See the Pictures: Brothers Arrested for Attacking Miami Pilot on Plane & Chasing Him Through Terminal

MIAMI (AP) — A man punched an American Airlines pilot who kicked him off a flight from Miami, and he and his brother then attacked the pilot again before bystanders tackled the brothers in the terminal, officials said Thursday.

Brothers Two Men Arrested for Attacking Pilot on San Francisco Bound Plane, Chasing Him Through Terminal at Miami Airport

Police arrested Jonathan and Luis Baez at Miami International Airport Wednesday night for allegedly assaulting a pilot.

Jonathan and Luis Baez, both of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, were arrested at Miami International Airport. They had been aboard American Airlines Flight 1755 bound for San Francisco on Wednesday night, according to an arrest affidavit.

While the plane taxied away from the gate, a flight attendant noticed 27-year-old Jonathan Baez was sleeping and had not buckled his seat belt, police said. She tried to wake him, but she told police that Baez was unresponsive and appeared to be intoxicated or on drugs.

The pilot turned the plane around and returned to gate D51.

“As we always do with these things, we’d much rather deal with it on the ground than in the air,” American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said Thursday.

The pilot and flight attendant then woke up Baez and told him to get off the plane, police said.

“He was apparently barely compliant at that point,” Smith said. “He was exhibiting symptoms of intoxication. He was not walking well when he went up the aisle.”

Luis Baez, 29, decided to join his brother as he was being escorted off the plane. As the brothers walked toward the aircraft’s exit door, they became belligerent, and Luis Baez told the pilot, “When you fly to San Juan I will have you killed,” according to the arrest report.

The brothers walked off the plane, but then Jonathan Baez returned and punched the pilot in the face and hit the flight attendant in the shoulder when she tried to intervene, police said.

Both brothers attacked the pilot again in the jet bridge and chased him in the terminal, according to the arrest report.

Other flight crew members and passengers held down the brothers until police arrived.

“There was a scuffle that took place, so about three or four of us went out there and tackled the guys. There were two of them and I guess the pilot ended up with some contusions on his face. So we just did what we needed to do to help out,” Ken Venting of Scotts Valley, Calif., told KGO-TV in San Francisco.

The Miami-based pilot suffered cuts and bruises to his face and blurred vision, and he told police he was afraid Luis Baez would follow through on his death threat, according to the police report.

Another pilot filled in and flew the plane carrying 176 passengers and six crew members to San Francisco International Airport.

Jonathan Baez was held Thursday on $9,000 bond on charges of battery and aggravated battery. Luis Baez was held on $12,500 bond on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

Miami-Dade County jail records did not show if either brother was represented by an attorney.

“I think it‘s fair to say that both these gentlemen won’t be flying with us again,” Smith said.

Aside from the TSA NOT being able to screen the minds of all people; why do we report using the word “gentlemen”? There is NOTHING gentle about what they did? Do words mean anything anymore? The media has used this same term for murders, rapists, etc. When will America go back to saying directly what they mean? Using words that are clearly a reflection of the person?

Tenjax “they should be charged with attempted air piracy for the assult and see life in prison.”

There is no honor in charging people with crimes they didn’t commit. You should be ashamed of yourself. Its too bad many cops do that sort of thing on a regular basis when “they” think someone needs extra punishment.

That being said, I would have done a hell of a lot more than tackle them if I was one of the passengers involved.

I know everyone here wants to crack on the TSA…and believe me, I do too…

But seriously? You can buy alchohol right in the terminals. They both could have gotten smashed while waiting for their plane. The TSA then would have absolutely nothing to do with it. The bars in the terminal would have been the cause.

As for others saying that the TSA should have been there to tackle them…the TSA is only at security checkpoints if you all haven’t noticed. There is no security by terminals.

That is why people stay in resorts with fences and guards they are all entitlement babies. We had to leave northern N.J. because they have taken over and ruined once nice rural communities.. I have travelled a lot through Spanish speaking countries and just returned from Spain two weeks ago and can tell you when people talk about hot blooded they are not engaging in stereotypes. I speak Spanish and have found Dominicans, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans and others to be open hearted, kind, full of the love of life, but also easily offended by things we Americans wouldnt think twice about. Regardless what liberals tell you, people are different. That threat against the pilot was made and to save face, to reinforce a sense of machismo among his peers, it has to be taken seriously.

Myself being Cuban-American, I think Anglo Americans generally stereotype all Spanish speaking people as the same, for example all Spanish speaking people regardless of race/ethnicity/origin are lumped into the “Hispanic” category…a term most Spanish speaking people never use. I find it laughable to compare say Dominicans with Spaniards, too me that’s like comparing Englishmen with Jamaicans. Even Spaniards…all my grandparents were from Spain, people from different regions of Spain have different dialects and customs. The stereotypical “hot-blooded” Latin did not apply in the slightest to my Galician relatives from the North-West Iberian peninsula who are very mild mannered, soft-spoken (Galicia is actually one of the 7 Celtic nations), my relatives from Valencia on the Mediterranean coast were more outspoken, loud…but nowhere near that of Cubans who are very loud and talk with their hands, overly emotional at times (think Ricky Ricardo). Mexicans I’ve never known to be particularly “hot-blooded” however I’m not as familiar with them and I realize they have different regions, half of the illegals I encounter actually speak little to no Spanish and speak Mayan Indian language.
