NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — Federal transportation officials are investigating what caused the landing gear on a New York-bound flight to malfunction, sending sparks flying as the plane careened down a runway with one of its wings dragging along the tarmac.
Port Authority Spokesman Steve Coleman says no one was hurt Saturday evening when Delta Connection Flight 4951, operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines, made its emergency landing at Kennedy Airport on its way to White Plains, N.Y., from Atlanta.
Video captured by a passenger and shown on the Daily News website shows a tensely quiet cabin in the seconds before the words “brace for impact” came over the jet’s loudspeaker. After the warning, a flight attendant can be heard yelling “heads down, stay down” again and again.
The Daily News also obtained a transcript of the conversation between the pilot and air traffic control:
“We are making our approach,” the pilot said.
“4951, it’s been confirmed the gear is stuck up?” the tower asked.
“As far was we know the gear is stuck up,” the pilot said.
The tower gave him some speed and altitude instructions.
“Tower, thanks for your help, 4951.”
Atlantic Southeast Airlines spokesman Jarek Beem says the airline is working with federal authorities to investigate.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Was her head down? I don’t know but how can you put you head down in those narrow seats? I could lay my head against the backrest, but all the way down to my lap, never. Disadvantage of being tall.

Posted on September 27, 2010 at 4:47amMechanicals are scary. Been there, done that. When I was young I was on a flight to Phoenix, and we were told to prepare for a crash landing. Place your head down – the whole nine yards. Overheard from one of the in-flight crew, landing gear not indicating locked in down possition. Obviously, I’m here to tell this short story but it was a gotcha life moment. I feel for everyone involved when a plane has a close call, crashes, or a mechancial occur; people, families, crew, maintainance crews alike. That was a cool customer of a pilot. What can you do though but go with what you’ve been trained for; place the plane in the proper possition, bring her down as gentle as possible, and then let physics take over. Hat’s off to the pilots and what they can do with these machines!!!!

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 9:34pmThese people did their job – the system worked, so to speak. They were properly trained, and they executed the plan. We are capable of much more than we think. They stepped up when needed. And in many ways, that‘s what’s going on around the country right now.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 8:23pmThe Flight Attendant deserves a medal also. I”m a Flight Attendant and we are trained to save passengers lives during an emergency.. It’s not all about the pilots. I hope that the passengers thank the Flight Attendant.

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 8:52pmI’m sure flight attendants help keep people calm but lets face it, without the pilot and tower crew the passengers and flight attendants would all be in a bad situation don’t you think?

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 7:06pmAs a pilot’s wife, and former flight attendant, I’m well aquainted with the phrase “Take off is optional, landing is not”. I’m also acutely aware that at any given time, any number of things can go wrong. Praise God for His blessings on the lives of these people today!

Posted on September 26, 2010 at 3:55pmBeing a pilot must be tough on a normal day. Being a pilot during a crisis and pulling it off properly is truly a heroic act. Kudos to all involved in getting the plane safely down, including the tower personnel and the emergency folks on the ground.
