SAN ANTONIO (AP) — U.S. Border Patrol agents opened fire Saturday along the Rio Grande on the Texas-Mexico border after being pelted by rocks and having a gunman point a weapon in their direction on the Mexican side of the river, an agency spokesman said.
Spokesman Henry Mendiola said no Border Patrol agents were injured in the incident Saturday near Brownsville. He did not know if anyone else was hurt. He said the Mexican government had been notified and was responding to the area. The FBI also was investigating.
The Border Patrol released little details about the morning gunfire, including what the suspects were doing on the river.
Mendiola said several people had been taken into custody but that he could not provide details about the suspects or charges they face.
One of the agents started shooting after being “unable to take cover” when rocks were thrown, while the other opened fire after seeing a suspect on the Mexican side of the river pointing a gun at him, Mendiola said.
He added that as rocks were thrown, “at least one of the agents feared for his life.”
U.S. lawmen opening fire along the Texas border is not routine, but Saturday was the latest in several such incidents in the past year.
Border Patrol agents seizing 4,000 pounds of marijuana in March near Roma got into a shootout with drug smugglers. In that incident, it also was not known whether anyone on the Mexican side had been hit.
Last summer, authorities said Border Patrol agents and Rangers with the Texas Department of Public Safety exchanged about 300 rounds of gunfire with suspected drug smugglers. Officials said the suspects threw rocks at U.S. lawmen in that incident, too.
In 2010, a Border Patrol agent in El Paso shot and killed a 15-year-old Mexican boy across the Rio Grande. Investigators say the agent fired after being attacked by people throwing rocks.

I’ll await on tenterhooks the replies that inform me how rocks kill highly armored people daily.
That said, this border thing is becoming unmanageable. Either the supposed “war on” drugs gets called off, or we drown in a sea of crime. Unfortunately, many of my supposedly “conservative” brethren would rather go down with the ship than follow the Constitution on this one.

My 3 yr old and his 4 1/2 yr old cousin decided to throw bricks at each other at grandpa’s house. (Many rocks are bigger and more dangerous.) My sister was watching them (teen) and thought it was funny until the older cousin scalped my son with a rock. He bled like he would die, but when ice and cutting his hair back made the wound visible, he was literally scalped, the entire top of his head lost all layers of skin, bleeding nearly stopped a trip to ER returned, (”Nothing left for stitches! If it‘d been a few centimeters lower he’d be dead, keep ice on it!”) and we were given a bill and sent home.

In the movies it works like this. In reality when you are getting shot at your first instinct is, oh crap, I’m getting shot at, and you crawl into as tight as a space as possible behind cover especially if the rounds are pinging and kicking up dust within immediate proximity. Then you try and throw as many rounds back as you can while trying to hit the target. But what do I know…?

I’ve hit man sized silhouettes 5 of 6 tries with a revolver at 100 yards. Silhouette target competitors hit and knock over ram sized steel targets at 200 yards. With a little practice, I’ve held 2 inch groups with a 45 at 25 yards. Considering the accuracy and higher velocity of the issue sidearm (Provided they are still issuing 40 S&W Sig Sauers) accuracy to 50 yards isn’t impossible. Under fire, a 13 round magazine should render at least a few hits on target.

Posted on July 8, 2012 at 10:08amWhat we really need is to do what Sheriff Babeu did in the Yuma sector when he was in the military. They stationed soldiers in pairs every quarter of a mile. Guess what happened? Attempted border crossings dropped to about 4% of what it had been. And that small of a number can all be caught. We need to put a few divisions down on the southern border. We already use the Navy and Coast Guard to interdict drugs and people coming by sea. Why not put the army on the border? It is a war.
