Blaze Exclusive: Funeral for Israeli Soldier Slain by Terrorists Defines the Heavy Price of War

Editor’s note: Veteran journalist Sharona Schwartz and photographer George Lange bring us this riveting account from the Friday morning funeral of one of the victims of Thursday’s deadly attacks in southern Israel.

Shortly before Glenn and Pat sat at their microphones for Thursday’s radio broadcast (at 4pm Israel local time), we heard the horrific news coming out of Eilat: multi-pronged terrorist attack, bullets and mortars and anti-tank missiles.

The army didn’t know if the siege was over, all afternoon and into the evening terrorists continued taking shots at Israel from across the Egyptian border.

When Israel TV announced the name of the first casualty, I learned he was from Jerusalem and that his funeral would be just a 15 minute drive away. I knew I had to be there if only to feel that this war is not just an abstraction. It destroys the lives of real people.

Staff Sergeant Moshe Naftaly was killed as he was fighting the terrorists who attacked the first bus driving north from Eilat packed with civilians. The eldest of seven children from the settlement Ofra, the 22-year-old recently finished a commanders’ course in the Golani Brigade.

When she got the news, his mother Shula told reporters, “I know in my heart as a mother that Moshe fought bravely. My beloved son was dedicated and persistent in everything he did. He was an exemplary soldier who accomplished every goal he had. He did everything he could for Israel out of pure faith and belief in his actions.”

I could hear the wailing of the women as they came up the hill to the gravesite before the funeral began.

Israelis of all types came to pay their last respects: young, old, religious, secular, European Jews, Sephardic Jews and Ethiopians, his family, friends and brothers in arms, who clutched each other next to Moshe’s freshly-dug grave as they wept.

Hundreds stood by quietly as the religious service got underway, still shocked that an adult life that barely began was so mercilessly cut short.Moshe lived in Judea and Samaria – the West Bank – which was supposed to be the dangerous place, not the Red Sea resort of Eilat.

The rabbi of Ofra said Moshe was filled with “love, modesty, dedication, fear of God.”

Another rabbi said, “When someone dies of old age, the angel of death comes through the front door. For Moshe, he snuck in through the window.”
Rabbi Amos Badash from the yeshiva (seminary) where Moshe had studied said they had recently spoken about how he would continue his Torah studies after his army service. “God wanted Moshe to study at a higher and bigger yeshiva to start your Torah studies,” Badash told the graveside mourners.

And Brigadier General Rafi Peretz soberly reminded the large crowd that Moshe’s “friends are still fighting on the border with Egypt even as we bury him.”

Moshe’s five year old brother gazed up at his brother Itamar who eulogized their eldest sibling, recounting how Moshe “never told us rough things you were going through so Mom and we wouldn’t worry.”

The service concluded as three shots were fired by an honor guard, and six wreaths were laid including one by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro who wore an American and Israeli flag lapel pin.

Funerals are a difficult place to go, but I knew I needed to witness and convey to you tragedy through my eyes, and expose an integral side of life here, the defiance in the face of evil and the human recognition that life must go on.

    We owe the Jews so much. These are the people through whom the God of Creation chose to introduce Himself to mankind. Our savior was a first century Jewish rabbi. And anyone who thinks the Church has replaced the Jews in God’s great scheme of things needs to finish reading their Bible. Right now, He’s on the phone with the Church, but….He has a hold button that’s blinking. Once he pulls us, the Church, out of here, he’s back on the line with Israel and we will see great and mighty wonders like the world has never known, as Israel realizes the Chief Cornerstone fit all along.       The Jews in Israel didn‘t look at all like the Jews of Jesus Christ’s time bc these Israeli’s are Khazars from Russia!       It is sad to realize that so many so-called Christians have no awareness that Jesus was a Torah believing, Feast observing Jewish Rabbi who taught in the Synagogues and that He is sitting at the right hande of the Father in His now eternal earthly, human Jewish body and that He is about to return to planet earth to take His church home to a wedding feast for 7 years then return with us to rule and reign from JERUSALEM (the city oof God) for a thousand years.
      This will be quite a mouthfull to swallow for the “heathens” and “so called Christians”out there, but maybe some will go their Bible, check it out and learn the truth.. It’s all there.

      Absolutely right, LUV2DANCE. And God will wipe all tears from their eyes. (It’s heart-wrenching to see the youngest brother feel and witness the pain on his older brother’s face as he honors their eldest brother at the funeral.)

