Blogger Dismantles Fox-Viewers-Are-Misinformed Study

Remember that study from the University of Maryland and WorldPublicOpinion.org saying Fox News viewers are the most “misinformed” audience? It seems that was misinformation.

Competitive Enterprise Institute Communications Director, and licensed lawyer, Lee Doren has just released a short video expose showing that the study is severely flawed.

“After looking at the supposed ‘myths’ that Fox News watchers believe, I quickly realized that something was wrong with the study,” Doren writes in the video’s YouTube introduction. “As a result, I read the study very carefully and realized that the whole study was bogus.”

He says the study does “not have data to support its conclusions,“ and goes as far as to say it ”may simply demonstrate that Fox News viewers are more informed than the researchers.”

And just in case Doren‘s video isn’t enough, it’s important to note (as we did in our original piece) that the WorldPublicOpinion.org website includes the Tides Foundation as one of its major sponsors. That group is directly connected to George Soros.

The study was also debunked by columnist David Zurawik of the Baltimore Sun. As he points out, the study admits in its own pages that the term “misinformed” is relative:

Here is the big, fat wonking problem with the survey: How do you define “misinformed” and “informed”?

The researchers seemed to understand this, and to their credit, they acknowledge it at the top of their findings. Bu they choose to deal with it only in what they term a “note.”

Here is the key passage of their note: “A study of misinformation raises the somewhat delicate question of what is true….In the course of this study, to identify “misinformation” among voters, we used as reference points the conclusions of key government agencies that are run by professional experts and have a strong reputation for being immune to partisan influences….”

Deciding which experts and/or agencies do or don’t have a “strong reputation for being immune to partisan influences” seems like a highly subjective business to me — as talk of reputation always is.

And when you cut through such non-scientific talk, what you have for the definition of a respondent who is considered “informed” is essentially someone who agrees with the conclusions of experts in government agencies. When specific questions in the survey are framed around facts, like who was president when a certain piece of legislation passed, you can say someone is misinformed. But that is not always the case. And that is where one problem resides.

So, presumably, if you were to disagree with such top economic experts in government as Timothy Geithner or Larry Summers, you would be labeled as misinformed. If you dared to disagree with those experts in government who say that the Wall Street bailout was absolutely necessary and that the takeover of GM was desperately needed and that healthcare reform will actually be good for the economy — you would be labeled as MISINFORMED.

Fox’s original response to the study was to make fun of the school by pointing out that “the latest Princeton Review ranked the University of Maryland among the top schools for having ‘Students Who Study The Least’ and being the ‘Best Party School.’”

Considering what’s been uncovered, they may want to hit back with something much harder.

This so-called study is just more leftist propaganda. The left is losing the battle of public opinion in a very big way. They desperately need to control the narrative, ergo yet another attack on Fox. The loons cannot succeed where they cannot control the free flow of ideas. To the hard left, Fox (and all conservative media, including talk radio) represent a clear threat that must be silenced. This all plays into their desire to mute conservative media through government intervention. Looky y’all, they’re misinforming the public! The FCC must regulate!

Great rebuttal! I applaud Lee Doren for all the work he did in analyzing this fatally flawed study. I just added Doren’s website to my favorites.

George Soros got caught yet again! I just goes to show that he’ll do anything to discredit the people who watch FOX News.

Of course, whenever have any of the Progressives (progressing us beyond the U.S. Constitution that is) had any faith in the American people? All they want to do is control us, take our money and redistribute it, and feed us back some of the scraps.

My guess is that they thought noone would analyze this fatally flawed study. Well, someone did! I applaud him.

One more thought. Many many more liberals read and watch Fox News than will admit. If they didn‘t they wouldn’t be commenting here and wouldn’t be replying in the media about Fox News… news. The liberals come here for the TRUTH and the ACCURACY in critical information. Most liberals are “Closet Fox News” followers.

There is nothing wrong with considering both sides of an argument before forming an opinion. Any student is required to do it when submitting a research project; you must find peer-reviewed scientific data on the topic, cover multiple sides of an argument with evidence to support each claim, and only after you have completed that may you provide a subjective viewpoint. There are pros and cons to BOTH sides of the isle folks; deciding one way or another does not make you a bad person. MOST common people–liberal or conservative–are well-intentioned people who would help a fellow man in need regardless of their personal ideology. Stop the hate-mongering please. Anyone who would encite hate towards another American only has an agenda to deeped the divide and render our democracy powerless.

