Blaze Scrutiny of NPR Expose Videos Draws Extensive Media Reaction

We first posted an in-depth look at the NPR sting video on Thursday, when our Scott Baker and Pam Key asked whether the raw video revealed questionable editing tactics. Then Thursday evening, Key posted a six-minute montage showing enlightening sections cut from the now-infamous, edited video.

Our videos — sometimes referenced together, sometimes not — have been getting some viral attention. A good number of news and journalism sites have been referencing our analysis as they debate the ethics of the NPR video and the role and parameters of undercover journalism.

Business Insider writer Glynnis MacNicol noticed our “investigation is drawing applause from some unlikely quarters.”

Take the New York Times, for example. On Friday evening, Times writer Peter Catapano posted a lengthy piece aggregating the best commentary regarding the undercover video, and featuring diverging views regarding its ethics. It seems the article was incomplete without mentioning our piece:

As several readers have pointed out, Pam Key, a producer at Glenn Beck’s Web site, The Blaze, examines unedited video to determine whether the version that O’Keefe released was edited deceptively.

About an hour later, NYT editor Patrick LaForge tweeted the following:

Blaze Scrutiny of NPR Expose Videos Draws Extensive Media Reaction

Palafo seems to hint at one of the most common reactions: bewilderment over why, out of all the sites out there, we were one of the only ones to take the time to comb through the video and ask tough questions.

“It‘s either depressing or sort of wonderful that Glenn Beck’s The Blaze was the one to catch some really serious, dishonest lily-gilding in the NPR sting,” Politico’s Ben Smith writes on his blog from Friday, adding a mild mea culpa: “I regret having, even in what I thought was a cautious way, picked up the story.”

Mediaite’s Jon Bershad expressed his astonishment as “interesting” [emphasis added]:

While the content of the article is certainly interesting enough, the fact that The Blaze wrote it up is even more interesting. Who would have guessed when Glenn Beck announced that he was starting a news site, that that site would be the only ones to spend this much time in the defense of an NPR executive? Sure, any site that seems to have a set ideology may have a couple posts with a differing opinion and, yes, James O’Keefe isn’t exactly an untouchable figure in Conservative politics, but the clear amount of effort that The Blaze obviously expended on this project sets it apart. [...]

TIME Magazine’s James Poniewozik gave The Blaze “kudos” for taking the time to focus on the raw video while Mother Jones Editor — yes, Mother Jones — Clara Jeffery sent her compliments out via the Twittersphere:

Blaze Scrutiny of NPR Expose Videos Draws Extensive Media Reaction

Columbia Journalism Review writer Joel Meares looked at the merits of our pieces: “It gets to the point about taking caution with these kinds of videos…,” he wrote after mentioning some of the edits we questioned, adding, “A surprising analysis from a surprising source. Well done, Blaze:”

Blaze Scrutiny of NPR Expose Videos Draws Extensive Media Reaction

Then there’s NPR.

Meares spent time with NPR’s ombudsman — its in-house critic — Alicia Shepard on Friday. Shepard has been justifiably quite critical of the undercover video central figure, now-former NPR fundraising executive Ron Schiller. She found our article to be “a good piece of reporting [she] had happened upon this week” (Meares’s words). On Friday night, Shepard let her Twitter followers know it:

Blaze Scrutiny of NPR Expose Videos Draws Extensive Media Reaction

She also appeared on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday to talk about the issues we raised:

Others at NPR have noticed, too. For example, news blogger Mark Memmott devoted an entire post on NPR‘s website to our O’Keefe analysis. He, wisely, did not see our analysis as a basis for trying to exonerate Schiller.

“As NPR’s David Folkenflik says on Weekend Edition Sunday, conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck‘s website The Blaze has done some judging and concluded that O’Keefe did make some misleading edits,” he says in a Sunday article.

But the most important sentence in Memmott’s piece may be this: “O‘Keefe’s edits do not entirely wipe away the nature of some things Schiller said.”

