Busted: GA Girl Scout Stand Shut Down for Not Having Permit

A Girl Scout troop in Villa Rica, GA learned the hard way that government regulation is present everywhere. The troop was selling cookies at a local strip mall when a police officer approached the girls and their parents asking for a permit. When they could not provide one, the officer shut down the stand:

The girls told the local Fox affiliate they were scared their parents were going to be arrested. The story does have a happy ending, however. The local police department — which says the permit requirement is there for safety — is offering to throw the girls a pizza party.

The troop also resumed selling their cookies at the mall — after getting the proper permit.

They shut down lemon-aid stands for not having permits. Always have a coffee pot and some donuts close by or put out a collection jar that‘s excepting donations for the policemen’s ball. They’re more likely to buy cookies and donate to the ball and as they walk away and then suddenly turn back and ask “is that coffee I smell”.

Do they give medals for busting Girl Scout cookie rings. My God, I just bought some a few days ago outside a Wal Mart, I hope I don’t get rounded up when they close the books on this sting. Can’t you just see cops dressed up like girl scouts arresting customers who buy cookies from an unlawful cookie stand?

That’s just a BS excuse they gave long after the fact to make it seem like they were protecting them rather than harassing them. According to all involved with the actual incident there was never a word spoken about safety when they were told to leave, the only reason given was that they didn’t have a permit.

The only person that said anything about it being a safety concern was the police spokesman being interviewed long after the incident after having been briefed by department lawyers and PR staff.

This is what is happening because Cities and Counties are short of money. What they used to accept as normal now requires a permit since with the permit they could make some money from the sales of the cookies they did not used to get.

There is a difference between you “telling” people how good something is and actually selling the product. What if you had a cookie business in the mall. You had to pay all the fees involved with owning a business, you are paying your lease to the mall. Now all of the sudden you have competition not paying for any of these things, with prime location to sell your customers before they even see you. I would be contacting the city and the mall. This girl may get to go on a trip if she sells alot of cookies, but I am feeding my family and my employees families depending on how many cookies I sell.

@CATB So it sounds like you know they only come once a year. Do you think some people might plan for this and drop loads of money so they can have the cookies year round? Do I believe these rules are ridiculous? Yes, but if a rule is in place it should apply to EVERYONE. You may think of them as the innocent girl scouts, but behind them are people running a business and making a living from these cookies being sold.

This reply is really to Crazedbanshee. Seriously I think you have some issues with Girl Scouts of America! I’ve been a Girl Scout Leader for 7 years now and the profit margin is decent for us and the local office. The company that sells us the cookies doesn’t make as much as you think they do. I really don’t care to discuss actual dollar amounts with you, but we do alright. The girls learn the value of selling and how profits work in a safe environment. When they sell door to door with a parent it’s also another learning experience. If you have a problem with someone try picking on someone your own size!

I have the highest regard for police officers but based on some of the stories I’ve seen on here. Some officers do not deserve any high regard. I will presume that this one is a good officer and only doing his job which means that he cannot differentiate between situations and follow only laws that looks good to everyone. However, if he is one of these other kinds, I would have to say that he did that because the Girls Scouts didn’t obey and worship his union and the level heads back at the station had to straighten things out.

A permit will not stop a child from running into a road to get the dollar, a good education in safety and just good common sense. The permit provides this community to control commerce and helps to assure the State gets it’s fare share.

When God was passing out common sense the authorities in the Geogia town who shut the Girl Scout Cookie stand down must have been fishing in Alabama. The poor little Girl Scouts were probably traumatized by the big Smoky Bear Cop with the big gun on his hip and will froever have a fear of the policemen . Did the police have a permit to throw them a pizza party after the whole mess was over ? If not they should have been arrested by the FBI for police corruption and each officr fined $1,000,000 for stupidity while on duty.

Funny, the local Girl Scout leader stopped by my house a little while ago to drop off my cookies. I asked her about this and she said that they always have to get a permit — and most Scout Leaders know this and gladly abide by it. There is no money involved, but as the Scout Leader explained, it really helps them (the Scouts) out because there can sometimes be a few troups who show up at the same location on the same day, trying to vie for a spot to sell cookies. Having a permit in hand has helped her out several times in the past.

Through the permitting process they find out what the stores expect with regard to how far away from a door they need to be or whether they can go into the parking lot to sell the cookies. (Usually not.) As she said, it‘s never been a problem and is generally well known within the Girld Scout Troops that a permit is expected whenever you sell outside someone’s store.

I live in the Atlanta area, not too far from Villa Rica, so I can‘t imagine that this Troop Leader wasn’t aware of this before she decorated her vehicle and headed out to the mall. Shame on her for making herself and her girls out as the victims of the Big Bad Police!

Just sounds like a stuffy counsel person doesn’t like being approached buy a child wanting him to buy something…. If a counsel person has to stop his car because a child’s ball rolled out into the street, will children have to get a permit to play ball in their yards?! They are just trying to discourage these kids because a small minority of people don’t want to be bothered.
