UPDATE from the AP:
NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) — The leader of a union representing Border Patrol agents says an agent who was fatally shot north of the Arizona-Mexico border was trying to catch bandits who target illegal immigrants for robbery.
National Border Patrol Council President T.J. Bonner says 40-year-old Brian A. Terry was waiting with three other agents in a remote area north of Nogales on Tuesday when a gun battle with the bandits began.
Border Patrol spokesman Eric Cantu would not confirm Bonner’s account, but noted that authorities have four suspects in custody and are searching for a fifth.
The FBI is investigating the shooting and didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday morning.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The U.S. Border Patrol says that one of its agents has been shot to death after a confrontation in southern Arizona.
Border Patrol spokesman Eric Cantu confirmed the agent’s death to The Associated Press on Wednesday morning.
Cantu tells KTVK-TV the agent is identified as Brian Terry. Cantu says Terry was shot and killed after confronting several suspects near Rio Rico north of Nogales.
At least four people are in custody and possibly one more remains at large.
Cantu says the FBI and local sheriff’s officials are investigating.

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 10:45amThese people have proven that they will get drugs into the U.S. anyway possible. Air drops, boats, submarines (yes submarines), tunnels, cars, trucks, etc….. The only way to shut down the drug traffic is legalize drugs. I only drink alcohol, and drink caffeine, but I don‘t believe anyone has the moral authority to tell others what they can and can’t do in the privacy of their own home as long as they don’t harm others. As long as drugs are illegal their will be cartels, and drug dealers. Imagine a world where drugs are legal but people are arrested if they are disorderly in public. A world with no drug dealers, cartels, and all of the murders that accompany these groups. Just as most people would not by homemade cigarettes, or homemade alcohol from someone standing on a street corner, the same will be true with drugs. They will be cheaper and 100 times more sanitary to buy them in a liquor store, drug store, or wherever they might be sold. This statement should make you think “you can buy drugs quicker in any neighborhood in America than you could buy a six pack of beer. drugs are everywhere around us, only they are controlled by criminals”. I would love to have people that don’t want drugs legalized to respond.

Posted on December 15, 2010 at 11:22amI don’t know where you live, but come to Buffalo some time and see what crack, meth, and heroin do to people. All become seriously addictive in a short time, unlike how use of alcohol doesn’t necessarily and inevitably make everyone who drinks an alcoholic.
Marijuana is different from the herder drugs, in that it’s not addictive in the physical sense like cocaine, et. al. The hard stuff, as well as alcohol in alcoholics, chemically rewires the brain permanently, causing addiction. Some people can get clean, but they’ll never be free of risk of returning to use. The same with an alcoholic–people sober for years can pick up again and one day drink themselves to death. Again, not every drinker becomes an alcoholic. No pot user, far as I know, becomes hooked like on crack.
I can see legalizing marijuana (though tokers develop chronic bronchitis like among cigarette smokers). But there are three other problems that come along with legalization of even grass. One, that slippery-slope that will be inevitable. If pot, many will say, why not something else? Why not LSD, though it can cause hallucinations that might be fatal to the user? Why not PCP, too, though it carries high risk of violent behavior?
Second, the health risks. If tobacco is bad, how much worse is long-term drug use? Coke is known to basically dissolve the nasal passages, requiring reconstructive surgeries. And that damage is permanent. Long term injection of heroin collapses blood vessels, so addicts inevitably need to keep finding new sites on their bodies where they can inject. Plus that risk of overdose of the hard stuff. If tobacco is ‘straining’ the health care system, imagine how much worse it can get.
Last, drunk driving kills thousands every year. Do we want to add to those numbers and that problem?
Of course there comes matters of regulation, taxation, and such. But they’re small compared to the other dangers.
I agree with tighter limits on government, and have no problem if someone likes his pot in the privacy of his own home. But I can’t seem to see where most people would agree to a stopping point, where the population as a whole would say “this is as far as it goes, and never beyond.”

