‘BULLSH** From Rolling Stone’: Journalist Attacks Magazine‘s ’Kill Team’ Story

We linked this story on the blog earlier today, but it’s worth some real estate on the front page.

Yesterday, independent, experienced journalist Michael Yon wrote a scathing critique of Rolling Stone‘s recent story on the Afghan “Kill Team” and how members of that group were caught posing with corpses. According to Yon, it’s “BULLSHIT.”

Yon would know, he was embedded with the 5/2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) in Afghanistan — the same brigade that housed the soldiers now in question. Yon explains that in his entire time with the brigade, he never witnessed anything remotely suspect:

The brigade gave me open access.  I could go anywhere, anytime, so long as I could find a ride, which never was a problem beyond normal combat problems.  If they had something to hide, it was limited and I didn’t find it.  I was not with the Soldiers accused of murder and had no knowledge of this.  It is important to note that the murder allegations were not discovered by media vigilance, but by, for instance, at least one Soldier in that tiny unit who was appalled by the behavior.  A brigade is a big place with thousands of Soldiers, and in Afghanistan they were spread thinly across several provinces because we decided to wage war with too few troops.  Those Soldiers accused of being involved in (or who should have been knowledgeable of) the murders could fit into a minivan.  You would need ten 747s for the rest of the Brigade who did their duty.  I was with many other Soldiers from 5/2 SBCT.  My overall impression was very positive.  After scratching my memory for negative impressions from 5/2 Soldiers, I can’t think of any, actually, other than the tiny Kill Team who, to my knowledge, I never set eyes upon.

He goes on to paint Rolling Stone‘s decision to include video of soldiers — not a part of the “Kill Team” — shooting Afghan men on a motorcycle as deceptive. Again, he would know — he had the video before Rolling Stone did:

Rolling Stone commits a literary “crime” by deceptively entwining this normal combat video with the Kill Team story.  The Taliban on the motorcycle were killed during an intense operation in the Arghandab near Kandahar City.  People who have been to the Arghandab realize the extreme danger there. [...]

The killing of the armed Taliban on the motorcycle was legal and within the rules of engagement.  Law and ROE are related but separate matters.  In any case, the killing was well within both the law and ROE.  The Taliban on the back of the motorcycle raised his rifle to fire at our Soldiers but the rifle did not fire.  I talked at length with several of the Soldiers who were there and they gave me the video.  There was nothing to hide.  I didn’t even know about the story until they told me.  It can be good for Soldiers to shoot and share videos because it provides instant replay and lessons learned.  When they gave me the video and further explained what happened, I found the combat so normal that I didn’t even bother publishing it, though I should have because that little shooting of the two Taliban was the least of the accomplishments of these Soldiers, and it rid the Arghandab of two Taliban.

Read the rest of Yon’s thoughts here, including his call to action against Rolling Stone.

Our troops will not only be demonized, but is is likely they will be butchered in Libya, and then drug into court for crimes against humanity over obama’s war. I am convinced this is a big part of the agenda to put them into harms way.

The radicals want to put them into Gitmo type prisons and then take our weapons to attack Israel. I fear for our troops, our country, and for Israel. Praying for them all daily.

Rolling Stone is a comic book for chronics. Amazing that it’s considered “literature,“ or ”journalism” by anyone. Every article reads like lines from the movie “Almost Famous”: “I was given full access… I could go anywhere at anytime… they trusted me… I was one of their own… then, I just made stuff up…” The rag should be called more appropriately, “Dazed and Confused”: “I love high school girls. The older I get, they stay the same age…”

Rolling Stone is a garbage magazine for music. I stopped reading when they kept trying to tell the world CamperVanBeethoven ws the best band ever. In the words of David Lee Roth “Wanna know why critics love Elvis Cosello? They look like Elvis Costello.” And if you don’t understand what he meant by that(cuz I like EC) he meant they only like what they like and aren’t open to anything else. As far as serious journalism goes, the best stories they ever did they ganked from someone else. Look war is an ugly business, people die. They’re supposed to,numbnuts. But then again most of you would hate my answer to war. Its like my dad said “If your gun clears leather, kill’em all.”

Rolling Stone saw these pictures and started drooling over the anti-military propaganda they could push. The people at Rolling Stone are scum just as the soldiers who were in the “killing squad” are. They singled out 5 soldiers who were probably scumbags before they ever put on a military uniform. I have had two best friends in the Marines and have been around many of their marine buddies when visiting and always felt welcomed (except for the ragging on each other but we’re guys its what we do). 99% of all military members are great to be around. Just as with anything else there are going to be jackasses in every population.

Yeah nothing new here, since these photos came from a German News source so Rolling Stone is nothing more than an illiterate paper version of a website like Huffington Post. Sites like this crawl the web looking for news that is not available in the US and then makes it look like their own, kind of like plaigerism that pervades the MSM.

You’re correct. It was General Stanley McChrystal. He is a good, good, man.
He Is a Soldier’s soldier. He was perfect for his assignment in this World War III.
The troops respected him. Our military is diminished by his absence.

Not to worry though Mom4times. We still have stalwarts like Admiral Mikey Mullen who is all for Don‘t Ask Don’t Tell sensitivity training for our troops in Afghanistan.

Gen. McChrystal was brought down by a jerk(with)off at Rolling Stone. Now Rolling Stone is doing it again with the Stryker Brigade.Do not think for one nanosecond they would not do it to General Petraeus if they could.

“WAR IS HELL”…,to include THIS one.Just know this…,your soldiers are weary.President Barry Dunham pays hollow lip service to them.they know it.
      Now Libya?

