Blue to Red: Financial Sector Practically ‘Showering’ Republicans With Campaign Money

Back in 2008, financial services companies, Goldman Sachs in particular, loved the Democrat Party and then-Senator Barack Obama.

“[E]mployees of New York-based Goldman gave three-fourths of their campaign donations to Democratic candidates and committees, including presidential nominee Barack Obama,” Bloomberg reports.

But then something happened. He got elected.

After the 2008 presidential election, members of the financial community were no longer valued donors but were instead “fat cats” who don’t pay their “fair share” or “play by the rules.” And then the White House condoned and coddled that whole “Let’s Destroy Capitalism” Occupy Wall Street thing.

What we’re trying to say is that members of the financial community, Goldman employees in particular, seem a little sore with Team Obama. So much so, in fact, that the Obama campaign has repeatedly tried to convince Wall Street that they’re not out to get them.

Apparently, it’s not working: Goldman employees are “showering 70 percent of their contributions on Republicans.”

“The company’s employees gave $6.1 million in 2008, 75 percent to Democrats,” Bloomberg reports. “This year, Goldman employees have given $4.9 million, also more than anyone else, with 70 percent going to Republicans [emphasis added].”

“That’s the biggest switch among the 25 companies whose employees have given the most to candidates and parties since 1989,” the report adds.

But is this change in the financial sector all that noticeable?

“Six of the 13 corporations whose employees reversed their political giving are financial institutions, including four of the top five. They are: Goldman, Bank of America Corp., Morgan Stanley (MS) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) The other two are Citigroup Inc. (C) and UBS AG. (UBSN),” Bloomberg reports.

“Much of their money went to Romney’s presidential campaign and the joint fundraising committee set up with the Republican National Committee. Of the 10 companies whose employees gave the most money to Romney Victory, nine were Wall Street firms,” the report adds.

While a few people believe the financial services sector has switched loyalties because of President Obama’s anti-banking rhetoric, others think Wall Street has simply decided to support Republican candidates, most especially former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who have pledged to do away will onerous and stifling “reformatory” legislation such as Dodd-Frank.

“Wall Street fell in love with Obama in 2008,” Stephen Hess, a professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University in Washington, tells Bloomberg. “It had more to do with the heart than the head. And love affairs, at least of the political variety, usually end in disappointment or disillusion. So Wall Street has now returned to its own reality — as well as one of its own.”

Final Thought: We’re going to go ahead and predict that this will become a major talking point for Team Obama (if it isn’t already). They‘ll argue that Romney is making deals with Wall Street and he’s, like, totally buying the election … or something.

But, you know, back when Team Obama was raking in record-smashing amounts of cash from the financial sector — we don’t remember hearing many complaints. Just saying.

      Goldman Sachs was always going to get preferrentional treatment is it did from the DOJ because Timmy Geithner is Goldman Sachs.

      Right you are. Too, the revocation of the Glass-Steagal act, enacted to prevent banks from making investments which was a BIG contributor to the last Great Depression, and a primary cause of this one, isn’t now favored all that much by Wall Street types, by and large, but which Obama favors, is another reason that big money types are turning away from Obama. They took a bath due to their greedy gambling and now want a saner policy.

      Right again. And so is Henry Paulson, Robert Rubin, all the way down the line. This administration hates these big money types, but they do their bidding, although they are throwing obstacles in their way from time to time.

      Fighting for the Light is MUCH more difficult than taking the easy way out by fighting for the darkest dark.

    Well considering that wall street did somethings to cause the crash and the bankers did some of that stuff to, it might not be a good thing if there funding Romney, it may suggest hes a greater evil to the economy. History shows groups like them screwing over the people and than eventually being punished by the people through death or exile.

    When I first scanned the headline I seen red and blue and thought they were talking about the red and blue pills. I think most people are still taking the blue pill. Anyhoo…

    I’m not so sure that getting a bunch of money from Goldman Sachs is a positive in anyway. Personally, I like the guy who’s top donors were the Army, Navy and Airforce. I bet if Romney does get elected McDonald-Douglas, Lockhead, and other companies in the Military Industrial Complex’s stock will get a good boost.

      It’s a Matrix reference, not a drug reference. Neo could take the red pill and see what was real or he could take the blue pill and continue to live in the illusion. By taking the blue pill Republicans will still be the good guys and the Democrats would still be the bad guys. I have high hopes for Cruz, but the 2010 Tea Party candidates got to Washington then immediately abandoned Tea Party principles by voting away our rights. Yet everyone on here still believes they’re great. They deceived us and need replaced. The bottom line is the Constitution says we have a right to due process and a jury by our peers, and the 2010 Tea Party candidates overwhelmingly said that we don’t. (except for Rand Paul) The constitution says the government needs a warrant with specifics to spy on us and to search us, the 2010 Tea Party candidates say we don’t. The Constitution says we have a right to peacefully assemble to protest. The 2010 Tea Party candidates say we don’t. Are you unaware of this or are you planning to get them out of office when their terms expire? Or will you listen to the media say they’re “tea Party” and give them a pass?

From 8000 at the end of the cheney/bush reign of error to over 13000 now: historic creation of wealth for Americans who own stocks, funds, 401k, annuities and pensions? Never before under any prez such a dramatic rise in wealth for the private sector. Look at it now!” It would have been up substantially regardless of who was elected.       Other reasons are the artificial means that the Demoncrats are using to inflate a new bubble with all the deficit spending and money printing.       I have cleaned up in the stock market over the past 4 years. You could easily see the housing crash coming. I sold everything in 2007. I started buying back in in 2008 when things cratered. On Jan 20 2009 Obama was inaugurated and the S&P was 805. Now it’s 1400. That is a 75% increase.

      Anyone who says the stock market hasn‘t been good since Obama took office doesn’t know what he is talking about. Companies have been making money hand over fist the past 4 years and have record amounts of cash on hand. The reason it hasn‘t translated into employment is because housing hasn’t recovered. When it does we will see another runup in the stock market.

      Hey and it only took five plus trillion dollars of deficit spending to achieve. That will never come back to bite us or anything. See for as much as liberals, even many of our usual liberal Blaze trolls, like to self righteously tout their propensity towards reason, their entire belief system revolves around short term gain in the present for long term consequences in the future. Indeed you can tax the rich heavily for awhile, but eventually they will leave as happened in Europe, killing jobs and production. A country can‘t buy it’s way to prosperity if it doesn’t actually produce anything, which is the fundamental flaw with the lefts bottom up mentality towards economic growth. How many of the things we buy are actually made in the US anymore?

      Alternatively, you can deficit spend your way to prosperity for awhile, but not in the long term. Oh its understandable. It can be very seductive to buy now and pay later, so to speak.
