‘Brown Relief’: NPR Features Story on Latinos‘ Joy Over Shooter Being a ’Gringo’

When NPR featured a story on “brown relief” Wednesday — the supposed collective joy of the Latino community over the Tucson shooter being a “gringo” — the question of who should be more offended, “browns” or whites, is a good one. But the more obvious question is, “Why are these comments allowed and Juan Williams’s thoughts on Muslim clothing not?”
The story, “Across America, Latino Community Sighs With Relief,” was featured on both radio and on NPR’s website. And it’s nothing short of remarkable, not for its insight, but for its callous, racist, language. Author Daisy Hernandez, a Latino who covers feminism and once worked for the New York Times, writes:
I wasn’t the only person on Saturday who rushed to her Android when news came of the Tucson shooting. I wasn’t looking however to read about what had happened. My auntie had already filled me in — ”Someone tried to murder una representante. People have been killed,” she’d reported. What I wanted to know was the killer’s surname.
My eyes scanned the mobile papers. I held my breath. Finally, I saw it: Jared Loughner. Not a Ramirez, Gonzalez or Garcia.
It’s safe to say there was a collective sigh of brown relief when the Tucson killer turned out to be a gringo. Had the shooter been Latino, media pundits wouldn’t be discussing the impact of nasty politics on a young man this week — they’d be demanding an even more stringent anti-immigrant policy. The new members of the House would be stepping over each other to propose new legislation for more guns on the border, more mothers to be deported, and more employers to be penalized for hiring brown people. Obama would be attending funerals and telling the nation tonight that he was going to increase security just about everywhere.
In short, the only reason the nation is taking a few days to reflect on the animosity in politics today is precisely that the shooter was not Latino. [Emphasis added]
The story doesn’t end there. Hernandez confesses she cared nothing of the victims at first:
I admit sadly that it was only after I saw the shooter’s gringo surname that I was able to go on and read the rest of the news about those who lost their lives on Saturday and those who, like Rep. Giffords, were severely wounded.
If the story has any redeeming value it’s that Hernandez admits these things “sadly.” But in the wake of the shooting, it seems hardly appropriate that a story such as this should be featured on a government-sponsored news outlet only days after the tragic event. An outlet that fired a longtime employee for much less just months ago.
Williams, fired over the phone, didn’t refer to anyone as “arabs” or even come close to using offensive titles when referring to his anxiety when he sees “Muslim garb” on a plane. That didn’t matter.
Maybe then the option of who this will end up offending most is behind door number number three: Juan Williams.

Posted on January 13, 2011 at 2:31pmWell, I can understand that, but it’s not law-abiding citizens of Latin heritage that should be concerned, nor should anyone EVER place any blame on our citizens for what an undocumented and/or illeagle person from another country who happens to be of the same race as them, do! Undocumented or legal, a person whom commits a crime does so at their own volition. The fact that someone was able to enter the country so easilly is a different story all together.
Lets never lose the sight that Americans are AMERICANS, and should be afforded full protection under the constitution. But I don‘t have a problem if a cop that pulls me over for a speeding ticket asks me if I’m a legal resident. I am, but that’s not the point! I think they should ask that question…. If a person can’t answer it, I believe the officer should provide a warning ticket for them to produce proof at a later date and let them go. If the person doesn’t provide proof, then a warrent is issued and if he again falls into custody, law enforcement can now has reason to hold!

Report Post »Planeguy
Posted on January 13, 2011 at 3:20pmMy point is; the Arizona law as it was intended was to hold suspected undocumented people. I think a way around it is to get as much info on these folks as possible, give them a ticket or a warning to provide proof at a later date; when they don’t show up, they are now “in the system” to be held should they come under law enforcement (LE) scrutiny in the future!
To me it’s a simple solution if LE is handcuffed (pun intended) by civil rights issues. Chances are, they’ll be apprehended again for something and at that point there is a legal basis to hold them. If they don’t come under LE scrutiny; “good!” They’re obeying all the other laws of the land!
Iguess I’ve been to South & Central America too many time and know the vast majoriety of the people are good, hard working folks that just want to get ahead. I also live in the NE-USA and don’t have to deal with it on a day-to-day basis, and only offer this as a point of discussion!
Regardless, legal residents should have nothing to fear, nor should anyone hold any bias towards them because of thir undocumented compartiots.
Just my opinion
Report Post »untameable-kate
Posted on January 13, 2011 at 3:48pmI agree with you and thank you for admitting that since you are from the NE you don’t have to deal with this problem firsthand like we do in the border states. Posted on January 13, 2011 at 2:58pmGRINGO is a slang Spanish and Portuguese word used in Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries, principally in Latin America, to denote foreigners, often from the United States, the United Kingdom, or Westerners in general (but not in Brazil where the term applies to any foreigner, including other Latin Americans). The term can be applied to someone who is actually a foreigner, or it can denote a strong association or assimilation into foreign (particularly US) society and culture.

