(AP)Brock Lesnar retired from mixed martial arts after Alistair Overeem stopped him with one vicious kick to the body at 2:26 of the first round in their heavyweight bout at UFC 141 on Friday night.
Lesnar is the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view star and the former heavyweight champion, but his return from a 14-month injury absence ended with Lesnar staggering and crumpling against the cage. He couldn’t recover from a kick from Overeem (36-11), the 6-foot-5 Dutch kickboxing star making his UFC debut.
Lesnar (5-3) is a former NCAA champion wrestler and pro-wrestling star who rose swiftly to the top of MMA. But he has fought just three times in the past 2½ years while dealing with bouts of diverticulitis, a lower-intestinal ailment that nearly killed him.
“I’ve had a really difficult couple of years with my disease, and I’m going to officially say tonight is the last time,” Lesnar said. “This is the last time you’ll see me in the octagon.”
The 34-year-old Lesnar‘s announcement stunned fans who realized he faced a difficult matchup in the UFC’s traditional end-of-the-year event in its hometown. The matchup was a classic MMA clash of styles, with Lesnar‘s brutal wrestling contrasting sharply with Overeem’s vicious striking.
Overeem is three years younger but much more experienced than Lesnar, hurting the former champion at least twice earlier in the round with knees to the stomach while Lesnar failed in his attempts at takedowns.
“I promised my wife and my kids if I won this fight, I would get a title shot, and that would be my last fight,” Lesnar said. “But if I lost tonight … you’ve been great.”
Overeem will get the next shot at UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, who watched from a seat near the octagon.
Overeem is a champion kick boxer who has fought in multiple promotions over the past decade, winning titles in Dream and Strikeforce with nearly unbeatable striking and size. He joined the UFC in September, finally presenting his formidable skills and intimidating physique to the sport’s largest audience.
UFC President Dana White might have given an immediate title shot to Overeem if the timing had been better, but Dos Santos only claimed Velasquez’s belt in early November. Overeem welcomed a debut against Lesnar, even guaranteeing a knockout in the first two rounds.
“Today was all about bad intentions,” Overeem said. “First or second round, I promised. … I worked on my takedown defense a lot. Brock is an excellent wrestler, so I had to step up my game.”
The undercard at the MGM Grand Garden featured two upsets: Lightweight Nate Diaz won a bloody unanimous decision over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone with superior boxing, and Johny Hendricks stopped welterweight star Jon Fitch with one punch just 12 seconds into their bout.
Lesnar hadn’t fought since losing his heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez in October 2010, cancelling a bout against Junior Dos Santos last June in Vancouver after another bout of diverticulitis, the lower intestinal ailment that nearly killed him a year earlier.
Lesnar became the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view star in remarkably short order after taking up MMA, and the hulking former NCAA wrestling champion and fake pro wrestler kept his unparalleled popularity during his absence. Lesnar used the time off to modify both his diet and his standup game, attempting to improve his biggest weakness.
As it turned out, Lesnar couldn’t improve enough to contend with the supremely skilled Overeem, who embraced Lesnar afterward.

Posted on January 1, 2012 at 10:44pmI did WWE during the ‘02 and ’03 just to make enough money to get by, then I switched to MMA. What I found was that the fake stuff you see in WWE is replaced by the corruption in MMA. Of course this guy took a fall. He was ready to go and lined up some deals. I’ve been on the inside and know how all these outfits operate.
I was a contender for the WWE title but my acountant explained to me that I’d make more money taking falls than by kicking a-. Being the capitalist that I am, I took the money, got hit a few times and have now retired with a beach home on the coast sans brain damage. I‘m not saying you shouldn’t drink beer and watch those shows because you paid for my retirement. But I am telling you it’s all fake, the MMA as much as the the WWE. Oh, and as far as deaths go in MMA , from the time MMA became a sanctioned sport (roughly 15 years) there have only be 3 deaths in the world,, and only one was from a sanctioned promotion, and it was due to a pre exsiting condition. Now go google any other major professional sport and see how many deaths they’ve had in lets say the past 15 years….heck make it just the past 5 years and you‘ll still come up with more deaths then in MMA’s entire history.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 7:44pmAs a practitioner of MMA, I have to say that a lot of you are very ignorant in how much physics and anatomy goes into Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (The two fighting styles everyone in MMA studies, regardless of whether they study others). These competitions are not just for ‘two idiots beating each other up’. It’s two sportsman testing themselves, in order to see how good they are. It is true, that some of them do it for fun, but that is not at the heart of MMA. If all one did was go to Kickboxing class (and Muay Thai is essentially kickboxing) and train, doing what the teacher said, many of them would never find that a lot of what they’re doing could be improved by actually fighting. Lo and Behold, MMA is how they do it. If you want to see how ignorant these fighters really are, come into a Muay Thai or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class some time. You’ll be amazed at how much Physics is incorporated. Thank you for reading and God bless. Happy new Year.

