5 Confirmed Dead in Tragic Yuma, Ariz. Shootings, Suspect Identified

YUMA, Ariz. (The Blaze/AP)—Yuma police say five people have been killed in a shooting that has forced authorities to close schools and the courthouse. Details about the shooter and victims were not immediately clear.

The Yuma Sun has more:

One other victim has been injured and airlifted to a Phoenix-area hospital.

Norred said the shootings are connected, and are currently under investigation.

Four of the fatal shootings took place out in the county, Norred said, while the fifth person was killed in Yuma.

Norred would not confirm the identity of any of the victims, but attorneys in the downtown Yuma area confirmed the Yuma victim was attorney Jerrold Shelley, who was shot and killed.

Norred also wouldn’t confirm if the suspect was alive or dead. However, traffic on the police scanner said the suspect in the shootings had taken his own life.

MSNBC continues:

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office was called to the first scene this morning, when the body of a woman was found in a yard at Avenue 35-1/2E and Old Highway 80, the Sun said.

Around 9:21 a.m., the Yuma Police Department responded to a shooting in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue in Yuma, which is where Shelley was killed.

According to police scanner traffic followed by the Sun, two more shootings were reported in the Wellton area, followed by a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Blaisdell off Highway 95. The Yuma Sun was not able to confirm the location of the sixth shooting

5 Confirmed Dead in Tragic Yuma, Ariz. Shootings, Suspect Identified

Wellton Mayor James Deermer said that he doesn’t have a lot of information about the shooting yet, but he called the incident a “tragedy.” According to the Yuma Sun:

Yuma Mayor Al Krieger commended public safety officers for their swift response to the tragedy.

“The situation has ended and now we’re sorting out the details,” he said.

“My sympathies to the families with this loss of life.”

This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE: From the Yuma Sun:

The suspect in a series of shootings around Yuma County is dead, police said. Carey Hal Dyess, 73, of Yuma, apparently shot and killed one person in Yuma and three people in Yuma County before shooting himself, according to a press release from the Yuma Police Department.

well lets see…. if I was a cop, and you shot one of my fellow comrades.. I think I, along with the rest of the crew that was around.. would open fire..
If you want to talk gun control, that should have had tighter laws years and YEARS ago! Saying a gun kills people is like saying a car kills people? How about the kid that falls off a bicycle and hits his head and dies, was it the bikes fault? PEOPLE kill PEOPLE! Period. I for one am all for an armed society. First a gun saftey program, second a thorough background check, I mean thorough.!! If you have had so much as a domestic dispute anywhere in the past say 5 years, anything linked to violence, no gun being sold to you. The problem is that now, there are sooooooooooooooooooooooo many guns out there already, nobody could ever get an accurate count. TEACH people, hell, when I was in 7th grade we actually had a Hunter/Gun saftey course in school. Actually went to the firing range and fired our weapons, under SUPERVISED instructors. I have had a gun in my possesion since I was 8 years old and not once.. did I EVER think of shooting someone! If a person wants to kill you, THEY WILL FIND A WAY! butter knife.. hammer, baseball bat.. etc..etc..etc…

The shooter may have been justified in his actions. You never know or can say that until you get the facts. Like Dirty Harry said ” there is nothing wrong with shooting, as long as the right people get shot”. But, you are probably right. I feel sorry for the perps too. It is terrible that a person would be driven to that.

      @ SEASONOFREASON,

I am alive because of the right to bear arms.

My mom was a young widow with two young boys (4 & 2 y.o.) and she had to pull a gun (my dad’s 30/30) on a psycho who threatened to kill all of us if she did not tell him where his wife (my mom’s best friend) was. My mom pulled out the 30/30 and told him he had one chance to stay alive, and that if he ever showed up again, she would assume the worst and there would be no conversation, just bullets in his head.

He had beat her repeatedly and my mom sent her bus fair and she got the hell away from this guy.
We found out later that he went to prison shortly after this because he had beaten to death his next girlfriend.

There was no way we could have kept this guy at bay long enough for the police to do anything for us except fill out a murder report and collect forensic evidence of our demise.

I have friend in Yuma btw, and he repelled a pair of home invaders with a gun, protecting his wife and kids.

Hell, even Tammy Bruce is a Liberal Babe who understood the need to be able to defend yourself, and thus was always a proud gun owner.

      Seasonofreason….

      1) if everyone had guns, it probably wouldnt cross most peoples minds, to even attempt it. Yeah the man killed himself in the end, and probably because of pride or something…much more gratifying to take your own life before someone else can….

