Breaking: US Launches Military Action Against Libya

President Barack Obama authorized limited military action against Libya Saturday, saying Moammar Gadhafi’s continued assault on his own people left the U.S. and its international partners with no other choice. The Pentagon said 112 cruise missiles were launched from US and UK ships and subs, hitting 20 targets.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
U.S. military forces are launching an attack to destroy Libya’s air defenses, joining an international air campaign against the regime of Libyan Col. Moammar Gadhafi.
In a news briefing at the Pentagon Saturday, a senior defense official said U.S. forces would launch a coordinated series of strikes to destroy Libya’s coastal air defenses and radar installations and enable a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone.
“We’re on the leading edge of a coalition here,” the official said….
Key first strikes are expected along the Libyan coastline, where the country’s integrated and missile defense systems are located. “Once we do that, that would open up the environment where we could enforce the no-fly zone from east to west of Libya,” the official said.
Earlier today, an international coalition declared that it would intervene militarily in Libya. Now, the US joins that effort in an attempt to ”prevent further attacks by regime forces on Libyan citizens and opposition groups, especially in and around Benghazi,” according to a senior defense official.
Gadhafi said that “The international coalition will regret daring to intervene in Libya.”
In a statement following today’s Paris summit, immediately after which the international military intervention began, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “we have every reason to fear that left unchecked, Gadhafi will commit unspeakable atrocities.”
Obama said military action was not his first choice.
“This is not an outcome the U.S. or any of our partners sought,” Obama said from Brazil, where he is starting a five-day visit to Latin America. “We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy.”

Let’s see each Tomahawk is between 3-5 million dollars and they have launched how many thus far? lol We at least our chilren have plenty of money to pay back our debts since the economy is recovering so well.. That’s it. I desire to leave my children in debts up to their eyeballs because I’m such a compassionate father. Way to go Neo-Cons.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 10:57pmGoing into Libya is just plain WRONG! Why aren’t we impeaching this President? I am so angry with this man, I could jump up and down and scream…..this President should be kicked out of our country, along with his cabinet. There is absolutely no reason to get into a fight with Libya. Our soldiers are stretched too thin as it is. Where does Obama get off thinking that the American people will be ok with this action? We need to be putting all our efforts into protecting, or helping to protect ISRAEL. I have never in my entire life, and I am in retirement age, seen such a nasty, ignorant, selfish, un-American President. This man should be impeached. And, Americans should be calling the WH and/or their Congress politicians, screaming ‘foul’. I do not care about Libya. I CARE ABOUT OUR SOLDIERS WHO ARE IN HARM’S WAY. I am tired of fighting everyone else’s wars with my tax dollars! We really need to get rid of this man.

To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean:
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.
We kicked ass the first time in Tripoli, during the Barbary Wars. We can do it again. Screw Ghadaffy Duck and blow up every one of his supporters. Then burn their fields and lay waste to their pastures. Onwards to Tripoli! I’m so excited!!!!

I share your disgust and indignation for our alien- ‘n- chief, but not your anti-war passion. There is evil in this world, and only force from good men will overcome it… (think world or nation) !!
However, I always get amused when passions rise and we start hearing calls for his impeachment. It’s like people always think of impeachment “AFTER” they elect a Senate with a majority party the same as the president – duh!!!???
An impeachment trial is held in the Senate, and a two-thirds vote is required to impeach the Prez. Good luck getting 2/3′s of the Senate Dems to impeach him on anything . It’s simple really, if you wanted to impeach the President, we should have replaced another dozen Senate Democrats last November…(hindsight 20/20 reference). Of course, he won’t be there after the next election…(can we impeach him retroactively? :)) …rf
