Budweiser Threatens to Yank UFC Ads After Nazi Tattoo-Clad Fighter Allowed to Compete

Budweiser Threatens to Yank UFC Ad Over Dana Whites Homophobic Comments and Brandon Salings Nazi Tattoos

Brandon Saling's questionable tattoos. (via Bloodyelbow.com)

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a fast-growing, action-packed but controversial sport in America. To some, it is the most exciting 1-v-1 combat there is in sports. To others, it is overly violent and celebrates the baser impulses in society.

But this story, courtesy of Business Insider, would go far beyond the usual debate about UFC, assuming the veracity of the facts in question. And as a result, sources claim Budweiser is considering pulling all advertising from the UFC.

Budweiser is not known for being uber-choosey about the organizations it sponsors. Still, a Nazi-tattoo-sporting, alleged sex offender proved much too much for the King of Beers to bear, and so it has threatened to pull its advertising campaign with the mixed martial arts brand.

“We’ve communicated to the UFC our displeasure with certain remarks made by some of its fighters, and they have promised to address this. If the incidents continue, we will act,” Budweiser told Ad Age

This dust-up all comes from a series of bizarre allegations, quoted from Business Insider, that state:

UFC president Dana White used the word “faggot” in a video; presenter Joe Rogan used the C-word to refer to a female blogger; and one fighter, Brandon C. Saling, was allowed to compete in a UFC-affiliated event, according to Big Lead Sports, even though he is a convicted sex offender who wears Nazi tattoos. The picture above is Saling’s police mugshot, taken after he was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl.

And if you’re wondering which tattoos are Nazi-inspired, it’s the small “88” on his upper left collar. The Anti-Defamation League describes why:

The eighth letter of the alphabet is “H.“ Eight two times signifies ”HH, ” shorthand for the Nazi greeting, “Heil Hitler.” 88 is often found on hate group flyers, in both the greetings and closing comments of letters written by neo-Nazis, and in e-mail addresses.

Other sports have had to wrestle with image problems in the past, resulting in strict policies for players on and off the field. Perhaps the UFC could be on the cusp of reining in executives and competitors in a similar way.

Regardless, these are very serious accusations, and clearly have caught the attention of a major advertiser. The Blaze will update this story as more comes out.

This story has been updated from its earlier version.

thug until the cops got there. The ladies purse and all her belongings were handed back to her and all the guys got a hug from the appreciative woman. This is the stuff they do all the time.
Are there a few of knuckleheads in MMA? Sure there is, but they are in an absolute minority. MMA may help Men in this country learn once again about being real Men, not the girlie-men we are raising now.

Tiffany Gabbay….. I really dislike stupidity and ignorance comes in a close second to it. I am just going to assume your ignorant on this subject, but being your writing about it… well that makes you….
The link you have in your story says he is gonna get fired, in the past UFC has tossed sponsors for vague Nazi references.
One fighter hit another after the fight was over and was fired 5min after he got to his dressing room. Big name too, name another sport that plays like that.
3,000 bucks a ticket near ring sure sounds low class to me, all types of celebs, sports stars, oh and Marcus Luttrell you know your bosses friend. He sits with Dana at some events, his charity is linked with the UFC, but I guess to you he is just white trash.
Where is your story about prefight fights, you know like at boxing… oh wait they don’t allow that, prefight=fired.
Where is your story about how they just use these fighters letting them get k.o.ed time and time again… oh wait they dont. Even partnered with the Marines to study traumatic brain injuries, in a rather extensive program.
Fighters fight, after the fight they hug and say sweet nothings to each other, then thank God, or their training camp. Kids should look up to these guys.
Dana said ******…. I read you worked for republican groups…. but here you are complaining about someones speech in an article about some guy that slipped into a 3rd party organization. Why does it matter Dana said ******? Hurt your feelings

What if I told you that there was a MMA / UFC fighter who had “WHITE PRIDE” Tattooed acrossed his chest. Now, what if that fighter had a nice video segment produced on how he is an idol to his people also of ANGLO extraction. The WHITE PRIDE was palpable in the piece and the narrator was very supportive of this WHITE PRIDE guy and how he is an example to the WHITE youth in his “community.” Now what if I were to tell you that this exact thing really happened? How do you feel? Well it did happen but… the fighters name is Cain Velasquez and the tattoo spelled out brown pride. How does that make you feel? aconversationaboutrace dot com

Find those whom compare to these in the UFC, Pacman Jones, World Peace, John Rocker.
“UFC is not known as a high class outlet nor are most of the brutes it comprises big embracers of etiquette.” Could be wrote about all of our Military, a certain % of them are less then what we would want of them. Just like the UFC that % is low. A high point in both is Brain Stann.
“Whether one is a fan of the fighting competition or not, many still argue that UFC is furthering the degradation of society by glorifying some rather nefarious characters.“ Oh a journalist trick ”many still” doesn’t that really mean you say? So what nefarious characters are you talking about? Jon Jones, George Saint Pierre, Matt Hughes, Matt Hamill, Junior Dos Santos, Anderson Silva, Randy Couture, Rich Franklin, Ben Henderson? Really I want to know who is a nefarious character in the UFC.
Some would say your over your head writing for a school newspaper Gabby, others would say you dont research things yourself to find truth behind what you write about. Still more would say that you dont actually have your own thoughts that you just follow the belief structure of others and hold tight to it because you can’t think for yourself. Everyone I know is disgusted by what you have written here, because it is obvious you know nothing about what you wrote.

