World Leaders Launch Immediate Military Action Against Libya

PARIS (AP) — Top officials from the United States, Europe and the Arab world have launched immediate military action to protect civilians as Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi‘s forces attacked the heart of the country’s rebel uprising.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said after an emergency summit in Paris on Saturday that French warplanes are already targeting Gadhafi’s forces.

The 22 participants in Saturday’s summit “agreed to put in place all the means necessary, in particular military” to make Gadhafi respect a U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday demanding a cease-fire, Sarkozy said.

“Our planes are blocking the air attacks on the city” of Benghazi, he said, without elaborating. French planes have been readying for an attack in recent days.

World Leaders Launch Immediate Military Action Against Libya

Earlier Saturday, Libyan government troops forces stormed into the rebel capital of Benghazi, apparently ignoring a proclaimed cease-fire and potentially complicating any allied military action.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said after the summit: “The time for action has come, it needs to be urgent.”

France, Britain and the United States had warned Gadhafi Friday that they would resort to military means if he ignored the U.N. resolution.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also at Saturday’s summit.

A communique from the summit participants, referring to the U.N. Security Council resolution, said: “Our commitment is for the long term: we will not let Colonel Gadhafi and his regime go on defying the will of the international community and scorning that of his people.

“We will continue our aid to the Libyans so that they can rebuild their country, fully respecting Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

You are all missing the REAL super secret reasoning behind letting France, Britain, Canada and Hillary (where’s Egypt?) display their ‘nads on the World stage. Our brilliant President has a plan…a brilliant plan. While many think He is too busy in Brazil meeting with his communist organizer counterpart, trying to keep tabs on His March Madness puicks, and helping Michelle tend to the garden, he is pursuing an important agenda. While others fly sorties over Libya, Obama is carefully assessing the intelligence before acting. So far, no decent golf courses have been observed. The sand traps are well tended, but the greens suck. Until that changes, we shall not be moved!

This is sick and all who favor this are sick. What has America become? Hatred and Violence is raging amok among the worlds young. Where is the US headed? It is/has become so evil in the last few years since GWB sent our troops into Iraq and Afghanistan. The nation is broke but is wailing out at the world. Ghadafi is not a threat to the US. Only because Europe gets so much oil from Lybia are they attacking. If I was Ghadafi, there would be no oil fields left intact in Lybia so shove that up your a–es Europe and Obama.
Obama is destroying this nation and the majority of people seem to back him. What will you do when this nation looks like Kenya? Believe me, it is going to be like any other African nation. Tell it to your grand kids twenty years from now how much you have lost. I’m an old man with only a few years left. I gave time out of my life when a young man to the nation during Nam. To see the anger and hate inside this country grow since that time is heart sickening.
So have a go at it. Tear the country apart. Allow these Union thugs to guide you in just how to destroy the nation. When it is in chaos and all is lost, where will you go next. What will you do then when you cannot feed yourself, not to mention anyone else. Maybe when this nations population is decimated to 30% of what it is today, things will change for the better for the individual. What most of you young protesters do not understand. The nation has been the bread basket of most of the world. When it is gone, the worlds population will dwindle. For the green tree huggers that will be good for the planet, however not so good for humanity.
I remember the joke of what to do during a nuclear bomb attack back in the fifties. Bend over, grab your legs and kiss your A– goodbye. Well when there is no food even for the richest, a person may just bend over grab your legs and kiss the tail end. Enough Already!!!!

He is a hiss and byword. He abandoned his office to let leftists, socialists, and communists (princess nancy, dingy harry, andy, trumka, and spooky dude) to dictate his policy – while he fills in brackets and jet-sets to Rio. The level of hypocrisy involved is far beyond nauseating. It is really true treason in its most basic form. So many people have sold out this nation to the Internationalists’. I almost got sick listening to the Generals on tv hem and haw about the possibility US soldiers might find themselves under foreign command… Heck it’s not like it would be anything new since I consider the entire US Gov’t a Jewish Apartheid! I believe people like Lieberman, Schumer, Graham, and McCain should be immediately placed in front of a firing squad! O.K. we are missing something here. Saddam defies 40 United Nations Resolutions over many years before we go to war and the Dems say it was an illegal war all about oil and how evil the Republicans and George Bush were. Moammar Gadhafi defies one UN resolution and in 2 days we are at war with him, and everyone is happy. I know we hate Gadhafi but lets at least expose the Dems for being the “evil war mongers” that they are. And yes this war is really about the oil. Only when Gadhafi offer all of his oil to China did Europe get involved.

Yes, that is the reason why the EU is now intervening and not because, you know, he’s slaughtering his own people.

“Only when Gadhafi offer all of his oil to China did Europe get involved.”

Blatantly incorrect. France was immediately pushing for intervention long before that happened and often mentioned how they believed that progress on a no-fly zone was far too slow.

It is difficult for me to be compassionate because of the hidden Agendas. I understand the Left Agenda very well. We’re not fighting a war where good vs. evil, instead it is a war of who is going to be the dictator. They [the Left] are negotiating for how much they can get away with, at the expense of this tragedy. While Moammar tries to hold on to his piece of the action. This is not about the Libyans or their freedom. Please make sure that you understand this point. What You have is [Jack the Ripper] or [Ted Bundy] as your choices, neither one a good choice.

      @Valerie Summer

Unfortunately, where you get oil from directly means little for the overall price. It is a global market. Oil comes in various grades. Libyan oil is mostly light-sweet crude, requiring the least refining before it becomes a usable product. It is part of a global supply of light-sweet crude. Remove the Libyan supply and the total available supply is lessened. The price of all light sweet crude goes up. If you live in California, you probably don’t get your orange juice from Florida, but a freeze that destroys the Florida orange crop will still make your morning OJ more expensive.

