Book: Michelle Obama Clashed With Presidents Aides, Wanted to Stay in Chicago

A new book says there was tension between first lady Michelle Obama and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, and that she considered putting off moving the rest of her family to Washington when her husband began his term. (AP)

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — First lady Michelle Obama is a behind-the-scenes force in the White House whose opinions on policy and politics drew her into conflict with presidential advisers and who bristled at some of the demands and constraints of life as the president’s wife, according to a detailed account of the first couple’s relationship.

New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor, in a book to be published Tuesday, portrays a White House where tensions developed between Mrs. Obama and former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and former press secretary and presidential adviser Robert Gibbs.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the book, “The Obamas,” Friday evening and The Times posted a 3,300-word adaption on its website that appeared to capture its most revealing accounts. The book is based on interviews with 30 current and former aides, though President Barack Obama and the first lady declined to be interviewed for the book.

The book portrays Mrs. Obama as having gone through an evolution from struggle to fulfillment in her role at the White House but all the while an “unrecognized force” in pursuing the president’s goals.

She is seen publicly as the friendly and popular face of the softer side of the White House, the one reading to school kids or promoting exercise as a means to reduce child obesity.

But according to Kantor, the first lady initially wanted to stay in Chicago instead of moving into the White House when her husband began his term:

As Michelle Obama realized over the summer and fall of 2008 that she was likely to become first lady, she asked a question that probably would have surprised outsiders: could she and her children delay moving to the White House? Perhaps it was better, she told aides and friends, to remain in Chicago until the end of the school year, giving her children more time to adjust, rather than coming right at the inauguration. Her notion, though short-lived, was telling: she didn’t understand or care what sort of message it would send to a public enthralled by the new first family, and she had trepidations about life in the spotlight, let alone the prospect of residing in a monument-museum-office-military compound-terrorist target-home.

She ultimately decided to go to Washington immediately, not because of the obligations of office, but because of “wanting her family to be together,” Ms. Jarrett said.

Once she arrived at the White House, according to Kantor, there was concern about how the White House appeared to the rest of the country in the throes of economic turmoil:

Mrs. Obama often found herself caught in an internal debate about how the Obamas should look and live, travel and entertain. As the first African-American first lady, she wanted everything to be flawless and sophisticated; she felt “everyone was waiting for a black woman to make a mistake,” a former aide said.

But her husband’s advisers — in particular, Mr. Gibbs — were worried that the White House might appear oblivious to public anger about joblessness, banker bailouts and bonuses. The result was constant, anxious give-and-take between the East and West Wings about vacations, décor, entertainment, even matters as small as whether to announce the hiring of a new florist.

“We all have watched what happens when people get caricatured,” Mr. Gibbs said in an interview, explaining why he policed such personal matters. With a mistake like John Edwards’s $400 haircut in 2007, “there’s no way to correct that.” Other aides said there was a reason Mr. Gibbs became the main enforcer of the rules of political life: because Mr. Obama, all too aware that his wife never wanted that life, would not.

According to Kantor, early in 2010 as the president’s health care agenda seemed in danger of collapsing, Mrs. Obama let it be known she was annoyed by how the White House was handling the strategy. After media reports indicated Emanuel was unhappy pursuing the health care overhaul, Emanuel offered to resign, Kantor wrote. The president declined the offer.

By that spring, however, Kantor writes that Mrs. Obama “made it clear that she thought her husband needed a new team, according to her aides.”

Among the book’s most provocative anecdotes, Kantor recounts a scene in which Gibbs, frustrated after tamping down a potential public relations crisis involving the first lady, exploded when presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett told him the first lady had concerns about the White House response to the flap. The initial commotion had been over an alleged remark by Michelle Obama to French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy that living in the White House was “hell.”

Gibbs cursed the first lady, who was absent. Kantor writes that Gibbs later said his anger was misplaced and that he blamed Jarrett for creating the confrontation. Kantor writes that Jarrett appeared to have been too quick with her criticism of Gibbs and that two aides to the first lady later said Jarrett had misspoken.

The White House had a cold reaction to the book, calling it an “over-dramatization of old news” and emphasizing that the first couple did not speak to the author, who last interviewed them for a magazine piece in 2009.

“The emotions, thoughts and private moments described in the book, though often seemingly ascribed to the president and first lady, reflect little more than the author’s own thoughts,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said. “These secondhand accounts are staples of every administration in modern political history and often exaggerated.”

The book, in an array of reconstructed anecdotes, depicts a first couple often wishing they could escape the confining White House life more freely; a president who at times gets deeply frustrated by how the press covers him; and a former chief of staff, Emanuel, who let loose with profane outbursts on staff members. All of those themes have been presented in some form in other publications.

