Border Czar: America Needs a ‘21st Century Border’ for a ‘New Era’

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Alan Bersin says the United States needs to undertake a “paradigm shift” in how citizens view the U.S.-Mexico border.
In a recent speech at the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., Bersin claimed that this perception shift needs to include “a road to citizenship” for immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally. Additionally, Bersin said that Americans said the “best way” to secure the southern border is to allow Mexicans to work in the United States in the future in what he called “a legitimate labor market” between the U.S. and Mexico.
According to CNSNews.com, a CBP spokesperson has since clarified Bersin’s remarks, saying the U.S. needs “a temporary worker program” that is “conducive to our labor needs.”
Bersin has been on the job since March, appointed by President Barack Obama after having formerly served as secretary of education for the state of California and as chairman of the San Diego Regional Airport Authority.
During his remarks to the Migration Policy Institute, the border “czar” recalled negotiations between President Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon in May in which the two leaders “articulated the vision for this new era — the creation of a 21st Century border, one that enhances our security and mutual economic competitiveness in an increasingly globalized world.”
“Underlying this new vision is a paradigm shift—a change in how people view the border,” Bersin said.
“Historically, governments have approached border management as, essentially, ‘holding the line.’ But the border isn’t an isolated place disconnected from the interiors of the United States and Mexico. What we do at the border has effects that are felt far away from the jurisdictional line—especially in an era of international trade and global supply chains. Although policing the line will remain a key element of any border management approach, we must shift our thinking and take a more holistic view of border management, one that is based on securing the flows of trade and travel.”
Bersin dismissed ideas of “mass amnesty” and “mass deportations,“ insisting the country needs to implement a ”long road to citizenship” for illegal aliens.

Posted on October 18, 2010 at 7:00pmIf the 21st Century border solution includes a good old (all centuries to present) fashioned wall then I agree completely.
Note the timing and remember this was obviously scripted and planned.
And who said that a border solution wouldn’t have a guest worker program? I think most people would agree. So please spare me the attempt to paint anyone opposed to this mamsy pamsy (Liberal) approach to securing our Southern Border as isolationists and unwilling to discuss and put put in place a fair system that benefits EVERYONE – including those that come here for work.
We just want to close the whole thing down first….and THEN worry about the details.

Enforce the laws that we have now, then we can talk about all this other stuff. A guest worker program? yes that’s a nice thought, but I think just maybe the people that apply after it is actually enacted have first priority over the people that came across in the middle of the night, build the fence, no back door Amnesty, and no special exemptions for law breakers. oh and by the way, entering the USA without permission to do so is breaking laws.

Illegals can go back home.
The legal immigrants where I volunteer have a party for all who pass their tests and become fully naturalized citizens each year. It is great, they call it their second birthday.
I do understand this though – In America respect OUR culture, be tolerant of AMERICAN ways and AMERICAN heritage for we are AMERICANS first and always in my book.

Yes sadly there are some jobs that American’s refuse to do, however, for many years illegals have been welcoming themselves to our country, and taking those jobs. Now that as a country we no longer manufacture anything, the new construction industry is in the toilet, why do we need more people to do jobs that do not exist?

Posted on October 18, 2010 at 6:21pmThe governors of AZ and TX should call for citizen volunteers from all across the USA to come with their arms and then deputize them for service on the border. I’d bet thousands would show up if asked. I know I would. No need to even pay me. Just provide me with food, shelter and ammunition while I serve. We can seal the border! The Minutemen proved it just a few years back on a 20 something mile stretch. All we need is more manpower and the will of the people behind them.
It may be the Fed’s responsibility to set “immigration policy” but the border state’s have the right and DUTY to protect their citizens and, since the fed’s are failing their duty, SEAL THE BORDER of their state to protect their citizenry.

Making it easier for illegals to register once here and find work will only multiply the problems at the border – the difficulties in finding work and the threat of deportation are the only issues keeping many people from trying to get here illegally!
I thought this guy was the head of Customs and Border Protection. Look dumba$$, your job is to secure the border by any means neccessary, not determine the best path towards immigration. Why should this be a suprise to anyone.
Why not try a novel (to Washington) idea – close the entire blasted border with fences, guards, and for the countries that wont stop their own people fleeing into ours – cut off trade into and out of our nation for a time.
Tell them we will reopen the trade part when they get their own act togeather.
For the drug cartels there is a simple solution in two parts…
1. Bounties on their heads so large that someone will take them out.
2. Send in the Delta Force for precision strikes to take out or bring them back.
Enough cat footing around – get the job done.