    It is a sad feeling to know that such a young man, was killed by ruthless terrorists. This has happened in Israel since its founding, and happens now to Americas young warriors. There can be no sense, other than the blind hate of freedom, and those that protect free lands.     My heart is broken over the loss of a mature son of God. But as the tears flow I am reassured by my Heavenly Father that Israel belongs to Him regardless what it looks like in the here and now. Make no mistake, our God will not be mocked! He protects His interests and He has a lot invested in the Jewish people.     Israel, what a beautiful land and country with beautiful people. Been there 3 times. Would like to return again and will do that by God’s graces. In case you did not know, the Palestinians live better and are treated better than in any other country in the Middle East. Israel in most cases has to fend for herself, at least that is what most of the modern day world would have you belief, but there is a God, who is actually the one and only true God, in the heavenlies, who never slumbers nor sleeps. He watches over her daily, and though all Hell should rage, and each nation on the face of the globe would turn against her, including America, she will never be defeated, but total destruction shall be wrought against her enemies.     More and more is the pity that young boys must die for the lowest of reasons. Israel is a sovereign nation. She cannot permit herself to be shelled or invaded by killers.Were it not for the Obama administration along with a devastatingly high number of Earth’s nations keeping the Israelis hands tied, they would administer a blow to her Arab enemies that would completely preclude their vile aggressive actions so i’m afraid that we are going to see many more brave young men into their graves until some strong nation joins Israel and tells the Arab countries to leash their dogs–OR ELSE!       That was a very moving funeral. I too was moved by the loss of this young Israeli soldier, and I wish only good on his family and obviously many friends. You are the righteous side for good, and standing for Israel. I will always stand for Israel. I have only love and admiration for the Jewish people.

It does not give you the excuse to jump up and down and celebrate like a vicious Palestinian street ape when a good and moral soldier is killed. You’ve never served the United States.       Maybe if the “Palestinians” would quit hiding their rocket launchers in the middle of day care centers and nursery schools, there would be a lot less women and children being killed. I only use the name“Palestinian” because it’s what they call themselves and what people recognize, but there IS no such thing as a “Palestinian” OR a Palestine, for that matter. Where are all the Muslim countries volunteering to take these poor suffering lambs in and give them homes? I’ll tell you where they are–ABSENT. The Israelis have been kinder to them than they deserve, considering all the grief they have caused by lobbing rockets over the walls.       @techengineer11 Yes, I mourn the death of Christian Arabs. I mourn how the moslems drove them out of Ramallah, and Judea and yes even Lebanon and Turkey. I mourn how they killed them and took their homes. The Christian Arabs are also infidels to the hypocritical moslems who fight for equal rights for themselves in the US but do not give them to Jews and Christians in the countries they rule. I assume that techengineer11 is a moslem because he/she can not tell the truth. I know God wants us to love all his children, but sometimes it is asking too much.       Cold War Vet, Teaparty-grammy, Shuri: Sounds like an effort to dehumanize a group of people in order to justify your lust for slaughter? If it makes you feel better I suppose but Jesus Christ said to even love your enemies so how much more should you love innocent Arab women and children that have nothing to do with the Freedom fighters in Palestine.

      Now I hate to use the word FF and I only do because that is what they consider themselves to be. It’s called walking in someone else’s shoes or putting yourselves in their situation. I’m very knowledgeable and aware of most of the history of Palestine and Israel. Even back when I was a devout devoted and zealous Christian Zionist, I understood the Palestinian argument completely; however, I chose to ignore it because of my Biblical beliefs at the time. I used the Bible in order to justify the Jews taking back that land after WW2 and I suspect others on the Blaze do as well.

      In doing that you fail to realize the actual reality of the situation and all you do is find ways to justify Jewish hegemony in the region. The bottom line is that in the long run 10 million Jews are not going to be allowed to stay in Israel without significant compromise. That’s just a fact and the sooner you realize it the better off we will all be. The other major problem is that many Christians do realize this nevertheless they choose to promote Israeli hegemony because they believe that it is facilitating the return of Christ and Arm

      Now THAT is the biggest piece of BS I’ve seen in awhile. The Palestinians lob rockets over the walls at Israel all day, every day, and the media say nothing. But you let an Israeli so much as nick the ear of a Palestinian, and the mainstream media sheeple will be gnashing their teeth and tearing their garments in anguish for the “poor suffering Palestinian”.

      Now that Obama has decided it’s fashionable to hate Jews and hate Israel, all the Kool-Aid drinkers are following after him like the sheeple they are. I can remember less than a year ago, it was considered as “politically incorrect” to be anti-semitic or to hate Jews as it was to call Obama the N-word. NOW it seems, it’s a popular national past-time, thanks to that piece of filth in the White House.       Very wise. Few Gentiles in the past century have been able to articulate the importance of racial unity. Today racial unity is considered as awful as poision unless you are Jewish. Indeed you have to give them an abundance of credit for demanding racial purity among their people. Both the Khazars and the Semites.