There is no one at Rolling Stone who has the cohones to serve. It is our Military that affords them the FREEDOM to be their snarky little selves. This is BULLSH@# from Rolling Stone.

The “end-game” is to enact martial law in the US and prevent a Federal Election on Nov. of 2012, which “they” now know they will lose, thanks in part to Mr. Beck.

“They” want to cause another complete oil embargo to the US, by empowering the Islam- Fascists,
be it Iran, Al-Qaida, the Muslim Brotherhood, etc.

      OR,….

“They” want to cause another complete economic collapse IN the US, by continually printing money, and/or getting enough people to stop paying back into the system, ie, mortgage/student loan defaults, etc.

“They” WANT to CAUSE RIOTS in the US in order to enact martial law in the US.

Can you feed your family without going to the “stores”…?

What will YOU do when “they” come for YOUR guns…?

More importantly, can you help FEED your NEIGHBORS…?

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHAT will YOU do when “they” come for your NEIGHBORS guns…?

Consider, if an American does anything, and I mean anything wrong, prison time for him/her and any one associated with it. Read the Rules Of Engagement issued when the White was taken over. I would not fight for those in the White House, especially not with those rules. The point is, these guys know they will get buried if something is found to be remotely wrong. Why would anyone pose or film an event which would do some much harm to so many? These are all volunteers, hence not forced to be there other than by Orders from the W.H.

      @Teabeliever,
I understand your concern. It’s the way he wrote the piece. But I really believe he is that kind of individual. During the Iraq war he was the only one I knew I could trust with what was really going on there. How the Surge really worked. Only thing I can say, don’t take what I say, read some of his story’s specially “For the Beast and Children” I think you will get a better understanding.

Whether the story is correct or not, it really doesn’t matter…..When the troops go to war, they are supposed to kill the enemy, and I have no problem with them snapping a few photos after a job well done, eliminating a few evil Muslims. Besides, nobody ever said that being a soldier was supposed to be a job you absolutely had to hate and aren’t allowed to take a little pride in. After all, our military is setup to turn ordinary citizens into cold blooded killers, when the enemies of America come calling….is anyone surprised that they accomplished that goal?

I’ve been following Michael Yon for a couple years on Facebook and on his blog. He has spent more time in Afghanistan and Iraq than any other journalist.

He is a former Green Beret and has no problem questioning this country’s military leadership. You should see some of his combat photography.

Teabeliever, Michael Yon is an incredible former soldier who has been free-lancing in Iraq and Afghanistan since the conflicts started. One very interesting tale was where he picked up a rifle and was promptly corrected by an Army Battalion Sergeant Major. While the SgtMaj and the Bn Commander were bleeding from wounds sustained in combat. He is a good source. Rolling Stone and most of the major media has looked for anything to discredit the efforts of our forces forward. From Evan Wright’s garbage book “Generation Kill” to the “Haditha massacre” to the firing of Gen McChrystal, they have actively enabled the enemy, in their pursuit of agenda.
All I learned from this Kill Team garbage is some soldiers went stupid, and the Platoon and Company leadership was relatively absent. But Rolling Stones portrayal of the soldiers in question is in itself rather questionable, and will serve no purpose but to feed the islamic propaganda machine. I always appreciated Oliver North, Max Boot and precious few other reporters who would visit us and accurately report on what we Marines and my brother and sister service members were actually dealing with when plans run into a thinking enemy. Machwagopo: I agree, I Think Mr Yon seems like a true patriot, and I enjoyed his reporting supporting our troops.
But when he sais he had great meories of his time with the bridgade ecxpt for the Kill Team and Than syas he deosnt remember the Kill Team, it raises the suspiciuos hairs on my head. I wonder did someone plant this article, or alter it? BecaUS E HOW CAN HE REMMEBER THEM THEN Sy he never met them. As Glenn says, ther are no coinsidences. Somethig smells wrong here and I dontw ant Glenn to get critisized for some nnsense

Teabeliever, I think he just phrased that poorly. Attempting to tie the divergent thoughts together, when really he didn’t know anything about them. He concludes the paragraph with an attempt to suggest that he doesn’t even know if he ever even saw the soldiers in question which is probably quite accurate, and I am sure there was no open secret of a group called the “Kill Team”. If there was a rumor like that traveling around the Brigade Army CID or Air Force OSI would be crawling around every tent, vehicle and port a john that the brigade was occupying. I understand your concerns regarding Glenn’s credibility, but I don’t think Media Matters is nearly clever enough to notice something like that.

TEABELIEVER, “Maybe I’m just paranoid since MediMatters said they were going to sabatage Gleen” MM never said they were sabotaging Glenn, that was written in here. Read other resources.

This is not a one-time incident but went on for months. The soldiers have not denied, but have said things such as that drugs were involved. This appears to go much higher than just the soldiers, even to the point of maybe personnel in the Pentagon trying to suppress the 4000+ photos. At this point they are allegations~no charges yet, I think. President Obama has been working to eliminate the criminal stop-loss procedure, good for him.

Mr Beck interviewed Mr.Yorn on his March 31st radio show. Mr. Yorn stated that he was not embedded with the unit in the Rolling Stone article but that it was factual and that he even reported all these facts previously. Civilians were murdered.
So Why is Mr. Beck promoting this story?
Could the reason be that a good percentage of Mr. Beck’s fans, and contributors here, do not see anything wrong with killing innocent civilians, as long as they are Afghan Muslims.
In his perverted, manipulative way, Mr. Beck is simply drumming up support for the war by telling his fans that “Things are going well.”