Secure the border, send the Army to kill the cartel occupying our territory.
The Czar is planting an EVIL SEED of a paradigm shift re: “border attitude”. Sure, shifting from a Republic to Socialism is a paradigm shift too. We don’t want that one either!!!
Consider this: Secure border. Increased immigration quota (thru the right door) from Mexico (if the workers are needed). Crooks and government dependent illegal immigrants deported. Productive illegals are given permanent residence if they learn the language, BUT (like felon/citizens) do NOT have the right to vote, ever. That takes it away from politics. We are HUMANE in letting the family stay, but there is a price. They live in paradise, but since they cheated, they can’t vote. If they want to vote, they can go home, immigrate legally, become a citizen, and vote. No problem.

Posted on October 18, 2010 at 9:23pmThe solution is simple. The only reason Mexicans cross the border is to find work. If American businesses stop hiring them illegal immigration from Mexico will stop. Why do the hire them? Because they’ll work for less than white people. It’s not discrimination – any company would hire a white guy to pick grapes for $5 an hour as quickly as a Mexican. But white guys won’t work for $5 an hour. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. BUT when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their RIGHT, it is their DUTY, to THROW OFF such Government, and to provide NEW Guards for their future security.”

It is estimated to be $1.5 billion. Part 2, we further reduce the aid by the cost of policing, jailing and deporting illegals. Part 3, as part of Rep. Report Post »I will agree that one of the strongest reasons that illegal immigrants cross the border is to find work.
“Why do the hire them? Because they’ll work for less than white people. It’s not discrimination – any company would hire a white guy to pick grapes for $5 an hour as quickly as a Mexican. But white guys won’t work for $5 an hour.”
First and foremost, I recommend removing the word “White” and replacing it with American. Secondly, you may want to review the minimum wage laws. The only way around paying an American that low is tax evasion…? Anyhow, I read that the offers are more along the lines of $10/hr. But the problem becomes that these jobs are seasonal. And in this progressively progressive welfare state, these Americans are always faced with jeopardizing their unemployment income that has the potential to last 99 weeks for a seasonal stint. It wouldn’t make sense. (Unless they stopped receiving unemployment).
Secondly, it goes beyond just the willingness to work for cheap. It also has to do with control. What immigrant is going to complain to OSHA about unfair working conditions/hours?
Immigrant labor is a euphemism for slave labor.
There are more reasons illegals make their way into the US. Some is for drug/people trafficking and other explicitly illegal activities (including kidnapping and murder). Others are running away from more than poverty. You MAY have noticed the turmoil going on in that country.
Also, Mexicans are not being demonized, they aren’t even the issue. The issue is ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. You seem to have a slight problem with generalizing. Most on these boards just do not want to see these law-breakers be rewarded or… absolved of the crime they are committing which contributes to the economic problems of a nation that can barely support itself.
“Don’t pretend this is anything but pure capitalism…” Sorry, but slave labor doesn’t quite fit into the capitalist equation (nor does it in our Republic). Slavery was part of a failed economic policy employed so long ago in this country in the South when Blacks and Native Americans were the heart of slave labor. Capitalism thrives when the middleclass thrives. You cannot have a middleclass without a working class which is undermined when you have slave labor.
Your pinning the blame on employers who hire illegals for the illegal immigration is flawed. While it does contribute to the illegal immigration, if any of these illegals had any respect for our laws, no amount of illegal-alien hiring could take place as they would not be in our country out of respect for our laws. We may both agree, however that any and all employers who hire illegals (AND I AM TALKING THE BLATANT ONES… the ones that obviously made no attempt to determine if the person they were hiring is legally hirable) should be punished severely.
Side question, JZS… how do you feel about Capitalism?

Anybody who takes money from this monster has sold his soul and our government to HELL ! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE LIGHT OF DAY! For only TRUTH and the light of day is what this country DESERVES. Democrats seemed to have been infected by this DEADLY parasite and his minions. This country will NOT rest until SOROS is in prison orange and handcuffs standing in front of a military tribunal in Guantomino Bay, Cuba
If you have any complaints about Mr. SOROS here are the names and addresses, maybe you can send them a line.