I am a huge fan of MMA fighting sports and the UFC. What many of you DO NOT KNOW IS… the vast majority of the pros in the UFC are Church going God fearing good guys in every way possible. These guys are also VERY PATRIOTIC and respectful of everyone they come in contact with. They even respect their opponent. They may do a lot of trash talking prior to the fight, but once the fight is over many of them bow to each other and sometimes hug each other out of respect for each other. One fighter ( I cannot remember who) put it beautifully one day… “Getting your a** kicked in front of a crowd of 15-20 thousand people and a couple of million watching on TV is the most humbling experience in your life”. Amen to that. Another thing to consider, these guys never back down from law-breakers. google “mma fighters rescue” and similar string of words and you will find articles from around the country and the world where they step up to save someone from harm or being robbed. The most recent occurred a couple of weeks ago. The day of his big fight to retain his Belt for the Light-Heavy Weight title, Jon Jones wanted to go to a park and meditate for awhile to relax. Upon arriving they heard a woman screaming and pointing at some guy running away. First Jon’s Coach ran past the hispanic woman and after the thug, but within moments he was overtaken by the athlete in the bunch, Jones. Jon caught up with the thug in a matter of momments knocking him to the ground then put a leg lock on

Very well put. I also am a fan of MMA as a sport and have seen many inspiring UFC-signed fighters acting with honor inside AND outside of the octagon. I think the problem is that many sports organizations are too slow to pull athletes who break the law or act with unsportsmanlike behavior … all in the name of the almighty dollar.

I like a good fight between willing combatants as much as the next guy, but that’s a load.

Sure there are some good decent guys in the UFC. But there are a lot of complete and utter douchebags too. Way too many for them to be called a miniscule minority. I‘d have a difficult time arguing that it’s a minority at all.

But then when you‘ve got dana white running the organization and joe rogan as the face of it I guess you couldn’t really expect anything else from the rank and file.

You’re right Dave. MMA is actually a bastion of honor and hard work in a world gone mad. Many of it’s fighters have come through a crucible of bad upbringings to become good devoted family men. It is a shame that they get their head pounded for a living, but that is another discussion.

The other issue here is that this is classic PC double standard on Budweiser’s part. Cain Velasquez is a Mexican MMA fighter that has “Brown Pride” tattooed on his chest, odd that nothing was said about his message. Also, while I’m not of fan of allowing unrepentant criminal dirtbags into the MMA, God has a way of punishing the stupid, and this clown will probably be handed some severe beatings by his “minority” opponents in the ring.

Guevarra, Mao, Taylor, Pot, Marx, pretty much any major Soviet politician, Musslini, Stalin, Castro, Ho Chi Min, any current major Chinese politician, any Laotian politician since just before the Vietnam war, and Africa has so many throughout man’s history which surpass Hitler that there is not sufficient room.

@avgconservative, you’re an idiot. Budweiser didn’t kill anyone drinking and driving. The dumbass that consumed alcohol and then drove is the individual that killed another individual. That’s the equivalent of blaming the gun for a murder even though someone has to pull the trigger. Get a clue on life please.

WHen did Budwieser kill a soul. Don’t get me wrong, I can not stand Bud since they became a foreign company. But I don’t think they killed anyone. Just like the automobile manufacturers that made the cars, or the oil companies that made the gas for the cars, or the tire company that made the tire. You see where this is going. People kill, put the freaking responsibility where it belongs.

Yeah, and I say the dumb arses who were out driving around while Bud drinkers were on the road were just asking for it. They were probably driving in a provocative way, so it is THEIR fault for luring the drunk driver into the accident just as much as it is the rapist’s, uh, I mean DRIVER’s fault.

I’m going to try not to flame you too badly for your abysmal ignorance and inability to properly utilize logic. So I will simply remind you that: 1) Print and tv ads for alcohol are subject to restrictions here in the U.S.; 2) the FTC has repeatedly found that advertisers are NOT targeting consumers under age 21 with existing ads; 3) no manufacturer of alcohol pins down a person, forces him or her to consume it, then straps them behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. If you blame Budweiser for drunk driving statistics, I’m sorry to tell you that YOU are actually part of the problem: you are refusing to place the blame squarely on the individual‘s poor choice and instead placing it on a company that hasn’t done anything.

That is ridiculous! You blame Bud but not the car, the wheel, the pavement, the stop sign blown thru, and least but not last the DRUNK sob behind the wheel.

Can you even get drunk off of Budweiser? It’s about as close to water as you can get without it actually being water.

Come peel human beings off of steering wheels, handlebars, traffic signs like I do, and you’ll change your mind. No, I understand completely what you are saying. You don‘t understand what I’m saying.

We who rescue/resuscitate, patch together, and put body parts on stretchers know when the Bud Man was involved. Their glorification of all their products aren’t so glorious when you get the pictures I get.

Alcohol is a legal drug. Meth is an illegal drug. It doesn’t matter which one you use, you still are addicted and intoxicated by either. AND you still have the same potential to ruin someone else’s life.

When another driver invites the Bud Man into their vehicle, remember… his Bud’s for you.

Good for Budweiser. Yank them. Make UFC think about the trash they are throwing out there as fighters and promoters of their brand. I’m all for people beating the crap out of each other in a sanctioned sporting event, but policing the people representing you needs to be done. Common sense UFC.

Very few people deserve a brutal death. Raping a 12 y/o girl is a qualifier.

How about fasting and praying that he receives a true conversion of heart, repents and turns to the Lord God? Jesus Christ suffered and died for all sins, even the most grievous of sins.
