Booted Out: Blaze Reporter Gives First Hand Account of Occupy Wall Street Eviction

NYPD officers swooped down on Occupy Wall Street shortly after midnight to evict the protestors from their Zuccotti Park campground,  kicking off a series of arrests and leaving the movement in disarray.

Booted Out: Occupy Wall Street Evicted By Police in Midnight Raid

Police arrested just under 200 protesters (according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg), including some who chained themselves together inside the Occupiers’ kitchen tent.

I arrived on the scene shortly after the first wave of arrests took place in the park. The remaining protestors swarmed the police barricades that had been set up to prevent anyone from getting within a city block of the Zuccotti Park site.

(UPDATE: Judge halts eviction order and new rules — occupiers to return)

The Occupiers gathered around me were furious and confused. Early attempts to get a consensus on next steps were drowned out by verbal abuse directed at the police.Booted Out: Occupy Wall Street Evicted By Police in Midnight Raid

Some of the organizers announced that all Occupiers should break up into small groups to avoid the police informants they claimed were in the crowd. The group nearest to me discussed linking arms and walking directly through a police phalanx, but others backed off at the thought of intentional mass arrest.

The next two hours, Occupiers played a cat-and-mouse game with police in full riot gear, trying to make their way back into Zuccotti Park. When it became clear that the human microphone technique would not be able to outwit trained officers with surveillance helicopters on site, a stalemate ensued.

But that uneasy calm ended around 3:00 in the morning when violence broke on one of the barricaded street corners.

Some video I took from one of those corners is below (Content Warning for Language):

Before the raid started, police passed out leaflets that the park would be “cleared and restored” before the morning, according to the New York Times. Officers set up a battery of flood lights before they moved on the Occupy site and began to confiscate and discard property left behind.

A police Captain reportedly announced that “The city has determined that the continued occupation of Zuccotti Park poses an increasing health and fire safety hazard.” Protestors responded by gathering in the kitchen area of Zuccotti and chanting “No retreat, no surrender,” “This is our home” and “Barricade!”

The move may have been in response to the Occupiers’ threats to shut down Wall Street and the New York City subway on Thursday to commemorate two months of successful occupation.

Looks like the Occupiers may have to put their celebration on hold.

As for what’s next, the Mayor’s office tweeted out that the protestors must leave the park but will be allowed to return after it has been cleared– without any tents or sleeping bags.Booted Out: Occupy Wall Street Evicted By Police in Midnight Raid

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement Tuesday that the evacuation was conducted in the middle of the night “to reduce the risk of confrontation in the park, and to minimize disruption to the surrounding neighborhood.”

He said after the cleaning, protesters would be allowed to return but “must follow all park rules.”

“The law that created Zuccotti Park required that it be open for the public to enjoy for passive recreation 24 hours a day,” Bloomberg said. “Ever since the occupation began, that law has not been complied with, as the park has been taken over by protesters, making it unavailable to anyone else.”

If the city enforces park rules against structures and overnight sleeping,  it would eliminate Zuccotti Park as a home base for the Occupiers. That means the Occupiers will have to find a new home, or disperse for the winter.

But at this point, the City of New York has regained the initiative its battle with Occupy Wall Street.

Anyone notice that when Buck says “he arrived,” he was actually nowhere near the actual park? I disagree with the OWS movement, but when there’s a media blackout and midnight raids on American citizens, I get more worried that some of the protesters are actually right…

      Bloomberg’s decision was calculated strategically to give cover for all the players;

The OWS gang gets to live comfortably inside during the winter, still planning to come back and start anew in the spring…since they were forced to leave – they get to ‘save face’.

Bloomberg looks tough at last – but only took the steps to ensure that he appeared to do something about the situation while providing the OWS people a respectable way to go indoors during the cold weather. This is just a win-win intermission.

2012 will be the main event.

      @Poor

Their usefulness to the progressives was waning, and public opinion of them was reaching lows you associate with, say, cockroaches. They are being evacuated, simultaneously, much in the same way they showed up simultaneously. This is a tightly organized top down dictated event, even if the rank and file don’t realize it (alas, intelligence and independent thinking is lacking amongst most of them). Three guesses at who is at the “top”, and the first two don’t count.

The park is still closed and I’m 1000 miles away. Again, notice that Buck takes pictures of the park after it was cleared; like all media, they were kept a block and a half away during the eviction itself. Media blackout + riot police = your idea of freedom? Might want to head to the ME; your name makes me think you’d fit riiiiiiight in.

Its about time the government stopped acting like they were dealing with children throwing a temper tantrum. It seems they learned they could not recreate their failed miniture society without some issues. These issues have already been worked out for them in the greatest republic that ever will be. America with all its warts managed to hold at bay and even conquer most communicable diseases, we managed to raise the living standard for most people in this country all while the rich got richer. We managed to police our cities, counties, states and federal government to try and make this country where a free citizen could go freely without fear from bandits and even the government itself so they could pursue a life or liberty and happiness. If they want to keep atleast these small achievements they have got to get out of the wagon and start pushing instead of rising along for free.