One incident recalled that Jarrett used a phone aboard Air Force One to call a New York Times reporter. The reporter was pursuing a story about how Obama‘s West Wing was essentially a big boys’ club, and Jarrett was calling to argue that the premise of a male-dominated operation was overblown. The book says even though Jarrett was the one making the call, it was Obama himself who was managing the response to the Times’ story even before it came out by “personally dictating talking points to the aides who would speak to the reporter.”

In another, the book describes how Obama, after winning a U.S. Senate seat and writing a best-selling book, “The Audacity of Hope,” sought self-protection and privacy as he came to terms with his new fame. Some staffers came up with a word to describe times when the senator couldn’t connect with people: “Barackward,“ a combination of ”Barack“ and ”awkward.”

But despite the White House pushback to the book, Kantor also includes many positive portrayals of both Obamas as committed parents and a down to earth power couple who have not lost their perspective.

Other revelations in the book:

- During the struggle to pass health care reform, Obama was committed to tackling the massive problem of rising health care costs despite the political costs. “Michelle and I are perfectly comfortable if we’re only here one term if we feel like we really accomplished something,” the book quotes the president as telling aides.

- The first lady grew angry when Emanuel promised she would appear at a Florida congressman’s event in exchange for a health care vote without consulting her. She attended the event, but to signal her disapproval refused to commit to campaigning during the 2010 midterm elections, holding out for nearly a year.

- Despite her reticence in 2010 to campaign during the midterms, the book says Mrs. Obama now has no qualms about 2012. “Michelle had been playing it safe, storing up political capital, and now she wanted to spend it all on her husband’s re-election campaign.”

So she is portrayed as being independent of her husband– so as to make her all the more effective on the campaign trail. How not surprising is that!

I love the whole storytale story about maybe not moving to Washington right away. Really!!? What, did she think– everyone would just leave them to their “private” life if she and the girls stayed in Chicago? Oh come on! Is she really THAT stupid– or does she just think we are that stupid?

UNIX…If so called Republicans keep alienating Ron Paul supporters by calling them kooks and nuts, they will stay at home. People had better get it in their heads that Ron Paul supporters like me are Patriots that want to return to a Constitutinal Government. We want government out of our lives and we want the POS POTUS we have now gone.

Keep calling Ron pauls supporters names and I will NOT VOTE at all. I am still willing to vote, but the wrath of Ron Paul naysayers is wearing thin for me. I am getting to the point where I would like to see it all crash so we can rebuild it on the Constitution.

So wake up you Ron Paul bashers…you are bashing a Veteran, a Patriot and a true American that wants nothing more than a Constitutional government. Keep bashing and I for one will let you have Obama again.

@UNIX. You are what I would call a common sense Conserative who understands what we are faced with in the upcoming election. Romney from all I can at this point WILL probably be the nominee and the one to go up against Obama. We all need to rally behind the eventual nominee and it won’t be Ron Paul.

Ron Paul needs to get his head out of his rectum and be a uniting Republican voice when his campaign flounders again and tell his supporters to do the right thing and support the Republican nominee instead of pushing useless 3rd Party candidates just to be an A-hole. Ron Paul could go a long way in showing that he puts Patriotic Conservative America first and himself second. If he wants to remain a footnote in history and a pariah he will… or he can show Conservative America (for the first time)… he is truly the man.

      First my personal beliefs:

I love my Country, and it is a Republic not a Democracy. I believe that the left has go more left as time has passed and the right has also. The Republicans are what the Democrats used to be 75 years ago. Conservatism has been almost lost … to many to be an old fashioned Republican you must be a kook/nutjob. We don’t see many of them anymore so it is not “the norm”. I consider a constitutionalist a conservative.

Foreign policy is where the Ron Paul train derails right? I don’t think so. The key here is HE won’t go to war with Iran. The constitution says it is Congress that must “declare war”. He follows the constitution. If congress declares war he is under obligation to the constitution to become “Commander in Chief” and lead us to a swift victory. That is the Conservative stand on war but not the Republican or Democrat view.

I see Mitt, Rick and Newt as Big Government Liberals. I want to help the world… But if we are financially sick and can’t take care of ourselves we are no good to the rest of the world. Israel can defend itself and remove the nuke threat.

