‘Blasphemous’ UK Film Featuring Jesus Being Seduced on the Cross Approved 23 Years After Being Banned

LONDON (The Blaze/AP) — A victory for freedom of expression? The only movie ever banned in Britain for blasphemy was finally approved for distribution Tuesday, 23 years after it was outlawed.

The experimental short film “Visions of Ecstasy” features scenes of Jesus being seduced on the cross and became a free-speech cause celebre after Britain’s film censors refused to give it a rating, a requirement for legal distribution.

The British Board of Film Classification ruled in 1989 that a fantasy scene in which the Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila sexually caresses Christ’s body could constitute blasphemous libel. The board judged that cutting out the potentially blasphemous material would shorten the 19-minute film by half, so they refused to approve it.

The movie, directed by Nigel Wingrove, became a rallying point for anti-censorship activists, and Wingrove fought the ban all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, which upheld the British decision in 1996.

Wingrove – dubbed “Britain’s answer to Hustler publisher Larry Flynt” by London’s Evening Standard newspaper – went on to found film distribution companies specializing in erotic gothic horror. He also has created artwork for the band Cradle of Filth and manages a burlesque group.

Blasphemy was abolished as an offense in 2008 and on Tuesday the film board gave Wingrove’s film an “18” rating, meaning it may be viewed by adults.

The board acknowledged the film would be “deeply offensive to some viewers,” but was unlikely to cause harm.

“In the absence of any breach of U.K. law and the lack of any credible risk of harm, as opposed to mere offensiveness, the board has no sustainable grounds on which to refuse a classification to ‘Visions Of Ecstasy’ in 2012,” it said in a statement.

Wingrove welcomed the decision and said the ban had been a setback to his career.

“It was my second self-financing film and had it not been banned I would have continued to make films, but that all got knocked sideways and had a huge impact on my career,” he said.

“I don’t believe it should have been banned in the first place. No one in the church thought it was blasphemous. Some believed it could be viewed as offensive but that it fell well short of blasphemy,” he added.

Editor’s Note: The Blaze declined to embed clips from the film due to their graphic nature.

Makes no difference now what is done in the UK. God has given the UK that which will be their demise. You know who they are. The UK’s chosen ones will take down the UK. I hope all the UK’s disgusting, PC politicians go first, because they, in my opinion, are not worth the air they breathe.

Actually…hoorah!!…this is a victory for Freedom of speech and expression…you have to be willing to defend even the most vile expression of Freedom.. ESPECIALLY if it goes against what you believe… that is Freedom…let God enforce His judgement…the first court ruling was actually the PC ruling… protecting one group from what they MIGHT feel is offensive…it should have been rated Adults Only 23 years ago…adults can make up their mind whether to see and pay or not…
and don’t be so quick to damn all of Britain to the dustbin of hell….there is a Conservative movement.. a true conservative moment in the UK just like there was under Thatcher… Cameron might not be her but he is moving in that direction…there are others too..like the British EU Rep that started the whole UK Tea Party type movement…
they are privatizing their health care system…
      putting austerity measures into place…
in fact, many of them are condemning Obama for moving the USA to a EU style country when they are trying to come towards the USA model…we should be leading them here by example instead of caving into the forces that want their model in America…

first we fix ourselves…that will fix our families..that will fix our street…which will fix our city..which will snowball to fixing our state…which will fix the Nation…which will fix the World…

we should CHEER LOUDLY that forces in the UK are moving MORE towards ALL types of freedoms we outline in the Constituti

      YAWN…another anti-Christian slop.

Come back when you are REALLY EDGY, when you make a video or “art” showing Muhammad.

Even using Islamic sources you could really paint Muhammad in a negative light…after all he as a pedophile, murderer, rapist, slave owner, liar, told his followers to lie, and flim flam man.

The “anti-Christianity” anti-Jesus stuff is soooooo yesterday. Try some REAL edgy stuff…do some anti-Islamic stuff and SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

that is if you “artists” are really about shocking and turning over the apple cart.

I’m with the guy with the reeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy long name. If this was a movie portraying Mohammed in a similar situation, then it would be news. Then there would be riots in the streets and violence everywhere by Muslims

Even, though I find this reprehensible I don’t have to do anything about it. Christians don’t have to do anything about it. Christ being the living God will deal with this type thing, hence the rod of iron reference. He is the only One that can. The moon is a rock in space. So the moon worshipers would have to extract revenge for their god being so besmirched, if it were to ever happen.

It seems that not many posters on this board remember Scorcese’s THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. Big brouhaha at its release. Is anyone railing against its blasphemy today? THE LAST TEMPTATION had fantasy sequences, too–which were deemed blasphemous. In Scorcese’s film, the apostles so resembled mafioso types. Everyone wants to appropriate Jesus as an advocate for their own value system. Let me say that there is a long history of association between Christianity and eroticism. Someone as pivotal in Western Culture as Jesus Christ, is bound to excite uncommon thoughts in the minds of creative individuals. Christians: your faith is not going to be shaken by THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, THE DA VINCI CODE, or VISIONS OF ECSTASY Keep your faith, but let the dialogue continue. Not everyone was born in a strict Christian environment..

HE HAS BECOME THE VICTIM OF HIS OWN MAKEING. WHAAA, whaaa

Literally. He made the movie and then lost his career. It couldn’t have been that bad. Either He had rich and powerful friends in the background or he himself financed the lawsuits. I am sure it is not cheap to go all the way up to the world court, which has no right to exist in the first place.

See, this is the difference between Christians and Muslims. We have no right to take this man’s life for what he did. Yet, Salman Rushdie has to hide from Muslims because he has a fatwa on his head. Jesus did not tell us to kill people like that. Mohammad did. That is probably why no one has the courage to do these things to Muslims. This man is a coward not a hero at all. He should have tried to do the same to Islam. Remember, Muhammad was a pedophile. That would have made good child porn. No?

They heaped their unholy scorn upon him and he took it all upon himself and said forgive them father for they know not what they do. They mocked him then and now! But a day comes soon that he comes in vengeance and with fury and wrath. Every knee will bend and every tongue will confess he is Lord. I can’t wait! Get ready folks…its almost show time.

Please don’t put this crap on this site. I don’t believe in censorship, but blasphemy is a sin.

They won’t…liberals are notorious cowards. The only bright side to this is that Wingrove went broke after this film and it ruined what little career he had. I think that’s God sending Wingrove a message…don’t you?

i dont support child porn, and seeing a movie be made just based around his child brides would only support it.
no i would rather see one about mohammad as he was in real life: a theif, a murderer, a thug, an illiterate, and him sitting in a cave with his buddies plotting world domination, and having someone write it all down for him. maybe show him marrying a bride or have the brides all serving him food, but i really dont want to see anything happening to a bunch of children on screen.
i could be very wrong but i think mohammad just married them young to train them to behave how he wanted them to, and waited til they hit puberty before doing anything else to them. its no different then what the rest of the world did during and even before that time period. women’s rights as we know it today is still a fairly new concept comparitavely to the rest of our history throughout the world… =/ unfortunately its not one thats widely accepted yet.
