Bombshell: GOP Refuses to Support O’Donnell in General Election (Updated)

Before Christine O‘Donnell even had a chance to deliver her remarks to accept the Republican Party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) announced that the party’s fundraising organization would not be supporting the Delaware tea party favorite in the Nov. 2 election.

According to Fox News, Republican aides have confirmed that “O’Donnell would not be getting national fundraising support.”Bombshell: GOP Refuses to Support ODonnell in General Election (Updated)

This latest news underscores the expanding rift between the GOP establishment and tea party grassroots conservatives.  The tea party has proven to be a formidable force in taking on the GOP establishment.  RedState’s Erick Erickson notes tonight that the NRSC‘s unwillingness to help O’Donnell may actually be a “good thing for O’Donnell given the NRSC track record.”

In just a few of the most contentious primary contests, the division has been clear:

  • In Alaska, tea party candidate Joe Miller ousted Republican incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski;
  • In Nevada, tea party favorite Sharron Angle pulled off an upset over GOP favorite Sue Lowden;
  • In South Carolina, tea party-backed Tim Scott fought off two “establishment” Republicans to secure the 1st District nomination; and
  • In Kentucky, Rand Paul embraced his tea party roots and comfortably handedly Republican favorite Trey Grayson.

Is the ascendancy of grassroots conservatism threatening the Republican Party’s resurgence in Congress?

One thing is for certain: the lack of GOP support will not slow down Christine O’Donnell as she steams toward her general election face off with Democrat Chris Coons.  There has been no word yet on whether Castle will offer O’Donnell his endorsement, but in her victory speech Tuesday evening, O’Donnell encouraged Republicans to “bury the hatchet” and work with her over the next two months to defeat Coons.

“A lot of people have already said that we can’t win the general election,” O’Donnell said. “It is those same so-called experts who said we had no chance of winning the primary.”

“It will be hard work, but we can win,” she said.

Update:
When asked about reports that the NRSC would not support O’Donnell in her general election run, spokesman Brian Walsh responded, “We reserve the right, as the Democrats do, to invest money in any race at any time.”  Though this latest statement does not refute original reports, it may suggest the party witnessed the Twitterverse explosion of outrage from grassroots conservatives over the party‘s early denouncement of O’Donnell’s general election campaign.

In the meantime, Sen. Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund PAC is vowing to step up its efforts on O‘Donnell’s behalf:

The party’s coordinated spending limit for a Senate nominee in Delaware is $87,000. The RNC and the NRSC each have that limit so it is double that amount. $174,000 total. Since the party is saying they will cut her off, this will be SCF’s initial goal. We will likely raise her this money from grassroots by next week.

Update II:
Republicans’ intra-party divisiveness continues: Mike Castle is reportedly refusing to lend his endorsement to tea party-backed Christine O‘Donnell after she defeated him in tonight’s Delaware GOP senate primary.  When asked if he thought the Republican Party would come around to support O’Donnell in the general election, Castle’s campaign replied that “they should save their money.”

    Michael Steele, RNC Chairman, just spoke at a Republican rally in Tucson this week. In his speech he madea point of saying we had to stop all this infighting and backbiting. It was after all a “Unity” rally. So much for unity. All words and no substance. Shame on you Mr. Steele. As so many are voicing on this post, that is why we joined the TEA party. We don’t trust tthe RNC anymore.

      Steele congratulated O’Donnell on Hannity yesterday and is behind her 100%. Remember he‘s battling the Rino’s every day too. I don‘t think a day goes by that someone doesn’t call for his ouster. That’s sad because he is doing a good job and not playing the elitist games.
      Great Job Christine O’Donnell you have my support! I hope and pray we can come together and get more conservatives elected that won’t cow tow to the R or D parties!

    Somebody needs to scream to the “Republican establishment”, that the reason they are not in power now ( and will likely never be again) is because they stopped listening to the people and walked away from the principles that got them there in the first place. The Republican party had better wake up and wake up fast or they may find that whatever power and influence they thought they had; has become an anachronism of the past.

      @LETHALITY.. I understand what you’re saying. I currently live out here on the Left(west) coast and just saw Rove on Fox news. You can tell he‘s pissed that O’Donnel won. He actually starts tossing out the dirt on her about her finances, college, etc. etc. He sounded just like a DEM!! Her opponent is pro-abortion, pro gun control etc etc. Rove sounded as if he was campaigning for the Dems!!! IT IS WE THE PEOPLE! Vote for whose right for you, NOT party! Amen!

    We will not be supporting the GOP nor the NRSC.

    Blaze members are strongly encouraged to NOT donate money to the GOP nor affiliates. We do not need the GOP and we are better off without the GOP.