I agree TXfarmer. People make comments without thinking of ramifications of actions or inactions. Why are we involved? Is it in the US National Interests? All actions, as selfish as it might be, should always be based on US National Interests. If it is, then we should fight all out. None of these half measures and nation-building afterward. So what if his people rebel? Are they better than Qhadaffi? I think we should question that. Did helping the Muslims in Bosnia help the US image in the Muslim world? We would be wise to sever entangling alliances and only fight when it serves our interests. People that have knee-jerk reactions should contemplate what our involvement in other areas has gotten us. Why is Libya so important that we need to go in there but not into Iran? Why not China? Doesn’t China run over its people with tanks? Let’s be consistent in logic and use common sense policies that are for the benefit of the US.

Well when you never spent a day of you life taking orders from someone other than your financial provider you never learn how to lead. He is a follower, he was in the State Senate of Illinois by voting PRESENT for a lot of bills, it proved that the State Senate was a place holder. The only reason he is even president today is that a lot of the electorate that voted for him was blinded by his skin.

Now they have to live with that and hopefully they won’t make the same mistake but I seriously doubt that.

“We will continue our aid to the Libyans so that they can rebuild their country, fully respecting Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

From what I understand about national politics, when one or more figures using military force declare a statement respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation, then more than a no fly zone is going to happen. Do not be suprised if someone sends troops in soon.

Remember that both sides are using the same hardware and from 5,000 ft on a small screen they all will look the same. This guy is not stupid as many people claim. He know this and that is why he moved into the city with his armor, to save it from air strikes, unless you have spotters on the ground and since we are not going to put troops into Libya on the ground who will do the spotting? You don’t trust civilians on cell phones because as you see in Afghanistan it puts neighbor v neighbor.

My question is, what do UN forces do when they see tanks from both sides battling it out of the ground? Are rebels considered “citizens” that the UN has vowed to protect? Seems to me this is not simply enforcement of a no-fly zone, this is an act of war on behalf of the UN. If we are involved in attacking Libyan military equipment and installations, we have just become directly involved in the Libyan civil war, like it or not.

Prepare for UN peacekeeping troops (US included) on the ground within the month.

Something hit alright, whats with his face!

I kinda like the idea of the US sitting one out! Its about time the rest of the world stepped up to the plate and handled something instead of the US. I think if we are there supporting logistics intelligence etc thats enough. BUT I think things will not play out well here remember you are dealing with an arab nation and the others are not going to like this. The radicals operating within these nations could very well interpret this incursion by the UN as an act of war.
What about Yemen, Bahrain, Tunisia and other ME countries that have had killings committed by govt troops against UNARMED protesters?!

I think we are witnessing the beginning of a war! The first war of the 21st century, as Gerald Celente has warned about. I dont always agree with him but I am with him 80-90% (he gets on some of that conspiracy stuff that is too ridiculous), the guy has one heck of a track record for being right. The US needs to stay out of it and pull our guys out of Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan(hit n runs) if this escalates into a feared “world war” they will be completely cut off, surrounded, if things escalate.

“No one starts a war – or rather, no one in his senses ought to – without first being clear in his mind what he intends to achieve by that war and how he intends to conduct it. The former is its political purpose; the latter its operational objective.”

      – Military theorist Carl von Clausewitz

Clausewitz’ “On War” is one of the foundational documents taught in the nation’s war colleges. These are graduates schools for field grade and senior officers. His relevance in the modern world is debated, but no one has proposed a better theor for understanding war. As a guiding theory, how does the current operation square?

The US can certainly crush Khaddafy’s military … then what? What is the desired end state? How does air power achieve this end? How does air power ensure that the targets are government forces and not rebels? How will the world community react to the first collateral damage?

Perhaps the operational commanders have asked these questions. Perhaps the political leaders have thought these issues through. I would like to have the goals articulated in advance. Robert MNamara once described Vietnam as an opportunity to conduct aan experiment in waging war without arousing the passions of the [American] people.. That did not end well.. No, Libya will never become another Vietnam. US interests can still be damaged by failing to achieve an objective. The military will execute the orders of the civilian political leadership, but that leadership has an obligation to explain both the objective and how the military instrument can be used to accomplish that objective. If the objective is limited to removing Khaddafy without an alternative in place, how is this superior to Rumsfeld‘s flawed concept of operations in which Saddam was removed and ’someone else‘ would do the ’nation building’?

And once again we do the same as Bill Clinton did to fight al Queda, throw cruise missiles at the problem and hope the target is what you aimed at…

The reason that al-Queda used passenger jets is that they don’t have an Army budget with R&D to create their own cruise missiles. 9/11 was the terrorists version of a cruise missile attack, the same attack that Bill Clinton used to try and kill Osama bin Laden in 1998 when he used 4 cruise missiles to hit training camps in Afghanistan. He missed and al-Queda returned fire with American Airlines jets as cruise missiles and if it was not for a failure on the targeting mechanism on flight 93 we would have lost the White House or even Congress.

So another Democrat Commander in Chief fails at fighting against military style aggression in the world. Maybe he should send in the new Black Panthers, tell them that “Crackers” are in charge of the country…

“The goal is the destruction of US imperialism and the achievement of a classless world: world communism. Winning state power in the US will occur as a result of the military forces of the US overextending themselves around the world and being defeated piecemeal; struggle within the US will be a vital part of this process, but when the revolution triumphs in the US it will have been made by the people of the whole world. For socialism to be defined in national terms within so extreme and historical an oppressor nation as this is only imperialist national chauvinism on the part of the “movement.”"
