Bob Dole: Picking Gingrich Would Lead to a ‘Sweeping Victory’ for Obama

Bob Dole: Picking Gingrich Would Lead to a Sweeping Victory for Obama

AP

Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole slammed Newt Gingrich on Thursday, saying it would mean a “sweeping victory” for President Barack Obama if Gingrich gets the GOP nomination.

Dole — who endorsed Mitt Romney last month — blasted Gingrich over his Speakership and blamed him for Republican election losses in 1996, including Dole’s own failed presidential run against Bill Clinton.

“In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad,” Dole wrote in a statement to National Review. “He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year.”

Read Dole’s full statement below, via National Review:

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. By 1997 a number of House Republican members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when Newt could read the writing on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with President Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics like shutting down the government helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it, and I’m not certain he knew either.

The Democrats are spending millions of dollars running negative ads against Romney as they are hoping that Gingrich will be the nominee which could result in a landslide victory for Obama and a crushing defeat for Republicans from the courthouse to the White House. Democrats are not running ads against Gingrich which is further proof they want to derail Governor Romney.

In my opinion if we want to avoid a sweeping victory by Obama in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He could win because he has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president in whom we could have confidence and he would make us proud.

Dole’s statement comes during a wave of Gingrich-bashing by other conservatives, including, most recently, by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. DeLay — a central figure in both Gingrich’s 1994 GOP House takeover and later the 1997 “coup” that ultimately lead to Gingrich’s resignation — said during a radio interview Wednesday the former House Speaker is “not really a conservative.”

“What has been said about Newt is pretty much true — he had to step down because the Republicans, the conservative Republicans wouldn’t vote for him again as Speaker,” DeLay told conservative talk radio host Michael Berry on Houston’s KTRH.

“He’s not really a conservative,” DeLay continued.” He’ll tell you what you want to hear, he has an uncanny ability sort of like Clinton to feel your pain and know his audience and speak to his audience and fire them up. But when he was Speaker he was erratic, undisciplined.”

DeLay was forced to resign from Congress in 2006 following an indictment on money-laundering charges. He was convicted in 2010 and subsequently sentenced to three years in prison, but is free on bail as he appeals his conviction.

this was the guy who lost to bill clinton after newt handed the democrats thier ass two years earlier to control the house for the first time in over 40 years. A 6th grader could have won that one. Clinton’s approval was below a pregnant ant. I was happy with all five republican candidates a few weeks back. I am no longer happy about mitt.
The crypt keeper is starting to resurect the establishment carter republicans, This is not good. I for one am tired of the beltway establishment giving us thier version of conservatives. I won’t vote for paul but i certainly have talked to enough young voters to know why he is appealing to many. Young people are starting to understand that both establishments stole their future. Remember, the NE establishment hated speaker newt not to mention then sen. santorum. I can tell you I find paul, newt and santorum a lot more trustworthy than romney’s people who are making republicans look like a bunch of scizo whiners for obama.

As I have heard Glenn say ” I would vote for my shoe before Obama.” I feel the same way, but I do not think Mitt Romney has the ability to set the tone of the election. He cannot run against Obamcare nor Unemploymen,t the 2 biggest concerns as Ben Shapiro stated in his article yesterday. The dems always gloat about the Clinton era and who was the speaker during those years? Newt is far from perfect and in this economy I want someone who has actual ideas to correct the situation, not bogus claims about fairness. To win elections you go to your base and attract the moderates, you do not run a moderate and try to attract conservatives. To help understand this watch the so called conservatives who are for Romney (Ann Coulter, Karl Rove) they cannot explain his past away enough. Newt is able to attack Obama on every front and in a manner that inspires people opposed to Obama. They dems are not prepared to run against Newt and would have a hard time coming after him on the issues in my opinion.

Romney revising disclosures for overseas accounts
      By NBC’s Michael Isikoff

Mitt Romney could face new questions about his overseas investments after a campaign official acknowledged to NBC News that his campaign is revising his financial disclosure forms to report more than a half dozen offshore holdings, including income from a multi-million dollar Swiss bank account that was not disclosed last year.

The tax returns released by the Romney campaign this week showed that the Ann Romney Blind Trust had reported $1,783 in interest income from a bank account held at UBS in Switzerland in 2010. But the Swiss bank account — as well as other offshore investments in the Cayman Islands, Bermudas and Ireland that appear in the trust fund’s tax returns — were not disclosed in Romney’s financial disclosure form filed with the Office of Government Ethics last August…

First of all, if Mitt is a RINO that would make Newt a RINO too. They both supported socialized medicine. How can you argue against Obama’s health care bill when they both supported the idea in the past? They will both be hammered over and over again on that point. Newt has a myriad of speeches where he praises the progressive movement. Do you want a guy who thinks FDR is one of the greatest presidents in U.S history? How can you argue that someone one who believes the progressive movement was great is even remotely close to being a conservative? NEWT took 1.6 million dollars from Fannie. That isn’t going to be an issue? Mitt was initially for the bail outs and one of Bane’s ventures took bail out money.

Why do we keep letting the media set the narrative? They pick the most liberal candidates and argue that they are the only people that can win. Newt has a 60% disapproval rating but only he or Mitt can win? Mitt, Newt, and Rick both have one win. Stop letting them ignore Santorum and stop buying into their narrative!

