‘Brave Warrior’: Hear a Heartbroken Grandmother Tell CNN Why Her Fallen Navy SEAL Did Not Fear Death

Fallen Navy SEAL Aaron Carson Vaughns Grandmother Talks to CNN

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Elite Navy SEALs member Aaron Carson Vaughn had asked the military to return him to combat and shipped out just six weeks before he was killed when a U.S. military helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan, killing 38, including 22 SEALs.

Vaughn’s grandmother, Geneva Vaughn of Union City, Tenn., told The Associated Press on Saturday that her grandson, a Tennessee native, had wanted to be a SEAL since he was a child and returned to combat just two weeks after his 2-month-old daughter was born this summer.

Geneva Vaughn says he was already a decorated fighter when he was asked by the Navy to return stateside to become an instructor. He chafed under the assignment and applied to SEAL Team 6. Military authorities notified the family of his death.

Editor’s note: The most powerful part of this interview begins at the 1:44 mark in the video.  The partial transcript below doesn’t fully capture the poignancy of the live television moment:

CNN:

“As a brave warrior, Aaron was brave. But yet, he was a gentle man,” Geneva Carson Vaughn told CNN.

Fallen Navy SEAL Aaron Carson Vaughns Grandmother Talks to CNN

“He loved his family. He loved his country and he was willing to give his life to protect his family and protect his country. He was a great American.”

Her grandson, who turned 30 in June, was stationed in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and had been in the service for about eight years, she said.

She recalled one of the last conversations she had with him.

“I told him to be careful and he said, ‘Granny, don’t worry about me.‘ He said ’I‘m not afraid because I know where I’m going if something happens to me.’ Aaron was a Christian and he stood firm in his faith,” she said, her voice heavy with emotion.

“He’s with the Lord now, and I’ll see him again some day.”

For all these, my brothers in arms, I pray that God will grant them the reward they have earned. For Jesus, Himself, said: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:12-13). In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

To those who choose to use this report to spew your hate and lies … shame on you! Are you too ignorant and so callous not to know there are times and places when you leave your hatred and prejudices behind and instead give thanks for men and women like this young, brave, selfless warrior who righteously stands tall and strong in the way of those who would try to take away our precious, God given and richly blessed Freedoms and Rights?

If I may paraphrase John 15:13 … There is no greater love than a man lay down his life for a stranger. Rest in Peace, Aaron Carson Vaughn, for though our hearts are breaking … your love for God and Country brings inner Peace to us all.

Lay down his life for a stranger? He didn’t go there with bread and roses but with bombs and guns! He went there to blow the arms and legs off of men ,women and children-in one of the most backward and poorest people on earth.I know ,I know ,you believe if you use the word“ freedom” when those bombs are falling on the men, women and children then somehow you’re conforming to Christ. The freedom fighters alquada believe they’re conforming to God too when they fight to liberate their homelands from soviet invasion or american backed dictators or american invasions. You hide behind nationalism and religion when you drop your murdering bombs even as you denounce them for same.[and of course we messed in their homelands via colonialism, zionism, and american proxy regimes] The people of afghanistan [i don't care how backward their religion is]have the right to fight back when invaded!]My solidarity is with the afghan people who we are waging war against ,using bombs to blow the arms and legs off of native men women and children!Shame on the americans! What is vile is your glorification of your mass murdering terrorists as you hypocritically denounce them for being violent and labeling any one who calls you on it as unamerican. If being pro american means being pro mass murder and torture which is what you americans are doing then nothing is more vile then americanism. If that is the case i’m a proud anti-american. As is the civilized world. You don’t own the world and its people

How sad for YOU, Rose-Ellen. Our military personnel are some of our greatest ambassadors. They try with all their might to inflict blows on only enemy combatants, while the enemy they face seek to injure everyone possible……..the enemy will kill dozens of their own innocents to kill just one of ours. There’s a MIGHTY difference between those we fight, and our finest who fight them.
Our Best give the ultimate sacrifice to try to give others around the globe a CHANCE at what you enjoy EVERY DAY, apparently with no thanks or respect for those who have earned it for you by their blood, sweat and tears of the loved ones they leave behind.
I respect your right to disagree, but you only prove your own ignorance in your cheap attempt to scorn those who defend you daily. May GOD have Mercy on YOU! Those who have fought and died for you already have GOD’S Reward. You are just pathetic.

      @Rose Ellen,

Lol. You’re a lunatic. Individuals like you tend to forget, the Taliban and Al Qaeda picked this fight (unlike our misguided ventures in Iraq and Libya), we did not. Furthermore, those who go to Afghanistan with bread and roses get decapitated with a dull knife by Al Qaeda, the Taliban, or their supporters. Also, it is not the U.S. military/NATO that are targeting civilians, it is the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The majority of civilian deaths in Afghanistan can be directly attributed to the actions of the jihadists, due to a policy of killing as many men, women, and children, as possible, who are trying to live normal lives, so as to terrorize and destabilize the population.

