Burning Car Explodes in Brave Firefighter’s Face

Firefighters risk their lives on a daily basis, as they run into flame-engulfed buildings, expose themselves to explosive situations (literally) and give their all to ensure the safety of others.
Footage from a recent Los Angeles fire perfectly captures just how brave these heroes can be. While attempting to put out a car fire, an explosion sends sparks, bright light, and flames directly into one firefighter’s face. His response? He continues working as though nothing happened.
In a description that is perfectly suited to the situation — and the man in the fire suite — Gizmodo writes, “This guy is tougher than the Wolverine.” Watch the incident unfold, below:

Posted on August 25, 2011 at 12:01pmWas at many car fires in my 31 years as a F/F. Very rare for one to blow up, tires will burst, and the gas tank could leak fuel which would run down the street or pool and the vapors would burn. My guess is that this was burning magnisium in the engine compartment and when hit with water will explode or at least burn very hot. The use of water in this situation, if no other agent is availiable, is to use large amounts of water from a safe distance, hope the F/F is ok.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 4:34pmAs a Philadelphia Police officer serving for 25 years, I saw many car fires. The ones that were set intentionally were the least dangerous to me. I could watch them burn a long time until the Fire Dept. showed up-sometimes even the tires and windows would blow out but I never saw one of them explode. Once I was transferred to Accident Investigation and the only car fires I saw were accident related, I quickly learned that a vehicle with structural damage – the extent of which is really unknown- and on fire can blow at any time and must be treated differently. The one in this video appeared to just be parked rather than in an accident and the explosion was not the gas tank- more likely the fuel line or intake. Just shows how dangerous their job really is. Sure glad he’s ok.

Glad he’s OK. .

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 3:34pmLooked a bit like a magnesium explosion. If it had emanated from the wheels, I’d be certain it was, but that looked like it came from the vicinity of the front passenger’s seat.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 4:23pmHydrogen either way–burning magnesium creates hydrogen gas by pulling oxygen from water. It was probably an airbag ignition system, judging by the location, though.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 3:24pmSketchy? How so? I‘m guessing you’re referring to how close they put themselves to the car while it was engulfed. Certainly seems keeping more distance on it while hosing would be better. Every car has a soft bomb in it these days. Some have 4 or more air bag units.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 6:45pm@ charles
there are rules and procedures for fighting car fires ………….these guys didnt follow them
advance to car from angle front corner and back corner
do not stand in front or rear of car
continually douse car from underneath
the list goes on, but hopefully they learn before someone gets hurt, not after
p.s. firefighting regulations and procedures are nation wide that way a firefighter from one state can fight fire in another state without having to be retrained

Report Post »Charles
Posted on August 24, 2011 at 3:08pmMy bad. He didn’t fall down, just ducked down a bit. These guys know the airbag units like to cook off. And once they go pop they’re finished and wont go again. Unless the steering wheel one goes, then a minute later the passenger or side curtain ones go. The big ones are the steering wheel and passenger units. I am posting on this one too much, but when stuff blows up and its routine with no injuries its fun to analyze!