Look at Mr. Nicely’s record in Mass. On April 12, 2006, Romney signed the Mass. health reform law, which requires nearly all residents to buy health insurance coverage or face escalating tax penalties such as the loss of their personal income tax exemption.

The list of losers that hate Newt go on and on. If and when Romney gets the nomination I for one am leaving the Republic Party. Not that I am leaving, but the party has left me.

Babeuf you made my point by ignoring what I said and just attacking who you thought was my candidate. My point was why does it matter if Newt wins the debate when people don‘t won’t hear what he had to say but instead will just attack him. We know liberals don’t use logic in arguments, they ignore our points and call us names, now we know you are of the same breed. Once again thanks for making my point, it doesn’t matter what Newt says, it doesn’t matter what points he makes, it doesn’t matter if he beats Obama in a debate because people (like you) believe what they believe and ignore anything that puts doubt on that belief.

Can you Newt supporters explain this to me: Romney is a RINO who supported socialized medicine. You don’t like Romney because he passed the Mass. health reform law. The rationale for not supporting Mitt or any other candidate is if you support anything like the Mass. health reform law you are not a conservative and should not get the nomination. Who do you support instead of Romney? Newt, who favored socialized medicine for 20 years! Do you see a problem with your logic?

Newt is a real conservative who supported socialized medicine for 20 years, is to the left of John freak’n Kerry on global warming, and thinks the progressive movement was great for America. Are you joking? 1+1=150. You are not making sense!

Sorry Bob, I misunderstood what you were saying at first. Now I understand that what you mean is that Obama would end up with some job requiring a broom if Gingrich gets elected.

    Sorry for the confusion.

The more I see and hear all these ‘high dollar’ Republicans talking against Newt, the more it makes me wonder what they are all afraid of and makes me give more consideration to Newt everyday.

Reading and listening to the media across the board, it sounds like people on both sides are afraid of Newt…

Now that Newt has been caught in an obvious lie about the ABC interview thing he has some ‘splainin’ to do. May have had his day in the sun; wings are melting, thought he could fly above us all, maybe NOT the smartest guy in the room after all. I sort of like RP. Seems humble to me. God help America if O wins again.

“Sitting on the couch with Nancy Pelosi is the dumbest single thing I’ve done in the last few years,” Gingrich has said.
      ——————————————————-
Sure Newt has baggage and has had his anal exam in the media, but when is Romney going to get HIS anal exam? Romney is too soft and squishy, just like McCain was, and that’s why I will not vote for Romney, unless he gets the nomination.
I believe Newt has more of a chance to beat Obama than the soft Romney does. Newt can think on his feet, write four or five words on a piece of paper and create an hour and a half speech from it, is intelligent, articulate, and most of all, won’t hold back on Obama. Another question is why all the big GOP’ers AND MSM outlets are pushing Romney?
If Romney gets the nomination, I will vote for him, but I don’t want to go through the frustration and disappointment I went through with McCain. Santorum and Paul are polling too low to get the nomination.

      That’s the problem Annon….
Romney has been getting kisses from the media throughout all of this, just wait to see what happens IF he gets the nomination… no more media kisses (except from Beck) the media is in Obama’s pocket. Mitt is in for a HUGE let down once that happens, he will be dazed and confused wondering what the hell happened to all the love!

So you used to be a supporter until the MSM, liberals and Rino’s starting attacking Newt. Or was it when Glenn started his quote selection smear campaign? Why not judge Newt on what he actually accomplished, it was pretty huge? The guy will destroy Washington DC and that is what they fear the most.

Who would of thought since there’s clips of him everywhere extolling the virtues of progressivism. When over 80% of republicans voted to oust the FDR lover that should tell you something about him.Big government Newt that’s him alright, and Dole’s right if Newt got the nomination we would have for more years of the Marxist POS.

Yes they are, and it doesn‘t look good for Newt’s chances. Noted that Gingrich definitely has his issues, and many times he has been his own worst enemy, as well as many of his statements out of the nineties and his positions in that same time frame were progressive leaning, if not leaning. Has he changed any? Probably has, but also probably not sufficiently.

My main problem, aside from concerns with Newt, are my concerns with Romney, who is definitely not a conservative, is an establishment candidate (notice the establishment Washingtonians who have endorsed him, e.g., McCain, Dole, Rove, and the list goes on), and still trying to justify his failing Romneycare in Michigan, trying to differentiate between Obamacare, instead of acknowledging he(Romney) made a mistake. Not a Romney fan, and though I would vote for him if he was the nominee, doubtful that he can beat Obama.

Like Santorum, but don’t know that he has the fire power and necessary support to knock out Obama.

Doesn’t leave us much left. Ron Paul has a good domestic policy, but his foreign policy, believe it or not, is not as bad as people portray. The question remains, can he beat Obama? It’s possible that if things play out a certain way, Paul could defeat Obama, but doesn’t look promising at the moment. Still could be a white knight or knightess come riding out of the woods, but that is a bit of a stretch at the moment too.

Really need some divine intervention, enabled only by serious concerted