Alcohol ruins many lives. I guess we should make it illegal? Oh thats right we tried that and it doesn’t work, people still got it. Just like they still get heroin.Heroin doesn’t jump off of trees and inject itself into peoples arms. People inject it into themselves. People should have the freedom to inject heroin, smoke crack, snort Drain-O, whatever they want. You believe that you have the moral authority to tell people that you will not allow them to do what they want to? You believe you are wise and all knowing and should be able to tell people what they can and can’t do in their homes? After Obamacare passes do you want some all knowing, wise person to tell you what foods you can and can’t consume in your home? Do you want the government telling you you can’t drink coffee because it is an “epidemic” that harms people? No. You don’t want people telling you how to run your life. You don’t want people limiting your freedoms. But you want to limit other peoples freedoms. Sir, Can I have a beer? Do you think beer will ruin my life? How many beers can I have per week?

I consider it more about society as a whole, and just how far things can be taken before society itself suffers. This is a matter of ideas to me, not absolutism or morality. Just ideas in a discussion you invited.
There’s no comparison between use of coffee and use of crack. And no one should try taking my coffee, cigarettes, and vodka (legality not being a factor here), either. No one except a psycho has ever killed for a smoke, or cup of Joe, or a beer. But addicts have killed; addicts have sold their kids’ Christmas presents for a bag of crack.
Lives have been ruined for alcohol, as you said, and for hard drugs. Legalizing those drugs will add to the problem; they are invariably addictive. Alcohol is not. Legalization may get rid of the cartels, but in exchange for what? Legal drugs might be cheaper, but cheap drugs don’t prevent addiction. The upside for a user is he can afford more bang for the buck. But eventually he’ll run out of those bucks and do what users today do to get a fix.
Laws aren’t always about morality. Usually, they’re in place for the intended good of society. And please–let’s not quibble about the meaning of the term. You know what I mean here. Legalization runs risk of more wide-spread use, and we have enough problems already. My questions, in this exchange with you, involve the cost/benefit trade-off. Can we get by with legalizing only pot? Or should we just dump all the restrictions and let chips fall where they may? At what point does my liberty begin to impose on others, and exceed government’s mandate to protect others from me?
I love my liberty, and I’m not going to let go of it easily. I have morals, and don’t seek to impose them on others. But, by my personal morality and my freedom, I have responsibility, too, which is just as important to me. The harder drugs wipe out a person’s morality and sense of responsibility–I see it all the time here. People are broke because of the addictive drugs they started using, and legalization runs high risk of adding to an already huge problem.
Once something is allowed, it becomes a norm. People will follow the norm. I can imagine a world without cartels, just as I can imagine a nation more full of addicts than what we have now. And addicts will inevitably do what all addicts do while hooked (legality not a factor).
Like I said, I’m fine with people smoking a little grass in private. I simply pointed out possible problems with full legalization of all drugs, as you appear to desire. I’m fine with your view; I simply answered your initial request for response.

Let these lawmakers meet out in the desert to discuss policies for a few months. Let them camp out every evening and see how safe it really is, since they obviously believe our border is already secure. Allow them to bring thier families along as well. Thier children have nothing to fear, I’m sure.
I’m done pleading for a secure fence and troops stationed along the border. It will not happen until members of congress feel that same fear as residents, American citizens they are sworn to protect, do in border areas. No politician is willing to stand up and alienate (no pun intended) latino groups. Votes are worth far more than lives.

This does not make any logical sense. In fact, I have yet to see this union stick up for anything that has happened on the borders. I bet the members are paying a pretty penny for this worthless representation so perhaps they should have an awakening.

This Spec-ops BP was a highly trained, experienced individual. Just speaks to the danger down there. Do these fallen get an honor guard or the tribute that they deserve as well as any of the brave serving their country,in a nearly futile attempt to protect our borders. God only knows how many of the future terrorists are already firmly rooted WITHIN our borders,planning countless acts of terror. Probably have training camps set up in that restricted (to american citizens) park land in AZ.IMO this is one of the most vital ,if not the leading HS issue facing our nation. I agree with whoever suggested rounding these criminals up and sending them on a one way junket straight to Afganistan..Heck they sure don’t need any weapons training!! They can “DREAM ACT” muse all they like over there! BTW does anyone know ,have the guardsmen that “Big Sis, Napolitano been pulled back yet? Even though the numbers weren’t high enough, any reinforcements help. Prayers sent to all our BP hero’s fighting insurmountable odds and to this fallen ones family, words probably don;t help much,now that their Christmas holiday and beyond the new year are darkened .
