Breaking: US Launches Military Action Against Libya
President Barack Obama authorized limited military action against Libya Saturday, saying Moammar Gadhafi’s continued assault on his own people left the U.S. and its international partners with no other choice. The Pentagon said 112 cruise missiles were launched from US and UK ships and subs, hitting 20 targets.

Breaking: US Launches Military Action Against Libya

The Wall Street Journal reports:

U.S. military forces are launching an attack to destroy Libya’s air defenses, joining an international air campaign against the regime of Libyan Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

In a news briefing at the Pentagon Saturday, a senior defense official said U.S. forces would launch a coordinated series of strikes to destroy Libya’s coastal air defenses and radar installations and enable a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone.

“We’re on the leading edge of a coalition here,” the official said….

Key first strikes are expected along the Libyan coastline, where the country’s integrated and missile defense systems are located. “Once we do that, that would open up the environment where we could enforce the no-fly zone from east to west of Libya,” the official said.

Earlier today, an international coalition declared that it would intervene militarily in Libya. Now, the US joins that effort in an attempt to ”prevent further attacks by regime forces on Libyan citizens and opposition groups, especially in and around Benghazi,” according to a senior defense official.

Gadhafi said that “The international coalition will regret daring to intervene in Libya.”

In a statement following today’s Paris summit, immediately after which the international military intervention began, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “we have every reason to fear that left unchecked, Gadhafi will commit unspeakable atrocities.”

Obama said military action was not his first choice.

“This is not an outcome the U.S. or any of our partners sought,” Obama said from Brazil, where he is starting a five-day visit to Latin America. “We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy.”

The AP contributed to this report.

    How much does a cruise missile cost? How much have we spent deploying men and machines for the sake of Libyan rebels? What’s the payback? Obama’s approval rating bumps a couple points? Not worth it.
    Are we now the worlds police force? Any dictator that kills his people and we’re there now? Two months ago the Libyan people hated Americans, Two months after Gadaffi is deposed, the Libyan people will hate Americans.
    This is the height of lunacy, we’re jumping in to help France after they have refused to help us for years?
    Every time I don’t think Obama can get any worse, he exceeds my expectations!

    “112 cruise missiles! WOW!! Please consider my comments from earlier this week under informed! I should be paying at least a 75% tax on my income! After all, these always correct decisions made by our leaders (especially Peace Prize winners) can get expensive. And by calling for higher taxes I add my endorsement to every decision Our Government makes! Including this one!”

    cheezwhiz, you exaggerate. Saddam Hussein only used weapons of mass destruction, like Mustard Gas, Tabun and other nerve agents, to kill thousands of innocent people. Surely, there’s not comparison the evil that is Muammar Gaddafi. At least there doesn’t appear to be a comparison in Obama’s eyes.

      Well, now, explain to me how that works, cuz I don’t get it. We can carry out massive bombing raids till we wipe out the living, like we did in Kosovo, or we can strike selective targets, which won‘t really stop Gaddafi’s ground forces from killing civilians.

      I know Dum-bo feels safe in the WH and won’t bat an eye if we are attacked again, but if Libya turns into another Iraq, it will anger his base and cause his poll numbers to sink. That would be unbearable, and far worse than any natural disaster.

      POTUS had no other choice. On friday there was an uproar in Rio protesting O’s visit to Brazil. Our consulate was firebombed. In order to keep it quiet he had to involve us in Lybia in order to keep that out of the news here at home. Except for The Blaze I have not seen any coverage to that fact. Imagine, they are asking our savior to go home, they don’t want him there. He is in the city of Brazilia because of the security risk in Rio. And to think after he gave them billions of our money to develope their oil fields they treat him like that. Shame on them. Maybe Soros set him up in hopes that if anything happened he wouldn’t have to split the oil proceeds with Obummer. It’s a thought.

      Man, you guys will just find anything at all to complain about, huh? The French thing was a good move. France was the loudest voice against Bush’s intervention in Iraq. Obama made it show they would HAVE to keep their mouths shut until we finished the job. If you want to share the costs of a military action, no matter how justified, you still need allies. To me, this indicates that Obama learned the lesson of Iraq, and plenty of you haven’t!

      I hate to break up the war party..but theres this thing called the US Constitution which mandates CONGRESS to declare war, not NATO or the UN or anyone else. Or in the words of President Obama
      “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”

      Shame on them? Geez, what do you expect?! Their president is a Marxist and former guerilla fighter. Brazil is far-left territory, a Chavez satellite, and they do not view the fence straddler as their friend any more than Islamists do. Besides, he IS after their oil. The Toxic Narcissist thinks “the world is his and the fullness thereof.” Shame on us for electing lowlife Obama president.

      I like that we are sending a message to Gadhafi. What I don’t like is how the one world government thing is coming together. Thats more money out of our pockets. Doesn’t war help put a band aide on our economy? I know there isn’t much of a choice to use force, which sucks but I guess it’s a necessary evil.

That’s it. I desire to leave my children in debts up to their eyeballs because I’m such a compassionate father. Way to go Neo-Cons.

      Going into Libya is just plain WRONG! Why aren’t we impeaching this President? I am so angry with this man, I could jump up and down and scream…..this President should be kicked out of our country, along with his cabinet. There is absolutely no reason to get into a fight with Libya. Our soldiers are stretched too thin as it is. Where does Obama get off thinking that the American people will be ok with this action? We need to be putting all our efforts into protecting, or helping to protect ISRAEL. I have never in my entire life, and I am in retirement age, seen such a nasty, ignorant, selfish, un-American President. This man should be impeached. And, Americans should be calling the WH and/or their Congress politicians, screaming ‘foul’. I do not care about Libya. I CARE ABOUT OUR SOLDIERS WHO ARE IN HARM’S WAY. I am tired of fighting everyone else’s wars with my tax dollars! We really need to get rid of this man.

      From the Halls of Montezuma,
      To the shores of Tripoli;
      We fight our country’s battles
      In the air, on land, and sea;
      First to fight for right and freedom
      And to keep our honor clean:
      We are proud to claim the title
      Of United States Marine.

      We kicked ass the first time in Tripoli, during the Barbary Wars. We can do it again. Screw Ghadaffy Duck and blow up every one of his supporters. Then burn their fields and lay waste to their pastures. Onwards to Tripoli! I’m so excited!!!!

      @democratgirl

      I share your disgust and indignation for our alien- ‘n- chief, but not your anti-war passion. There is evil in this world, and only force from good men will overcome it… (think world or nation) !!
      However, I always get amused when passions rise and we start hearing calls for his impeachment. It’s like people always think of impeachment “AFTER” they elect a Senate with a majority party the same as the president – duh!!!???

      An impeachment trial is held in the Senate, and a two-thirds vote is required to impeach the Prez. Good luck getting 2/3′s of the Senate Dems to impeach him on anything . It’s simple really, if you wanted to impeach the President, we should have replaced another dozen Senate Democrats last November…(hindsight 20/20 reference). Of course, he won’t be there after the next election…(can we impeach him retroactively? :)) …rf

      “Half the harm that is done in this world Is due to people who want to feel important. They don’t mean to do harm but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle To think well of themselves”. T. S. Eliot
