Breach Suspected at Japan Nuke Plant — Gov’t Advises Citizens to Flee

TOKYO (The Blaze/AP) — A suspected breach in the core at one reactor at a stricken Fukushima nuclear plant could mean more serious radioactive contamination, Japanese officials revealed Friday – a situation the prime minister called “very grave and serious.”
A somber Prime Minister Naoto Kan sounded a pessimistic note at a briefing hours after nuclear safety officials said they suspected a breach at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant that would be a major setback in the urgent mission to stop the facility from leaking radiation.
“The situation today at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant,” Kan said. “We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care.”
Hours earlier, two government officials encouraged those withing 20-30 km to evacuate voluntarily amid concerns of dwindling access to necessities so close to the disaster.
The uncertain situation halted work at the nuclear complex, where dozens had been trying feverishly to stop the overheated plant from leaking dangerous radiation. The plant has leaked some low levels of radiation, but a breach could mean a much larger release of contaminants.
Kan apologized to farmers and business owners for the toll the radiation has had on their livelihoods: Several countries have halted some food imports from areas near the plant after milk and produce were found to contain elevated levels of radiation.
The prime minister also thanked utility workers, firefighters and military personnel for “risking their lives” to cool the overheated facility.
The alarm Friday comes on a day marking two weeks since the magnitude-9 quake triggered a tsunami that enveloped cities along the northeast coast and knocked out the Fukushima reactor’s cooling system.
Police said the official death toll jumped past 10,000 on Friday. With the cleanup and recovery operations continuing and more than 17,400 listed as missing, the final number of dead was expected to surpass 18,000.
The nuclear crisis has compounded the challenges faced by a nation already saddled with a humanitarian disaster. Much of the frigid northeast remains a scene of despair and devastation, with Japan struggling to feed and house hundreds of thousands of homeless survivors, clear away debris and bury the dead.

Posted on March 25, 2011 at 5:02pmI don’t see any, “It’s not so serious” people broadcasting directly from the site. Not talking so much about Glenn as I am talking about government officials and executives of the company. Why should they escape the consequences? I really hope there is a thorough investigation to see if there were any cost cutting measures done by the company to save money and increase profits that resulted in safety risks.

Posted on March 25, 2011 at 3:41pmI’m not trying to bash Glenn, but people really need to go worth their own guts on everything. Listen to what is said, but draw your own conclusions according to what you yourself believe to be true. Don’t trust what any government official has to say, with out your own research. Don’t even trust what Glenn says without your own research. He has ALWAYS said that. And he has always said to go with your gut. Personally I did not believe it for a minute when we were told that the radiation was not that bad. You can’t trust anything in the media.

Would you go to a car salesman or a politician to learn about jet propulsion or molecular genetics? It is also baffling how people think that the Japanese want to be converted to a particular religion at this time.

Posted on March 25, 2011 at 9:45amA number of technical details released make no sense.
Report Post »1) The Japanese govt. admits not fully throwing support behind the reactors for several days due to other overwhelming problems. Um. Major priority problem. The nuke plant left to fail can contaminate your entire country and other countries for decades and centuries.
2) Even though the plant was pretty much right on the beach and they know tsunamis are a strong possibility the diesel backup generators were not installed in such a way as to be protected ie: in elevated structures or in water tight vaults on the ground. The air intake and exhaust ports could remain sealed unless the generators are in use.
3) THE biggest weird nonsensical story was that when they brought in backup generators from another area the “plug did not match” so their use was abandoned . Please tell me that was some numb-nut journalists rendering of what really happened. If the plugs dont match you cut the plugs off, throw them in the mud and splice the cables.
I know I’m second guessing and hindsight and all, but I and I know many others want the true technical details. People arent so stupid they need to be fed kindergarten level details. I also know a big part of the problem is that journalists are universally imbeciles when it comes to anything technical.

Now a national sacrifice has been created and the release of isotopes into the pacific will containment the pacific fisheries for years. Posted on March 25, 2011 at 5:53pmCharles…Couldn’t agree more. To add to point #2. Even if these generators/pumps were swamped why could they not have been made operable? If they had started working on their engines promptly they could likely have been salvaged. Pull the injectors, crank them over a few times to blow the water out, change the oil, possibly add a new fuel source (tank), and fire em up. Maybe the generator side had complex electronics that were ruined, but Japan of all places should know to repair those.
Report Post »It would be even more amazing if they truly ditched an effort of using temporary generators because the plugs didn’t match. Anyone who has pulled someone elses boat trailer has the ability to overcome this issue. This makes no sense.
I have more faith in these brave people on the ground facing the issues than the media gives them credit for, so I take the reports which make them sound like idiots with a grain of salt.
However, I believe they’ve had more than enough time to try to stop a time bomb and the concrete should have started flowing days ago. If people are now eating radioactive food, and drinking radioactive water, the time has come to bury the hatchet thats hurting people.

Nuclear power is the safest and the greenest form of energy that we can effectively mass produce at this time. I am NOT saying that we should not explore other sources of energy. I am saying that we NEED nuclear power at this juncture in time, and it WON’T be soon when we can turn our collective backs on it willy-nilly. We need all the energy that we can produce and more from every source available for as long as most of us will be alive. Learn to use it and you will not be afraid of it. Posted on March 25, 2011 at 9:40amGlenn Beck’s declaration that the Japan disaster was “ overblown ” was not only “ premature ” but irrational in the light of the most recent reports of the radiation leak and the potencial danger from the damaged nuclear plants. Apparently all attempts to contain the radiation leak has been unsucessful and the danger to Japan and the world has increased daily. Exposure to high amounts of radiation is a death sentence to those who have been contaminated. “Overblown, no, underblown, yes “!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Glenn Beck fan and I appreciate his fight against the liberal progressives and communist that are deeply embedded in our government and society but, on this issue, I think he missed the target. It’s hard to be “overblow ” when a radiation leak and widespread contamination are concerned. The crisis caused by radiation contamination could suddenly be transformed into a worldwide “doomsday” scenario.
The Japanese earthquake, following tsunami and damage to the nucler power plants may turn into the world’s greatest disaster. The casualty list of the dead, injured and missing grows by the hour and IF exposure to radiation occurs on a widespread scale it will reach astronomical proportions. It
doesn’t look good for Japan or the world. Those that have to deal with the situation and contain the threat are working in unchartered territory.
Japan’s food and water sources are being contaminated by radiation and this could turn into a worldwide threat and catastrophe, depending on the extent of the leak. The world economic crisis this disaster could eventually create could be greater than any other previously encountered. The 2012 Mayan prediction of the end of the world could possibly become fact intead of fiction.

Report Post »IF the cores are not actually damaged, the problems of radioactivity and cleanup are not as large as they would be otherwise.
IF the cores ARE actually damaged, then that is a whole ‘nuther matter altogether. Cooling would take a LOT LONGER. Better to cover it up than clean it up once cooled. You do NOT want to be stirring up and transporting radioactive waste and debris offsite. Or do you?
IF NONE of the cores is ACTUALLY damaged, there might be a possibility of restoring some of the reactors to use. All reports I’VE seen report minimal releases of radioactive material. Residual effects are minimal so it seems to me. This appears to be a NATURAL disaster not a NUCLEAR disaster. What’s the deal?