Precisely. MMA is extremely chess-like. And anyone who hasn‘t studied and scrutinized his opponent’s strengths, weaknesses, and strategies months ahead of time is destined for humiliating failure. Posted on December 31, 2011 at 6:06pmThe one thing that Lesnar could never do is defense. He has no defensive game. No way to take a punch and attack them on the way out. His only defense was to hid until the person paused the punches and then got back up. Well that was not going to work in this fight. His fight against Shane Carwin should have ended in the first round when he was hiding and running out the clock. You can do all the weights and tossing heavy rope around all you want but if your training camp will not work on what happens when you get hit, because they are to scared to hit you, you will lose.
Lets hope Dana White will toss him some more money in another 14 months to try all over again. He will be at least 2-3 wins away from trying for the belt now and he does not want to do the grind all over again.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 7:33pmI would disagree in that Lesnar not only showed he could take a punch, survive, recover and win the fight, he also had an amazing amount of speed for a man of his size. It’s clear from the result of the Lesnar/Carwin fight the ref made the correct call in not stopping it. Personally, I wanted Carwin to win, but what Lesnar did in that fight was impressive.
If he had been a trained fighter earlier in his life (besides the wresting), I wonder how long he would have stayed on top. I’m not a fan of his, per se, but he was fun to watch for the short time he was a UFC fighter. It’s also good to Overeem break out of the K-1 arena. He’s always been impressive looking, but you could tell he hadn’t reached his potential. Good for him.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 5:34pmPersonally, there should be a law against MMA.. I find this type of fighting repulsive.. those who watch this sort of stuff have issues. What kind of person gets pleasure out of mean beating the hell out of each other?? Not I! God help us!

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 5:51pmIts OK Abbygirl. Most women do not understand the sport. Women would rather put a man down, for life, with words and attitude. The result is the same.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 5:30pmBrocks weakness, all along, has been his complete inability to handle getting tagged in the face. He falls apart when it happens, more than any other top heavyweight. Brock was made to order for Alistair, a big, fast, puncher and kicker.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 4:54pmyou have to search for it, and most of them are removed by ufc, i found one. doesn’t look like that brutal a kick, the guy just wasn’t able to handle it. there were people who thought lesnar was hype all along. search for cro cop kicks and see how he kicks straight to the temple knocking people out, those are brutal kicks.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 4:46pmAs a HUGE MMA fan , it’s been amazing to see what Brock Lesnar has accomplished in such a short amount of time . He’s the biggest draw in UFC history . For him to have had back to back career threatening bouts with this disease and to have come back to fight again both times is truly incredible.
Report Post »LIBSALWAYSLIE
Posted on December 31, 2011 at 4:45pmI watched the fight, the kick landed perfectly. Lesnar got his butt wooped, but took it like a man. For the first time he showed some humility, and I’m sure he earned some respect.

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 4:55pmYou’re spot on , that liver shot was like hitting a bullseye . The first knee to the stomach was punishing too . He tried to act like it didn’t hurt but you could clearly see the effects .

Posted on December 31, 2011 at 5:13pmExactly, the kick hit the target, and Alistair does kick hard, very hard. When a hard kick lands in the right spot, no one can withstand the pain.