That’s essentially my take on it as well. This is nothing more than spoiled children calling names on the playground when they are confronted by adults. There is no need to lend any credence to the irrational and juvenile antics of children.

When ‘studies’ come out sneering at us that we’re all (stupid/ignorant/foolish/misinformed/uneducated/hillbillies/rednecks/racists/homophobes/etc) the best thing we can do is ignore the “study” and continue on with the task of getting Leviathan dismantled. There is work to do, and we can entertain ourselves with these types of articles, reading them in retrospect, after we’ve tackled the problems at hand.

What I would love to see is a study/investigative reporting on how many assaults against gays in Europe are committed by Muslims. I’d love to know the percentage there (I read it’s quite high, but can’t offer numbers).

Of course we know no such study will happen any time soon. Too many notions might be exploded, and the Left can’t handle that.

I‘d like seeing an MSM ’study’ of what abortion does to women after the fact; how does that affect them? What are the suicide rates, for example? And infertility.

In my experience, Leftists absolutely need to be right all the time. I think it’s pathological. To me, that explains how liberals (I flatly refuse to call them Progressives) can accept and even defend conflicting logic and experience among themselves. It’s for-the-moment among them. Conservatives have a base (religious or not): the Constitution and among religious types like me, also the Bible. Liberals have no such solid base in which to believe, no genuine core I can find.

No wonder they rely on flippant things like polls. The electorate is forever and always fickle.

Studies and polls as news–how important is that compared to real events going on around the world that get no mention? It’s inevitable that when something silly is reported, something that really matters (to truly inform the people) has to be ignored.

The MSM knows most readers look only at headlines before turning to the sports or funnies pages, and to TV listings to ‘plan’ their night’s viewing. Kinda makes me wonder who is truly misinformed in America.

The facts are, the vast majority of the media has an extreme liberal bias. Thus can not be trusted and is not a reliable source of information. Anyone who calls CNN, CBS, ABC or NBC a news organization isn’t smart enough to have an opinion worth listening to. Conversely anyone who watches Fox knows that the reporting arm is straight down the middle. They tend to present the facts without bias. On the opinion side of things Fox has both conservative AND liberal opinion. The problem with liberals is that nothing they believe makes any sense in the real world and they aren’t smart enough to realize it. Just by the very fact that a person believes in liberalism, means they are not quite the brightest bulb in the bunch. Liberalism = Profound Ignorance! In all of human history, liberalism has never worked and will never work. It has only brought pain, suffering and enslavement to the poor. Liberalism in the form of socialism is responsible for the mass murders of millions of humans. So anytime someone proudly proclaims to be a liberal, I think to myself, you monster.

Or better yet a choke chain with not breathing space provided to hang these progressive bastards for the weasels they actually are.

It is obvious that the most misinformed viewers are the Obama’s supporters. They are happy to watch Obama take the country (including themselves) straight down the crapper and they like to watch liberal news outlets. There is no point in debating this because it is sooooo obvious.

Progressives and their cronies only understand two types of questions:

      1. Those they wish to hear the answers for and have arranged the answers to ahead of time.
      2. Those of the uninformed, unwashed, unlearmed masses they seek to rule.

That’s okay, “sticks and stones may break our bones but words will never hurt us”. We, as FOX viewers and Blaze bloggers, know we are more correctly informed than viewers of the other news outlets. That study made no sense at all when it was reported.

      *****

      It’s TWENTY-ONE minutes long!!!

What did I miss then? I did just hit the play button, 44 seconds into it he’s making my point his own self saying “I analyzed the actual study to learn how the researchers determined the CORRECT ANSWERS to the questions …”

As I pointed out, many of the questions asked were of OPINION in nature — to say Fox viewes are misinformed because many do not buy into the left-economists’ notion that the stimulus created jobs is not something of a factual inquiry. Some economists say it did, some say it did not, to my knowledge there is no empirical evidence to support Obama and the Dems’ claim on millions of jobs created and/or saved, therefore those questions and their results all may be tossed. There are several others in the questionnaire that fall into the same category.

Did the blogger lay this out at some point in those twenty-one minutes? If so, I’ll concede your point …and admit this isn‘t the first time I’ve not bothered to click on a video that went with a story — it’s just too annoying to hear four words and sit there looking at the dots circle for two minutes, four words, dots circle, etc.

