Blaze Exclusive: ‘October Baby’ Star Talks About Abortion Survival & the Film‘s ’Story of Redemption’

October Baby Tackles Abortion Survival | Jason Burkey & Erwin BrothersIn December, The Blaze first reported about “October Baby,” a feature film that focuses upon the intensely controversial issue of abortion.

On Friday, the movie opened in 350 select theaters across America, offering the rare opportunity to explore a subject matter that often makes people on all sides of the debate squirm. Last week, we interviewed Jason Burkey, 29, who plays the male lead (also named “Jason”) in the film.

Before getting into Burkey’s take on the project, let‘s briefly delve into the movie’s plot and synopsis. “October Baby” recaps the story of a beautiful 19-year-old college freshman named Hannah (played by Rachel Hendrix). Despite her youth and good looks, she has always had a sense that something was missing in her life — a sense that she doesn’t really have a right to exist.

(Related: Blaze Exclusive: Pro-Life Director Discusses ‘October Baby’ — A Feature Film About Abortion Survival)

Her world is turned upside down when she finds out that she was adopted. While shocking enough on its own, this is the only beginning of her personal tale. In addition to grappling with this new-found knowledge, she also learns that she was the survivor of a failed abortion — a startling fact for the young girl to process. So, she decides to embark on a road trip with her friends in an epic journey to find her birth mother. Burkey’s character, Jason, helps her along the way.

Considering these factors, the film tackles two intriguing themes. The first one — abortion in a more general sense — is quite often an unpleasant and uncomfortable theme to contend with (which may explain why Hollywood avoids it all together). But the second factor, abortion survival, is generally uncharted territory when it comes to the big screen. In a true testament to just how unknown and uncommon exploration of the subject is, Burkey told The Blaze that, prior to filming, he had no idea the phenomenon existed.

October Baby Tackles Abortion Survival | Jason Burkey & Erwin Brothers

Actor Jason Burkey (Image Credit: IMDB.com)

“I kind of went into [filming] blind in a way. I didn’t know there was such a thing as an abortion survivor,” he explained. “I was oblivious to the stats behind abortion. It was always something I disagreed with, but I never really studied or looked into it that much until we started doing the film. It’s a lot bigger than I expected.”

Considering the political nature of an issue like abortion, many on the pro-choice side of the argument would potentially hear this and assume that the movie would be offensive to their worldview. But Burkey claims that reality is quite the opposite.

“I knew that it was a tough subject to tackle, especially in a film and one of the reasons I was drawn to it — the script was so well-written,” Burkey says. “It wasn‘t pushing an agenda and it wasn’t hitting anyone [in] the face with anything like a lot of faith-based films tend to do.”

Rather than “preaching,“ Burkey claims that ”October Baby“ relies on ”simple story-telling.” In the end, he contends that it is a story about “hope and ultimate forgiveness.” These elements, it seems, were at the heart of what Andrew Erwin, 33, and his brother Jon Erwin, 29, hoped to accomplish in directing and producing “October Baby.”

As we reported back in December, in creating the film, the Erwin brothers weren’t looking to be combative regarding their take on abortion. Instead, they sought to tell a story about forgiveness, redemption and the value of life. In our discussion about the movie, Andrew boiled its main premise down to three words: “It’s about forgiveness.”

While women have abortions for a multitude of reasons, Andrew says he believes in “forgiveness and healing” and that he and his brother wanted to pass this sentiment onto their audience. “It’s not about throwing stones. [Women who have had abortions] don’t have to live in shame,” he says. The brothers were intent on telling the story through “positivity and love, not hate.”

Burkey echos these sentiments.

“I think the Erwins’ goal here was…they’re filmmakers, they’re story-tellers. They just wanted to tell a good story of redemption,” he explains. “They were challenged [by God] to make this. I think their hope for it was to spark conversation…to bring healing.”

And it is healing, Burkey alleges, that the film is bringing about. He says that people have approached the cast and crew at screenings to share personal stories about how abortion has impacted their lives.

There have been more babies survive botched abortions than people ever imagine. They used to be quietly cared for and adopted out. Now, they are left in a splash pan, left in a closet or bathroom until they die. This is information provided by Nurses who used to work at Planned Parenthood until they could not tolerate it anymore. Believe me or not.

“a subject matter that often makes people on all sides of the debate squirm” Really? I really don’t get this statement? What is there to squirm about if you are against murdering babies in the womb? I think only one side should be squirming and I pray that the scales will fall from their eyes and they will see abortion for what it is, sadistic, cold blooded, premeditated murder. If I was a veterinarian who offered to rip little baby kittens or puppies to pieces and suck the body parts out with a vacuum tube so that the owners of the cat or dog would not be “punished with the babies” the majority of the Left would come unhinged at this “despicable act of animal cruelty” this despicable act of human cruelty occurs day in and day out and it doesn’t make anyone squirm. Lord have mercy.

Ah. Secrets. It is so sad. Forty-seven years ago I gave my infant son up to a closed adoption. My loss rends my heart to this day, but my choice was right. I can only hope and pray he is OK and happy. And, that he is able to live peacefully with the loss that I gave him.
Sometimes young girls have unprotected sex for very deep psychological reasons, responding to a great loss of their own. We all must be forgiving.

