Botched Visa Lottery Dashes Hopes of 22,000 Would-Be U.S. Immigrants

According to the Daily Mail:
Roughly 22,000 would-be immigrants to the U.S. have had their hopes shattered.
That‘s because a computer glitch corrupted the State Department’s annual worldwide lottery for 50,000 U.S. immigrant visas and the results will be scratched, the Obama administration revealed today.
It’s a devastating blow to 22,000 would-be immigrants who were notified this year that they had won a chance to come and live legally in the United States.
Nearly 15 million people had entered the 2012 lottery hoping to win one of 50,000 U.S. immigrant visas available under a wild-card program for people who otherwise would have little hope of getting a coveted U.S. visa.
The software glitch caused what is supposed to be a random drawing to select 90 per cent of winners from entries submitted on only the first two days of the 30-day registration period that ended Nov. 3, the department said on Friday.
The Washington Post adds that:
The State Department will hold a new lottery with the existing pool of applicants and announce the winners by July 15, Donahue said. Applicants do not need to re-enter to be eligible, and no new applications will be accepted.
Winners of the erroneous lottery who aren’t selected again will be able to reapply next fall or in subsequent years, officials said.
David T. Donahue, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, appeared in a recorded video message to address the error:
And the following statement was posted to the State Department web site (along with an FAQ about the situation):
We regret to inform you that, due to a computer programming problem, the results of the 2012 Diversity Lottery that were previously posted on this website have been voided. They were not valid and were posted in error. The results were not valid because they did not represent a fair, random selection of entrants, as required by U.S. law.
If you checked this website during the first week in May and found a notice that you had been selected for further processing or a notice that you had not been selected, that notice has been rescinded and is no longer valid.
A new selection process will be conducted based on the original entries for the 2012 program.
If you submitted a qualified entry from October 5, 2010 to November 3, 2010, your entry remains with us. It will be included in the new selection lottery. Your confirmation number to check results on this website is still valid.
We expect the results of the new selection process to be available on this website on or about July 15, 2011.
We regret any inconvenience this might have caused.

They got citizenship in the proper way. I posted the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States on fb and one of my friends told me she was getting her citizenship the next day, she thanked me for posting it. I trust and respect those that love and respect the US and being part of it. The illegals don’t love, don’t trust, don’t respect us. La Raza is a terrorist organization that all of us donate to. Why? Some people don’t have opportunities in their countries. America is their “Shinning city on a hill” and they don’t want to tarnish that beacon of hope by breaking laws. But when hope is fading for them and then this (see article) happens, some may feel emboldened to get to that shinning city any possible way.
This is one of the major problems causing illegal immigration. To solve the issue our government must do three things: 1.) secure the border; 2.) Those who came here illegally need to be encouraged (nudged) to go back to their country of origin and get to the back of the line; and finally 3.) We must make legal immigration easier, and accessable to more people, and not let garbage like this happen to possibly great contributers.

America are given special treatment. Read it for yourself: “two million applicants for 50,000 slots.” What is more fair than a lottery? Hopefully there is some screening of those entered in the drawing. What other choice is there? Another bureaucracy to examine all two million applications – annually? 99.999996% of us are or come from immigrants.
We have to have a systematic, legal way to allow decent folks to join our ranks. At the same time I believe our borders must be secured against illegal aliens. If it were up to me the treatment of illegals would be much harsher. Much more! End ALL government benefits to ALL illegals, that means men, women & children. Enforce every law already on the books. You or I can go to jail for shoplifting but someone can “invade” our country and is ignored.
Several states are considering allowing illegals to be eligible for in-state college tuition. My son had to join the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army to get help with the cost of a college education. But if you sneak in to the country and promise to be good everything is just fine? Something is VERY VERY WRONG with this picture.

This ‘lottery ’ is for Diversity Visa.
Its not H1 or L category visa, which is for highly qualified foreign professionals/managers.
This visa has been used to socially engineer America’s racial landscape , over the years and to simultaneously bring in people who would otherwise never be able to stand FBI scrutiny .
Its just like giving political asylum to jihadies from all over the world, which is practically what the US Visa policy is nowadays, with no oversight at all.
Like all liberal/progressive programs, it started with very lofty ideals of bringing ‘diversity’ to America.

We do not need more Lazy Welfare recipients,
a “Lottery” cant weed people out.
Use to you have to have a Sponsor, a Job, or some kind of support structure IN PLACE in this country before you could immigrate. The only exception to that was Asylum.
Just bringing people here because they want to come here is not the way.

The mayor and the townspeople couldn’t get rid the pigeons, and the entire town was full of pigeon droppings. The people of the town couldn’t walk on the sidewalks or drive on the roads. It was costing a fortune to try to keep the streets and sidewalks clean.
One day a man came to Town Hall and offered the Mayor a proposition. “I will rid your beautiful town of its plague of pigeons without cost to the city. But, you must promise not to ask me any questions – or you can pay me ten million dollars and ask me only one question.” The Mayor considered the offer briefly, and accepted the free proposition.
The next day the man showed up carrying a small box, and then climbed to the top of Town Hall and opened the small box, releasing a blue pigeon. The blue pigeon circled in the air and flew up into the bright sky. All the pigeons in the town saw the blue pigeon circling above, and flew up to follow him. Without any notice, the blue pigeon headed south out of town, with all the other pigeons following.
Three days later, the blue pigeon returned all alone, with no other pigeons following. To the astonishment of the townspeople and the Mayer, the man and the blue pigeon had performed a wonderful and miraculous feat to rid the town of the plague of pigeons. If I read this correctly, it’s to allow 50,000 visas to those with no skills, no education, no money, no English, no talent, no drive, no job, no desire……..other than to mooch off me. (and maybe some terrorists)

Lying about what???? And what does “backups” have to do with bad randomization? They voided the results, they did not lose them. They were voided because they claim it was not random enough, which is subjective anyway, but from what they have stated is sounds like the program somehow weighted the selection based on application date, which they did not want to have happen.
Further even if it was some kind of data corruption, this does happen all of the time, even if governments and big companies. Data recovery is a HUGE business for a reason, Data can become corrupted and if companies use automated process’s for backups the backups can also become corrupted, In fact data corruption is a bigger risk that most people realize, most companies protect themselves from Physical failure, but many do not put data validation in as part of the backup scheme so any corruption from an array failure can and will spread to backups….
Anyway that is way way off topic