I started this 9 years ago and the postage free envelopes still coming. Looks like they don’t read them, they are just searching for checks or credit card numbers.       Working together we will. Just look at the current primaries today. NONE and i mean NONE of the established Rebublican Candidates got their seats. They all went to the T.E.A. Party!!! We tried to tell them that this was not an issue of R and D, that we would back a Democrat that was a conservitive, one that would agree to the actions that the American people demanded. They, The establishments of both parties didn”t listen. Maybe they are listening NOW!! Glenn Beck had a show where explained right and left (complete govt(left) v. anarchy(right)), up and and down (Rep &Dem) Look It Up!! or read his book The Overton Window (its on amazon.com). It will help you understand what happened today! But instead of the establishment pushing the window it is WTP!! We are sick as a country because both sides have been pumping the gov’t up, pushing it to the left! Both sides have been infected with progressivism. The T.E.A. Party is We The People WTP. Not the moral minority, not some special interest group, Not a george sorros, nor a rockefeller. This is one of the largest unpaid volenteer efforts I have ever even heard of since the founding of this country. I think we have Glenn Beck to thank for the awareness and the momentum we have been able to muster so far. Oh Yea!!       The elitism we decry exists in both parties. The Republicans are just as dirty and childish as the Dems. That’s why the Tea Party freaks them out equally. The common American public has a solid voice and it’s not saying what they expected to hear! Let’s clean this place UP!

      I know it feels like a time of joy and celebration, but I feel the need to toss in a sober thought. We have seen the democratic machine in action before and it’s not something to be taken lightly. We have (to our credit) split the RNC of old in half. Anyone who thinks the next few months are in the bag is not being realistic. However hard we have worked to date must be doubled. Further, we must cause the RNC to join us (as we will never join them). It’s time to send a “come to Jesus” message to the RNC and offer them a chance not to face total obscurity.       I am officially done with the Republicans. I have seen too many like McCain, Graham, Castle, Snowe, Brown, Collins et al that just cannot be trusted. Another one is Newt.       keep the R next to your name on the elections board…

      REASON:
      if you are not a registered R, you wont be able to vote for REAL conservatives in thier primaries… with the POTUS elections coming up, do we really want to get stuck with a RINO because we couldnt vote for the R nominee in the primaries, or do we want to take our country back, one election at a time? Just because you have an R next to your name doesnt mean you have to send them money…. I wont EVER AGAIN

      I plan to withhold my political contributions from the Republican Party, and give directly to the candidates that I support.

      Hopefully, the GOP will stop taking marching orders from the DNC and will get rid of Michael Steele when it realizes that the Tea Party is collecting more money to support true Conservatives than Steele is collecting to support RINOs. When faced with the choice of a “Republican” who votes with Democrats 90% of the time, but has a good chance of winning a general election, and a Republican who is truly Conservative, but doesn’t have a good chance of winning without the backing of the GOP, I’ll take the Republican (no quotes) any day just to teach the GOP a lesson. What these GOP bureaucrats fail to understand is that it’s not the Tea Party that will make GOP irrelevant, it’s the fact that the GOP is taking advice from its opponents on how to win elections.

      Since the two parties have a joint bank accout named DupliCrats they can just send the money over to the Democrat wing. Are we understanding that not only we have a fight for our country against the D‘s but also the R’s

      Just saw the talking heads mention that the whackos have taken over the Republican party????? The satement is direct proof that we are kicking the Democrats out and replacing with folks that abide by the Constitution and liberty leaning candidates. Our only salvation will be in taking over the Republican party! I know it will make the left kick and scream but we need to finish what we started in 2012. This is just the first battle and we need to adopt the long term view.

      I live in Delaware and can tell you her support is strong and widespread. Castle was nothing but a status quo LIBERAL who is now pouting. I would have voted for the democrat if Castle had won. I cant be happier that she won and there is alot of buzz around her about it. Go Christine you can do it!!

I’m working on our checkbook today-and extra money will be going to back her…and I will continue to do this until Nov. elections. Sending money to Sean Duffy and Scott Walker too…Take Obey’s seat and send Russ Feingold packing!!

      Republicans seem to be clueless for the most part that Democrats will initially wipe them out with the help of the T.E.A. Party before they go head to head with the Democrats. There is an old adage that should be relevant to the Republicans: “If you can‘t beat ’em, join ‘em.”

      This is not true in all States. In AZ, Independents have the option to vote in either primary… just not both primaries. Many voters are not aware of this. Check your state’s voting laws to see what is available to you. I changed from Rep to Ind several years ago.

      Yep .. I feel like she can win without them .. heck , what this country needs is a strong third party , which is not corrupted , when Karl Rove and the GOP , feed another GOP member to the wolves “just because ” its time to say “Bye Bye” .. In reality I cant stand either party , one is bad , the other worse .. Both are owned , bought and paid for by the Mega corps .. the GOP and DEM’s are prostitutes to big buisness . who needs em ? I sure dont !
