Business Owners Hit Back at Obama in ‘I Built This’ Video

Following President Barack Obama’s highly criticized “you didn’t build that” remark about business owners last week, some owners have submitted photos of their businesses for a two-minute “I built this” video take down of Obama’s comments.
Organized by Bristol Palin, daughter of 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the video features dozens of photos from a variety of businesses.
“Since the President doesn’t understand how our economy works, let’s take a moment to explain how small businesses are created,” Palin wrote on her blog. “More importantly, let’s show him the businesses we’ve made and who has made them.”
The Mitt Romney campaign also jumped on Obama’s remarks with its own “These Hands” ad.

Old Truckers
Posted on July 22, 2012 at 3:54pmMy Great Grandfather, his sons, and my father built a trucking business that lasted for 90 years.
Gradually, starting around 1960 increasing government sanctions, regulations, permits, and stupid requirement interferences ended our family business traditions.
In my case, I also built a business which lasted 42 years until I retired. I became totally disgusted with government regulations, to the point I just got tired of the hassle and with no more employees, closed my doors.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 5:19pm“If you’ve got a business, you didn’t built that!” Are perhaps the dumbest words ever uttered by a President. What President Dumbo Ears is too stupid to understand is, the roads were built mostly by private businesses and the schools were significantly and demonstratively better before there was a Department of Education promoting and allowing unions to ruin the education system in America. The government is an impediment to business and I frankly have had it. I’m thinking of shutting my business down (which my wife and I built BTW; without help from Barry), retiring and living on my savings; essentially opting out of paying taxes so I don’t support the tyrannical state we live in anymore. I’m having a John Galt moment. The only thing stopping me is my employees. None the less, we are setting in place a plan for a few years down the road to just say screw it. At which point we will no longer support the immoral actions of mentally ill liberals.

Posted on July 22, 2012 at 5:23pmMy dad returned from WWII and joined his immigrant father and older brother starting a small carpentry and general contracting business in post war New York City. My grandfather Morris “pop” as everyone called him was a carpenter in Russia before coming to America through Ellis Island around 1918. He supported his family building things. His eldest, Sam got his engineering degree from New York’s City College; my dad was an Army Combat Engineer Corps and returned from war with draftsman and constructions skills. The three set out on a lifelong journey of building a business from nothing. Literally nothing. I can still see “pop” up on a scaffold in broken English gruffly shouting instructions to Italian, Irish, black, Jewish, laborers, carpenters, plumbers, painters and other trades as the two son’s Paul and Sam figured out how to grow their little business. Their formula was simple; hard work, long hours and honesty and integrity in all business practices. They had to learn how to deal with corrupt city officials and cops and the powerful NY labor unions. I never saw my dad.Left the house at 5 for 6am meetings with his job supers, spent the day driving in NY traffic, heat and snow from job to job around the NY area while Sam ran the “inside” business. Both men returned to their suburban homes close to 7 each night falling asleep in front of the TV by 8 or 8:30.

We are even a homeschooling family, so we pay taxes for schools we don’t even use. We pay taxes for EVERYTHING. No one helped us, no one made this happen. We took out the loans. We worked two and three jobs while the businesses got off the ground. If you were a veteran and built a business, but the government gave you an education through VA benefits, then you owe money back to the government. What they fail to mention is that the government didn’t study for the tests. You can send a kid to school, but you can’t make them get good grades. I know because I have a gifted child (top 1% on the tests) who is failing due to lack of doing his work. Also, these people who built the businesses, they paid for the roads too. They didn’t get free loans becasue they built the roads, why should they give up the money from their business because they were the ones taking the risks? If it’s so easy to build a business, why aren’t all the whiners on welfare out building businesses?

He did (literally!) back breaking work to put food on the table. Four generations and 90 years later my husband is doing the same work for the same end results; to put food on the table. The business has been bought by the son from the father. My husband works for the great great grandchildren of some of his great grandfather’s first customers. We can‘t afford to advertise but because of generations of tradition and value we don’t need to. Mr. Obama, the government has no hand in this. 90 years and 4 generations built this!

FYI-Recheck the Joe the Plumber comments from during the last campaign…The writing was on the wall back then, unless you are going to accuse conservatives of taking that comment out of context too.

Is the business that made the machinery the one who should get the credit for the woodworkers business ? The obvoius answer is NO. Are they related … YES, in that one buys one sells. Does the guy that walks in the door of the woodworkers shop to have a kitchen made thank the machinery guy … NO … strip it all bare and what makes a business is people and individual effort. The LESS hindances the easier and more cost effective the business is to manage … that means LESS government … does government play it’s part YES … it’s supposed to. Do taxes go to the government from those SUCCESSFUL businesses …YES , so government is actually paid for by the people! Are we interconnected … like lego’s we are . Because you guy‘s reject God you don’t seem to understand how each part is to function in a FREE society all working together thus maintaining that very freedom which can only truly survive when it is done as God set it up. This system was born out of men that followed that spirit and created what was the greatest nation the world has ever known, and this is not foolish boasting, as I understand that it is the fundamentals that obama wants to change that made us “great”. More regulations in medicine ever since and quility is now gone. True Example (sadly not uncommon) a nurse said to a Surgeon: “if the patient does die and these notes are not completed, the hospital administration and my boss has made it clear to me I will loose my job. I am the sole supporter of my daughter; I cannot loose my job. I will finishis these notes before hanging the fluids.” The Suregon (a business owner, and responsible for the patient) hung the fluid with the medicine in it (thus she crossed professional boundaries which is against many state boards of healing arts regulations). Lawyers/Congress are running Medicine!! Me and my colleagues have quit!
Report Post »Obamacare has made it difficult for any doctor to be self employed now (and only in states that passed special laws that allowed them to remain independent of hospitals.) Soon all doctors will be reporting to a Washington pannel (not guarenteed to be composed of doctors only). Regulations are so bad, getting a complete 79 step physical is nearly non existent in the entire USA now. There is not enough time under the AMA’s CPT codes (which every doc, nurse, therapist, etc has to have). This is how ins pays. The cheapest the code book is $250/year. Yes codes change yearly. Note reporting in medical field much more important then actually doing the job bc of the overs

