BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian forces unleashed a barrage of mortars and artillery on the battered city of Homs for hours before dawn on Saturday, sending terrified residents fleeing into basements and killing more than 200 people in what appeared to be the bloodiest episode in the nearly 11-month-old uprising, activists said.
The government denied the assault. It said the reports are part of a “hysterical campaign” of incitement by armed groups against Syria, meant to be exploited at the U.N. Security Council as it prepares to vote on a draft resolution backing an Arab call for President Bashar Assad to give up power.
With Syria growing increasingly chaotic, Western and Arab countries have stepped up their push for a U.N. resolution to pressure Assad. A vote was scheduled for Saturday, but negotiations were continuing to the last minute as Russia, a strong ally of Syria, signaled it would veto any call for Assad’s removal.
In a blunt warning to Washington, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Saturday that if a resolution is put to a vote without taking Russia’s opinion into account it will only lead to “another scandal” at the Security Council.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe countered that after the Homs bloodshed – which he called a “crime against humanity” – “those who block the adoption of such a resolution are taking a grave historical responsibility.”
Tunisia decided to expel Syria’s ambassador in response to the “bloody massacre” in Homs and “no longer recognizes” the Assad regime, said an official in the president’s office, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with government policy. Angry Syrians stormed their embassies in Berlin, London, Athens, Cairo and Kuwait city, clashing with guards and police and – in Cairo – setting fire to part of the embassy.
Hours after the Homs assault eased, security forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya opened fire Saturday on a funeral procession for victims of a shooting a day earlier, killing seven people, activists said.

In this citizen journalism image provide by the Local Coordination Committees in Syria and released on Wednesday Feb. 2, 2012, a Syrian rebel stands next to a destroyed government forces tank as they replace on it Syrian revolution flags, in Homs, central Syria. Syrian forces have detained and tortured children as young as 13 as the government tries to crush an uprising that began nearly 11 months ago, Human Rights Watch said Friday as fresh clashes erupted between regime troops and rebels in the country's south. There were signs that the bombardment in Homs, Syria’s third largest city, was in response to moves by army defectors to solidify their control in several neighborhoods. There were reports that defectors set up new checkpoints in several areas, and two activists from Homs said defectors attacked a military checkpoint in the Khaldiyeh district Thursday night and captured 17 soldiers. The activists spoke on condition of anonymity to protect themselves from retaliation.
If defector activity was the spark, the assault signals a new willingness by the regime to unleash more devastating force against the dissidents. The defectors, part of a force called the Free Syrian Army, have grown increasingly bold in attacks on the military and attempts to take overt control in pro-opposition areas.
Khaldiyeh, a mainly Sunni neighborhood in the mixed city, took the brunt of the assault. Residents described a hellish night of ceaseless shelling that sent them fleeing to lower floors and basements of buildings.
“We were sitting at home and the mortars just started slamming into buildings around us,” said Mohammad, a Khaldiyeh resident. “There was nothing that prompted it, not even protests … people are terrified today,” he added by telephone.
Mohammad, who like other Syrians in Homs declined to be further identified, said the shelling started shortly before midnight and lasted until the early morning hours Saturday. He said residents were out Saturday inspecting the damage, looking for relatives. “It’s a catastrophe, no other way to describe it.”
Online video by activists showed chaotic scenes in a makeshift clinic set up in what appeared to be a Khaldiyeh mosque, the room filled with wounded men with gashes and broken limbs being bandaged. Several dead bodies were shown. In another video, fire ravaged a house that had been shelled, as people desperately poured water on the blaze.
The videos could not be independently verified.
Residents said most shelling came from a military installation west of Khaldiyeh and Alawite-dominated neighborhoods to the east. Syria’s Alawite minority, who belong to an offshoot of Shiite Islam, forms the backbone of Assad’s regime and the military leadership.
The government denied the assault and said corpses shown in amateur videos were of people kidnapped by “terrorist armed groups” who filmed them to portray them as victims of the alleged shelling.
Two main opposition groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees, said the death toll in Homs was more than 200 people and included women and children in mortar shelling that began late Friday. More than half of the killings – about 140 – were reported in the Khaldiyeh neighborhood, they said.
“This is the worst attack of the uprising, since the uprising began in March until now,” said Rami Abdul-Rahman, the head of the Observatory, which tracks violence through contacts on the ground.
The reports could not be independently confirmed.
Homs is a hotbed of dissent to Assad’s regime and is known to shelter a large number of army defectors. The city has seen several crackdowns by security forces but many parts of it remain outside of government control.
Ammar, a resident of the Bab Tadmur district of Homs, said the real death toll exceeded 330, and hundreds of others were wounded. He did not elaborate.
“A few more nights like this one and Homs will be erased from the map,” said the distraught man by telephone. “We are being massacred, what is the Security Council still waiting for?”
The Syrian National Council, Syria’s main opposition group, put the toll at more than 220.
It called on Russia to stop its “shameful intransigeance” at the U.N. and for the world to take action to stop the bloodshed.
Assad is trying to crush the revolt with a sweeping crackdown since March. But neither the government nor the protesters are backing down. The opposition, which began with peaceful protests, has turned more and more to arms, and clashes with the military have thrown many parts of the country into relentless violence.
This month, the regime has seemed to have stepped up its use of force to stamp out the defectors. Last week, the military launched a heavy assault in the suburbs east of Damascus after dissidents showed greater control there. Three days of fighting ensued in residential areas, killing several hundred, until the regime appeared to have silence the dissidents for now.
The U.N. said in December that that more than 5,400 people have been killed since March, but it has been unable to update its count for weeks due to the chaos. Hundreds more have been killed since that tally was announced.
The U.N. Security Council is scheduled Saturday to take up the Syria resolution, and diplomatic efforts continued to the last minute to try to avert a Russian veto.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was to meet Saturday with Russia’s Lavrov on the sidelines of a security conference in Berlin.
Lavrov said the latest version of the resolution resolves “quite a number of things which were important to us.” But, he said, it makes too few demands of anti-Assad armed groups, and Moscow remains concerned about whether it prejudges the outcome of a national dialogue among political forces in Syria that it is trying, with little success, to arrange.
The U.S. and its partners have ruled out military action but want the global body to endorse an Arab League plan that calls on Assad to hand power over to his vice president.