      2) When we say everyone, we mean the law abiding citizens, and because they are law abiding most of them would have taken shooting awareness class or something, and learned the dangers and how to properly use the guns…..

      3) Could a stray bullet have killed another person from either gun…the one going around killing people, or even the one trying to take him down….sure….but that whole scenerio would have probably ended at the first victim….and also you must remember it is challenging enough to shoot to kill the target you are aiming at….less likely to hit and kill someone you are not aiming at….not saying it doesn’t happen…but not likely…..I know i know you have seen tons of stories about stray bullets killing people…..well because the media loves those stories and will give them tons of airplay….

      3) Just because you do not understand guns, and are afraid of them, doesn’t mean they are bad. Guns do not explode….the reason I say this is because all the gun control people make it sound like if there is a gun in the vicinity everyone around it will die…..if this were the case all the soldiers would be dead….just because they are alive does not mean they have not been shot at…

It would reinforce you prejudices, and fit right into the paranoid racist narrative you’ve all been pushing. Now, that doesn’t seem to be the case. So, where are the apologies?

And then there are the posts anticipating the gun control arguments, as if it were unfair for someone to make an argument based on facts and real events. If the shooter was in fact an illegal immigrant, obviously the incident would be used to make some political point about our borders and security and how immigrants are ruining this country, etc. etc. However, it is apparently completely out-of-bounds to use what ACTUALLY HAPPENED to reinforce an argument about gun control.

So, you folks do the patented Blaze Shuffle. You construct an alternate counter-factual reality and use it to support your political beliefs, all while refusing to acknowledge the actual facts.

This was a tragic incident. The idea of using this incident to make petty political attacks on immigrants without knowing any of the facts is just stupid.

      @publuis

I was one of the first people to say it was a White guy that cracked under the pressure of multiculturialsim or political correctness.

What do I win for being right?

The Big Pickle “White people are cracking after 30 plus years of multiculturialism, forced intregation, forced segregation, forced political correctness, forced affirmative action, and all kinds of other unnatural acts that are FORCED upon our people.”

First of all I’m not familiar with this story.. I was just reading the blog.. Although I am well aware of the results of multicult, dieversity, and desegregation.. It‘s not working was not intended to work and has no chance to work going forward but in the meantime big gov’t is clamping down taking more and more of our liberties and freedom..

You go on and mention GB crying today.. I took a short nap after work and woke up to it.. I was cussing in a matter of minutes.. He’s truly a sicko shilling for Jews. .Probably being paid real well to lie to the people and deceive them into believing that Jews are always innocent..

Anyway, I thought you were a big fan of Israel of the Jews? No? Or are you simply just making fun of GB crying?

Ok. I understand the danger of guns, that is why I made the statement I did. I’m unaware of the statistics or studies cited. My statement was in response to the hypothesis that more guns could have led to less deaths. I was just proposing an alternate hypothesis.

For of all 1488. We both know that it means.

I understand where you are coming from regarding jews owning the banks, the media, the government etc..etc..etc… We just have a different order in listing our enemies. You have the joos at the top of the list and I have them about 5th on my list.

And yeah…Glen is going way overboard with all his jew sympathy…they must have threatened to take away his publicity or blackmailed him into this submission. Either way, him sitting there with a box of tissues and crying is unwatchable.

That’s bullcrap Luckywon. Study your facts. Illegals don’t commit more crimes than citizens. Don’t be absurd. Are you a racist, or just ignorrant on the matter?

I’m not for illegal aliens or the “crap” act, but I’m also not for scapegoating our problems on Mexicans…

While I’m here, I might as well say what’s up to my fellow Arizona Conservatives on The Blaze. Is this not a beautiful day we’re having today? It’s almost like this every day!

Also, if you are a Black or Hispanic, or Asian Conservative, get your butt out here! This is the greatest State in The Republic : )

Those were some real good guesses about the shooter being an illegal. God forbid anyone would wait or look for a fact or two.

This is one time that liberal athiests get religion and actually pray. Every time a shooting hits the news, liberals and democrats get down on their knees, and pray” Oh dear God, please, please, please, let the shooter be white, drive a pick-up, hunt, fish, be an NRA member, watch Fox news, go to church, and be republican. And one other thing God, if he is a typical shooter, and is a minority, a muslim, a listner of violent rap music, or wears an Obama t-shirt, has long nappy braids, and is know to support liberal causes, please let the MSM not air anything about this shooting”.