If your intention is to end the wars in the Middle East and South Asia, may I suggest you refrain from using wildly inaccurate propaganda? It only serves to galvanize the people against you. Perhaps you should focus on the the financial cost of these wars and their general ineffectiveness. Or maybe you could gain a bit of gumption and travel to Pakistan or Afghanistan with some bread and roses, no?

I thank the service men and women who have laid down their lives in our defense, and may these SEALs finally find the rest they so deserve.

I’m so sad to hear this. I can‘t help but feel those Taliban members may have already been dead if we had different ’rules of engagement’..

“The number of US casualties has been on a steady and disconcerting climb over the last several months, in what can be taken as a signal of the growing threat from this nearly invincible enemy. Our own rules of engagement may have come to be the cause of more battle casualties in Afghanistan than any other single factor. One may wonder, given our catch-and-release policy, if the insurgents responsible for this shoot-down may have been in our custody before. It’s a shameful reminder of why most liberals who have come of age since WWII should never be entrusted with the nation’s defenses, or at the top of the military chain of command. In this time of grief over our fallen heroes, let us dedicate a moment’s reflection to the purpose of reducing the number who will surely join them.” –M.A.

I was in afghanistan in the 70′s just prior to the soviet invasions. it was like going back to biblical days. There was hardly any food in winter, diluted soup and it was freezing and children were so poor they were out with bare feet in the freezing cold. In the summer their was plenty of food[fresh fruits].The women were wearing burqas-it is part of the culture -not a taliban invention] While there i got sick and went to the local hospital. They told me the supplies and medicines had not arrived yet from the USSR so they had no medicine to treat a cough..Sure they kill collaborators with the invaders-all people do when invaded . Alquada was a group ,not a regime, state, or government or a people. We have used bombs on villages and people .Whether you call them taliban or whatever they are the people of afghanistan and we invaded them through bombs. No one hurt me when i went there as a western female. I didn’t go there with guns and bombs. On the contrary i was treated with kindness and much hospitalityAnd they never said anything anti-america.i was surprised how well the merchants spoke english and whatever other language western tourists spoke. You are committed to the belief you can murder people with impunity then when you get some blow back you complain they’re violent. It’s self serving and shows a willfil disregard for putting yourself in the place of the war torn invaded backward afghans. I side with the victims-the afghans and the iraqis. Alquada is not them .

If we Americans are so terrible, so bloodthirsty, so evil we do not blink an eye at the “mass murdering” we commit, do us all a favor? LEAVE. Go live among your beloved Afghanies, or wherever you please, but just leave. Aaron Vaughn, was one of the 22 Navy Seals that lost their lives in Afghanistan last Saturday. Each died in the service of their country. Vaughn and his fellow Seals from Seal Team 6 were among the bravest of the brave. The loss of 31 military men was a tragedy beyond words to describe but each of these courageous men went down standing up ! It was a good and honorable death.

Men like Aaron Vaughn is the main reason I believe the USA is still the land of the free and the home of the brave. As a former USA Marine that fought in Korea and Vietnam, I know I can safely lay my head on my pillow each night because men like Aaron Vaughn are guarding the wall. Shock and awe, was a press made up term for the invasion of Iraq! Too bad you didn’t keep the two fronts straight. We went into Iraq with a totally different mindset than Afghanistan, and at the time we started, we had the support of the majority of the Afghany people. It was after we didn’t take out the Taliban leaders, and they came back to threaten and intimidate the villagers that, this turned. If we’d have gone in totally and could truly root the terrorists out, you’d see a totally different attitude. Most of the hatred is from pipelined in terrorists from other countries. Thus it has always been that these thugs keep the people of this country poor. If we had different ROE‘s they’d be free to speak openly and our “Liberators” would be better appreciated.
May God bless the effort of the fallen, and give us leaders, that will truly “Liberate” the people that all the blood shed might not be in vain!

I had nearly lost faith in this world. The economy has been in a crisis for such a long time & I’ve terribly worried about the future for our young people, including my own children & grandchild. Young men (and women) of faith like this, willing to give everything, including their lives, to protect America, it rekindles my faith. During yesterday’s prayer event at Reliant Stadium, which I participated in via live stream from 10 am to 5:45 pm, through a steady stream of tears (I could not stop), I witnessed thousands of young people praying, worshiping & interceding for America – well; that rekindled my faith too! We have spiritual warriors & we have literal warriors, both prepared to battle. Let us have more faith in our young people, Lord. Let us remember your promises.

