s been shown each year the data has come in.”
“No doubt” is the understatement of this century and the last. John Jay College also has something to answer for, because researchers gave their institution’s prestigious imprimatur to a report based on data supplied by the organization that did everything possible to protect the perpetrators. Anyone who went to parochial school in the 1950s knows that for a child to raise questions about the propriety of behavior by priests or nuns was almost unthinkable in the Catholic setting of that era.
Many people view the study’s results as a cesspool of excuses, though it should be reiterated that the study didn’t blame everything on the free-loving era.
What do you think? Is the Catholic church passing the buck if it accepts these charges? If you’d like to read the John Jay report for yourself, click here to download it.

IIRC priests were screened using a process devised by professors at the University of California and the American Psychiatric Association using methods based on the shoddy and often fraudulent work of a known paedophile named Alfred Kinsey. In a nutshell, if a man wouldn’t admit that he was a sexual deviant, he would be deemed “repressed” or some such nonsense and kept out. These methods prevented many good men from entering the priesthood, and encouraged the freakshows we have seen since.

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 3:41pmThe Holy Catholic Church needs to stop analyzing the problem and start fixing it, with solutions! Putting the blame on the ‘60’s Peace & Love movement just make this issue worse for The Church. Forever apologize for what those evil priests did and start coming up with ways to prevent such vile acts from ever occurring again.
On a side note, I just want to bring attention to the fact Catholic priests were not the only religious sect caught molesting children. Numerous other faiths harbor(ed) evil men who did just the same vile acts but often more “sexy” to report Catholic failures than those of any other religion in today’s media.

If it did, why then are children 100 times more lilely to be abused at a public school than a Catholic Church? It is individuals….Homosexual individuals, and the only fault with the church is trying to bury the crap in the sand…..Which is the very same thing the public schools are doing….But then they are union and we all now how that works.

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 3:18pmHmmm, I‘m thinking the main cause is that Priest’s use to be able to mary but when they died their property (which was given to them by the Church) was inherited by their wives. That was the main reason priests were not allowed to mary anymore, the church lost the property and the money. Instead of giving the property back to the church they changed the law (Catholic church) and left priests with out wives, which is not in scripture. Wonder if that was investigated in this report??

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 6:10pmYou are so full of it. The Levites, from scripture, were given over to God and were not allowed to marry. They were given a place to live by the Israelites per God’s orders. Please, go read about it in Joshua, Judges, and Kings. Priests have never been able to marry (God claimed them as his). Married men in the Eastern right are permitted to become Priests, but a Priest cannot get married. After Christ started the Church, the Apostles started recruiting Priests, most of whom were married men. But once you’re a priest, you‘re not allowed to get married if you weren’t already. That’s how it was for thousands of years. This has nothing to do with the Catholic Church “changing things because of property rights”. I’m now expected to believe that a few bad apples warrant changing the whole system? I don’t think so.

However, my folks belonged to a very counter-culture Catholic parish in the 1970s (which I remember from my childhood in the 1980s – still a weird place) and when I asked my mom about the sex abuse scandals in our diocese, she made an interesting comment. She said that in the 1970s in their parish – and in American culture – it was totally normal for the priest and the high school boys to, say, hang out in a hot tub while on a retreat or do other things that we today or folks from the 1950s or 1960s would find totally abhorrent. It was a completely different mindset. However, she also said that this did NOT excuse priests taking sexual advantage of kids and especially not the complete cover-up and abetting the Church did of it all.

Posted on May 27, 2011 at 2:36pmYes, I was around as a teen when the Woodstock thing happened — but I wasn’t one of “them”. I’ve always been the “Conservative”….even then. I agree that things did start going “downhill” morally, spiritually in this country – it was a turning point – rebellion. They forgot to mention abortion. I’m not a Catholic but I suspect that has been going on since forever — don‘t know if it increased since then or not but wouldn’t be surprised. Of course the liberals will not agree that the rebellion of the 1960′s were not good — they think just the opposite, as they do now. They think it was a great “freeiing” – free love, etc. which is good in their eyes (but not in mine). I often wondered back then if these people (hippie’s) would ever change when they got older. It’s been my general observation that the answer is – no. I see them everywhere still…my age. They were successful in finally taking over our nation for liberalism and we see the destruction (that at least half think) they have wrought. The good news is that I think we’re in the process of a “reversal” of that. Can’t prove it, but I see signs – like the Tea Party, the Consv. media, the popularity of Sarah Palin & her ilk, etc. More than half now are against abortion – used to be less. So there’s hope — keep praying.

Mithraism (pegan religion in Roman empire 1-3rd century) was an all male religion with certain rituals. It disappeared during the 4th century, but if you do a search on mithraism=christianity you can get a wealth of information. The Roman Catholic Church itself has put out it’s own rebuttal on it. Richard Rives has two books written about the mingling of holy and profane during the 3rd and 4th century. It is becoming pretty well known.

What brought the scandal to the light of day was the changing of social norms
in REPORTING the abuse to authorities and stronger laws against the behavior.
That it became a scandal, was the fault of church leadership. Period.
Now if you REALLY want to understand why, look into how Vatican II
altered the church and watered down the sacrements, as many of the
abusing “priests” were ordained post vatican II and it is questionable if they
actually recieved the indelable mark of the priesthood.
Many seminaries remain dens of iniquity.
