‘Botched Story’: Alabama Meteorologist Calls Out Diane Sawyer on Inaccurate Report

On Monday, ABC’s “World News” host Diane Sawyer reported on the devastating tornadoes that tore through Alabama, stating that the residents had “no warning.”
The local ABC 33/40 affiliate meteorologist James Spann is setting Sawyer straight. He says she got it wrong.
First, check out this clip of Sawyer’s report on the tornadoes Monday evening:
Spann writes on the ABC 33/40 website:
Meteorologist James Spann
NO WARNING? Get a clue. This event was forecast days in advance, and the average lead times for the entire event were 20 to 30 minutes. That is plenty of time to get to a safe place.
We were on the air non-stop from about midnight until almost 8 a.m. It has been our policy at ABC 33/40 to provide long form, uninterrupted severe weather coverage if ANY county in our market goes under a tornado warning.
Spann then goes on to record all the warnings residents were given, ending with this address to Sawyer:
So… Diane… the challenge I made to you last night on WeatherBrains stands. Let’s debate. My email is jspann@abc3340.com
I am not holding my breath.
Then, the next day, ABC News had more on the twisters. Sawyer leads the introduction to this report saying they wanted to know “why so many people knew what to do”. Watch the clip:
As you can see, Sawyer makes no clarification for her “no warning” statement the day before. In the clip, Media Bistro points out, there is coverage of how the warnings actually came early, giving residents enough time to take action. A soundbite from Spann about how he believes each home should have a NOAA radio as a warning system is also included in the report.
Spann wrote in another blog post that while he is “thankful to ABC News for producing the story”, he didn’t miss the fact that there was “no apology or mention of the botched story”.

Posted on January 26, 2012 at 1:33amYou got that right UF…I have 5 kids in the house, so needless to say I was up all night with James Spann. He and his team do a great job, there are never commercial breaks as long as any county is on warning. They call out all the names of the towns in the projected path of the storm. They instruct people constantly on what to do. I started watching at midnight and the torndao past my area around 2:30am and we were ready far in advance. If it weren’t for James Spann and other news cast down here, many, many more would have died on April 27th. They had the tornado live on his program until the camera’s went blank. Diane owes James and all our local news teams and meterorologist a huge apology, they are responsible for saving an untold number of lives every year. She should be ashamed of herself for reporting such crap.

Few of us would have know of this incident had it not for some poor bloke at the blaze monitoring this crap; I stopped watching the “Cs” (ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN) YEARS ago. The alarms went off, the kids woke up, got in our safe area and turned on ABC33/40 because we KNEW he would be there, giving us all the information we need to know. He is a good man and she needs to do her research on the countless lives he has saved over the years (especially one day in April). This man is no idiot. He knows his stuff and whatever they are paying him isn’t enough. He CARES about the people of Alabama and does everything he can to warn everyone. April 27 he was on air BEGGING people to call others who were impacted by prior tornado’s that day and letting them know to take cover. The other night he was on again informing us not to just depend on the tornado alarm systems. He goes above and beyond and works very long hours. More than we can say for Ms. Sawyer. We are fortunate to have him and he deserves an apology!

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 5:06amGodfather, Diane Sawyer is on a major news network. People depend on the truth being told. If it was a mistake in research we have our first problem. How hard would it have been to see the coverage prior to the storm? This is not getting government secrets here – obviously their own local stations could have given them this information. Before a major news outlet puts out information, I would hope they vetted it – this wasn’t. To not then correct the mistake implies (fairly or unfairly) that this was a deliberate misrepresentation. As far as the Blaze, it puts together stories from other outlets (radio, MSM, news articles) – some I find interesting and others I don’t. I’m not anal about spelling as long as I get the gist of the story. I find the posts that whine about the spelling to be obnoxious at best. The story of the school crossing being misspelled was more about the fact of our education system – not someone typing quickly to get a story out. If the cite offends you because of misspelling, move on and stop posting. To Misterpickles, you got everything wrong and are just parroting the mantra of the left that Fox lies – proof of that sir is not repeating it over and over hoping no one will watch and disprove your repetitions. The newscaster didn’t misspeak, she misrepresented (if she misspoke, it would have been corrected) and it wasn’t a weather lady that took offense, it was a male meteorologist that was merely trying to set the record straight.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, does the Blaze ever publicly announce its mistakes? No it does not. There are factual inaccuracies all over Blaze articles that miraculously change when a comment notes the problem. Then, this author has the nerve to call out Diane Sawyer for the exact same thing. Furthermore, the Blaze had an article about the misspelling of the street sign when there are typos all over Blaze articles. Blaze authors and editors, get it through your heads, you need to cite check and proof read your articles. Otherwise, stop pointing out others’ mistakes.

She doesn’t gather the news nor does she confirm the authenticity of what she says, just reads it and trys to look concerned. The biggest problem is that people actually believe her. The NEWS organization of ABC should be ashamed that they can’t get it right. They have discredited themselves and it shows in their ratings. I know I stopped watching ABC, CBS and NBC along time ago. Needless to say I don’t watch MSNBC or their ilk either. I prefer news outlets such as The Blaze, Newsmax, The Drudge and such. You get a better rounded view and certainly more accurate. He provided us with an example of what a broadcast meteorologist was supposed to concentrate, the safety of his/her viewers.
Mr. Spann is an iconic broadcast meteorology figure. His telecasts have saved lives. Northern Alabama and Mississippi are an area that has seen many deaths to severe weather over the years. That location typically can be a focal point of multiple weather system collisions, increasing the chance of severe weather.
James’ work in the media has set an example for other television meteorologists to be followed.

At some point people have to take personal responsibility. The problem isn’t getting enough warning as much as it is not taking each warning seriously.
Report Post »Girard1974
Posted on January 26, 2012 at 2:35pmWhat about those who weren’t watching TV? What is the point of your question? Certainly in Alabama and other states in “Tornado Alley” there are other forms of alert that don’t rely entirely on television. There’s radio of course and then those blaring sirens that even the smallest of communities have to provide as much warning as possible when a devastating tornado is imminent. Finally, there’s the vehicles that travel up and down as many streets as possible with a human being using a loudspeaker warning of the danger to come.
All of these things help people when they’re about to be hit. But beforehand there are many other things that they do to prepare: knowing the evacuation routes if they choose to leave; knowing where the safest part(s) of their homes are if they choose to remain; extra food and supplies to last until help arrives, etc., etc.
But the Diane Sawyers of the world actually believe people who live outside the confines of NYC are just plain stupid with absolutely no idea what to do; that unless they tune-in to ABC, NBC or CBS they will most certainly die in record numbers. But even more important to Sawyer et al, is the aftermath – only the Feds (FEMA) can save them from starvation or exposure to the elements! No, these people understand full well that with their own good common sense and faith in things greater than government and/or ABC they will survive just fine. But you’ll never get Diane Sawyer to believe that for one second. Get over
