Britain Considers Social Media Shutdowns: Could U.S. Be Next?

Social media has drawn heavy scrutiny in the U.K from the government, and if the riots continue, Prime Minister David Cameron may push for the drastic step of blocking certain internet communication platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Blackberry instant messenger.Britain Considers Social Media Shutdowns: Could U.S. Be Next?

Wired is reporting that P.M. Cameron has been considering the “pre-crime” blocking of social media websites to avert more riots, and allow authorities to catch up with arrests of suspects shown rioting on surveillance camera footage or inciting violence through social media. Prime Minister Cameron addressed the British House of Commons Thursday, saying:

“Free flow of information can be used for good. But it can also be used for ill. So we are working with the Police, the intelligence services and industry to look at whether it would be right to stop people communicating via these websites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.”

Britain Considers Social Media Shutdowns: Could U.S. Be Next?

Iran Election Protest 2009

This step is not a novel idea, but would be the first time a major western power has taken the drastic measure. In its last gasps of power, the regime of Hosni Mubarak shuttered Twitter in Egypt, though it didn’t prevent Hosni from ending up in a cage. Twitter took center stage in a  short-lived attempt to protest a stolen election in Iran in 2009, but was quickly stamped out. As many of those protestors found out, you can tweet a photo of your protest, but in an authoritarian state, it will likely paint a digital bullseye on your back.

Social media has indeed played a role in some of the most seismic political changes of the past 10 years, including the Egyptian revolution, but now we are seeing the flip side of this remarkable technology. Just as the internet has become an artery of the global jihad, social media sites are a tool to rally the masses — whether for peaceful protest or destructive, anarchic riots. And we now have proof this is as true in London as it is in Cairo.

Some in the U.S. may look at this phenomenon and think “why should we care?”

Because as we know,  it could be coming here next.

Many U.S. pundits have criticized the British welfare state, and pointed to lax liberal European policies on everything from immigration to crime as reasons for the unrest. Some consider the U.S. is hardly a free market, capitalist utopia — with 45 million Americans on foodstamps, and 50% of our citizens not paying a dime to the federal government in taxes each year. So arguably, many of the factors that are at play for the riots in the U.K., are also at play for those of us across the pond.Britain Considers Social Media Shutdowns: Could U.S. Be Next?

But, would the U.S. government ever be so brazen as to cut off our access to online communications?

Earlier today, police in San Francisco jammed cell phone communications to prevent planned protests there. And many of you might recall the “Internet Kill Switch” bill that Congress bandied about earlier this year. It would allow the president to unilaterally shut down the internet — and only because he says so. This goes a few steps beyond targeting merely one social media site — which is all the more reason to believe the U.S. could be capable of cutting its citizens off from various modes of communication.

In this brave new world of technology and the state, we have been trained to constantly worry about an individual with a backpack bomb, or a car full or fertilizer. Today, governments face the reality that anyone with an internet connection can incite a mob and shake the very foundations of society. The U.S., at some point, may face this threat, but in doing so will it go too far?

As the U.K. looks to reassert control over its own people, it perhaps should strike a note of caution here at home. In order to protect citizens from each other, a once great empire and staunch ally may find itself claiming powers generally held only by tyrants.

Perhaps Americans should begin to watch events in the U.K not as idle curiosity, but a possible prologue.

twitbook and flitter are not the problem, and dare i say it goverment to a certain extent is not the problem. lets get real here people, you have to start with the household and the parents are the ones to blame ( for the most part ) in my household my kid is not allowed to use the internet. when i got a letter from his school telling me that he needed a twitbook account and a flitter account for his schooling i went off. i called a meeting and told the school it is not the internet and social media sites that are to teach my kid. i have fought the school system time and time again to teach and not to babysit. every night we goto the library and i supply my kid with extra studies on the topics they are studying and it works. there is no need for kids to be in front of computers 8hrs a day. and yes, i know your thinking it so ill say it right now. my kids doesn’t have a cell phone, playstation, or even a tv in his room. rules are when you can pay for them you can have them. so to sum it up parents need to stop be buddies with there kids and start being partents.

but i will say this, in times of civil unrest i think the goverment should suspend service to these places. and don’t confuse that with “take it away forever” im all for given police an upper hand in helping them surpress violent outbreaks.

