Boy Scout Found Alive: 12-Year-Old Built Shelter to Make it Through the Night in Utah Forest

A 12-year-old Boy Scout who disappeared while hiking deep in the Utah wilderness Friday has been found. Fellow scouts became separated from Jared Ropelato at around noon Friday near Daggett Lake in Ashley National Forest.
Twenty searchers failed to find Jared Ropelato Friday and hoped that the boy, who was last seen wearing just a shirt and jeans, was able to find some sort of shelter to make it through the night in the particularly rough and heavily forested area. The area was non-accessible for cars and SUVs, leaving search and rescue operations to rely on helicopter and bloodhound search teams on foot or horseback.
ABC 4 Salt Lake reports that search teams found Ropelato at around 8:40 a.m Saturday, in good condition. The county public information officer told media Saturday that the boy hiked nearly five miles from where he was reported missing, and told crews that he built a lean-to shelter with sticks to make it through the night. Media reports indicate that around 200 people participated on foot and horseback Saturday to help find the boy, including dog teams from Salt Lake City, Ogden and Wyoming.
The Garret Bardsley Foundation issued a call for volunteers Saturday morning to help find the boy. The foundation is named after a 12-year-old Boy Scout who disappeared in the Uinta Mountains in 2004 and was never found. The boy’s father started the foundation that bears his name.
The county public information officer said Ropelato’s reunion with his family members was extremely emotional, and several of the searchers were also in tears following the positive outcome.
Ropelato’s four older brothers are all Eagle Scouts, and his mother Dawn was confident in her son’s survival skills when the boy was missing Friday.
“I know he knows all the scout laws so I hope that as he realized he was lost he was smart enough to stop and think about the things that he’s been taught.”
“I know that he knows to pray,” she said to the Desert News Friday. “I personally think that he will be all right and that he will be found well and in good health.”
When news came that Jared was found alive and well Saturday, the family’s prayers were answered.

I hope that Boy Scout training pays off.
And to think there are those trying to shut down the Boy Scouts!

Posted on August 15, 2011 at 7:20pmIt makes no difference HOW he became separated. What’s important is that he kept his wits, didn’t panic, and that there was a good outcome. Every year, adults get lost in our area’s boondocks, which are heavily forested mountains. Unlike Jared, many of them are hospital cases when…and if..they’re found. Many of them are ill-equipped to be loose in a shopping mall, let alone the back country. Then dozens, and often hundreds of volunteers have to try and save them.ften at a cost of tens of thousands of $$$$.
I have to ask Sleepydog. Were you a perfect kid when you were 12 years old, and always paid attention to the adults’ directions? If you were, then when did you decide to become such a judgemental know-it-all?

It is easy to get turned around my then 3 yr old wandered a mile from our camp before stopping, so I can see how the scout could have gone 5 miles. If he thought he was getting back with the group. The Garrett Bardsley foundation is a wonderful organization. These stories make me cry because until you’re a parent facing the reality that your son/daughter might never come home again. It’s a desperate feeling. I am thankful for the men who found my son and thankful for those who looked for and found this Boy Scout.

Jack2011. I read your comments and you seem like a decent person. Why would you insult a 12 year old boy?
__________
Because he doesn’t deserve any praise. He acted foolishly but not as foolish as SHEEPLE who heap praise on someone who doesn’t deserve it.
And, worse, he “survived” LOL for ONE NIGHT in AUGUST and people act like he lasted for weeks.
Fine – he was found – that is good. But any praise for him is not. He was stupid for losing track of his group and even dumber for NOT staying put but instead walking 5 miles away.
Report Post »kindling
Posted on August 14, 2011 at 12:21amI have to agree with Jack….I probably would not be so mean though. When I read the story I thought why didn’t this boy just stay where he was, why did he get 5 miles away. Then I also thought it does not get that cold at this time of year. I also think about parents that praise their kids for things that are not praise worthy. This is one of those times. The boy made several very bad choices and he is a hero. I would say I am very grateful he is okay, then I would ground him for not following rules.