You can tell the way she acts after she shopped at Target….. how she looks down at all of us when she goes with…….how many people did she take with her to Spain? How much tax-payer money did it cost to go to Martha’s Vineyard, and take a separate plane so she didn’t have to wait a few hours more to leave? How much tax-payer money for them to go to Hawaii? (another separate plane). She…..99.9% of the time has that mean-chip-on-the-shoulder-look about her. She didn’t want to come to Washington, DC? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. What a complete phony! While they are spending us blind….they could care less for us out here, otherwise anyone with a heart would not be doing the things they are doing. Like George W, not playing golf with respect for the military. Notice o-loser could care less about respect for anyone but himself. They go and do as they please no matter the cost. Unemployment numbers in the tank, homes and more homes in foreclosure, prices at the pump and wow, the grocery prices are really going up. They know what they are doing. After all they were educated at Harvard. They might have book sense, but lack total common sense. Total losers and no class. I have never seen a First Lady act as she does. Oh, how could I forget……mooooooochele has the entitlement mentality.

Moooochell, like many blacks who moooch off the system, like her undergraduate and graduate degrees, then say stupid things like, “this is the first time that I have been proud of my country”, are a bunch of ingrates, who think the world owes them everything. if you Google the extravagant spending of the Obamas once they became President and First lady, she will remind you a bit about Marie Antoinette, who told the peasants, who had no bread, “let them eat cake”. There are people who say, “what a family man” of Obama‘ but it’s a bit like the farmer, who said, “Bless me , my wife and kids and no more”, for he has been in a position to help his extended family both in the states and back home in Kenya, but obviously does not have any empathy towards them, for he does nothing for them, nor does he in reality really care for the American people, for he perpetuates a family destructive welfare system and surrounds himself with progressive, anti-God types, who believe that the collectivist, anti-freedom, anti-liberty, anti-individualism, anti-free enterprise and anti-property rights, all detrimental to our traditional value oriented, Judeo-Christian way of life.
To buttress my argument and confront those who would in any way ascribe to Obama any Christian attributes or empathies, I would draw your attention to Obama’s 2006 trip to Kenya to openly campaign for Raille Odinga for President, a man who butchered Christians and burnt over 600 Christian churches.

Mrs. Obama often found herself caught in an internal debate about how the Obamas should look and live, travel and entertain. As the first African-American first lady, she felt “everyone was waiting for a black woman to make a mistake,” a former aide said.

We dont care about her heritage or color, only the blacks/democrats do. What we care about is her commie/anti American views and attitude about America, her abuse, and Marie Antoinette attitude, the thousands of 3# lobsters the poor are paying for her to eat, and her $4 Million dollar vacations on our dime when we cant afford to go on a $400 vacation sleeping in tents.

Impeach nobama for his many violations of the US Constitution. This Shite bag should be in prison.

I would not be surprised if the Obama’s were building a new White House in Chicago to move into after they declare martial law in 2012 and the construction at the WH (in Washington, DC) is just an underground, one way, hi-speed rail to the new WH in Chicago.
And yes, she is one angry person.

She never thought everyone was “waiting for a black woman to make a mistake”. That is doublespeak for “I am gonna do what the hell I want, and anyone who has a problem with it is racist”. Both the Obamas are completely full of it and full of themselves. And seriously, they think she is the “softer” one? Oh please, something smacks here. Was this a concerted effort to raise campaign cash no longer streaming in because more idiots are FINALLY waking up? It would seem so. Anyone who buys this book is donating to a campaign.

Something is very wrong with two grown adults that find racism under every leaf, rock and blade of grass. Obviously they were not discriminated against in their education and jobs, or they would not be where they are now. They just use racism to build up their voting block. They stir the racism pot to keep the contributions coming and the people going to the polls. If anything both her and her husband are racists against whites and Jews. There are many, many instances of it during his 3 years on the throne. She takes separate vacations from her husband, she even spent his birthday away from him. If she wanted to go home to Chicago, no one is stopping her. But no worries michelle o, January 15th, 2013 you can go home.

Talk about a ‘chip’ on one’s shoulder.. good grief. For a supposedly educated person she seems oblivious to her irrational feelings of a black woman put upon by whites. This is imbedded in her brain. She does project her hatred of white people and it does seem to make her life quite unhappy.
GMAFB.. she is the FLOTUS.. what more does she want.. does she think no white people voted for her hubby ? And anyone who doesn’t like him .. must be his color? Couldn’t be his marxist/communist policies? Couldn’t be his down right angry demeanor directed at America and the American people?
ps.. she should have taken the Pillsbury Dough Boy’s advice.. but then again.. he is white. I think it is very sad that many blacks are conditioned to see everything as color based.. thank you Rev, Wright.. Jesse Jackson.. etc.
I don’t know about you but I was taught that all men are equal and made in the likeness of God. I NEVER heard any sermons demonizing any human being at church. Sermons were always about how each person could be a good person and get to heaven… not about hating anyone because of their color etc.
