Dutch cyclist Johnny Hoogerland wipes out into a barbed wire fence in this bizarre and painful Tour de France crash:
Hoogerland crashed after Spanish rider Juan Antonio Flecha was hit by a car belonging to TV station France 2. The group of cyclists were on a narrow country road only 22 miles from the finish of a stage. After the collision both riders were able to re-mount their bikes and continue the race although bloody and half-naked, leaving shreds of cycling pant behind them in the French countryside.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 11:13pmNice driving in the car .Look at it in slow motion ,you can see the driver has her cell phone up to her ear and is putting on lipstick….nah just kidding. Could have just as easily have been that guy I saw on the interstate reading his newspaper ,you know the one I made pi$$ his pants when I rolled up next to him and let loose with my portable air horn.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 9:46pmWow all these hurtful comments…what gives? Maybe…just Maybe it was timed by the France car to swerve to avoid the tree and swipe the rider but I don’t think so. What this says is single lane roads and mixed use of cars and bikes abreast of one another should be banned from TDF. Either in front or in back, not by the side. What if another cyclist crashed and he needed to swerve to avoid, the car would have prevented that reaction. it‘s europe and they don’t have the same value on life I suppose. Maybe the EU should spend a little more on infrastructure and less on retired entitlements living at the age of 40 years old.

Boxing, football, auto racing, wrestling, ice hockey, baseball, street fights… all gather an eager crowd, especially when the ultra-violence breaks out, which it often does. Public hangings historically drew most of the townspeople, not just to see someone hurt, but to watch someone die. It’s human nature and there is nothing wrong with it.

Posted on July 10, 2011 at 11:11pmThe driver had to swerve to avoid hitting a tree. There were tons of people behind the car, so slamming on the brakes wasn’t an option. Basically the bikes were too far over and left the driver no place to go. Watch it again before you rush to judgment.

it‘s a bike race the priority is for the cyclists that car driver didn’t get his priorities right .

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 12:27amSinger, you obviously have no clue as to what is required by car drivers during a cycling road race. I have been following and watching the Tour de France since the mid 80′s. The car does not have the right-of-way, in fact, they must slowdown/stop/avoid any contact with the cyclists. The driver should have not accelerated, but rather taken his foot off the accelerator pedal and this whole event would have been avoided. This is a rarity in road racing which only goes to show how incompetent the driver of the car must really be. I will grant you that there is a lot of jockeying of vehicles during a big race such as the TDF, with camera crews, motorcycles, team cars, doctors, officials, etc, but none take precedence over the bicyclists ever.
Report Post »GrumpyCat
Posted on July 11, 2011 at 12:43amI have watched the video on slow motion and the car had no excuse whatsoever for swerving.
First this is a bicycle event. The roads were closed to all others. The bicycles have right of way. If the road was too narrow then the car should have stopped until the bicycles passed. No excuse that there were others behind the car as those others had no problems stopping to keep from running over the downed bicyclists. Why didn’t other cars behind the car also wipe out more bicycles while swerving to “avoid” the tree?
Second, the car missed the tree by more than the car swerved into the bicycles.

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 1:46amwow thats messed up…wondering if the driver of the car had any money on this face of the race!? definetly had no reason 2 swerve over like he did!! Thats jusr wrong!!!

Posted on July 11, 2011 at 3:53amApparently, the motorcycle drivers got a yelling at on Sunday morning because of interfering with the race the day before. I was watching France 2 (the only French network which carries the race live) when this happened. The sportscasters had normal spontaneous reactions…then there was total silence. Then I had to change channels to get any news on the accident. Business as usual for state run MSM France!