Two things are certain, no matter what we do: it will not end in democracy, and it will not end in Syria becoming our friend.

It‘s all pretty simple if you apply the Richard Daley priciples of governance to Obammie’s Presidency.
When a “political special interest group” like the Iranian mullahs comes to you with promises of huge caches of “Internet Contributions” during your 2008 campaign, you “stay bought” during the summer 2009 and watch the Iranian middle class die in the streets of Tehran. Then you refuse to intercede in Syria, a special child of Iran. The you turn Iraq over to the mullahs. Then you deliver a fully-intact drone; and, you refuse to take any independent action against Iran. That’s “The Chicago Way,” pumped-up on steroids for international operations. Posted on February 4, 2012 at 3:39pmAxelPhantom, it may be anecdotal, but I encountered many people that initially had no opinion about muslims, more than a decade ago. Even after 9/11, they made the distinction between militant radicals and moderte muslims. But with time, certain patterns came to forefront and he distinction started to disappear.
When Erdogan explained, a few years back, that there is no such a thing as radical or moderate Islam, quite a few people saw it as confirmation of their suspicion that the moderate Islam is just a modus operandi, not a reflection of any moderate world view.
The prediction that if the Muslim Brotherhood and salafists take over that the minorities will be slaughtered on grand scale that the current events would pale in comparison, is likely correct.
Boku Haram is already slaughtering Christians in Nigeria on a daily basis. North Sudan seems to be getting on bandwagon and making infrequent testing-the-water war cries and if the seems to be no response, they’d attack the Christian/Animist south under any pretense they ‘ll come up with. The persecution of Copts in Egypt will gain in volume and speed. The wave won’t be contained within ME (or Central-Western Africa) only, it will spill over to other places that have either a muslim majority (like Malaysia) or a sizable minority (like Thailand, but also France).

You are full of deceit, lies, suppression of women and men. You blind them with hate. You offer nothing but war, oppression, inequality. You kill innocent women, children and men. Charity is not on your list. You force your clergy to show no mercy to enemies. Christ asks us to have mercy and grace and even love for our enemy. Can you say the same? No, you cannot. You have brought NOTHING of value to the world. All you bring is misery, poverty and death. The poorest of the poor live in Islamic countries. You treat especially women with such hate, because a woman gave birth to Christ. There’s only hate and no love in you. You want world domination to enslave humanity. Your god Satan denies love, mercy, grace and forgiveness. You will be destroyed when Jesus will revenge on you and your followers for what you have and will do to God’s children. When people will know the truth they will leave you. You do not give freedom only shackles. You are a totalitarian, dictatorial system. Satan hates God’s children (Christians and Jews) and will stop at nothing to kill them Thank God he cannot touch Christians. Sure he can kill our body but our soul belongs to God. Things will get harder. But we will not despair. The Savior Jesus Christ is on our side. You are of Satan and his demons.

I have no doubt that there is something going on in the Muslim world that is very dangerous. However statements like “the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim” are blanket statements that are not only dangerous, but bear little difference from those in the Muslim faith who started spreading the ideology that “the only good infidel is a dead infidel” – or “America is the Great Satan”
We are products of our environment. They are a product of theirs and we are a product of ours. The results are the same, blanketed hate expressed in broad sweeping statements that resolve nothing and serve little purpose other than to further the egos of those who utter them.
When those American Muslims who have embraced our culture (yes, they do exist) would dare to stand against their bretheren hear those kind of statements from fellow citizens are they more likely or less likely to stand up? And then we turn around and say “where are the moderate Muslims? I guess there aren’t any!” It is hard to take a stand when both sides decry you as evil.
I have read posts that attack Catholics and Mormons with such vitrol that it practically oozes from the screen and it comes to mind….First they came for the Communists and I said nothing…..History has an aweful way of repeating itself.