(An NPR “All Things Considered” interview to air Monday will feature Baker discussing this issue.)

And that may be the best way to summarize our analysis and the reaction to it. The editing and emphasis in the expose deserve scrutiny. But there were also plenty of seemingly indefensible things said in the video. The Poynter Institute’s Steve Myers says, “The Blaze story identifies several important differences that color viewers’ perception of what happened.” But Myers — as with our post — does not see flaws in the O’Keefe video as reason to wipe the slate clean for the NPR executives involved.

I would be nice if you folks would pull your heads out of Beck’s ass. He isn’t the one posting articles here. The credit for this story belongs with Pam Key, who has done this for a long time and has long worked with Scott Baker who is a partner in this site. I appreciate what Glenn does, but give credit where it is due.

You‘d think after the Shirley Sherrod episode that some people would have gotten the hint that Glenn isn’t just an opportunist or “crazy”.

They blamed him for that anyway. Now this.

It won’t be very long before they start having to walk back all the accusations of Beck being a racist, an “Islamophobe”, an “hate monger” and every other nasty thing that they have called the guy since he moved over to Fox.

They won’t walk them back, they will just pretend they didn’t happen in combination with we were reporting the facts we had at the time……Walking things back shows respect,I do not believe they are quite there yet.
This is one skirmish the truth won. The outcome didn’t change, I think that may be the most important point (for me anyways) because literally these people are still reprehensible. The Blaze got the big ugly serial killer a fair trial, he still gets the death penalty, but the trial was sound. Just my humble opinion.

What’s amazing is that almost NO ONE does their full homework in the MSM. They sit around and pontificate, and angle, and spin whatever modicum of facts (or non facts) they may have at their disposal. They look at most things through their skewed lens and templates. They are so about themselves and their narrow views and their place in the heirarchy. And here, The Blaze did the hard work by combing through the video and provided a factual and contextual analysis. This is what used to be called journalism (and research) Congrats to the Blaze, but at the same time it just highlights what we already knew about the MSM.

And congrats to Glenn even though at this point I’m sure he could care less about MSM praise.

It’s been so long since those in the MSM have done what The Blaze did, i.e. what used to be s.o.p. otherwise known as their job, it now astounds them when someone does. You can almost hear them in their conference rooms: “Wow, I didn’t think anybody did that any more.”

That said, I’d like to see The Blaze go back and comb through the full audio of the “because we have power” guy because I still find the excerpt being exploited on that to be out of context and misleading.

Non-sense!! Blazes’ 8 points about the video was total non-sense.
Each one of the editing issues were pointless. Either the item didn’t alter the outcome or was a mere camera glitch ,(deemed tricky by your resident “expert” who has only illustrated childrens books)

Blaze is trying to build a name for itself with the left and I suggest it’s for their own benefit not their readers

As Glenn Beck says – “The Truth has no agenda”. I’d like to add that it also has nothing to do with politics. NPR rejects ANYTHING that isn’t politically correct in their far-left cocoon, and that is the number one reason why they shouldn’t be publicly funded.

Really, why should anyone who doesn’t agree with their far-left politics, have their tax dollars supporting them? Let those who support their views support them.

One concern I have always had with Glenn is his pandering to liberals. Of course the liberal media will give his site credit for critical reporting of other conservatives. They love when we cut each other down. I don’t buy into his “we’re all Americans” mumbo jumbo. If you’re a liberal, then you don’t respect the Constitution. Period. He‘s always trying to create a moral equivalence between left and right when it’s right that is on the side of freedom and our Constitution and it’s the left that is constantly trying to destroy both.

Fine, seek out the truth, that’s great. But in the end, what is The Blaze really telling us? Did they do their expose of O’Keefe to show us that NPR is NOT heavily biased to the left? Does anything change if the video was edited? The guy still called tea partiers racists, did he not? So I have to ask, why waste the time determining how the video was edited when it’s clear as day what the guy from NPR said? Why stick your neck out to cut down a conservative journalist when it doesn’t change the story, which is the utter leftist bias of NPR?

