Bodyboarder ‘Cut in Half’ in Horrific Australian Shark Attack

Bodyboarder Cut in Half in Horrific Australian Shark Attack

(AP File Photo)

SYDNEY (The Blaze/AP) — A shark bit the legs off a bodyboarder at a popular surfing spot in western Australia on Sunday, killing the man, police said. Authorities were searching for the shark as well as the man’s missing limbs.

The man in his early 20s was bodyboarding with five friends when the shark attacked, a police spokesman said.

According to the Daily Mail, the shark grabbed the man from the waist down and bit him in two:

Kurt Morris, who was having lunch at the Bunker Bay Cafe with his family when chaos erupted on the beach, said he had been told by the man’s friends that he had been torn apart.

“They were saying they were just two meters away from him,” he said. “From the waist down, it was all gone.”

Another witness said, “They pulled him out of the water and there was a lot of blood on the beach. There was just no hope, he was cut in half.”

The police spokesman confirmed the lower half of the man’s body had been ripped away.

“He was bodyboarding with about four or five of his mates when he was taken out of the group,” the spokesman said. “He‘s lost the lower half of his body and he’s deceased.”

It happened at the surfing haven known as The Farm, off Bunker Bay near the western town of Dunsborough. The shark likely thought the man was a seal, authorities said. The beach was closed after the attack.

About 30 surfers were in the water at the time of the attack, according to beachside cafe employee Deb Pickett, who called police and an ambulance after hearing the disturbance.

“We had some sharks spotted far out at sea a few months ago, but they never come this close to the shore,” Pickett said.

She said helicopters were still searching the area for the shark late Sunday, while rescue staff searched for the man’s limbs, which she believed had been taken by the shark.

Local official Ian Stubbs said it was the first shark attack in the area in more than 20 years.

does anyone notice how the environmentalist leftist media and biologists always inserts the excuse “ the shark thought it was a seal”. i disagree. The shark has been chasing seals for tens of thousands of years. i doubt that a surfer has any of the evasive talents of a seal and therefore became the chosen prey of the shark, they will always pick the prey that they feel will pose the least risk just like any predator would. im sure the shark knew exactly what it was after, a land mammal , almost helpless in water. sad but true.

Do you really think his grief stricken family is reading the jokes about him in the Blaze? Just because an unfortunate thing happened doesn‘t mean it’s wrong for others to go on with life…

Who is reading this thread is secondary. While it would be more deplorable if his family were reading, it nevertheless, stands on its own that the people making joke are desecrating themselves and others by their callous, cruel humor. If this is your idea of funny – I’m so glad that my only contact is via the internet. Got any good Hitler or Hurricane Katrina jokes? Perhaps we could all have a good laugh about cancer or people who’ve been burned over 90% of their body. Call up Jon Stewart he may be looking for more writers. I believe the concern may be about the moral coarseness and disrespectful vulgarity of puerile jests about a particularly horrifying loss of human life. Such concern might extend to alarm about a society capable of producing individuals whose personal values and sensitivities permit them to chortle and make what they regard as cute and witty jokes about something that is no joking matter. There is consolation in the hope that most of them are adolescents, from whom such thoughtless and smirking crudities can of course be expected. Even so, the inability to comprehend the callous and cynical nature of such commentary, and the attempt to defend the indefensible, are far from reassuring.

It is because people are not “Christ-like” meaning the people cling to the dead. Many, many people are dead inside and they dwell on those whom have died, not because they are worried about the dead, but because they are conditioned to deal with death that way, and they groan only for themselves. By the way have you noticed how more and more nature seems to be attacking people?

Not making fun of the dead isn’t about the actual person that died, but about respect for those that lost a loved one. Do I know him or his family? No, but that doesn’t mean I should be uncivil. I’m not preaching morality, but instead trying to bring back civility. Don‘t any of you think that it’s tragic that someone so young lost their life? Imagine what you and your family would have missed if you would have died at 20. Your kids and the good they will do or everything you will teach them wouldn’t exist. Will never exist. When did any life become so worthless? It’s not like he was doing something stupid, he was just unlucky. I’m just trying to put it in perspective of his family and what they are going to have to do without by his passing.