As for the Christians being slaughtered in the middle east, what chance do they have but for a Muslim to stand up for them, perhaps hide them in a hidden room in their basement? Does it sound familiar?
My grandmother stood for a Jew and she landed in Auschwitz. She never regretted it, but she escaped her fate only because a German in good standing with the Reich stood up for her. Back then, the only good Jew was a dead Jew, and the only good Pole, was a dead Pole. Do you see? Back then, the Russians hunted the Poles, the intelligencia, and the Socialists, the Germans hunted the Jew and Roma and Communists. In my grandmother’s words “everyone was killing everyone” Those who survived often did so because someone else was willing to stand up and say ENOUGH! There are good people in every group even when the vast majority are going with the flow.
It is the only chance for this world not to end with a nuke up their butts. Pulling troops out won’t solve it, electing a new President won’t solve it. It is always easier to place the blame on others, but we cannot control the actions of others. It begins and ends with us. Right now from what I am reading, I don’t hold out much hope.

The fact that you claim such a thing shows your true colors. Save your platitudes; when a Muslim woman is stoned to death after being raped, you think it’s a GOOD thing. When buses full of children explode, you think it’s GOOD if some are Muslim. When a woman is murdered by her family for honor… it‘s GOOD because she’s a Muslim.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:19amFrom an historical perspective, it is. Through our weakness and timidity, Western Civilization has ceded much of these now muslim-occupied lands to the Islamic Empire. We abandoned many of our own behind the Iron Veil and left them to rot and die and be sacrificed on the altar of Allah.
We should seek now to no longer appease or submit to their Allah deity and instead seek at every opportunity to re-establish our Western Civilization at the expense of Islamic culture.
The Islamic Empire has taken enough from us. There are no more New Worlds to which we can bear off our civilization, so we should seek to regain what was once ours.
Destroy the Caliphate and liberate the suffering.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:02amThis region has had its brush fires over the years, but nothing like it have we seen in our time before. Its an epic upheavel of human misery and destruction. More will be killed unfortunately because inequity abounds everywhere and hearts grow cold because of it, therefore life grows ever more cheap. Someone will answer a solution but that day is far from us for now, people are still in their cozy cocoons in most of the Western nations enjoying this weekends game while slaughter is happening all around them. Boy we are in sad times for sure. Damascus prophecy has still not happened and its next. It will lay in a ruinous heap and Damascus will be no more. Damascus has never been destroyed by warfare and it is part of the revelations of Kingdom against Kingdom or civil war. Either they destroy it or Israel decides enough is enough because of the War that will come from the North from Syria as they let loose one last gasp of this regime in an attempt to settle the score once and for all with Israel.

If two people you really hate are fighting each other – why in the world you step in the middle? it is a very simple concept. our military is stretched thin and we are bankrupt. Besides, syria and the rebels have not done anything to us that justifies bombing them. Do you think the middle east is a playground? It is a real place with real people and real consequences. If the goal is let them kill each other off, it will be much more effective if we keep one side from wiping out the other.
If we destroy the artillery, they have a reduced capacity to kill innocents.
If we simply allow Assad’s regime to crush the rebellion, he will be far more capable to aid Iran in a fight against Israel.
Obviously it will never happen, but I can dream.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 11:45amI understand. Let me explain what would happen in that scenario…First, we start bombing syrian military targets. Lets assume innocent civilians are not killed in the bombings. The syrian government announces that the USA is bombing them, the rebels see that USA is bombing syria. What happends next? The rebels realize that they hate america more than the syria government and the stop fighting each other. They stop fighting each other and see us standing in the corner of the kitchen with cake all over our face. We are then at a state of war with syria and go through iraq/afganistan all over again

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 12:25pm“What happends next? The rebels realize that they hate america more than the syria government and the stop fighting each other.”
We have a good example of what would happen. We intervened in Libya, and the rebels were emboldened by it. They do hate America, but as long as America is helping them achieve their ends, they will gladly accept help.
“They stop fighting each other and see us standing in the corner of the kitchen with cake all over our face. We are then at a state of war with syria and go through iraq/afganistan all over again”
We don’t have to put boots on the ground. They don’t have the capability to defend themselves against our Air Force or our Navy. It would be just like Libya, except we wouldn’t let the rebels win.

If any president starts a war so called conservatives are all hard for it no matter what because perpetual war is what they crave and getting wars declared by congress is lawful but so passe and the constitution was written so long ago let’s just get to killing as much as we can,I tell you all this, endless undeclared wars and our national debt will destroy our republic faster than some terrorist with a bomb.