You can bet on it, and when they do “turn it back on”, it will be regulated and controlled so that a fraction of what is out there now will be available then. They have wanted to do that to the internet since Obama was elected. By the time he gets done, we will have NO FREEDOM LEFT! Has he finished manning his personal security force yet, you know the one that is BETTER EQUIPPED than the United States Armed Forces??? WAKE UP AND SMELL THE NAPALM! There are advantages and disadvantages to Facebook. It is addictive. Anyway I have friends who are all over politically. What I have found with my friends is that the conservative leaning friends rarely ever bring up politics. Oh one friend does. The other two who have only did once or twice each. The rest of my conservative leaning friends never put out anything political.
Contrast that with my liberal leaning friends at least five or more post political commentary. Most of it has at least a sentence or more about how “evil” the rich, republican, tea party or conservative are. Nnot one of my conservative friends ever bashed the president. Maybe they know I voted for him. I was vocal about my support for him. Anyway I find that contrast is nudging me out of being left leaning. I did rebel against my parents politics. I am beginning to think my parents made sense. A few years ago I was pretty progressive and I will keep some aspects. But I have moderated my own views toward the center.

Here in America, that genie is already out of the bottle. Flashmobs are organized through cellphones, and you’d have to shut down every cellphone in the USA to squash them. It would be a logistical nightmare, because most of us abandoned landlines a long time ago. And the new government-sponsored Safelink program supplies free cellphones with monthly prepaid minutes to anyone who receives welfare or foodstamps. You see the problem here?

The more socialist we (U.S.) become the more likely that these kinds of things will happen over here.
The article stated that 50% of Americans don’t pay taxes. I believe that all American citizens should pay taxes and the only way this will ever happen, I’m afraid, is when and if we implement a national sales tax to replace our current system. Also, and I know that this will reduce the Donkeycrats voting roles, those who currently don‘t pay income tax or at least don’t own property should not be allowed to vote.

Now the Blaze has removed the poll also. I realized around the time Glenn was leaving FOX, that it was also MSM at that point. Now I have realized that Glenn is a Neo-Con. He is telling us to vote for progressive RINOs. He must also be affiliated with the Military Industrial Complex. Ron Paul will stop the machine that controls us and has nearly destroyed us. That is why he said, It is none of our business if Iran has nukes. Our Founding Fathers and most people today, do not want us policing the World. All the powerful corporations ( and there is a laundry list of them) that make military equipment, want the wars to continue. Our founding fathers would recognize Iran’s Sovereignty, and would expect Iran to respect America’s Sovereignty. Our Government is for the Common Defense, not OFFENSE. The global elite have to try and stop our flow of information, to succeed in their agenda. Otherwise they will lose this long, silent battle, they have been waging for over a century.

“Great” Britain is a totalitarian oligarchy. The folks are nothing but subjects. It is tyranny for sure. They watch your every move. You can’t even take a crap with some camera watching you wipe your a$z. Their mascot for the Olympics next year was originally a guy dressed up like a one eyed camera. Can you fricking believe that?

That will be the signal to start shooting. Then we will see who is serious about freedom and who is full of P_ss and wind. The pessimist in me says most of you wont make it out of the basement.I hope I am wrong. It is becoming a really sad state of affairs in the once free land of America.

The politicians have been saying that hacking into our computer systems by China would be considered an act of war, so if BO cut off the internet to Americans, would this also be deemed an act of war? After all, he is the known enemy of America.

There is some type of top secret internet type operation being constructed at Scott Air Force Base near Bellville Illinois. Some guys that I know that work there say that there is a red phone out there for Obama to call into. Sounds like an internet cutoff switch operation to me. I could be wrong. Everybody is mum about it but the population of network engineers is way too big for it to be only “Airforce business”. Have you noticed that whenever there is civil unrest in a country, the internet is the first thing they go for. Knock out the people’s ability to communicate. I know I am not saying anything that you guys don’t already know. It just makes me feel better.

    Now that’d be interesting.
To see what blazers would have to say if it did happen here.
This place would light up like 20,000 Christmas trees plugged into one outlet.
Powered by the biggest coal fired plant in North America.
Delivered by diesel every night till doomsday.

Obams needs to be schooled that the WH and every other buiding in DC runs on a coal fired electric plant. We can thank old dead Bobby (KKKer) Byrd for that law his first year in office.

Indeed they would shut down any media save for their own forces usage; the fact also is that CA is supposed to be considering a similiar measure to shut down any and all media, cell phones and the like in the event of a riot or ‘social disturbance of any kind.’

Stop Anarchists from using “Social Networks, they use the phone, or text, or meet. Violence must be met with violence, that is the way of the jungle. or the savannah, or the tundra. or the seas.
