Broke: USPS Plans to Cut 35,000 Jobs

WASHINGTON (AP/The Blaze) — With no financial relief in sight, the U.S. Postal Service is pushing ahead with planned cuts to more than 260 mail processing centers around the nation, part of a billion-dollar cost-cutting effort.
In a statement Thursday, the cash-strapped agency said it had completed a review of closings to mail processing centers it had proposed last fall. Based on community input and other factors, the post office said, it will move forward with consolidations involving virtually all of the 252 facilities on the list, as well as up to 12 new locations, beginning in mid-May.
Of the 264 facilities, roughly 41 won’t be closed or consolidated right away as the post office conducts additional reviews.
The consolidations are expected to result in a loss of roughly 35,000 jobs, which the post office hopes to achieve mainly through attrition. The agency described the move as a necessary cost-saving measure because of declining mail volume as people and businesses continue switching to the Internet in place of letters and paper bills.
The 12 locations added to the list include those in Owensboro, KY; Washington, PA; Cardiss Collins (Chicago), IL; Gaylord, MI; Staten Island, NY; Mankato, MN.; Champaign, IL; Atlanta, GA; Corpus Christi, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Mid-Florida, FL; and Butte, MT.
“The steps we are taking now will put the Postal Service on a strong financial footing for decades to come,” the agency said in a statement.
The estimated $3 billion in reductions are part of a wide-ranging effort by the Postal Service to quickly trim costs, seeing no immediate help from Congress. It is seeking to close or consolidate more than half of its nearly 500 mail processing centers.
Because the consolidations typically would lengthen the distance mail travels from post office to processing center, the agency also would lower delivery standards for first-class mail that, for the first time in 40 years, “will eliminate the chance for stamped letters to arrive the next day,” according to the Associated Press.
Last week, the Postal Service warned it will lose as much as $18.2 billion a year by 2015 unless Congress grants it new leeway to eliminate Saturday delivery and raise the price of a postage stamp by as much as 5 cents.
It is asking Congress for permission to make service cuts and reduce annual payments of about $5.5 billion to prefund retiree health benefits. At the request of Congress, the cash-strapped agency agreed to wait until mid-May to begin closures so lawmakers would have time to stabilize its finances first.
But in recent weeks, the Senate and House have stalled as lawmakers differ widely on costs, the level of financial oversight and the prospect of widespread postal closures.
Sitcom characters hardest hit.
The Postal Service, an independent agency of government, is subject to congressional control on major aspects of its operations. Earlier this month, the Postal Service said its quarterly loss ballooned to $3.3 billion amid declining mail volume and said it could run out of money by October.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who is pushing for legislative changes that would stop or delay mass closings of mail processing centers, described the proposed closings as counterproductive. He and 26 other senators recently signed a letter to congressional sponsors of postal legislation seeking to prevent cuts to first-class mail delivery.
“At a time when the Postal Service is competing against the instantaneous delivery of information from email and the Internet, slowing down mail delivery service will result in less business and less revenue, and will bring about a death spiral for this institution,” Sanders said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on February 25, 2012 at 10:24pmHow would anyone deliver your mail. The USPS can do it far cost effective. Fedex and UPS will not deliver letters or catalogs. They just deliver boxes and something like a big envelop/priority mail. The major problem is that the USPS must deposit far more money into their pension/retiree healthcare funds than other governmental agencies. Why? Because Congress in their infinite wisdom passed a law requiring them to do so. I believe it was the Democrats in control of Congress that passed this law. Also, several Presidents have raided their budget/pension funds and spent the money elsewhere. The USPS is self supporting, but it is hard when Congress takes the funds forcing the agency to borrow money to meet obligations. Clinton and the Democrats raided it, but I don’t believe Bush did. I am not sure about Obama, but the way he blows money it is likely.

Like I tell my leftist friends when we start debating, the government screws up EVERYTHING it touches, and you want to put them in charge of your healthcare? I cannot think of one government agency that does a better job than it’s private sector counterpart does.
The post office should be a massive win for the US government. It’s practically a monopoly. People still send 99% of letters, bill payments, etc via USPS. The USPS is inept and should be privatized. For crying out loud, quit the complaining about Saturday service and just shut it down already. That would save a ton of money right off the bat.

The problem with the Post Office is “management”. They don’t know how to make decisions. From one week to the next directives change. You need to have a plan and stick to it. I work for the USPS and frankly I think it is another deliberate attempt to censor the publics right to privacy. You can still expect privacy by mailing a letter anywhere in the world. NOT like sending an email that can be intercepted anywhere along the way. You are losing another piece of freedom “they” don’t have controll over………..think about it. The unions will find a number of federal sympathetic judges to tie this up in the courts for years to come. 0bama will likely pay some lip service to the struggle of the union backed employees, and the media will make certain that the masses will hear very little in the way of details. 0bama will gladly walk on the backs of these employees to get elected. The union employees are useful cannon fodder. Example, where I live there were two main businesses being throttled by the unions. A Goodyear pland, and a steel plant. When Clinton became president, there were almost 1500 employees at this particular Goodyear, and even more with the steel works. When Clinton left office, Goodyear had just over 400 employees, and the steel plant was gone. He didn’t do anything but use these people for his own goals. There were expendable.

Most companies had to stop offering pensions due to the “Enron & Worldcom” legislation that our great government decided to protect us from ourselves again many years ago with fully funded future pensions. The only way private companies can offer anything is in 401K type of programs.
I believe there are plenty of hard working employees that could be hurt by these actions but also remember that the USPS has operated with a budget guaranteed by the public, not really the ideal situation for innovation, both fiscally and technologically. If the 35K job reduction is in attrition, who’s complaining? This SHOULDN’T affect the unemployment number, unless they’re lying again.

Name something else that you can send from the East Coast to the West Coast for that amount of money??
