Bloomberg Wages War on Other States’ Gun Laws

WASHINGTON — A report being released Monday by a mayors group finds that nearly half of the guns that crossed state lines and were used in crimes in 2009 were sold in just 10 states.
Those states accounted for nearly 21,000 guns connected to crimes in other states, says the survey by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an association of more than 500 mayors led by New York‘s Michael Bloomberg and Boston’s Thomas Menino.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives traced more than 145,000 guns used in crimes in 2009 and found that more than 43,000 guns were sold in other states.
Forty-nine percent of those guns were sold in Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California or Arizona.
The mayors group wants to push for tighter state and federal gun laws in order to stop the flow. “There are 12,000 gun murders a year in our country, and this report makes it perfectly clear how common-sense trafficking laws can prevent many of them,” Bloomberg told the New York Times. That’s despite nothing in the news reports proving that the guns were sold illegally — it seems the report is only making the observation that guns sold in some states have been used in others.
“[The report] finds that, across the board, those states with less restrictive gun laws exported guns used in crimes at significantly higher rates than states with more stringent laws,” the Times says.
But Chris Cox of the National Rifle Association says the data are flawed. “It’s completely bogus for a group with a clear political agenda to release some study based on selective statistics,” he told the Times. “This is not a serious discussion. But this is what we’ve come to expect from Mayor Bloomberg and his gun control agenda.”
Not so, says James Alan Fox, a criminology professor at Northeastern University. “A state’s gun laws are only as good as the weakest link in the national chain,” the Times article quoted Fox as saying. “A state with weaker gun laws becomes a supplier for states with stronger laws.”
Cox, however, isn‘t afraid that Bloomberg’s report will have an affect — especially due to the Supreme Court’s recent Second Amendment decisions. “Do I think Mayor Bloomberg and his group are desperate for relevancy in a debate where they have no legitimate role? Sure,” Cox said. “Do I think their approach will continue to be rejected by the American people and Congress? I do.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:39amGun control is working so well down in Mexico that Bloomburg would like to see it here also. Hey dumba##, When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns, the police don’t walk beside me 24 and 7. I am willing to bet most of the weapons used were not in the possession of the original owner and were also reported stolen by the owner. Look at anyplace that restricts guns and you will find an elevated crime rate. Pull your head out!!!!

He is living proof of the self-destructive stupidity of the urban voter. We actually Need one more gun law, and that would be one that mandates all state governments to recognize the validity of the carry permits of Every other state as is done with driving licenses.

Law enforcements purpose is to investigate crimes, not to protect you.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:32amPlease New York…Please do something this election year about your mayor. Elect someone that will do something about the GZM and someone who will look at the source of the real problem in this instance…criminals. They will get guns-if they cant get them-they can manufacture them. In middle eastern countries the AK-47 can be manufactured by uneducated with little more than blacksmith tools. Please understand-the vast majority of us gun owners are out to protect ourselves, and our families. Sure, these criminals leave your cities to come buy guns somewhere else-but they go back home to commit crimes because the chances of someone shooting back or being able to defend themselves is much lower where you live. I invite you to join the ranks of responsible gun owners who want the ability to protect themselves-against criminals and the government…

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:28amThe report never mentioned if the guns were stolen from owners in those other states. Also it makes sense that cowardly criminals would want to commit their crimes in states and cities with the toughest gun laws. Less chance of getting killed by an armed citizen. Could it be that restrictive gun laws lead to more crime not the other way around?

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:02amBloomberg is a fascist and thinks he can control what goes on in other states. The last long gun I purchased was purchased in PA because the dealer had it in stock. NJ Laws have driven gun dealers out of the state and the government looks for any opportunity to take away a dealer’s firearms license. The Pa dealer had a suit filed by Bloomberg and the city of NY regarding what Bloomberg calls a STRAW purchase. Bloomberg was going around to other states and setting a trap for out of state gun dealers to fall into. The dealers who fought Bloomberg all won. But this particular dealer didn’t have deep enough pockets to fight him so he settled. Turns out every purchase now has an extra form which is filled out and sent to the City of NY. Absolutely unconstitutional but fascists like Bloomberg don’t care about the Constitution. Bloomberg belongs in jail. He has no authority except in the City of NY. The Liberal Left should have never given him a Third term (he usurped the term limits). Vote freedom stealing thieves like Bloomberg out of office.

The best way to cut down on gun crime is to arm your self; secure your weapons so they don’t get stolen. Of the firearms used to comit a crime, how many were obtainted LEGALLY by the person using them? Law abiding citizens don’t go to a gun store; by a pistol then go rob the 7-11 down the street; Bloomberg for the Mosque, but against the Second Ammendment. Posted on September 27, 2010 at 11:57amYou know, they are already going after gun shows in Texas. This happened back in January, 2010. You can read the links below, the first is what happened, and the second is an update. See, here in Texas, is you are a dealer, you are required to do the federal background check. But if you are a private seller, you are not. This means if I want to sell my gun to anybody, whether on the street, in a pawn shop, between buddies in a shooting club, or even at a gun show, I don’t have to do a background check. Not to mention I wouldn’t have the resources to do one. Now the BATF is trying to take away our rights to commerce by forbidding us from private sales. Allegedly, the BATF is setting up people by sending illegal aliens with valid driver licenses to purchase a gun from these private sellers, then arresting the sellers. All a seller must do is check ID for age, but a private seller is not responsible for determining the immigration status or running a background check. Could you imagine if they started denying sales to Hispanics on suspicion that they were illegal? Then they’d get sued for discrimination. It’s a no win for these guys, and what the ATF is doing, allegedly, is against the current gun laws and against the Constitution.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 2:03pmAmen brother. I was moderately armed prior to 2008. Now I’m adding as much to the arsenal as I can afford. This revolution is eventually going to be fought street by street. Maobama is setting up the US Military to be a eunuch, so it will be up to us Real Americans to take our once proud United States of America back and return it to God loving, bible reading, gun toting Americans. In case you may have forgotten, Maobama promised to build a civilian security force that is trained, funded, motivated as well as the US Military. Well health care law has a provision that sets up a recurring fund of 14 M to be used for recruitment and training of an office corp to command his civilian security force. That provision of the law has all ready been implemented. For boots on the ground, here is where the “troops” originate. ACORN, Americorps, SEIU, AFL-CIO, college students who used nationalized student loan program. (10 year commitment US Government to cancel loan) So my friends, the time to arm and make sure adequate ammunition supplies are established is now or it will be too late. Posted on September 27, 2010 at 9:54pmInteresting statistics, did you know that approximately 45,000 people per year are killed by car accidents? Oh, that’s 12,000 deaths by murder which includes all methods.
(A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun “for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere.” Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.”)
(Based on survey data from the U.S. Department of Justice, roughly 5,340,000 violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2008. These include simple/aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders.Of these, about 436,000 or 8% were committed by offenders visibly armed with a gun.)
(A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:
• 34% had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim”
• 40% had decided not to commit a crime because they “knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun”
• 69% personally knew other criminals who had been “scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim”)
Based purely on statistics: Shouldn’t we then issue more firearms to the population? :)