Personally, Briten821, I find it supremely hi-larious – of the gut-bustin’, knee-slappin’ variety – that a complete stranger’s 20-something-year-old son is DEAD. Oh yeah, nothing rings like pure, unmitigated comedy of the highest brow that a young man, with all of the promise in the world, has suddenly been snuffed out from this world JUST LIKE THAT.

I‘m actually soiling my trousers and spitting morning joe on a brand spankin’ new PC monitor in complete laughter that some nondescript family out there will no longer have a kindred spirit to spice up their reunions, picnics, holidays or dinnertime discussions.

Oh yeah, it’s always beyond funny to have your best friend, older brother, father or cherished son die in such a tragic way. Nothing is more hilarious.

Some individuals react inappropriately when faced with something upsetting, that they cannot handle. This is a coping mechanism. I have a friend who laughs when nervous or upset. She laughed in court one time, in front of a judge! Men especially, will crack jokes and do it at the most inappropriate times. They do not mean anything by it. We all react differently to horrific news.

I would ask this, about the surfer that was killed, or of his friends. If you know there are sharks of this size in the area. Don’t you think you are taking a risk by going out further than waist deep? He knew the risk, and took any way. People do it every day. God bless.

This should not happen to anyone. This will happen again and again. It’s easy to blame the shark. however, sharks are instective predators. Swimming in shark territory is a concious decision. It is not necessary for survival. With sharks, feeding is necessary. You will never see a live shark on dry land, unless it has been dragged there by someone.

I hate it when they say ” the shark probably thought he was a seal…” They don’t think like that. It sees something smaller that is moving and he takes a bite to see if it is good. It is that simple. It is the Disney generation that wants to personify animals to give them human thoughts and feelings. It is pure instinct. When they are hungry they eat. It is unfortunate for this boy he bodyboarding in the dining room.

But here is an interesting fact – blue sharks don’t only eat when they are hungry. They actual keep eating if something is there to eat. They will regurgitate what’s in their stomachs in order to make room for more. Click on the link and see #38…

I’ve been surfing here in San Diego and have never seen a shark while out there…We did have a fatal Great White attack 2 years ago…the guy was an ocean swimmer…If you’re wearing a black wetsuit…a shark can mistake you for a seal…Bottom line…we’re part of the food chain out there..!

Kind of presumptuous to tell GOD what to do don’t you think? HE is the Supreme Creator, I think HE doesn’t need your temporal, merely human advice.

      @UlyssesP

What a dumb jerk you are for critisizing someones prayer for someone else.
God surely doesn’t need a moron like you speaking for Him either.
      Who is being “presumptuous”?
      Shut the heck up……doofus!

Not funny. I’m sure that if one of your loved ones was killed in such a horrific way you would welcome “tastes like chicken” jokes, right? Grow up!

If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
If my loved one died like that in an accident, I’d be the first to crack a joke. I have before. So don’t be so sure. What else are you “sure” about someone you don’t know that you got wrong? Look in the mirror. You think you’re “sure” smart aren’t ya!
You made you the judge? We all have plenty of tragedy in life, and will have some more no doubt. I don‘t know this kids family and don’t care.
Judging my feelings and thoughts as if you were Gods, how typically progressive and christian. Who died and made you the authority, Christ?
Oh wait, he did die, but what about that authority part?
If you don’t like it, don’t read it.
Grow up? Why, to be a sour puss like you?
My compassion for this man’s family is the same place that the compassion for the 105 people die each minute on this planet is. Each minute. Where’s your compassion, reserved only for whom you deem worthy?

After the initial shock of m y family member being eaten by a great white shark, I would cry then laugh, because it was a risk he or she took. There are sharks that ATE dinosaurs in the past. Don‘t pity people who don’t take mother nature seriously.
