The bodies of all 21 people on a Chilean CASA 212 military plane that crashed Friday have been recovered using Apple’s Find My iPhone feature.
Gizmodo has more:
Remains from the CASA 212 from Chile’s Air Force were found floating in the sea near Tierra Banca and Playa Larga, in a zone between the islands of Robinson Crusoe and Santa Clara, and Juan Fernández airport.
The crash point was located thanks to one of the victims’ relatives. The victim had an active iPhone at the time of the crash. Presumably out of desperation, the relative tried the Find My iPhone feature that Apple offers for iOS devices.
[...]
It’s surprising that the iPhone survived the impact and continued to work, even more so because the crash was really extreme, according to the military sources.
Gizmodo, which translated the Chilean news report, reported that no pieces of the plane larger than 20 inches have been recovered. Four bodies have been recovered; the others are being retrieved from the bottom of the sea using robots.
“After a search involving the commander in chief of the FACh [Chilean air force] the conclusion has been reached that the impact was so powerful it would have led to the instant death of those on board the plane,” said Defense Minister Andres Allamand, according to an Associated Press report.
The plane crashed last Friday afternoon after two failed attempts to land in difficult weather on the islands.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on September 10, 2011 at 9:20pmModern technology is really awsome. It seems as though everyone now has a cell phone that they talk on all the time…Driving, waiting at cash registers, eating in restaurants, walking around… I kinda long for the old days before all this stuff. I don’t want to be available to anyone with my phone number, 24/7. Some talk louder than necessary, seemingly wanting others to know they have a phone. Big deal! People that can’t pay their bills and are too damn sorry to get a job have cell phones. Kinda like my renters that rent large screen tvs and can’t pay their rent or utility bills.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 11:22pmYes, Chilean’s have an Air Force, they even have an air demonstration team, which I had the pleasure watching at an air show at Nellis AFB in 1997 for the 50th Anniversary. They were quite impressive.
What a wonderful, but sad way to locate a loved one who died in a plane crash. I am sure this was not the original intent to find your iPhone, but sometimes technology works in other ways than first intended.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 10:26pmIf only the authorities were as smart as the relative of the lost passenger! But that would require some measure of desperation, which is born of love, but not necessarily of moral responsibility.
Probably explains the problem in Joplin and the Gulf as well.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 9:25pmIt’s great they found the bodies; however, I really hope that active cell phone wasn’t complicit in a navigational issue that may have led to the crash!

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 7:29pmThis and/or FCC triangulation of cellphone signals is what I suggested to help locate bodies in Joplin. Never could find anybody who would listen, though.
Frustrating as hell, when nobody will listen.
Remember all the oil cleaning companies (high- and low-tech) that nobody would listen to??
Oh, well. Some communication problems, even the Internet cannot help.

Posted on September 8, 2011 at 6:29pmGod indeed works in mysterrious ways. This would be the only reason I would get my preteen a phone, so if I lost her, maybe I could find her via the phone. Goes to show ya, technology can be good as well as bad!

Posted on September 9, 2011 at 2:03pmI am behind the times. I have an old Nokia cell phone that handles calls and voice and text messages. I know nothing about iPods, iPhones, and iPads, but, if all iPhones have a Find MY iPhone feature, then, an iPhone would be the best birthday or Christmas gift for any teenager!!!
