‘Boot Against Their Throat’: Analyst Warns Obama Admin Will Bankrupt Coal Industry

Patriot Coal, one of the largest producers of thermal coal for power stations in the U.S., announced on Monday that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
“The coal industry is undergoing a major transformation and Patriot’s existing capital structure prevents it from making the necessary adjustments to achieve long-term success,” said Patriot Chairman and CEO Irl F. Engelhardt in a statement.
“Our objective is to use the reorganization process to address important issues in an orderly way and make the Company stronger and more competitive,” he added.
Although the bankruptcy news is unfortunate, it’s not entirely surprising. Indeed, for the last couple of years, the coal industry has been battling three specific elements: competition from natural gas, warmer winters, and, of course, the policies of the Obama administration.
The last of these three has been particularly damaging to the industry, according to FreedomWorks’ Tom Borelli.
“The coal industry‘s going to go bankrupt because of President Obama’s boot against their throat,” said Borelli during a panel discussion on Fox Business.
“From the start, his Energy Secretary [Steven] Chu called coal his ‘worst nightmare.’ Biden once said ‘no coal [plants here] in America.’ The president has had a hostile, aggressive stance against coal and now we’re seeing the impact on hardworking everyday Americans,” he added.
Watch Borelli discuss the coal situation [via Fox Business]:
“He’s talking about job outsourcing with Bain Capital,” Borelli said, referring to recent accusations the Obama reelection campaign has leveled against GOP rival Mitt Romney, “My God! Look what he’s doing to hardworking Americans in Kentucky, in West Virginia.”
“Then he wonders why unemployment is so high. He’s driving people to that government plantation and to food stamps,” he added.

I think I disagree. To some the outlook is bleak, but frankly the outlook was bleak for that ragtag crew in the 1700s fighting against the most powerful monarchy and military in the world. We forget that this is a choice land, and if Americans will put their trust in God and keep his commandments, then this country will be delivered from oppressors, foreign or domestic. Also, don’t discount the strength of the American people. Yes, there will be pain and problems….but I am certain the U.S. as we know her will live to fight another day.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 7:53amNot only Union Miners and Truckers, but also employees of electricity providers who use coal fired plants need to be up in arms about this irrational over regulation by Obama and his cut throats at the EPA. There have already been several closures of coal fired generating plants causing the loss of numerous jobs and leading to higher electric rates for customers.
Obama himself stated that under his plans, “Electricity rates will necessarily rise”. Who will that affect the most? Those in the lowest income brackets, who in many cases rent poorly insulated homes or even substandard (Cold and drafty [winter] or unbearably hot and humid [summer]) urban apartments.
Even more amazing is that the LOONIES in the “Green Movement” can‘t seem to realize that if it wasn’t for COAL and OIL, there wouldn’t be any forests left in America. The trees would all have been used for fuel as they have been in many foreign countries.
WHAT BETTER WAY TO DESTROY THE AMERICAN ECONOMY THAN TO DESTROY THE PRODUCTION OF ENERGY! – - – Obama is well on his way!!!!

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 1:40amWith so much natural gas under production, there isn’t a lot of reasons to be burning dirty coal. Power plants where I live have converted from oil to natural gas as coal was never a big item in California. As for people losing their jobs in West Virginia and Kentucky, it’s about time to train them for something other than digging rocks. We don’t need to keep using coal to keep these folks working. That makes about as much sense as saying that everyone should still be driving a horse & buggy so that the producers of buggy whips will have jobs. Get real folks…times change!

Report Post »Nautral Gas, in all it’s current hoop-la and fan-fare isn’t as plentiful as we are led to believe, once demand for it starts to tic up a bit so will the prices. One of the states you mentioned, West Virginia, has as much natural gas resources as anyone in the world yet the the resource that moves their economy, employees the bulk of their poulation is COAL– Right now the only thing making natural gas SEEM affordable is the fact that coal is being regulated to the point it is becoming un-affordable to use. Take the largest power plant in the West Virginia,John Amos, that puts the bulk of its power on the grid for use in NY and PA and they have spent well north of a billion (s) over the last five years on clean coal technology just at this one plant– as a matter of fact– the last project they completed to to satisfy EPA standards cost 3 times more than the plant originaly cost to build in 1972. Now the plants emmisions are as clean or CLEANER than your gas-fired power plant. Yet the Obama people aren’t happy and for the umpteeth time undr Obama,, they are raising the bar again on coal fired power plants. Gas isn’t naturally cheaper than coal– Coal is being manipulted to be more expensive than gas– A simple fact.

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 10:06amGas requires pipelines to move it. The pipelines are at full capacity they take money and permits that take time and many years to get through the process. Even if millions are spent there is no guarantee Keystone is proof of that. Coal is the most cost effective energy and the new combustion plants are clean. Coal can gear up and down as it takes men to mine it and trucks to move it. Gas is more expensive to to drill than coal is to mine; add that cost to the needed pipelines there are some costs that are not being pointed out to the public. Once we kill coal there will be no competition for gas and the unmentioned costs will be “necessarily” shoveled back at the customer. The lawsuits from the rabid green environmental groups have already started and history has shown they will not decrease causing prices to soar even higher. Who will take the hit? I am thinking we will.

Coal miners don’t dig. They use continous mining machinery or longwall mining machinery. Mules don’t haul the coal away. Shuttle cars do. Mining coal is not an unskilled job. Most miners go to Fire Boss School and/or are trained by the company before they go underground. Surface miners use extremely large equipment to load and haul. All of this is very dangerous.
Coal fired untilities use air precipitators and scrubbers to reduce emissions. Coal provides 50% of our power.

BHO is very much like the magician that does a coin trick. We are busy watching what he wants us to watch while sneaking some other part of the agenda into the mix. The problem is that there are so many of them you can’t follow them all. The Environment that Obama is claiming to save and clean up by killing the coal industry is only a tool ( one of many he uses ) to grab power and force submission on the American people. No one would take the steps he has taken that is really trying to promote economic recovery. Over-reach in regulation, stopping the XL pipeline, allowing the likes Frank and Dodd to write a finance bill and actually having the nerve to pass it, the two people that helped create the housing bubble and now SOS Clinton is going to promote a UN gun regulation that has the ability to regulate our right to bear arms. This is all craziness, and the sad part is if he gets a second term it‘s all over if it isn’t all ready too late. Surreal isn’t it.

If he somehow doesn’t do the honorable thing and resign, then he will get the Constitional boot out of the Whitehouse. Holder’s gone regardless; might even be so within the next few months. Why you ask? He will be impeached for not upholding the law. Can’t bring impeachment charges with Reid in charge of the Senate but fortunately he will be given the boot from that responsibility. Regardless, BO’s going and hopefully he will have a good retirement. :)

Posted on July 11, 2012 at 12:06amRecall that Obama declared that under his energy plans, electrical rates would of necessity skyrocket and so we are seeing this made reality. By shutting down the coal industries; forcing closure of the energy producers of the land, forcing the useless/worthless ‘green energy’ down our throats, he is causing a reduction in availible power to non-government areas of the nation.
He will use the distribution of power, given the remotest of opportunitites, to his advantage to control areas. Imagine a town or city dissenting in the least with him, say Phoenix in summer, and for a few weeks in the hottest times, all power for water distribution, cooling, pumping gas and such goes away.