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:17-21

Stop fighting a political war and let them fight like it’s a real war… and stop selling weapons to those who find a use for them against us….

That’s the catch, isn’t it? What does “defeat these bastards” mean exactly? We expelled the Taliban from power years ago. Now we’re engaged in missionary work, trying to convert Afghanistan into a democracy. Do we even understand war anymore? Do we understand that the Marshall Plan will not work in Islamic nations? Do we understand that we can’t afford it?

Perhaps a more sane strategy for war is to break your enemy and leave…and if they pop up again, break them again. Spending soldiers lives and american treasure trying to rebuild that rathhole is not worth it.

While I grieve for the families of our fallen warriors. I wish that the media and general public would keep this in mind. Their families are vulnerable right now and i feel that some in the media are trying to exploit these families. These men are the best of the best of the best and as such have participated in operations that no one will ever know about. Remember that after the raid on Osama all these men asked for was protection for their families. In that light I feel it highly irresponsible for any media outlet to put any family member of our fallen warriors into the public light. For CNN to put on air the grandmother of one of our fallen warriors on tv for all the world to see is stupid at best. While I understand the publics’ interest in this tragic story. We should all send our thoughts and prayers to their families and leave the identities and details unknown. We the people should rest in the knowledge that the nation experienced a lost that will reverberate for years. God Speed warriors and may the Lord comfort and keep your families in the hollow of His hand.

These men are manipulated brainwashed drones. Brainwashed with hubris and with the real religion of 21stc america-americanism. We have truned it into a nazi like mentality -totalizing good vs. evil where the ends justify the means and we wage war on people not regimes or nation states and their militaries. They take God’s name in vain every time they mention Jesus to validate their invasions, torture and mass murder of men women and children, which has been going on for 10 yrs. now and where 1- 2 milion people have been murdered. and more displaced and wounded by americans and their lackeys and the strife caused by invading and occupaying murdering americans. They may believe in Jesus [like money in the bank] but there is nothing Christ like about joining the military to drop bombs on iraqis or afghans.

Rose-Ellen I post this to you directly. I pray for your soul. I pray that the light of the Lord God on high shine down upon you and soften your hardened heart. For you see my friend I fear for your soul because of the hatred you spew forth. You my friend chose to lash out at people who have no ill will toward anyone. They were men just doing their job and while however grotesque you think their job may be these are men who stand in the gap day in and day out willing to lay down their life when called on by their country they serve. If you want to lash out at some one lash out at those who are all too quick to rush to war. For you see those men are not the men that paid the highest price for your freedom to denigrate their service. For you see anyone that serves in uniform does not take joy in going to war. They are not brainwashed into service they do their service out of compassion for their fellow man. They choose to serve because they do know the value of every human life and pray that they will not have to take a life in their service. Our service members do not strap bombs to their chest they do not call out God’s name when when they detonate those bombs surrounded by innocent men women and children. They say a prayer before they go out in the field a prayer of guidance and protection for all they come into contact with. You choose to lash out not out of love but out of pure hate. I pray for your soul as I pray for the comfort of the families of our fallen

Don’t listen to Al Jazeera do you? All those statement made by Osama and The American Terrorist, along with the rest of their pap, threatens your rights as well as the rest of our’s if you actually are in America; the twin towers had muslims working in them too. Nobody called them to warn away from work before those planes hit! If we hadn’t intercepted the NY subway bomber, people from every nation might have been killed. The plot on the SF Airport, don’t you find any of these a little stifling of your freedom to go these places? Did you notice that 99% of the attacks planned for this country were on civilian targets? Sure they attempt military too, but only 1%. The suicide bombs and IED’s in their own country are as likely to get civilians as the enemy.

They attack american civilians because we hide our military behind them too. Give them drones, night vision goggles and they’ll target your bases. And the only reason they want to target america at all-is not because of your religion but because of your policies of propping up proxy dictators who murdered their own people which benefitted us but obviously not the people[hence the uprisings now going on there].For cheap oil. military bases and cold war anti-leftists interests we propped up dictators who, allowed us to have bases and cheap oil and where dictators murdered all leftists or fundamentalists. Those mid east borders were carrved up by western colonialists for western interests which the people there were subjected to. Your self serving narrative that we were peacefuly minding our own busuness and because we are free and becaause we are not muslim they suddenly decided to attack the US is ridiculous on its face and denies our unjust meddling where the individual human rights of those people was subservient to our need for oil, military bases and anti-soviet proxys. They rose up and alquada was the first salvo to liberate their people from foreign unjust meddling. Your religion had nothing to do with it except in so far as their prrimary identity is as muslim /arabs and our meddling effected them so their resistence is called a jihad meaning a defense of their people against our unjust policies. You twist the narrative into a religious war to dismiss your unjust policies
