Some interesting developments at Idaho branch of Brigham Young University are making headlines. According to The Student Review, an independent newspaper run by students at the college, a new sign recently appeared in the university’s testing center. It apparently read, “No skinny jeans.”
Here’s the flier that the Review claims was being distributed:

Now, for those of you who don’t know, skinny jeans are tight pants that are worn by women (and sometimes men). Apparently, the college’s Idaho affiliate has had some recent controversy surrounding the clothing choice.
The Review reported that the college held a question and answer session in September with both students and faculty. During the discussion, BYU-Idaho’s Advancement Vice President Henry J. Eyring was asked whether skinny jeans violate the university’s honor code.
“It’s useful for us to realize that fashions will come and go,” Eyring reportedly said. “There will always be some tempting new style.”
The code, which is available on the university’s web site, says that clothes shouldn’t be form-fitting. For men, it reads, “Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting. Shorts must be knee-length or longer.” And for women, it says, “A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting.”

One student claims that someone was asked to leave the testing center because she was wearing skinny jeans. “Some girls wear skinny jeans that are just too skinny … so they ask us not to wear them,” the student explained.
While some people understand the need to comply with the university’s code, others see the move as an unneeded affront. “I think it is pretty ridiculous,” explains student Zach Cooper. “We already aren’t allowed to wear shorts or flip-flops, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if they banned skinny jeans as well. This school is crazy.”
Gawker‘s Maureen O’Connor e-mailed Eyring and was able to confirm that there is, indeed, a debate over the article of clothing raging at BYU-Idaho. In an e-mail to O’Connor, Student Services and Activities Vice President Kevin Miyasaki wrote:
We have not identified “skinny jeans” as a specific violation of the dress and grooming standard. We are aware of the incident and the Student Honor Office is working with the Testing Center to address the issue. [...]
The Testing Center has not made any new standard, nor has there been a ban of a particular piece of clothing. The effort of the Testing Center as well as with other employees and students is to encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code.

On Wednesday, however, the controversy appeared to be coming to an end, with the BYU campus posting a message on Facebook claiming that the “issue reported” has “been corrected” (i.e. the office ban has been overturned). It seems the chaos surrounding skinny jeans has been settled — for now, at least.
Do you think skinny jeans are inappropriate?

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 10:26amAnd they SHOULD go to another school, but the skinny jeans is the least of the reasons. They are being indoctrinated into a cult and are handing over their religious freedom, their soul and their money to a false prophet. They will burn in hell for turning away from the Lord.

Care to actually elaborate on that? Or are you just drive by trolling again? It did dawn on me that perhaps you might wonder why so many people slam you. I would assume its the lack of proof behind your arguments/statements. Granted not many do here but when they are in agreement, you dont have to. You oppose, lets hear it, explain it, at least it’ll enlighten us as to why you insist on sticking around somewhere you obviously dont agree with. This may be the only attempt I suggest this to you. I do feel like you are a PITA troll but I thought I’d give it a shot. Oh and Merry Christmas and enjoy the holidays. God Bless you too ;)

Posted on December 8, 2011 at 11:42am@ Your Sensei – Wait, would you say the same about Catholic and Jewish schools… that they’re indoctrinating their children to follow in a false belief system?
Also, how is teaching children in a faith-based environment any less indoctrination than sending them to a public or state-run university?
And does it necessarily follow that if people believe something different than you then they must be either stupid or lying? Please don’t practice slandering people without thinking or you become guilty of doing exactly what you blame others for doing to you…

Not too many people aside from rappers making the big paychecks wearing tight clothes, baggy cut-off pants, and hats on sideways. Get used to it and start practicing now to be an adult. Posted on December 8, 2011 at 12:16am@Encinom: As regards under garments worn by the Mormons—–sacred?, yes…magical?, no. I suppose you also use that same logic to refer to preachers’ clerical collars as magic neck bands or muslim overcoats as magic robes. How about the rosary? Fairy beads perhaps? NO? If not then I can only deduce that you are just bigoted against Mormons. Their school in Idaho has an honor code to prevent young people from looking like whores or drug dealers in their apparel. By dressing conservatively the person’s attitude tends to follow suit thus a general sense of respect is maintained. Your comment reflected anything BUT respect.

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 10:50pmI see skinny jeans all day long at the college and probably 95% of the people wearing them really shouldn’t be. Even if they can sorta-kinda pull it off, they’d generally look better with a nice pair of boot cut jeans, imo. I hate skinny jeans.
But a flip-flop ban? I’ve known a lot of Mormons in my life, none of them were afraid to wear flip-flops. Safety issue maybe? That was our high school’s excuse for banning them. Seeing as I live in Florida though, everybody just ignored the dress code regarding flip-flops. Personally, I never heard of anyone dying over it…

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 7:12pmTo be admitted you have to sign an honor code/dress code. EVERYONE who attends BYU-IDAHO knows this – they have no business being “afronted” or surprised. If you want to dress like a man-whore, metro sexual, drug addict go ahead do it @ ISU or Univ of Utah or wherever. And besides it is colder than the artic in Rexburg – who would want to wear flip flops ! :) There was also a time you couldn’t wear farmer overalls or hats.

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 7:08pmThis is the Rexburg campus – it used to be known as “Ricks College” it is a small conservative community in Idaho. YES – it hass a dress and honor code ( thank goodness) but I am always surprised that a student at this school would be “affronted” by the expectation that one shoulud abide by the code they agree to and sign as a condition of admission. If you want to look like a man-whore – metro sexual drug addict” then wear the skinny jeans somewhere else. I was a student many years ago at BYU here in Utah – coming from California I had to get all new skirts as mine were too short. I was thrilled to be at a school where the girls couldn’t go bra-less and have their **** hang out of halter tops ..etc. it was a refreshing change from the Stanford/ Berkeley community I was used to.

Posted on December 7, 2011 at 9:22pmI used to attend BYU Provo and liked it…for the most part :) That place is weird. I love the idea of the honor code, it’s really a great thing to have in such a crazy world as we have – BUT – with that being said, the kids who work the testing center are still just kids. They often times get caught up in their little world of “restrained/repressed everything” and will usually take things to extremes when given the chance. I got turned away once because the whiskers on my face were too long – it really bothered me because I had just walked a half mile through snow, it was cold, I had just waited in line, studied hard for this test, and only had so much time before having to get back to work or whatever else – and here this person was telling me that THEY thought I was violating the honor code. Skinny jeans rarely look good, don’t get me wrong, but this kind of judgmental day-to-day life already exists in hundreds of microcosms on campus already.