Posted on July 23, 2012 at 9:56amMy grandfather started in business at the beginning of the Great Depression, worked 6 days per week plus many Sunday nights, 70+ hrs. per week for over 43 years to build his business. Sure he had a business partner (who he eventually bought out), and my grandmother, an uncle, my mother and aunts who all worked in the store from time-to-time while growning up, however, my grandfather never took out a loan on his business, never asked for gov’t help but rather grew his business via the old fashioned way, “pay as you go.” Of course he was a Conservative, God fearing Republican (admitted the only Dem. he ever voted for was FDR in 1932 and was sorry he did it), but he was very generous with his money, helping many underpriviledged people for decades. I am certain he is rolling over in his grave wondering what the hell happened to his country.

I never received a government dollar, the companies I worked for sold these products worldwide, that paid my wages. Individual’s ideas, individual’s long hours, individual’s failed efforts, individual’s persistence made the internet, many were acquaintances of mine.
We did that after Eisenhower asked for a non-centralize communication scheme for the military. We did that after Eisenhower sold the idea of Post and Military roads that could carry our military border to border, coast to coast. Previous attempt to get the federal government involved in roads failed because it they failed the Constitutional requirements of the Commerce Clause.

I enlisted and fought for my country, I worked, bought gas, paid taxes, paid utility bills, bought clothes for myself and my children, bought groceries, paid union dues, paid for medical services, paid school tuition as well, so I’m thinking because of my families hard work to pay for these things, that we DID built the infrastructure to get us to and from the business that I built.
If you are a lazy, worthless, bastard who relies on the government and the good will of their communities for their existence, then the Community Organizer in Chief was speaking to you. These are the only people the Obama’s know. What more could we expect.

I would love to see a video featuring failed businesses that recount exactly how government regulations put obstacles in the way of their success. If Obama wants to claim that without government businesses can’t succeed then he needs to see the flip side- with government, businesses will fail.

I don’t think Obama is being mis-quoted but perhaps his context was misunderstood. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and think what he meant to say was that since government has helped with infrastructure, it is our duty as successful citizens to help the government out as well, i.e. pay our “fair share” of taxes.
Where the confusion lies is on the definition of “fair share”. What is our “fair share” and why does this “fair share” X% for some people and Y% for other people? If 25%, or 50%, or 75% is “fair” for one set of folks, why isnt’ that same percent the same for all? I realize some of us make more than others (due to some of use being “luckier” than others as it has nothing to do with education and hard work) but if a person is making 20K a year and paying 50% of it to taxes, isn’t that person getting food stamps, housing, etc. paid for? So why isn’t it “fair” they give as much as everyone else?

Just because a person had a good teacher and is well trained in a field, doesn’t mean he can go out and start his own business. I don’t have my own business, because quite frankly I’m not willing to stick my neck out and take on the responsibility of hiring a bunch of people and figuring out a way to pay them an appropriate salary and great benefits. I don’t want to spend endless hours of my life marketing myself and trying to balance the books while also worrying about the government charging more taxes and placing more regulations on me. I depend on my paychecks and can‘t imagine giving everyone but myself a paycheck when the company’s had a bad month and there’s not enough money to go around. I am forever grateful to those Americans who have the guts to take the risk, so many like me can work and benefit from our employer’s hard work.

Obama clearly said that somewhere along the lines, we’ve all had helps, from loving parents, to teachers. He also talked about government building roads and infrastructure, and then said, if you have a business, you didn’t build that(meaning roads, etc). Only an abject moron could think he was only saying, “if you have a business, you didn’t build that.”
What did Romney do? Started off from the part where Obama said, “If you have a business, you didn’t build that” and went on some long speech saying how wrong that was to say. He then went on to say that we’ve all had loving parents, teachers and infrastructure to help us along the way.
You are so blinded by party politics that you don’t even see that Romney is Obama.
Btw, what are Obama websites exactly? Any website that isn’t run by Beck or Fox News?
Just admit you don’t like knowing the truth. If Obama is a socialist, so is Romney. Just come to the realization that in November you’re going to have your choice between two socialists and choose the one you like.

How many times to you hear business owners say that government makes things more difficult for business? It happens all the time. Conversely, do you hear business owners say they wish government would add more regulations so it would be easier to grow their businesses? I have lost business because of the extra cost of the government regulations involved in what I do. I have never gained more business because government added a regulation. Barack needs to understand that government is not the solution. GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM.

I recently gave 2 of our employees ownership, of which one has almost 10% ownership now because of HIS hard work and dedication. I told them this morning that they didn’t earn that ownership, that Obama told me to give it to them. Boy they were pissed off!
People that work hard, get the things they want! Obama thinking means that you didn’t earn that PhD, you didn’t run that marathon, you didn’t raise 5 great kids that all work without government assistance! It’s ridiculous. I can’t even believe that liberals agree with this thinking. How do you tell someone, let alone inspire your daughters, by saying if “you built a business, you didn’t do it. Someone else made that happen.”! What a great father, inspiring your daughters that they can do whatever they want so long as they work hard because things just don’t get handed to you. Let alone that you should be looked down upon for working hard and owning a business!