I remember about 2 months after 9/11 a Mexican comic relating how they were so relieved that it was done by Muslims – “The look like us but they wasn’t us – phew!” and a Muslim comic (Amed Amed) saying that he started claiming he was Mexican not Muslim when going through the airport.

It is easy to lead off an arguement with woulda‘s and coulda’s and shoulda’s but any hypothesis derived from such discussion is spurious at best. Had Laughner been a Mexican-American I don’t think there would have been too much of a change in the rhetoric. Do not forget it is only a recent thing where Mexican-Americans have started voting dem. they are typically a very conservative group of people very much focused on family values.
Now, had this been a migrant worker or an illegal alien? Yes the rhetoric would have been ramped up, but what the lady on NPR fails to recognize is that the democrats are first to jump on a bandwagon: see Iraq war. Had this been an illegal alien one can assume the right would have gone off the deep end calling for more border security but the left would have been right there with them because that would reflect the mood of the country.
Again, conclusions drawn from hypotheticals are not conclusions. They are guesstimates.

Insults are best disarmed by a wall of apathy), and I can understand why she’d feel that way. I’m sure a lot of people here felt at least a little relief when the killer turned out to be a nut job instead of a Tea Party member who snapped (the fact that the Tea Party is being blamed for it anyway is beside the point).
I get the impression that she knows her attitude was selfish and she’s ashamed. Again, I can relate. I work in a profession where aircraft accidents can result if I don’t do my job correctly. Every time there is an aircraft accident, every person I’ve worked with in almost 20 years has immediately wondered the same questions: “What is the aircraft’s identification number? Did I work with that aircraft?”
I know that attitude is selfish, and I actually make an effort to suppress it so I can be more concerned about the accident victims than about my self-preservation. Still, the thought still comes into my head every time, and I don’t know a single person in my profession who would say they are any different (and I’ve met hundreds over the years, and this topic comes up a lot).
What I see is that Hernandez was brave enough to admit to something that she’s somewhat ashamed of. Please try to be a little more sympathetic to her.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 8:17am@JZS – How can you possibly disregard the slang term given to the shooter by virtue of his race and condone any part of her message when her goal was to determine the RACE FIRST and then the tragedy. You are in incompetent thinker and have no clue that racism comes from Hispanics also. You have gotten so hung up in MSM that you forget that white people can be victimized also by race. People like you are what‘s wrong in this country and we don’t need you opening up your pie hole to spew stupidity anymore. But we do defend your right to be stupid, we defend your right to be ignorant, we do defend your right to say things that make no sense and that are irrelevant. So congratulations for exercising your rights that are given to you regardless of how intelligently you use them.
Anyways, that lady is extremely racist as her main concern was race to avoid so called backlash against Latino/Hispanics. Just to add more fuel to the fire, there is currently a tv station labeled “Immigrante TV” if you use antennas in Texas. They talk about white people as racists and that the United States is hurting those trying to come into the country, but they FAIL to bring up that they are all breaking the law when not legally coming into this country. I wonder what idiot is funding this and why it is being allowed to air on my television. I am sorry, but we need to expedite the deportation of ALL illegal immigrant regardless of the impact on our economy. Health care and welfare costs would drastically drop while food prices would rise…I am willing to take that risk.
By the way, do we have to afford rights to those that aren’t legal American citizens? I never read that in our Constitution that foreigners were supposed to be given rights when they are illegally here to begin with. I am geniunely interested in this as I really don’t know what “rights” illegals should have. Don’t get me wrong, I would not hesitate to follow the law if illegals fell under that statute.

Posted on January 14, 2011 at 6:00pmTHE ASSASIN WAS GRINGO, BUT WHO PAYED FOR THE BULLITS?
Mexicans should be citizens because Mexico belongs to the USA. We won it in the Mexican War. Its time for US troops to jump in and destroy Mexico’s Drug Cartel Government. We can rape the land and steal its oil.