To the point of being misinformed, I know very few people that rely on one, and only one, news source. This is so-called news making news. Will this change anyone’s viewing habits? Will it cause the administration to be more or less trusted by any particular individual? Does this affect my life, or my families life in any way? Nope……………. next.

So the counter-argument offered by Fox News supporters is that whether they are misinformed depends on what your definition of “is” is…

To argue that the following misconceptions are not really misconceptions because you can have a legitimately different opinion on them, since who is really to say who an expert is… This is to ignore facts and confuse them with opinions.

Look at the following conclusions of the original study:

      - Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 times more likely)

But the FACTS are that more than 97% of scientists who have published on climate change–the very people who are recognized within the scientific community as experts in the field–have written in public forums that they believe that climate change is occurring, that man is the cause and that the risks are significant. These are FACTS that are not known by Fox News viewers, and no amount of spinning by Fox News apologists, that try to redefine who the “right” experts are can detract from these facts. Heck, the editors at Fox News have written emails telling news people at the network to even call into question the temperature record showing that 2010 was one of the three hottest years on record, as though our temperature record is a matter of opinion. This is beyond dishonest. It is insanity. And no sane person can defend this, much less lend it respectability.

      - Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 times more likely)

The CBO is the non-partisan arbiter of all budgetary matters and has been for a long time. Its experts are drawn from the Fed, from banks and from academia. They are a mix of Republicans and Democrats who are not selected for political reasons but for their recognized economic expertise. Their methods of calculation are public and well known. To argue that their authorative conclusions are merely opinions that can be easily dismissed is to argue that the New England Journal of Medicine and Sports Illustrated are equally authorative on the subject of medicine and health science. Again, this is a silly argument relied upon by the craven apologists of Fox News rather than by knowledgeable people. While economics is not as exact a science as climate science, it is nonetheless a discipline with known experts whose opinions matter more than laypeople. Because the CBO stated that the health care legislation is budget neutral, critics of that legislation ought to know this fact before making budget-busting claims that are not factually correct.

      - That it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 times more likely)

This is the clearest proof that Fox News viewers do not know the facts. There is factual evidence, including birth records on microfiche located in libraries in Hawaii that have established proof that Obama was born in that state. The courts have repeatedly thrown out cases brought by birthers claiming that Obama is foreign-born. These decisions, made under summary judgment, are based upon that fact and that proof. Yet Fox News viewers believe something that isn’t true since that network continues to profit in the ratings from partisan misstatements that misinform their viewers but let them remain attached to beliefs that fit their ideology even as they fail to comport to reality. This is ignorance or worse. But ignorance, as they say is bliss…and a ratings boon to the most profitable (but least truthful) cable news network.

In light of what we see here, is there any good reason why the Old Republican Party allows itself to be constantly and easily duped by liberalism such as displayed by this . . . And that this is simply typical behavior of “progressives,” of liberalism; of how it operates and how it has been operating.

But can we answer that question? It’s a simple question . . . Is it not? Many of us here know what liberals and liberalism does and how it operates. Why doesn’t the Old Republican Party in the least bit mirror our sentiments and our depth of loathing for how liberals regard us and treat us? Why after so much time do they fail to see what we see, and then appropriately react to it? Or worse, do they see it? And then, who are these quiet enablers of liberalism? What are their names?

Our beliefs are grounded in the singularity of truths. Our lives are based upon there being only one singular truth to the occurrence and existence of all things traced back to an origin and a moment of impact, of creation, in thoughts, physical phenomena and motion. There are no ambiguous explanations of life and living such as liberalism constantly puts forward with the twisting of words and alternate realities that it chooses to use. Simply, there‘s truth and then there isn’t; and what isn’t truth is corruption. So why is it so hard for the Old Republican Party to protect us from the deceit that constantly aims so dangerously close to destroying us as a culture and as a civilization?

Rounding into the new year then, the rise of a New Republican Party, will we take this all seriously and put forth the effort to hold higher men and women accountable . . . to make examples of those that fail in their duties to us? Consider the Old Republican Party, that if you had them in a trench with you and when you turned to look if they were alive still because they were doing nothing to assist you, you found their weapon was pointed away; they were complacently waiting for the enemy to overrun your position. What are you charged to do, morally and ethically, and to the integrity of yourself and to your survival? Do you view them as an enemy at that moment, or someone in search of their own peace?