“Sometimes young girls have unprotected sex for very deep psychological reasons, responding to a great loss of their own. We all must be forgiving.”
And sometimes, they have unprotected sex for very BAD reasons–like, for example, the conservative policies (and I say conservative, because any Leftist deserving to be so-called wouldn’t waste their time ACTIVELY limiting access to contraception) in their locality that prevent them from easily obtaining cheap abortion, perhaps combined with their own personal financial and familial situation and BAM–contraception is no longer a feasible and pragmatic option…which is, of course, exactly what conservatives want; to force a choice between “their way or the highway”–abstinence (because’s its all you can get and/or afford) or unwanted pregnancies and venereal diseases. Those are the choice conservatives want to give you. I know, it sounds and looks really really stupid to make that your GOAL to create a less than optimal set of choice to choose from, but if you understand the belief systems that most of these people are operating off of, then this kind of policy starts to become…comprehensible if not any more justifiable.

@ Judy–May God bless you. I too gave my infant daughter up for adoption and I know first hand of the pain and the shame and the guilt associated with being the birthmom–yet we gave all, we did what was right and best for our child. We loved them and we selflessly gave them life and a life. My story came full circle as I was reunited with my daughter five years ago…30 years after giving birth. God does answer prayer. It may take 30 years (maybe not, maybe more, maybe less) but He does answer prayer and His timing is perfect. Keep praying and having faith and trusting in God. His Love is unfailing, He is faithful, He sees you, and He loves you and your son.

How bout the choice to keep your legs closed until your married and you want a baby? Oh…I know that is so silly in these “Progressive times” because people are so wise and sophisticated now.
Ya know, you don’t “have” to have sex. It’s not like you will die or something…sometimes delayed gratification is a good thing. The young generation (everyone for that matter) could use a lesson on it.

46 years ago, my mother (unknown by me to this day) gave her baby boy (me) up for adoption for whatever reason. I don’t really care why, I am just thankful that I wasn’t aborted instead. I am happy, healthy and successful. If I ever meet her, all I would do is hug her and thank her for giving me a chance, maybe one that she wasn’t able to offer at the time. The gift of life is the most precious thing that anyone can offer, and in my opinion, taking it away the most evil. .

I am a woman and feel that the ONLY choice a woman has is to NOT get pregnant. If she is pregnant and doesn‘t want her baby because it’s INCONVEINENT for her, then she can either give it up for adoption or do her own abortion! Why should she legally be allowed to involve another human being (the doctor) to do her “dirty work”? If she wants to take the chance of doing her own abortion and dies, so be it–what makes her life any more important than the life of her baby? For those of you who use the tired excuse of: “What about rape or incest?” That only accounts for less the 1% of all abortions, the rest are all done for “conveinence”. You will NOT get away with anything in this life that’s morally wrong and will one day have to pay……

Here’s the thing, ANY abortion survivor will OF COURSE say that they are glad they weren’t aborted and that they are alive (otherwise, I assume they would have already killed themselves)–but hindsight is 20/20. And looking back to the period in their life in which an abortion would have been/was attempted, it would be impossible to have predicted precisely the kind of person and the kind of life that the individual would have, or indeed if they even WOULD have survived or become the same person, rather than someone entirely different (or died prior to now for unrelated reasons). My point is that we can’t predict the future, so making arguments for, or against, abortion on the basis of “what could be” or “what could have been” is ridiculous because we don’t KNOW what could be or could have been–we may have an idea, but its a “scientific wild-ass guess” at best. We can’t KNOW a potential person, not yet conscious, will have a life that is desirable to them, because we cannot know what a person would want for themselves BEFORE THEY EXIST–that is a judgment ONLY they can make for themselves, and thus not a judgment than can be made at all in the absence, hitherto, of a self to judge.

OF COURSE, now that I have been born and accustomed to life, I would prefer NOT to have been aborted (generally), but I couldn’t have POSSIBLY known life was going to turn out the way it did, nor could I have known enough to make a judgment of its desirability then.

Since no one knows what the future holds, we should just kill everyone. They won’t know what they are missing once they are dead.

It’s about probability. There is a higher probability of a person having a normal life than not. That’s the basis of the argument you ignorantly stand against.

There are laws on the books in some states that forbid a nurse or doctor from giving any assistance to a baby that survived the abortion process. The are laid on a cold metal table and the medical personnel just have to leave them alone until they die.
I remember last year in one of the north east states this law was focused on because a nurse had saved an “abortion ” baby and was being punished for it.

There are a lot of women that don’t want to be a mother. Killing babies is not the way to avoid that. My mother would have gotten an abortion had it been legal back then. I have always felt like a failed abortion. I place that on my mother. I am grateful for life and have adopted because I believe every child deserves loving parents.

      Kindling,

Perhaps, the only reason your birth mother had you was so that your adopted mother could raise you. I can not have any more children (health reasons), but desperately wish for another baby. I would love to raise a child that another woman might not want. Adoption is allowing women who can’t be mothers to become so- it’s an amazing gift. Don’t think of yourself as “a failed abortion,” think of yourself as a precious gift. :-)

This is not an uncommon practice for “small films”. They send copies to various states, various cities. If it does well it goes general, if not, it goes to HBO or other network.