Because, like Glenn said on air today-O’Keefe should be held to honest standards even if he is on “our side”. His questionable editing puts a shadow over EVERY video taken by a “conservative” whether they edit things out or not. If we don‘t hold our OWN side’s feet to the fire, we are hypocrite’s if we demand that the OTHER side does. Sinking to their level would make the BLAZE heavily biased to THE RIGHT.

i remember reading it last week thinking “man, this is really good”. i think the thing is, most people would expect beck to be one-sided on it, and jump to defend okeefe, or promote his videos (like hannity)… anyway, it was nice to see such thoughtful analysis, it shows that right wingers aren’t blind supporters. way to go blaze.

I’ll give credit where credit is due, and the Blaze did a great job on this one.

But when you’re all finished patting yourselves on the back, go to the “search” field at the top of the page and type in “NPR video.” The Blaze did 10 or 15, stories on the video, mostly uncritical of the video. More interesting are the posts, one of which gushed, “Thank you James! You are my hero.”

This guy shouldn‘t be anyone’s hero. Remember his failed attempt to get a CNN reporter on his “love boat” with all the sex toys? Pretty easy to imagine how he would edit the video of the “dumb blond” (his description) and ruined her career. The guy is nothing more than a sleaze, who is funded by equally sleazy people.

On the one hand, I am surprised that no other organization looked deeper into this. But on the other hand, not so much. O’Keefe has absolutely zero credibility. He’s not a hero and not a journalist. He is a convicted criminal.

Now if only they’d stop censoring people blogging on their site and start putting real guests with opposing points of view on the show, perhaps they’d regain the half of their viewership that quit watching Beck early last year…

Come on, you’re surprised that the lamestream media finally agrees with The Blaze and Beck? Get real. It is only because what was reported coincides with the lefty viewpoint and makes it look like the conservatives were at fault in the NPR scandal. Of course, those on the left would gladly praise anyone that bashes the right. Wish the lamestream media would be more willing to bash their own lies, but that would mean taking their heads out of the sand.

“Who would have guessed when Glenn Beck announced that he was starting a news site, that that site would be the only ones to spend this much time in the defense of an NPR executive?”

It is not defense of the NPR executive. It is defense of the truth.

Glenn fully understands that credibility is everything. And now, because of this, more people will give more credibility to everything Beck has exposed in the past, and will continue to expose. GO BECK! The force is with you!

Who exactly is funding him? Do you have receipts? He told Hannity last week that this latest expose’ went on his personal credit card and he asked for legal advice/help from anyone who would like to get involved. Doesn‘t sound like he’s got ANY funding at all, but since you have more credibility than he does, I’ll look for your report on who is funding him. (After all that patting yourself on the back I can hardly wait.)

O’ Keefe is a kid. A zealous, driven, activist kid. His actions aren’t always wise, or well thought out. Hopefully he’ll outgrow that as he matures. Don’t we all? But his videos expose the truth (and he should leave them alone editing wise) and he’s putting himself at great legal risk doing what he does. No one with a brain sees him as a journalist. He’s also not my hero. But he IS doing what no one else can or WILL do, and I am grateful for his efforts.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/does-raw-video-of-npr-expose-reveal-questionable-editing-tactics/ The surprise comes from willingness for a Blaze editor to NOT gloss over the obvious “tactic” of creative editing to paint a picture. O’Keefe and Breitbart have shown their cards. Kudos to Scott for being willing to call this out.

Too bad they didn’t seek the truth on the edited acorn video, or the edited planned parenthood video, or the edited Shirley Sharrod video. BTW I noticed it wasn’t Glenn who sussed this out but his replacement. Oh well I‘m sure the next video that James O’keefe makes will undergo the same scrutiny that this one did. Good job Blaze, maybe there is hope for you yet. Some of the people here not so much.