Did you ever think that NYPD deliberately went in without a heavy media presence and at an unusual hour because the last time this was tried the unions bused in a few thousand brownshirts to make the situation more volatile? Typical Avenger; sees liberals and sees red. Er, brown. Freedom of the press? I know you don’t like that it can cut both ways, but it never stops amazing me that you’re fine for stripping freedoms just because you hate the people on the receiving ends. It’s this hypocritical view that makes me disagree with so many people on this board; we see the same ends, but I find that the means (if they require things like midnight raids, media blackouts, and violence) are too extreme.

OWS-NY should have been disassembled weeks ago. The police should have approached, said “All of you are under arrest for trespassing if you do not leave now,” and hauled them out in cuffs for the cameras. Show the people that the NYPD are ones on the right side of the law and will uphold it.

Instead we get a response that you’d see in a third-world country. The end goal was good, but the way they did it was not.

Yes..LOCKED..“should have”…blah blah. Being the liberal buffoon you are, “should have” is not part of the reality today. The reality is Bloomberg played footsies with the stinky OWSers for as long as he could (like a good democrat) and now his city is facing fiscal and health costs because of it. Business is hurting in a city already strapped for revenue. When previous announcements were made that the area would be cleared, the unions (god bless their little red t-shirts, right LOCKED?) bused in a few thousand thugs to make a more hostile environment. Seeing the way Quan handled things in Oakland, Bloomberg wasn‘t going to continue on the path he’d chosen. He also has the best riot control police in the world in his city. So at an unusual hour the police go in, exploiting an element of surprise, thus robbing the unions of their usual weapon and keeping the complicit media on the backfoot because let’s be honest…the OWSers want a confrontation they can manipulate for public sympathy and the media has proven to be a very cooperative element. No freedoms were breached LOCKED…stop pouting. We are a nation of laws and laws must be upheld. Health and privacy issues affect ALL New Yorkers. You don’t waive them to play footsies with anarchists, leftists and idiots that your party believes are an anwser to the tea parties..eventually reality has to be addressed. So just keep your “should have’s” LOCKED…it’s reality that matters.

You apparently disagree with the idea that they should be arrested for breaking specific laws, rather than raided in the middle of the night while the media (including theblaze) is held back and can’t record. That right there shows me where you stand: full-on totalitarian. I disagree with you, but then again, I’m a conservative; I don’t mind you having the freedom to hate freedom.

Actually Zucotti Park is privately owned and maintained.

Zuccotti Park, formerly called Liberty Plaza Park, is a 33,000-square-foot (3,100 m2) publicly accessible park in Lower Manhattan, New York City, privately owned by Brookfield Properties.**** The park was created in 1968 by United States Steel, after the property owners negotiated its creation with city officials, and named Liberty Plaza Park and situated beside One Liberty Plaza. It is located between Broadway, Trinity Place, Liberty Street and Cedar Street. The park’s northwest corner is across the street from Four World Trade Center. It has been popular with local tourists and financial workers.

They have been criminal trespassers on PRIVATE property since day one and were NEVER lawfully assembled to protest for redress. They were and always will be “idiiots”. Peace

Wildbill is half right. The part is privately owned, but the building of it brought an agreement with the city that it would be used for public space and open 24/7. The owners can set their own rules on what is and is not allowed (ie, tents), but they are not allowed to close the park just because they don’t like whoever is in it.

The police were never set up to work for “us”. They are a creation of the 19th century and meant to protect specific powered interests, none of them ours.

Sheriffs work for us and are beholden to us, and have been since their invention in Anglo Saxon England (Shire Reeves, where a Shire was an area of land and the Reeves were charged with reporting matters to be taken before the village council for legal consideration, with the Shire Reeve being the head honco for the other Reeves who reported to him).

It’s no mistake that the push was on early to blur the distinction between these two groups, but they haven’t done so quite yet. We still elect Sheriffs after all, but have no say in who is in charge of the police.

Again I ask, when will the taxpayers ask for reimbursement? Tea Parties had to pay for permits, sanitation, and security for all events. If we were even granted a permit. We soon found out about the “no free speech zones in America”.

So again I find out the law applies to everyone here today except them. This mess should have been dealt with the first night. If you want to protest, fine but all laws should be applied equally.

The occupy members cleaned up the park on a regular basis. It wasn’t perfect but when is an occupation tidy and perfect?
You know what hurts small businesses? A crashed economy due to Wall Street gambling.

If OWSers want to live like 3rd world citizens there are plenty of places for each to move to. Bon voyage & good luck. I can’t imagine why anyone would make the choice to live the way they have. Low self esteem and lack of respect for their life and the lives of others? Most people I know try to better themselves not step back in time. First amendent rights they cry. We all have 1st amendment rights. Most of us choose to exercise these rights peacefully and not break laws and infringe on other peoples rights.

You have a picture of Jesus for your profile picture and you support the crackdown on peaceful protest? Do you see how big of hypocrite you are or are you just that blind? I‘ve read the bible and I don’t remember the passage that said go forth my children and ridicule every dissenting opinion.