New Republican Party, should you waver in your convictions over your duty to our country and to our people, know that we’re counting on you as our only hope of taking the lunatics and their ideas out; those that are not good and clear in their heads and in their intentions. And then, consider that you are being shown these things so that you know beyond the infamous “polling data” that you are justified in taking firm and deliberate actions unlike your predecessors that when all the simple means have been exhausted they merely lay their weapons down to reconcile in lieu of taking a stand and then finding a way. Can you can be confident to know that our quests for an environment of integrity authorizes you to employ whatever legal means available to expedite us out of our current situation and for as long as it may take?

Or is it you too, New Republicans, that will turn your weapon against your fellow man simply by complacently surrendering it, pointing it away in hopes that you will be allowed to live while we perish fighting for what we believe in?

ABC…if you can read this through the drool on your screen, take note that:

      - all manner of climate experts have questioned man-made global warming. Because you are of the opinion that it exists does not make it so. Your argument is foolish at best…no one disputes there is climate change; it occurs daily, duh! What is in dispute is the extent of man’s involvement in the occurrence of said change. Follow the money and you’ll find support for man-made climate change. Follow common sense and you’ll find a star 93,000,000 miles away that is conveniently overlooked in climate change because there’s no money in it. The typical liberal acts as if it’s all about them, so of course they agree with a THEORY that supports human-centered global climate change. ABC, you heard it here first…think helio-centric…maybe you could be the next Copernicus!

      - you conveniently leave out that the CBO MUST give its estimates based on the assumptions dictated to it by the Congress. What most economists are saying is that the assumptions used by Congress were WRONG at best. Explain how using 6 years of taxes and only 4 years of benefits is budget-neutral. Apparently liberals are now able to dictate the passage of time…try again Einstein. The only good thing about Obamacare is that it will be used for the next 2 years to beat up on the remaining Congressional liberals and Obama. With any luck, the political landscape in 2012 will be so toxic for liberals, they’ll finally realize that 80% of the people are sick of their whining and just shut up (I can always dream can’t I?!?)!

      - even liberal-darling Chris Matthews is calling for rock solid proof of Obama’s citizenship. I don’t care one way or the other, myself, because his policies are reason enough for me to want him gone from office.

Bottom line is, your crew of liberal/progressive/wingnuts way overplayed their hands. It will take at least one more election cycle to clean house, but you and your ilk have awakened a sleeping giant and for the foreseeable future that giant will remain vigilant. I hope you enjoyed your short time in the sun, now crawl back under your rock and leave us adults alone.

The response from Fox was perfectly appropriate.

The study was so laughable there was no need for an analysis and refutation of it’s findings. It would be one thing if somebody used that study to support an argument in a conversation. That would be the time to tear apart the study as a flawed and dishonest piece of garbage.

Taking the time to do it just for the sake of doing it and giving attention to it only demonstrates that you think people actually find the study credible and are desperate to counter it.

So I am still waiting for the refutation of the facts, which I laid out before. Facts that Fox viewers continue to ignore. You are not a climate scientist, so your explanation is not qualified, relevant or even cogent. Please stop pretending you know about something that you know nothing about. This is specialized knowledge that you either know or your do not. You clearly do not. Thanks for proving the point of the U of MD researchers about the ignorance of Fox viewers. By the way, check out http://www.skepticalscience.com if you want a summary of the facts and knowledge that Fox is keeping from you.

“- you conveniently leave out that the CBO MUST give its estimates based on the assumptions dictated to it by the Congress. CBO economists are not stupid. They do not blindlly accept bad assumptions just to do Congress’ bidding. That is what OMB is for. I personally know two people working for CBO, and they both believe that their analysis is correct and the assumptions upon which is based are good. To read your claims, you would think that Nobel prize winning economists and academics at leading institutions are monkeys. Really sad that you have such a limited understanding of the CBO and state of the art economic analysis.

“- even liberal-darling Chris Matthews is calling for rock solid proof of Obama’s citizenship. I don’t care one way or the other, myself, because his policies are reason enough for me to want him gone from office.”

Chris Matthews is calling for proof to make the Birther movement go away, not because he has any suspicions of his own. But this call is a mistake since folks like you now point to him to prove the Birthers correct and give them credibility. The public library in Honolulu has microfiche with newspaper announcements of births. Two different newspapers have announcements of Obama’s birth on the same day. This is proof positive that he is US born. And multiple summary judgments, even by Republican judges, is proof that the facts are known and beyond dispute. This is the most definitive proof that Fox viewers are totally misinformed…to the point of needing a straitjacket. Thanks, once again, for proving what I have long believed: Fox viewers know very little indeed.
