Obama-Boehner Debt Ceiling Talks Collapse

President Obama responded with a live press conference:
Just hours after the Senate refused to debate the House GOP’s Cut, Cap & Balance deficit reduction plan, ongoing negotiations between House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama collapsed, derailing efforts to reach an agreement on raising the nation’s debt ceiling. According to House Republicans, GOP leaders now plan to work directly with Senate leaders to craft an alternative plan as the August 2 deadline looms.
WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — House Speaker John Boehner abruptly broke off talks with President Barack Obama Friday night on a deal to cut spending and avert a threatened government default, sending compromise efforts into a crisis state.
Within minutes, an obviously peeved Obama virtually ordered congressional leaders to the White House for a Saturday meeting on raising the nation’s debt limit. “We’ve got to get it done. It is not an option not to do it,” he said.
Officials say a default could destabilize the already weakened U.S. economy and send major ripple effects across the globe.
Leaders in a divided government, Obama and Boehner blamed each other’s partisans for torpedoing a deal.
“In the end, we couldn’t connect,” Boehner wrote Republican rank-and-file lawmakers, accusing the president of wanting to raise taxes and being reluctant to cut benefit programs.
But Obama, in a rare Friday evening turn at the White House podium, said, “I’ve been left at the altar now a couple of times.”
“If Congress and the House Republicans are not willing to ensure that we avoid default, it’s fair to say they take responsibility for whatever arises,” the president said.

He flat out said he is NOT interested in laying blame and then turns around and REPEATEDLY blames the Republicans because they won’t raise taxes and the debt ceiling.

Posted on July 22, 2011 at 6:36pmOpen letter to any Conservative US Congressman
My fellow conservatives please learn from the great communicator Ronald Reagan. His favorite quote when dealing with Tip O’Neill “if they cannot see the light, put them in the spotlight let them feel the heat”
Speaker Boehner, Congressman Cantor, Congressman Mc Carthy please pass one more similar Cut Cap & balance package. Using Reagan’s “let them feel the heat” method, call a press conference and announce “We have passed our final proposal on this matter until the Senate Democrats and the President put forth a bill in legislative language, posted on the web for 72 hours and after a complete review we will reconvene the House and bring it to the floor for debate. Until this happens the House will stand in recess. In addition we have funded all SSI payments and our military, and medicare as well. So Mr. President and Senator Reid the ball is in your court now is the time for you to act.”
Bang the gavel and go home to your districts let them feel the heat from the feeding frenzy of the drive by media.
If anyone knows how to forward this to their congressman/senator please feel free.

Posted on July 22, 2011 at 7:00pmI agree. Obama is so incompetent. How can any deal be possible when the President lays all blame on one party. The Republicans cannot now agree to anything without admitting that all blame belongs to them. No deal is possible now in my opinion. The Republicans have already offered several plans and passed one that the Senate wouldn’t even debate. Boehner should just end negotiations and tell the Democrats to pass their own plan before negotiations resume.

We actually had to borrow money from relatives to pay the buyers closing. And yet- we feel damn lucky to have gotten out from under it. Neither my husband nor I could find employment after his job went away so we knew we were going to have to move out of state. We have been on the move ever since. Just thankful that one of us has a decent job. Obama is not the president of the United States. “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government can not pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

2. Why are President Obama & DemoRats NOT putting legislation on the table with specific facts? No Federal Budget in TWO YEARS! How irresponsible is that?
3. Why is “taxing” one group of Americans not to be considered as a TAX on ALL Americans? This elitist is waging class warfare! Why doesn’t anyone stand up to the propaganda coming from our elected officials?
4. Why do we even care about what rating agencies publish about the “credit worthiness” of the US Government? These same agencies gave WRONG information about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for years. These same agencies stated in writing that Lehman Brothers – Goldman Sachs – and all of the brokerage houses were SOLID financial institutions. Do you think that anyone in CHINA or JAPAN or RUSSIA or Middle East countries believes anything that Moody’s or Standard & Poor’s says about the United States printing vast sums of paper monies?
Now we have runaway INFLATION and that is a tax on everyone!
We have become VICTIMS of the normalcy bias! At least the Government will now STOP SPENDING monies that they do not have to SPEND!

Posted on July 22, 2011 at 7:04pm@booger71 – if we default or even push the envelope to the point that our credit ratings is affected, we have rising interest rates which increases our monthly interest costs, which affects our ability to sell our debt on the marketplace, which means we may not be able to settle the maturing debt which we are obligated to pay as it matures and we fall into third country. I don’t think you really get it. This is not a question of can we meet next months expenses, it is can we pay those expenses as they rise and can we pay our maturing debt.