Within the next generation or two they will no longer have the numbers to keep Roe v Wade on the books. We pro life people will have at least 3 votes to their 1 vote. I think there is a lot being said in this movie…like, every life is of value..it is too easy to just say “get rid of it”..you should be shown an ultrasound of the baby before you make your decision..What does it hurt..you don’t know the effects an abortion will have on your psyche until after it is over and too late. Why not pick the photo up, look at it..take 24hrs. and then make the decision. The only reason progressives don’t want you to do that, is that you might decide against abortion..and for adoption!! Ask yourself why planned parenthood is so dead set against this practice of ultrasound. It is easy to take one day, and think about it. If it saves only one baby…it will be well worth it. Suppose that child grows up to do something awesome and inspiring. You won’t know…you will never know…just take the time, for the sake of your emotional well being, and for the life of your unborn child…because in the end, when you break it all down, take all the b s out of it…it is a baby…a human being. Please take the time!!! thank you for listening.

How dare you make such a mean spirited comment. Where in the world did you come up with such an evil notion that abortion was to control blacks and white trash?

Hillary Clinton’s hero Margaret Sanger founded planned parenthood. I will put some of this sweet loving lady’s quotes below for you.

“We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with
social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most
successful educational approach to the ***** is through a religious appeal.
We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the *****
population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if
it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.”

“Give dysgenic groups [people with 'bad genes'] in our population
their choice of segregation or [compulsory] sterilization.”

“Eugenic sterilization is an urgent need … We must prevent
      Multiplication of this bad stock.”

“[Our objective is] unlimited sexual gratification without the burden
of unwanted children … [Women must have the right] to live … to love
… to be lazy … to be an unmarried mother … to create … to destroy
… The marriage bed is the most degenerative influence in the social order
… The most merciful thing that a family does to one of its infant members
      is to kill it.”

I have tried it elsewhere for completely innocent purposes as it is SIMPLY an ethnic classification, as is Caucasian, and it ***** out there too. Seems ridiculous. As part of my pressing back against the machine, whenver I am asked for my “race” I always reply Euro-American. That’s as much a race as any other type of – American.

Think about it. Maybe a future president or congressman(woman) was aborted. Maybe the next Einstein or Edison was aborted. Maybe the next Ford or Gates was aborted. THINK ABOUT IT. How much have we possibly shortchanged our children’s futures by possibly killing the visionaries and inventors of the next generation? I know about the whole choice argument, but tell me where would we be if Henry Ford was aborted? Where would we be if Gen. Patton was aborted? Where would we be if Bill Gates was aborted? Think about where your family would be if you weren’t given a chance at life. Until we decide every human life deserves a chance we possibly ruin the chances Americas as a whole has.

In reply to your comment (which has nothing to do with this story or abortion): We’re constantly told here in this country how great it is that anybody can be president; like that is supposed to be the goal or something. We have these young ones in our schools that we’re teaching there is nothing more nobler than going into public service (i.e., the public sector–working for the gubmint or becoming a politician). That is a major part of the sickness this society breeds, and I can smell it from a mile away. In deference to the style of Thomas Jefferson’s governance and politics, such as the way he didn’t even include amongst his achievements on his tombstone that he was the third president of these United States; nor would he have ever approved of having his face on a mountainside like they did at disgraceful “human-deifying” Mt. Rushmore–why do we teach our kids this way? We have fallen prey to cult of personality in the “imperial” presidency. We need to be teaching our children that it is honorable to become a major CEO in that filthy “greedy” private sector. We need to show them the great achivements of our so-called “robber barons” (who never robbed anybody) from the Gilded Age; men like Andrew Carnegie, not progressives like Teddy Roosevelt (who by the way is deified on Mt. Rushmore). Is it any wonder why the powers of the executive office have grown and grown and grown, to the point that we will soon have a dictator, versus a president? Tell me if I’m wron

I understand your thought process about the possibility of the next great “whatever” potentially being aborted out of existence. But don’t forget to consider the flip side to that. There is also the potential for the next Charles Manson, Josef Mengele, Bruce Ivins (the dude who was likely responsible for the 2001 anthrax mailings) or Adolph Hitler or Jeffrey Dahmer to be snuffed out as well and who is really going to argue that that would be a bad thing. And no, I’m not suggesting abortion is a good thing, just countering your thoughts with something that popped into my head when I read your argument. I would indeed be a tragedy if the person capable of curing cancer or AIDS or whatever was lost before they had a chance to begin but it would be an equally glorious one if the next serial killer or murderous dictator never came to be either. So I just can’t get behind THAT particular argument when it comes to the debate about abortion.

God bless them in their search to bring light to a dark place. I have never heard a woman who had an abortion not speak of regret. They may be out there, but that’s my experience.

I agree. I had one when I was young and not yet born-again. I didn’t realize what I was really doing. I had to grieve, repent and recover when I finally realized and it took awhile to do all that. I definately regret doing it.
