Book: Obamas Covered Up Whimsical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Bash Featuring Johnny Depp & Tim Burton

Book: Obamas Threw Whimsical Alice in Wonderland Bash Featuring Johnny Depp & Tim Burton

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" -- the inspiration for a whimsical Halloween bash held at the White House in 2009, according to a new book.

A forthcoming book about the president and first lady reveals that they threw a lavish “Alice in Wonderland”-themed Halloween bash featuring actor Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton, the New York Post reported.

“The Obamas” — written by New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor and set to be published Tuesday — details the whimsical affair, which coincided with the release of Burton’s Disney film that starred Depp as the colorful Mad Hatter.

It took place in 2009, the Obamas’ first Halloween in the White House, and came at a time when the unemployment rate was at a high of 10.1 percent. Depp, in full costume, greeted guests from atop a table.

“White House officials were so nervous about how a splashy, Hollywood-esque party would look to jobless Americans — or their representatives in Congress, who would soon vote on health care — that the event was not discussed publicly and Burton’s and Depp’s contributions went unacknowledged,” the book says.

The Post, which purchased a copy of the book from a Manhattan bookstore, described further:

Tim Burton decorated it “in his signature creepy-comic style. His film version was about to be released, and he had turned the room into the Mad Hatter’s tea party, with a long table set with antique-looking linens, enormous stuffed animals in chairs, and tiered serving plates with treats like bone-shaped meringue cookies,” reports the book, which The Post purchased at a Manhattan bookstore.

“Fruit punch was served in blood vials at the bar. Burton’s own Mad Hatter, the actor Johnny Depp, presided over the scene in full costume, standing up on a table to welcome everyone in character.”

The Obamas’ daughters, Malia and Sasha, then 11 and 8 respectively, “sat at the table, surrounded by a gaggle of their friends, and then proceeded to the next delight, a magic show in the East Room.”

For the same Halloween, "Star Wars" director George Lucas sent the original Chewbacca costume out to mingle with trick-or-treaters, the book says. (AP)

The White House had hosted toned-down Halloween activities for area schoolchildren earlier in the day, before the Obamas went inside for the exclusive invitation-only party attended by children of military personnel and White House staffers, the Post said.

And Depp and Burton reportedly weren’t the only celebrities in attendance at the White House that day: The Post reported that “Star Wars” director George Lucas even sent the original Chewbacca costume out so the wookiee could mingle with trick-or-treaters.

Previously released details from Kantor’s book revealed Michelle Obama clashed repeatedly with President Obama’s advisers and that she even wanted to stay in Chicago instead of move into the White House right away when her husband began his term.

Failure of a career politician named Ron Paul

Paul, who has served 11 terms in three different stages dating back to 1976, didn’t get a single law passed until 2009, when he authored a bill that allowed for the sale of a customs house in Galveston, Texas. Failure is often the norm in Congress, where only 4 percent of proposed bills get a President’s signature, but Paul’s approach to lawmaking is particularly suited to not getting things done.

Of the 620 bills sponsored by Ron Paul during his long career in the House of Representatives, only four have ever made it to a vote on the House floor and only one of those became an actual law. An analysis by The Washington Post shows that Paul’s success rate of 0.2 percent falls far below that of most legislators, as Paul has chosen to stand up for his personal crusades, rather that build coalitions for more popular, but less ambitious, proposals.

Hey, Rational Man, I’m not a Paul supporter, but it occurs to me that when you say, “Paul, who has served 11 terms in three different stages dating back to 1976, didn’t get a single law passed until 2009,” my first thought is, I wish that were the case with ALL of our congress critters. Just think of how much horrible, rotten, dirty, no-good legislation we could have avoided in that case.

The problem in Washington is not that they “don’t do enough.” The problem is they do WAY too much.

What your arguement for Paul’s failing to get anything done convienently overlooks is that he did try to pass 620 bills and FAILED! He is a career LOSER! Except the one time he partnered with Barney Frank.
Not someting for a so called conservative to boast about. IMO

I‘ll go through the motions and vote if there is an election this year but I’ve told people for two years now that something will happen that will cause Obama to declare an emergency and postpone the vote. If that doesn’t happen they will just cheat their way back into the White House.

Obama went as himself..To full of himself to go as anyone else.Look‘s like the first lady has had the time of her life on the taxpayer’s. So has her husband..I’m more worried about what the people behind the scenes are doing…America is doomed.. please wake up people…