Why this 12 year old, and not 19 people shot in a CHURCH by a raving lunatic? Was this 12 year better than those in the church? or any other 12 year old who has the misfortune to be so unlucky in a survival situation?
As far as the comment about the kid hiking, if the area he was left in was not suitable shelter, then I too would have hiked to a more suitable location, but i would have left a trail. He is only 12 you know.

LOLReally- Don’t believe? Don’t join. SIMPLE. Start a program for Atheist children. My 12 yo is in Scouts through our Church. My older boys went through the same group. Our friend has a boy who is in a group through school where the don’t focus on God as much. It won’t be long before there is no rules for ANY groups. Son wants to be a Girl Scout, fine. It’s getting ridiculous.
As for black boys being in Scouts, my sons pack has a young man who is black. By the size of the pack, it’s pretty much in line with the population in our area.

We’re not talking about inside a nice safe building, or even his own back yard, there are poisonous snakes, maybe bears, (Thank you department of Wildlife for re-introducing wild animals where you didn’t think there were enough.) mountain lions, coyotes, and possibly wolf packs, in a national forest, a 12 yr. old boy must have been prepared for anything, and without being allowed to carry a “survival knife” it could easily have been 1 deadly night!
Get with the program, this isn’t the “Great Outdoors” of the 1960′s when most of America had been tamed! It’s a new century, and the Biblical prophecy that 1/3 of the earth shall perish by “the beasts of the field” is now a whole lot more likely if the rest of the world is as weird as America in this regard.
Yogi Bear & Booboo, aren’t nearly as likely to show up as an Angry Mama Bear who considers a boy a threat to her cubs.

The one thing that you notice right away is the SAMENESS of your environment. Its quite easy to get turned around if you’re not marking your trail or have a compass with you. Trees, hills and brush looks pretty much the same…..The kid probably didn’t realize how far he had strayed. Given that though, he should have stayed stationary and not wandered. But cut the kid some slack, as a other posters have said there is the presence of wild animals out there….The idea that Scouts no longer can carry a pocket knife is beyond being STUPID….Thank God nothing worse happened to him

Posted on August 13, 2011 at 4:46pmSee his scout skills paid off when they had to. And the crazy atheists and ACLU want to disband them. May they get lost in the woods and never be found. GOD bless this child.

Posted on August 13, 2011 at 6:18pmThe “crazy” athiests do not want to stop scouting. From my experience they simply wanted to stop heavy handed endoctrination into that particular groups religous views. In other words, you cant discriminate against me for not believing as you do. There is no doubt God has a strong role in scouting. Religon’s purpose is more for the intimidation to follow a good life for those who have trouble doing so on thier own. But some troops push religon very hard, and to each thier own. Athiests were upset that a boy was kicked out for not praying or saying the word God. My belief is there is a God BUT most of you have it soo wrong it sickens me, you treat others like garbage (first hand experience here) and then go to church on sunday acting like your a saint, and somehow in your head that makes it all better. If you truly practiced what you preach then great but this cafeteria religon is junk. My troop was awsome, the best ever, Truely representative of what scouting should be, it’s not another sunday school nor should it be devoid of God but a respectfull enviroment for teaching boys to become men.

Posted on August 13, 2011 at 4:45pmI’m glad he’s okay! But he screwed up. The first rule is that if you are not in immediate danger: STAY PUT!!!!!! He delayed his rescue by hiking five miles! No merit badge for him.

Posted on August 13, 2011 at 5:10pmyep, he did break the first rule of thumb–not to wander from your last known location unless absolutely necessary. however, i do hand it to him for his survival skills. not many 12 year olds would have the cool head to think through what to do in order to survive. kudos to his boy scout trainers and his older brothers (probably so since they’re both scouts) for teaching him and so glad he was given the wisdom to put most of it to use.

Posted on August 13, 2011 at 5:16pmTrue, and it sounds like the buddy system failed too. Scouts aren’t supposed to be alone on a hike like this. Still, it looks like the program (and his family of Eagle Scouts) at least taught him to keep his cool and make a shelter for the night. I suspect they will discuss these things now that he is safely home.

Posted on August 14, 2011 at 12:31amIf he had just sat down when he lost sight of his camp mates he would have been just fine. He wondered and stopped only to gather sticks to build a shelter or they might have found him in Idaho.
