Yahoo! Fires Bureau Chief After Caught Saying GOP Okay Having ‘Party With Black People Drowning’

Yahoo! News Washington bureau chief David Chalian has been terminated for remarks he made during a Monday webcast of ABCNews.com’s coverage of the Republican National convention in Tampa, Florida.
“David Chalian’s statement was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo!” TheBlaze was told in an emailed statement.
“He has been terminated effective immediately. We have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended,” the statement adds.
Earlier in the day, Chalian’s comments came to light.
“They’re not concerned at all. They’re happy to have a party with black people drowning,” he said, referencing the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., as Hurricane Isaac set its sights on the Gulf Coast.
You can hear him deliver the remarks here.
UPDATE — To Yahoo! News’ credit, they aren’t shying away from owning up to callous remarks made by one of their former employees. They even tweeted out their apology:
UPDATE II — Shortly after his termination was announced, Washington Week editor and PBS correspondent Gwen Ifill tweeted the following:
Tweets like that could help explain why Ifill was left off the list of 2012 presidential debate moderators.
Unsurprisingly, after tweeting that she stood with “God’s gift” to journalism, Ifill was met with a heavy barrage of Twitter snark:
And how did she respond to being criticized? By embracing the whole Republicans-are-totally-racist narrative, of course:
The link she provides takes you to this article which, of course, argues the GOP is really racist.
UPDATE III– Chalian has formally apologized for his “inappropriate and thoughtless joke”:
Here’s his statement in full:
I am profoundly sorry for making an inappropriate and thoughtless joke. I was commenting on the challenge of staging a convention during a hurricane and about campaign optics. I have apologized to the Romney campaign, and I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Gov. and Mrs. Romney. I also regret causing any distraction from the exceptional coverage of the Republican convention by Yahoo News and ABC News.

Here’s what he said, “They are happy to have a party with black people drowning.”
That’s flat-out slanderous (a lie), and while it does not have measurable monetary damages, it does have damages in the form of how millions of people vote. Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a “slut” because for an unmarried woman, she admittedly has an abnormally large sex bill every year. It was one man’s opinion of a specific women. He didn’t insinuate prostitution, he merely used an insulting word to describe her self-admitted, hyper-fornicating habits. At the very worst, it was a harsh comment; whereas, David Chalian lied and said the GOP rejoiced at the thought of black people drowning. See the difference?
We are free to make observations and use words to describe them that sting, but we are not free to tell bold-faced lies about one another. I don‘t want to live in that version of ’conservatism’.

Posted on August 30, 2012 at 2:16amI agree. There are many people here and elsewhere that are whining about conservatives “denying” freedom of speech. What they aren’t getting is that freedom of speech is the freedom to say whatever you want (short of inciting violence), but NOT to avoid the consequences of commentary. Freedoms come with responsibility. Exercising freedom of speech in commentary on those statements is no different. Freedom of speech does not apply when working for a private organization. What he said cost him his job because he is representing Yahoo’s and ABC. For them to fail to hold him responsible is implicit support of his commentary. With a statement this racist, that fairly drips with hatred and rabid liberal zealotry, he wrote his own death warrant to his career with that company. It was NOT a mistake. It was NOT a slip of the tongue. It was the result of a man representative of the unilateral agenda of the socialist radicals, devoid of the usual sham “neutrality” snidely expressed by the mainstream media. This generation of “reporters” are anything but that. They are socialist activists hell bent on achieving utopia through the same failed social engineering of eastern Europe. And why not? Obviously Barack Obama hasn’t failed. George Bush is still failing according to the American socialist elites. Just like communist Russia didn’t fail using the exact same policies. We‘re just stupid because we can’t see what is so clear to them.

He tried to exonerate the upper teir of the media but made it clear that the base of the media outlets today is hopelessly leftwing and biased to the point of compromising the integrity of what should be neutral reporting. That the base is staffed by indoctrinated, lefty wing, ideologues who don’t have the integrity or the professionalism to keep their politics out of reporting…and who actively work on portraying the democrats and the left in a favourable light.
David Chalian is one of these people….a hopeless ideologue bereft of professional integrity and business ethic. This is a real problem, not because it exists..but because the media still tries to tell us otherwise.
From the editor’s piece:
“When The Times covers a national presidential campaign, I have found that the lead editors and reporters are disciplined about enforcing fairness and balance, and usually succeed in doing so. Across the paper’s many departments, though, so many share a kind of political and cultural progressivism – for lack of a better term – that this worldview virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times.
As a result, developments like the Occupy movement and gay marriage seem almost to erupt in The Times, overloved and undermanaged, more like causes than news subjects.”
Chalains’ actions are exactly what this piece says they are.

They reemed Bush over Katrina yet I am not seeing BHO loosing any sleep over “Blacks drowning” while he is at universities trying to lure young voters.

Doesn’t everyone know by now that DEMONCRATS are the racists? Just look at what they do – awe, you can’t help yourself, you poor black person… here, have some food stamps, have some welfare… Meanwhile the inner cities spend unbelievable sums on schools that don’t teach reading, writing, history, or math. Seriously, in Philadelphia, they spend over $15,000 per student, and the schools are FAILING. You know, those schools that have run by teachers unions for the last 40 years. Gee, the union bosses are rich, the school administrators are rich, seems like the only ones suffering are the poor students…

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 1:49pmYou’re not the brightest are you? The First Amendment is a check on the government. It has nothing to do with how private media companies conduct business. This is not a 1st amendment issue, it’s a private company making a free market decision…and a wise one.
“So they fired them for speaking the truth?”
What “truth” is that? Why is Obama campaigning while black people are drowning? Are there black people drowning?

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 2:36pmSpeaking the “truth”? How do you come to the conclusion that this Yahoo was speaking the truth? How can you say the GOP would relish black people drowning? My goodness, man, that is absolute hogwash. I seem to recall Ann Romney starting out her speech with the invocation that we keep those whom are in the storms path safe. Now grant you, she wasn’t specific….I mean, she just said the people in storms path be kept safe, she didn’t say “keep the white people” safe, just keep all safe.
Get a clue!

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 2:39pmWhat about “David Chalian’s statement was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo!” is a First Amendment issue? Yahoo is a free company in a free country and can discriminate between right and wrong, good and bad as they see fit. He didn’t fit – obvious troll is obvious.

Posted on August 30, 2012 at 10:49amThey fired him for expressing an opinion – something that anyone purporting to be a journalist isn’t supposed to do, especially in a public way. It’s that “objectivity” thing that goes along with what used to be called “journalistic ethics” – a notion that has gone by the wayside as editorial boards have chosen to be propagandists rather than purveyors of news. Also, the First Amendment is designed to protect POLITICAL SPEECH from GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE – not to protect lame employees who end up making their employers a laughingstock. In other words, the White House is in violation of the First Amendment when it hires domestic terrorists to threaten the lives of conservative bloggers (see Brett Kimberlin) and threaten radio stations and television stations with licensing problems if they air commercials mocking Obama (see Indiana Live casino, circa 2008) and hack the Wikipedia pages of conservative black women in order to make vile and disparaging comments about her.
