AP: WASHINGTON — The unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months as weak hiring by private employers wasn’t enough to keep pace with a large increase in the number of people looking for work.
The Labor Department says companies added a net total 67,000 new jobs last month, down from July’s upwardly revised total of 107,000. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain, according to Thomson Reuters.
Overall, the economy lost 54,000 jobs as 114,000 temporary census positions came to an end. State and local governments shed 10,000 positions. The jobless rate rose to 9.6 percent from 9.5 percent in July.
More than a half-million Americans resumed their job searches in August, which drove up the jobless rate. When the unemployed stop looking for work, they are no longer counted in the jobless rate.

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 10:42amThere has been nothing but lies coming out of this administration.
It’s bad out here.
I heard some in the media trying to blame small businesses for holding off hiring people
“just because of loss of confidence in the market”.
WRONG—They are not hiring because there is NO WORK….
Many small businesses were tied to the residential and commercial construction industry and had to lay off all their employees AFTER having to borrow money to TRY and keep the business going. Employees gone….stuck with paying back loans and no money coming in and now facing the sunset of the Bush tax cuts for small business in January.
Small business will only thrive when the Marxist Occupiers get out of the way.

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 10:36amJust wait till BP starts laying off all the vessels they chartered for the clean up efforts. We have not even begun to see the effects of this oil leak… technically it wasn’t a spill. Within the next month or 2 , there is going to be massive layoffs in the GOM unless something changes. What’s a sailor to do on dry land?
I guess french fries float, right?

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 10:14amWe have allowed Unions and Politicians to destroy our industries in this country. Under their watch we have lost our Steele, Textile, Furniture, Paper, Tobacco and a majority of our Automotive industries just to name a few. Unions must be disbanded and outlawed and the politicians responsible should be brought up on criminal charges. The assets of the Unions and the politicians found guilty should be seized and given back to the American people.

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 9:55amI can’t even begin to put into words how my household feels – the stress, the emotional roller-coaster, the constant knot in the stomach…not knowing from one day or week to the next if my husband will have a job. As I mentioned in a prior post, he had been laid off (union commercial electrician) for 9 out of 12 months…living off of unemployment and my paycheck…our saving is now zero…we have trimmed all expenses as low as possible…and now that he is working we are just trying to dig upwards – we are treading water rather than sinking…but not moving out of the hole or getting ahead so we can brace for the next layoff. Then as far as being laidoff – it is day to day (hope and pray more ‘little’ jobs come out of the one your working)….push that layoff away for 1more day…doing this everyday. Then the media has the nerve to write articles that we are (or should) enjoy the time off…it is time to picnic in the sun and reconnect with those we love…THEY ARE INSANE!! In truth is: this is a time of high stress (not easy on the best of marriages)…tears…and living in fear. The only thing that sustains us is the knowledge God always provides. Faith!

Posted on September 7, 2010 at 7:54amHeidi586,
I know exactly what you are talking about. We lost my mother in October, I‘ve been trying to find a job and I’m now living with my father since her death. This household is kept running by his social security and retirement pay. I’m struggling to find a job so I can pull my own weight in this house. The knowledge that his retirement pay could disappear because its in the market is frightening; its frightening for him and myself. My prayers to God every night are for this country to wake up, for God to move His mighty hand and cover us, protect us from ourselves. But we have to do the hard work and get rid of the evil in our midst. Like everyone else, I can’t wait for November … I will do my best to get rid of every last incumbent and or progressive that is on the ballot. I pledge my life, heh my “fortune” and future to do so, to return this country to the great place she once was and will be again, God willing!

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 9:41amThe real numbers (underemployed, those no longer working, those that have never had a job) are so much higher. I know, let’s print more money and give more money away! That will fix everything during this summer of recovery.

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 9:31amAnyone really surprised? At todays fed wage rates, each new Fed job added by the Administration results in at least 2 private sector job opportunities disappearing and probably a lot more. And when these new fed employees get off coffee break and start regulating, the private sector will really shrink.

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 9:20amIn the WSJ article, it reports, “Fed officials expressed concern during the Aug. 10 meeting about the sluggish labor market and debated potential causes.” Meanwhile, the President “who has pushed Congress to support more job-creating measures, plans to speak Monday at the Milwaukee Laborfest. In addition to a small business bill languishing on the Hill, the administration is coming up with new ideas to promote job growth.”
Report Post »Here’s a clever thought: cut taxes on business instead of raising them! Maybe then, instead of sending their money to the government, they’ll spend their money on payroll. Why is this so complicated for our government to figure out?
In Time’s article recently on what happened to their Man of the Year 2008 (Obama), they tried to compare him to Reagan but bemoaned the differences between the economic downturn of the 80′s (which wasn’t as deep) and the current one. The main difference: the guy in the Oval Office’s solution. Again. Such a simple observation. Why is it so complicated and difficult?

” Or perhaps it is the unemployed who are refusing to work because they want to show their hate for the president?”……Wow. Did you even think before you typed this? I have relatives who have been trying hard to get work. Not one of them is refusing to look for work just so they can show their hatred for the president. Do you really think people want to go hungry, lose their homes, etc. just so they can show hatred for the president? That has to be the most idiotic comment I have seen on here. You have the nerve to call yourself flagwaver? or is it a surrender flag you are waving?

Posted on September 3, 2010 at 4:17pmWhy, yes… because of “hate” and “racism” people en masse are refusing to work when they’re losing their homes, their cars, etc. Is it “racist” to mention how moronic this sounds? If it hurts your feelings… trust me, it’s not meant as a racist comment… but one to show your complete ignorance to the situation of this little thing called “the economy!” Gosh, I “hate” whiney liberals that can’t take criticism to their argument(s)!!!!

Posted on September 12, 2010 at 5:38pmMy brother-in-law lost his job so I went to unemployment with him to file. He works part-time for a hardware store and told the case worker. The case worker told him NOT to claim the income from the hardware store. He did what he was told but when he goes back, he’s taking a recorder with him to get it on tape. This is one way to ensure a system collapse…. Pay out no matter what and drain the system until it breaks.
